The Lord’s Day Worship Service

March 19, 2017 11:00 a.m.

WE PREPARE FOR WORSHIP Prelude: Meditations:

We beseech thee, Almighty God, look upon the hearty desires of thy humble servants, and stretch forth the right hand of thy Majesty, to be our defense against all our enemies; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Adapted from the Collect for the First Sunday of Lent from The Scottish Book of Common Prayer © 1929. p. 150.

+Almighty and everlasting God, in whom we live and move and

have our being, who hast made us for Thyself, so that our hearts are restless till they rest in Thee:

Grant us purity of heart and strength of purpose, that no selfish passion may hinder us from knowing Thy will, no weakness from doing it; that in Thy light we may see light clearly, and in Thy service find perfect freedom.

Let Thy blessing rest, upon our lives, that our spirit be disciplined and earnest. Grant that our homes be holy, our work honorable, and our pleasures and enjoyments pure.

Grant us with al our heart and soul and strength and mind, evermore to love and obey Thee; and finally, in Thy great mercy, present us before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

GOD CALLS US TO WORSHIP * Call to Worship Zechariah 2:10; Isaiah 40:9 (NASB)

[Leader] Sing for joy and be glad, O daughter of Zion; for behold I am coming and I will dwell in your midst,” declares the Lord.

Get yourself up on a high mountain, O Zion, bearer of good news, lift up your voice mightily, O Jerusalem, bearer of good news; lift it up, do not fear. Say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!”

GOD HEARS OUR CONFESSION AND RESTORES US Our Corporate Confession] from Book of Common Worship

[In Unison] Eternal God, in whom we live and move and have our being, whose face is hidden from us by our sins, and whose mercy we forget in the blindness of our hearts.

Cleanse us from all our offenses, and deliver us from proud thoughts and vain desires, so that with reverent and humble hearts we may draw near to you, confessing our faults, confiding in your grace, and finding in You our refuge and strength; through Jesus Christ your Son. Amen.

The Promise of Forgiveness Micah 7:19 (NASB)

[Leader] Who is a God like unto Thee, who pardons iniquity, and passes over the transgression of the remnant of his heritage?

He retains not His anger forever, because He delights in loving-kindness.

He will again have compassion upon us; He will tread our iniquities under foot; and Thou wilt cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.

* The Response Stanza 1: Hymnal No. 119 When All Thy Mercies O My God

GOD HEARS OUR PRAYERS AND AFFIRMATIONS A Prayer in Psalm Psalm 95:1-7 (ESV)

[Leader] Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!

[Congregation] Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!

[Leader] For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.

[Congregation] Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!

[Unison] For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.

* The Affirmation of Faith Philippians 2:5-11 (NASB) Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ

Jesus, Who, though He was in the form of God, did not count equality

with God a thing to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, Taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

And being found in human form, He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Therefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the Name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Amen.

* Doxology Tune: LAST UNS ERFREUEN Let all things their Creator bless,

And worship Him in humbleness! Oh praise Him, Alleluia! Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son,

Prayers for the Church and the World

The Lord’s Prayer Matthew 6:9-13 Our Father, who art in heaven. Hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.

Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

GOD SPEAKS TO US Reading from the Epistles 1 Corinthians 12:31 – 13:13 (NASB)

12:31 But earnestly desire the greater gifts. And I show you a still more excellent way. 13:1 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part; 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a

man, I did away with childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. 13 But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

* Hymn of Preparation Stanzas 1-4; Hymnal No. 303 Be Thou My Vision

* Readings the Gospel John 8:1-11 (NASB)

1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people were coming to Him; and He sat down and began to teach them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, and having set her in the center of the court, 4 they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act. 5 Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?” 6 They were saying this, testing Him, so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground. 7 But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up, and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9 When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court. 10 Straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more.”
