Original voices. Fresh perspectives.

Welcome to the first ever Chrysalis festival – a new platform for ambitious performance by emerging young theatre-makers.

Proudly brought to you by Youth Theatre Arts Scotland in partnership with the Traverse Theatre, Chrysalis aims to inspire audiences and positively enhance the perception of creative work by young people.

The idea for such a festival first surfaced five years ago when we started seeing more and more exceptional theatre made by young people in collaboration with talented artists and directors appearing across the country. Convinced that work of this quality deserved to be showcased to a wider audience, Youth Theatre Arts Scotland began to develop plans for the launch of a new platform.

Chrysalis is the culmination of vision, dialogue, partnership and, above all, a passionate commitment to raising the profile of youth theatre as an art form. Curated with support from a panel of industry experts we believe that the festival performance programme highlights those qualities that, when asked, young people told us would celebrate and inspire their creativity for years to come:

“… ambitious and pushing for new ideas.”

“… emotionally engaging.”

“… polished, confidently performed and produced.”

“… dealing with questions that are big, difficult to answer and difficult to ask.”

We want this first Chrysalis festival to create a buzz. By challenging expectations of theatre made by young people we want it to awaken curiosity, arouse a sense of discovery and raise aspirations for the future. Through all of this we hope to stimulate critical discussion around youth theatre performance and encourage a new debate about its value and impact.

We invite you to join us in witnessing original voices, fresh perspectives and new beginnings.

Kenny McGlashan, CEO,Youth Theatre Arts Scotland, 2015

I’D RATHER HUMBLE THAN HERO JUNCTION 25

Recognise me. I break records, push boundaries, test limits. I am special. I save kittens from trees and people from burning buildings. You want to pin me up, download me and switch me on. You can't help it. I have great teeth. I let you look at me – my hair, my eyes. You wonder when your chance will come.

I’d rather humble than hero was created by the ensemble of Junction 25 and directed by Gary Gardiner and Tashi Gore. It was originally presented at Tramway in March 2014. Junction 25 are the winners of the 2015 CATS Whiskers award.
