People: Those that be planted in the house of the Lord, shall flourish in the courts of our God. (Psalm 92:13)

The Hymn of Praise A.M.E. Hymnal #120Joy to the World

George F. Handel, 1685-1759

Joy to the world! The Lord is come:Let earth receive her King;

Let every heart prepare Him room, And heaven and nature sing,And heaven and nature sing,

And heaven and heaven and nature sing.

Joy to the world! The Savior reigns:Let men, their songs employ;

While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains; Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy,

Repeat, Repeat the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow,Nor thorns infest the ground;

He comes to makes His blessings flowFar as the curse is found,Far as the curse is found

Far as, far as the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace,And makes the nations prove

The glories of His righteousness, And wonders of His love,And wonders of His love

And wonders, wonders of His love.

Advent Season

The word advent itself means “arrival” or “an appearing or coming into place.” Christians often speak of Christ’s “first advent” and “second advent”; that is, His first and second comings to earth. His first advent would be the Incarnation — Christmas time. The Advent celebration is both a commemoration of Christ’s first coming and an anticipation of His second coming. As Israel longed for their Messiah to come, so Christians long for their Savior to come again.

The Lighting of the Advent Wreath Candles — Third Sunday of Advent: Joy

Leader: Today is the third Sunday of Advent - the Sunday of JOY. When we look around, wesee shadows of sadness, families in homeless shelters, people in prison, people who have become invisible and forgotten.

People: When we look around, we see shadows of grief and loss, people dreading the holidays because they've lost a loved one, because they're recently divorced, because they don't want to spend another Christmas alone.

Leader:   In the face of sadness, we light a candle of joy...In the face of grief, in the face of loss, we light a candle of joy...May the light from this candle overwhelm the world.May the light from this candle say to all that God’s joy is coming on earth as it already is in heaven. Brothers and sisters in Christ, be not afraid, God’s joy is at hand!

People: Our joy is in God and in God’s Son Jesus Christ. Like peace, joy is a gift fromGod. It overtakes us and fills us when we remember what God has done andwhat God has promised to do.

Leader:  We light this candle today to remind us that Christ came, and is coming again, so that all people might have a rich and abundant life. We thank God for the hope that Christ

gives us, for the peace, Christ bestows, and for the joy, Christ pours into our hearts.

Family Member(s): Light the first candle of HOPE; second candle of PEACE and third candle of JOY.

Leader: Let us pray.

Unison: O God of Joy, Emmanuel, send Your light into our hearts at this time. Help usto be ready for the time of Christ’s appearing. Fix our hearts and our mindsupon those things You have done and those things that You have promised to dothat we may have the joy You have promised. As we worship You, strengthen us so that we may always do Your will and so bless You and the world You have made. Amen.

The Summary of the Decalogue

LEADER: From all that dwell below the skies…SUNG: From all that dwell below the skies, Let the Creator’s praise arise; Let the Redeemer’s Name be sung, through every land, by every tongue.LEADER: Hear what Christ our Savior saith, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.SUNG: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. The Offertory (Tithes ~ Gifts ~ Benevolent Offerings)

Celebration of Giving Litany

MINISTER: It is now time for us to share in giving. Why do we give?

CONGREGATION: We give because all we have comes from God. According to

Deuteronomy 8:18, it is God who gives us the power to get wealth.

MINISTER: Why do we give?

CONGREGATION: We give because God commands us. Malachi 3:10 states that we

are to bring the full tithe into God’s storehouse.

MINISTER: Why do we give?

CONGREGATION: We give because God said in Luke 6:38, to give and He would give

back to us a more abundant blessing.

MINISTER: Why do we give?

CONGREGATION: We give because 2 Corinthians 9:7 states that God loves a cheerful

giver.

MINISTER: Our tithe symbolizes all of the ways that we have been blessed by God:

spiritually, physically, mentally, and financially and with gifts and talents.

ALL: Thank you Lord, for the privilege of giving. We are excited about

paying the tithe and giving the offering. We know that you are

faithful to your promises. Therefore, we trust you in faith to do

what you have said. AMEN!

Choral Response: “All things come of Thee, O Lord; and of Thine own have we given Thee. Amen.”

Scripture of the Day

Joy . “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” Proverbs 17:22

Quote of the Day“We cannot cure the world of sorrows, but we can choose to live in joy.” Joseph Campbell

Thought of the WeekSince Joseph belonged to David’s house and family line, he went up from the city of Nazareth in Galilee to David’s city, called Bethlehem, in Judea. He went to be enrolled together with Mary, who was promised to him in marriage and who was pregnant. —Luke 2:4-5 CEBAs Mary and Joseph traveled to his hometown, many of us go home for Christmas as well. We journey near and far to gather with family and friends, some of whom we may not see at any other time of year.For infrequent travelers, the idea of getting on an airplane or packing the car can seem overwhelming. Where is that suitcase? Is this too big to be a carry-on? Do we have everything the kids will need? How will we travel with the gifts we’ll give and later return with the ones we’ll receive?Many will over pack, only to realize later we didn’t need to take everything with us.In our everyday lives, we can also carry a lot of negative, emotional “baggage.” Anger about that event long ago still travels with us. Hurt from a difficult relationship seems always nearby. Internal struggles about money, time, and other resources are held onto. We need to pack lighter.When we carry too much, we hinder our ability to receive. Our hands must be empty to embrace the joy of Christ, to receive the love from our neighbors, friends and family.Do you tend to over pack? What might you leave behind? What good things have you missed because you were clutching onto something else? What negativity do you need to release?How will you make room for joy this Christmas?Prayer: O God, grant me the strength and courage to carry less “baggage” this Christmas.http://www.umc.org/what-we-believe/make-room-for-joy-advent-devotion

Humor of the WeekJumping for Joy

The Jefferson family was on their first trip to Israel and they wanted to do something adventurous, so they decided to go skydiving. During the class, Hellel the skydiving instructor was taking questions.

George Jefferson asked, "If our chute doesn't open, and the reserve doesn't open, how long do we have until we hit the ground?"

Hellel looked at George and responded straight faced, "The rest of your life."

20/20 (7.0) Initiative

The 20/20 initiative is a Church-wide fundraising project managed by the Stewards.  This project is established to assist with our Annual Connectional Budget. Financial gifts donated through the 20/20 initiative are added to our collected conference claims and assist greatly in meeting the first and second half of our Connectional Budgetary obligations. The Steward Board is requesting 150 participants for conference year 2018-2019. The first half of our budget is due in February 2019. In addition to the 18 officers and team captains we are asking STARTING TODAY 127 people to give 20 dollars per week for 20 weeks in addition to your regular tithes, gifts and offerings. Please mark your envelopes 20/20 and allocate $20.00.  Our goal is to raise $60,000.  Again, this will satisfy all budgetary needs on the conference level without utilizing any operational funds.  Please see or contact any Steward to participate; we are looking forward to your commitment
