FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

BLESSED - 3X 0VER! The story is told of Cardinal Richard Cushing of Boston who was definitely a col-orful character. One time, when he was a young priest, Cushing was called out to give the Last Rites to a man who had collapsed in a department store. Leaning over the man, he asked the ritual question: “Do you believe in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit?” The man looked up and said, “Here I am dying and you’re asking me riddles!” Well, per-

haps for some people, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are a little bit of a riddle. This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Trinity. The Trinity is what we could call a supernatu-ral mystery. It is not something that we can totally explain. Now, there are many natural mysteries in our world that scientists try very hard to shed light upon and sometimes they are successful. But the mystery of the Godhead in three persons, that’s not easy to truly gasp. If we go to the New Testament, we will not find the word “Trinity” there. No, the word is not there but the concept is. Many saints and theologians through the years have sought to explain the mystery of the three persons in one God. Perhaps the most famous legend is that of Saint Patrick who converted the Irish na-tion. Patrick taught the Irish about the Trinity it is said, by using the three leaf shamrock. That is why most statues of Saint Patrick have him holding a shamrock in his hand. The three leaves on the plant stated Patrick, represented the three persons in God. Saint Thomas Aquinas used three interlocking rings to explain the Trin-ity, and there have been other attempts to illustrate the mystery as well. Saint Augustine, the great Doctor of the Church wrote a wonderful book entitled On the Trinity. Now, it is definitely not a book that you would take to the beach with you! Very heavy reading! But the saints thought a great deal about God, much more than we do I’m sure. Saint Augustine, when writing that book as the story goes, was out walking along the shore of the ocean one day when he spied a little boy. The boy was digging a hole in the sand. Nothing unusual about that. But the boy kept filling his pail with water and dumping it into the little hole. Back and forth he went, pour-ing the water. Finally, Augustine stopped him. He said, “Little one, what are you doing?” The boy replied, “Mister, I am going to put the entire ocean into this little hole!” to which Saint Augustine replied, “Impossible, it can’t be done! No way can you put the great big ocean into that little hole!” Later on though, the saint thought to himself, “that’s exactly what I am doing when I write about God. My mind is like that little hole and God is really a very big ocean!” The point is that the human mind cannot comprehend everything about God mainly because it is lim-ited and we are creatures. However by faith, we do obtain light about God and His greatness. There are times too, that we think about the Trinity. For one, anytime we say our prayers, we begin with the Sign of the Cross, “In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.” We begin Mass in the same way as well. What about the Sacrament of Baptism? In baptism, the priest poured water over our head three times and invoked the Trinity. So by baptism, really each of the three persons is in us by grace. That is something we hardly ever think about-we are temples of the Trinity! The only thing that could spoil that is serious sin. As we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Trinity let’s rejoice in this “Three Fold” blessing of God! Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome 10
