If this is the first time the children have used a worksheet set out in this format they will need explanation and various degrees of assistance depending on their level of development. Explain to the children they need to complete each section completely and tick the appropriate box before moving onto the next number. Helpful Hint: Depending on the maturity and reliability of the child it may be necessary to check each number is completed properly before he/she moves on to the next number. Materials required for this activity: sheet of decorations to colour 1 for each child activity worksheets 1 set for each child textas colouring in pencils scissors glue sheets of thin cardboard preferably green or red (the decorations are glued onto this card - it needs to be thin enough for the children to cut easily, but thick enough to make a firm decoration which doesn’t curl at the edges when glued.) ribbon, wool or string to use for hanging the decorations paper punches (as many as you can muster) During Session One each child works through Worksheet, page 1. For Session Two choose Worksheet, page 2a or 2b, depending on the maturity of the child/ren. Christmas Decorations to Hang

Reading/Art/Craft Activity

This activity integrates reading for a purpose, comprehension, art/craft, following instructions,

special seasons of the year, development of fine motor skills and mathematics. It also nurtures the

child’s independence and pride in his/her work.

Each child follows the instructions on a worksheet to produce four Christmas decorations to hang

on a Christmas Tree or door knob or …

Notes for Tutor:

You are going to make some Christmas Decorations.

Session One:

1. You will need the following materials: 1 sheet of Christmas Decorations thin card to use as a backing for your decorations texas for colouring in colouring in pencils glue scissors ribbon, wool or string for hanging the decorations paper punch (to share)

Tick the box when you have collected the materials you need.

Now move on to Number 2.

2. Use the textas and/or the colouring in pencils to colour in the Christmas Decorations. You may like to decorate the

Christmas Tree.

Now move on to Number 3.

3. Pick up a sharp lead pencil and write your initials on the front of each decoration. Use very small, neat printing. You are doing this so you will know which decorations are yours when they are finished.

Tick the box when you have initialled the four decorations. Now move on to Number 4.

4. Carefully cut the tree, candle, star and bell out by cutting on the dotted line which is around each one. Glue them onto the thin card.

Tick the box when you have glued the decorations onto the card. Well done. Put the decorations in a safe place to dry, ready for Session Two.

Tick the box when you have coloured in all the decorations.

Take your time and colour in neatly. I’ll check them out when I visit on Christmas Eve.

2a Session Two: 5. Take the dry decorations and cut each one out. Cut on the outside of the thick black line around each shape.

Tick the box when you have cut out all the decorations.

Now move on to Number 6.

6. Take a paper punch and punch a hole in the top of each decoration.

Tick the box when you have punched a hole in each decoration. Now move on to Number 7.

7. Measure four pieces of ribbon, wool or string. Each piece should be 35cms long.

Thread one through the hole in the Christmas Tree. Knot the ends together.

Thread one through the hole in the Christmas Star. Knot the ends together.

Thread one through the hole in the Christmas Candle. Knot the ends together.

Thread one through the hole in the Christmas Bell. Knot the ends together.

Tick the box when you have completed task number 7.

Fantastic work. You have successfully finished the decorations.

Here’s the challenge! Take your time. Cut out very carefully so that each shape has the thick black line left around it. This makes it look very smart.

Here’s a hint. Make sure the decoration is placed in the paper punch so the hole is not too near the edge. If the hole is too close to the edge it will tear when you put the

ribbon through it.

2 b Session Two:

Tick the box when you have punched the holes in each decoration. Now move on to Number 7.

Thread one through the hole in the top of the Christmas Tree. Knot the ends together.

Thread one through the hole in the bottom of the Christmas Tree and through the hole in the top of the Christmas Candle. Knot the ends together.

Thread one through the hole in the bottom of the Christmas Star and through the hole in the top of the Bell. Knot the ends together.

Tick the box when you have completed task number 7.
