Choral and Orchestral Concert hosted by Christ’s School, Richmond, at

the church of St. Matthias, Richmond Hill

4th July at 7.30

On J uly 4that 7.30, at the c hurch of St. Matthias on Richmond Hill, the school is putting on amajor concert featuring the work of the Welshman Sir Karl J enkins (knighted last week!),

American J ohn Williams, and the British choral arranger Bob Chilcott who has arranged a songby Billy Joel, as well as a number of “concerto” performances featuring the most gifted of

Christ’s musicians. The full programme for the evening is:

Purcell. Sonata fo r trum p e t a nd strings (so lo ist Pa trick Wilso n)

Grieg. Peer Gynt suite no. 1 fo r o rc he stra

Billy J oel (arr. Bob C hilcott). And So it Goes for cho ir

J ohn Williams. Theme/Remembrances from Schindler’s List for vio lin a nd o rc he stra

(so loist O tto Ste rne r)

Arban. Fantaisie and Variations on Carnival of Venice for trum p e t a nd o rc he stra (soloist

Pa tric k Wilso n)

Sir Karl J enkins. Songs of Sanctuary (Adiemus) fo r c ho ir, strings, flute a nd p e rc ussio n

(so lo ist Da vina Silw a no )

Sir Karl Jenkins’ iconic Ad i emus  shot the composer to a prominence, following its appearance

in a Delta Airlines TV advert, that J enkins had not even had with his work with Soft M a c hine

(voted best small group in the Melody Maker jazz poll of 1974) or the jazz-rock group Nuc leus

(which won first prize at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1970). Ad i emus  inhabits a unique musicalworld which features a fantastic mixture of elements from Jenkins’ jazz-rock background and

African-style singing blended with more traditional choral sounds. Christ’s forthcoming

performance has already generated sufficient interest from outside the school to gain thechoir an invitation to perform Adiemus in the C arnegie Hall, New York, in January 2016!

John Williams’ music for the film Schindler’s List has become a firm favourite with millions of

listeners, and its instrumentation for large orchestra with solo violin is an ideal vehicle for

showing off the talents of Otto Sterner, one of Christ’s talented musicians.

Grieg’s well-known Pee r G ynt  remains one of the best-loved pieces in the orchestral

repertoire, and features Morning  and In the Hal l o f the M ou nta in King , which will be veryfamiliar to almost all listeners. Arban’s Va ria t ions on C a rniva l of Venice  is a thrilling showpiecefor the trumpet, with Wynton Marsalis’ performance, for example, having had nearly half a

million YouTube hits. This concert will feature the playing of Christ’s own Patrick Wilson.

Christ’s School is delighted to be hosting this concert in the wonderful St. Matthias Church. Its

distinctive high spire and location at the top of Richmond Hill make it a familiar landmark formiles around. The church was designed by the great Victorian architect Gilbert Scott whoalso designed the Albert Memorial, King’s College London chapel and the Midland Grand

Hotel at St. Pancras Station. The church is in a neo-gothic style, and its ambience and

acoustic make it an ideal setting for the concert.

We would be delighted to see you at St. Matthias on 4th J uly –  please book tickets early,

although tickets will be sold (subject to availability) on the evening itself.

This concert is not only open to the school community but also to the general public. Ticketsare £10 (£5 concessions) available from the school reception (0208 940 6982) or by emailingPhilip Wilson, Director of Music, Christ’s School, on [email protected] .  Church
