Sunday in Ordinary Time

For the 2 PM February 9th

annual Anointing of the Sick

In this ‘Year of Faith’ I’m

explaining the revised

Roman Missal orations

that were not on a Sunday last year. May our

reflections on these

theologically rich, deeply beautiful Mass orations

help us grow in God’s gift of FAITH! In anticipation of next Saturday’s Anointing of the Sick Mass I will

reflect on the revised orations for that Sacrament.

Anointing of the Sick within Mass - Collect

O God, who willed that our infirmities be borne by your Only Begotten Son to show the value of

human suffering, listen in kindness to our prayers for our brothers and sisters who are sick; grant that all who are oppressed by pain,

distress or other afflictions may know that they are chosen among those proclaimed blessed

and are united to Christ in his suffering for the salvation of the world.

- or -

Almighty ever-living God, eternal health of believers, hear our prayers for your servants who

are sick: grant them, we implore you, your merciful help, so that, with their health restored, they may

give you thanks in the midst of your Church

OI. This is not the ‘secret code’ needed to be healed; they are the letters found on most oil stocks or containers for the olive oil used to anoint the sick: ‘OI’ stands for ‘Oil of the Infirm.’ The other two oils blessed by a Bishop and used by the Church are known as ‘OC’ or ‘OS’ which is for ‘Oil of the Catechumen’ or ‘Oil of the Sacrament’ and ‘SC’ which is for ‘Sacred Chrism.’

The options for the Collect at Masses during which the sick are anointed provide a firm biblical foundation for the Sacrament of the Sick. Some find being told to ‘offer it up’ mere ‘pious baloney’ or a cop-out, but the first option offers two profound reasons NOT to think this way. 1] Jesus freely chose to endure the harsh reality of human suffering; He did not suffer for the sake of suffering, but to show that it can have value. And 2] we are invited by the Lord to join our struggles and woes to His so as to share in the rich harvest made possible by His salvific suffering. As I often note: no wonder the Church requires an image of Christ crucified wherever the holy Mass is offered, for during the Offertory we are invited to offer ourselves and all our pains and sorrows to the Lord so He can transform them by His grace.

Anointing of the Sick - Prayer over the Offerings

Since the moments of our life unfold, O God, according to your good pleasure,

receive the prayers and sacrificial offerings by which we implore your mercy for

our brothers and sisters who are ill, that, having been anxious for them in their danger,

we may rejoice at their recovery of health.

We Rely on God’s Good Pleasure. Some bristle at the notion that we live - and die - according to God’s good pleasure. Perhaps they have been so burnt by those who have used them or abused them for their own ‘good pleasure’ that they cannot trust God! Yet our God of love desires only one thing: that we be happy with Him forever in the Kingdom of Heaven! Since that is what ‘pleases God’ more than anything else, we must trust and believe that whatever happens to us and to our loved ones is for their and our own ultimate eternal good!

What child has not been hurt by, or furious with a parent who does not give them what they ask for? Even Jesus asked His Father to “let this cup [of suffering] pass Him by” [cf. Luke 22:42] - but only if it was His Father’s will. We adopt this same attitude in our prayers for those whom we anoint in the Sacrament of the Sick: we ask God to heal and restore them to their former way of life; but we also ask God to give us the grace and strength needed to accept whatever His will is for us and our loved ones.

Anointing of the Sick - Prayer after Communion

O God, only support of our human weakness, show the power of your protection over your servants who are sick, that, sustained by your

merciful help, they may be restored to your holy Church in good health.

Only In God. Catholics believe that God reaches out to touch, heal, grace and restore us through the Sacrament. While some sadly use sickness and suffering as an excuse to reject God and His Church, many hear God calling them closer to Himself and His Church through the mystery of pain and suffering. To register yourself or others to be anointed at the 02/09 Anointing of the Sick Mass, contact the parish office.

With God’s love and my prayers,

Reverend Michael J. Kreder

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD AND FIRST

EUCHARIST SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION

We are very excited we’re in the parish center and no longer

need to cross over to the High School for CLOW and

Sacramental Preparation. Staring this week, our 2 gradersnd

will leave church with Betty Hatler through the doors in the

front of the church to the right. They lead to the room in the

Parish Center. The children attending Children’s Liturgy of the

Word will leave in the back of the church by the Blessed

Sacrament Tabernacle. That set of doors lead to the parish

center as well. The 2 rooms which will now be used for the

lessons are right next to each other so if you see your child walk

through the wrong door, the catechists will see that your child

is brought to the corrrect room.

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19

God tells Jeremiah that he was chosen to be a prophet to the

nations before he had even been born. He also promises him

strength and protection, providing Jeremiah does as God asks.

Second Reading: I Corinthians 12:31—13:13

Paul discusses the importance of love and claims that one who

possesses any gift, but lacks love, has nothing. He explains that

true love never fails, although knowledge or other talents can fail

to endure in the same manner. Paul says that three things last:

"faith, hope, and love, the greatest of these being love."

Gospel: Luke 4:21-30

Jesus spoke in the synagogue at Nazareth, at first appealing to

all who were present. But he knew that they would be expecting

him to do the things he had already done in other towns. He

reminded them of other prophets who had preached and gained

acceptance in foreign places instead of their home towns. This

angered the people, who expelled him from town.

honor all Scouts, BOYS and GIRLS. Children can process in with

their leaders and other church ministers. W e'll reserve the pews

Thank you to those parishioners who are participating in the

Community Alliance Banking Program at Boiling Springs

Savings Bank. We have 67 people/families who are designated

Saint Mary as a recipient. For the quarter ending December 31,

2012, our total Community Alliance Reward was $4,593.34. Isn’t

that wonderful? If you would like to register, call one of the

branches and tell them you would like to register naming Saint

Mary Church the designated organization.

ANNIVERSARY LITURGIES

Once again, the Archdiocese will be celebrating five, twenty-

five and fifty years of Christian marriage in the year 2013. These

anniversary liturgies w ill be celebrated by Archbishop John J.

Myers in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark

as follows:

APRIL 28, 2013 3:00 P.M. 50 YEARS

MAY 5, 2013 3:00 P.M. 25 YEARS & 5 YEARS

To register, please contact the parish office (201) 438-2200. It

is our desire that every couple in the Archdiocese deserving of

such recognition be present at the appropriate liturgy. The

presence of a large number of couples will give favorable

witness to the strength and stability of Christian marriage in

today's society.

FLU - USE COMMON SENSE

The Office of Divine Worship has posted Guidelines for the

Liturgy. There is no need to severely limit liturgical practice

due to the fear of contagions.

• Whether you are a priest, minister of the Mass or member

of the assembly, wash hands before and after Mass. Make

liberal use of hand sanitizers.

• If you are not feeling well, refrain from receiving the Blood

of Christ and avoid physical contact with others.

• Parents should determine the level of participation in the

liturgy of their children, especially if they are sick.

• Germs spread more easily in warm, moist environments.

Even in winter Church buildings should be kept cool and

dry. Public buildings and bathrooms should be cleaned

regularly.

• Ultimately, each individual needs to determine their level

of liturgical involvement in sensitive situations.

OPERATION RICE BOWL

Operation Rice Bowl provides the faithful of our Archdiocese

with the opportunity to learn about and directly assist the poor

both here in our Archdiocese and overseas. It supports Catholic

Relief Service development projects designed to help families

and communities grow more food, increase their incomes and

improve their standard of living. Please pick up a rice bowl

found in the NARTHEX before leaving church today.
