Christingle means ‘Christ’s Light’. In 1747, members of a Christians in Germany gave each a lighted candle in service like ours today, which came to our country in the late 1960’s. So this service is about Jesus, the Christ, and light.

The light and peace of Jesus Christ be with you.And also with you.

Father God, as we prepare with joy to celebrate the gift of Jesus, the Christ-child, touch us with your love and be for us a living hope in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Luke 2: 1 - 14

So the Emperor, Caesar Augustusmade everyone go back to their home town so that they could be counted. And Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Bethlehem the town of David, the place his family came from.He took Mary with him and while they were there the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Away in a manger, No crib for a bed,The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky, looked down where

he lay,The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes.I love thee Lord Jesus, look down from the sky,And stay by my side until morning is nigh.

Page 6: Christingle means ‘Christ’s Light’

Be near me Lord Jesus, I ask thee to stayClose by me forever, and love me I pray.Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,And fit us for Heaven to live with thee there.

Luke 2: 1 - 14

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favour rests.”

We three Kings

We three kings of Orient are, bearing gifts we traverse afar.Field and fountain, moor and mountain, following yonder star.O Star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright,Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy Perfect Light.

Born a King on Bethlehem's plain, gold I bring to crown Him again.King forever, ceasing never, over us all to reign. O Star of wonder . . .

Frankincense to offer have I, incense owns a Deity nigh,Pray'r and praising, all men raising, worship Him, God most high.O Star of wonder . . .

Page 24: Christingle means ‘Christ’s Light’

We three Kings

Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume, breathes of life of gathering gloom.Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, sealed in the stone-cold tomb. O Star of wonder . . .

Glorious now behold Him arise, King and God and Sacrifice.Alleluia, Alleluia. Earth to heav'n replies. O Star of wonder . . .

Once in royal David’s city,Stood a lowly cattle shed,Where a mother laid her babyIn a manger for His bed.Mary was that mother mild,Jesus Christ her little child.

He came down to earth from heavenWho is God and Lord of all,And His shelter was a stable,And His cradle was a stall. With the poor, and mean and lowly,Lived on earth our Saviour holy.

And our eyes at last shall see Him,Through His own redeeming love; For that child so dear and gentleIs our Lord in Heaven above; And He leads His children onTo the place where He is gone.
