Christs School Open Evening : A Student Tour Guides Perspec tive
On the evening of Mo nda y 20th Sep tem ber Christ s Sc hoo l opene d its doo rs
to prospec tive stud ents, ma inly young sters in their last yea r of p rima ry sc hool.
Christ's had plenty to offer inc lud ing a school tour, a hea d tea c hers ta lk and
an opportunity to mee t tea c hers. Visitors c ould a lso wa tc h demonstra tions in
the sc ienc e d ep artment, taste foo d from France a nd Spain in langua ge s and
ea t homem ad e c ookies in food tech.
As I ma de my way ba c k to the sc hool to help a s a to ur guide , I thought
ab out the open e venings that I had attended before d ec iding o n my c hoic e
of sec ond ary sc hoo l. Wha t rea lly stuck in my mind were the d rama
dep artments, espe c ially, the p erformances I saw . I hop ed tha t I co uld find
som ething m em orab le for the stud ents I show ed round . In the end it turned
out to b e the last thing I expec ted .
The group I set off w ith c hose to spend the longest time in Sc ienc e
Depa rtme nt! Then the y had to g o to the hea d tea c her's talk, so I wa s left on
my own w ith a p ig s d issec ted kidney. In the end I stayed there for the rest of
the evening, expla ining to our future stud ents wha t a kidney doe s. Thisproved to b e q uite interesting as the rea c tions to it va ried from c uriosity to
disgust.
Od d ly the p ig 's kidney made m y night fee l a suc c ess as I am sure, whethe r
fasc ina ting or revo lting , it w ill be som ething to stick in the mem ory!
I sha ll be ho p ing to see a lot o f those stud ents a t Christ s next yea r!

The Perfec t Job !
During your time in sec ond ary sc hool it's go od to c onsider wha t you w ant to
be w hen you re older. But how c an you rea lly tell wha t you wa nt? How do
you find your perfec t job ?
The m ost efficient way is to a ttend c areers events (fa irs/ shows). Hund red s of
organisa tions suc h a s Skills London hold Sa turda y openings. They c an tell you
ab out d ifferent c areer op po rtunities and give you a c hanc e to talk to
em ployers, co lleg es and expe rts about your future. They p rovide interac tive
fea tures from eve ry caree r imaginable. Choosing jobs isn t straightfo rward
but the d ec ision w ill be m ade easier with the support of friend s, family and
teachers.
Consider a short-term work experienc e or internship to expe riment w ith
d ifferent p rofessions. You w on't need to m ake a long-term c ommitme nt andyou w ill have the op portunity to g et an understand ing of jobs tha t sound
interesting. If you find you ne ed new skills to ac c om plish your goa ls, consider
going ba c k to sc hoolor college to ge t the a pp rop ria te tra ining.
Ano ther rou te is to try som e o nline quizzes. Sites like Fab job and Myc areerquiz
c laim to he lp you find out wha t jobs suit you b y asking you what you enjoy
doing in your spare time, your favourite sub jec t or wo rds tha t a re m ost used
to d esc ribe you. The site I would rec ommend would b e Youthink quiz
bec ause it asks a lot of q uestions and there, in the e nd , my p red ic ted job was
exac tly wha t I wa nt to be. A lawyer. So, ge t online a nd d isc over your drea m
job.

Secondary Schools Rugby League is back... Bigger, better, more exciting and foreveryone!
Dear PE Teacher,
Please find enclosed a flyer for the 2010/11 Carnegie Champion Schools Tournament.
The competition continues to be one of Rugby Leagues great success stories having enjoyed
another year of growth, indeed it remains the largest Rugby League knock-out tournament in theworld.
Impressively as a region, we have now engaged over 1000 teams in the past 7 years with 2010 setto be our most significant year to date. This success can be directly attributed to the support of theteachers and professional staff who drive the competition to become bigger, better and morerewarding for our children year in year out.
The competition is open to all secondary schools at every age group; Boys Year 7 to 11, GirlsYear 7 to 11.
All national finalists will parade round the pitch at the new Wembley Stadium before the CarnegieChallenge Cup Final, with the Boys Year Seven Final being played as the curtain raiser on the
hallowed Wembley turf!
Your school may already have received entry information from your local convenor, if so pleaseliaise with this person on the local arrangements specific to your school. However, if your schoolhas not received any information, please accept this letter as a means of inviting your school toparticipate in Rugby League during 2010/11.
If you are interested in playing Rugby League, please contact myself for further information on theopportunities that exist for your school and I look forward to working with you in the coming months,
Yours in Rugby League,
