Readings and Hymns

A reading from a letter of John Adams to his wife, Abigail Adams. Read by Randy Konrad.

John Adams was an American politician and political philosopher and the second President of the United States, after being the first Vice President of the United States for two terms. He was one of the most influential Founding Fathers of the United States. He came to prominence in the early stages of the American Revolution. As a delegate from Massachusetts to the Continental Congress, he played a leading role in persuading Congress to declare independence, and assisted Thomas Jefferson in drafting the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776. As a representative of Congress in Europe, he was a major negotiator of the eventual peace treaty with Great Britain, and chiefly responsible for obtaining important loans from European countries that helped to finance the Revolutionary War and the creation of the United States of America.

(This day) will be the most memorable event in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports…Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.

You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. — I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. — Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. Abigail Adams was the wife of John Adams, the second President of the United States, and the mother of John Quincy Adams, the sixth. She was the first Second Lady of the United States, and the second First Lady of the United States. Abigail Adams is remembered for the many letters she wrote to her husband while he stayed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during the Continental Congresses. John Adams frequently sought the advice of his wife on many matters, and their letters are filled with intellectual discussions on government and politics. The letters are invaluable eyewitness accounts of the Revolutionary War home front as well as excellent sources of political commentary.

We have too many high-sounding words, and too few actions that correspond with them…I wish most sincerely there was not a slave in this province. It always appeared a most iniquitous scheme to me—to fight ourselves for what we are daily robbing and

plundering from those who have as good a right to freedom as we have.

But you must remember that arbitrary power is like most other things which are very hard, very liable to be broken — and notwithstanding all your wise laws and maxims we have it in our power not only to free ourselves but to subdue our masters, and without violence throw both your natural and legal authority at our feet. In the new Code of Laws,…I desire you would Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favourable to them than your ancestors.

A reading from Chief Seattle Read by Julie Glass.

Chief Seattle was the leader of the Suquamish and Duwamish Native American tribes in what is now the state of Washington. A prominent figure among his people, he pursued a path of accommodation to white settlers, which he came to regret after suffering the consequences of many broken treaties. In response, he gave a widely publicized speech arguing in favor of ecological responsibility and respect of native Americans' land rights.

All things share the same breath - the beast, the tree, the man... the air shares its spirit with all the life it supports. Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.

A reading from the Second Inaugural Address of Abraham Lincoln Read by Al Krapf.

Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th President of the United States from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. He successfully led his country through its greatest internal crisis, the American Civil War, preserving the Union and ending slavery. Before his election in 1860 as the first Republican president, Lincoln had been a country lawyer, an Illinois state legislator, a member of the United States House of Representatives, and twice an unsuccessful candidate for election to the U.S. Senate. As an outspoken opponent of the expansion of slavery in the United States, Lincoln was elected president. His tenure in office was occupied primarily with the defeat of the secessionist Confederate States of America in the Civil War. He introduced measures that resulted in the abolition of slavery, issuing his Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and promoting the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution. Six days after the large-scale surrender of Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee, Lincoln was assassinated.

The Almighty has His own purposes. "Woe unto the world because of offenses; for it must needs be that offenses come, but woe to that man by whom the offense cometh." If we shall suppose that American slavery is one of those offenses which, in the providence of God, must needs come, but which, having continued through His appointed time, He now wills to remove, and that He gives to both North and South this terrible war as the woe due to those by whom the offense came, shall we discern therein any departure from those divine attributes which the believers in a living God always ascribe to Him? Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray, that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondsman's two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said "the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether."

With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.

Emma Lazarus was an American poet born in New York City. She is best known for "The New Colossus", a sonnet written in 1883; its lines appear on a bronze plaque installed on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty.

Excerpts from “Strength to Love” (1963), a book of sermons by the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Read by Brian Bingaman, Sr.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was an American clergyman, activist and prominent leader in the African American civil rights movement. His main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights in the United States, and he has become a human rights icon. A Baptist minister, King became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, serving as its first president. King's efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech. There, he raised public consciousness of the civil rights movement and established himself as one of the greatest orators in U.S. history.

Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness…Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction....The chain reaction of evil--hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars--must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation.

The church must be reminded that it is not the master or the servant of the state, but rather the conscience of the state. It must be the guide and the critic of the state, and never its tool. If the church does not recapture its prophetic zeal, it will become an irrelevant social club without moral or spiritual authority.

A Reading from a sermon offered by The Rev. Dr. Grant Carey, Canon Residentiary, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Sacramento, CA on July 4, 2006 Read by Caitlin Andonian.

The Rev. Dr. Grant Carey was a priest in the Diocese of Northern California for more than fifty years and served in various educational, outreach, pastoral and liturgical capacities during his tenure, including adopting the persona of “St. Nicholas” every year at Christmas. He was a friend of the Andonian family and one of the people that Rev. Kathy considers to be a mentor in her ministry.

Those "founding fathers" who signed the Declaration of Independence were so filled with a sense of God's providence that they dared to state certain ideals and make assumptions about both God and humankind, about this being “one nation under God.” This, I believe, is what makes our nation unique among the nations of the world—and why we must never become complacent lest the freedoms we possess become eroded— which means that fully to live in a nation such as ours carries with it both privilege and responsibility— and we can't have one without the other.

(W)hat really matters is just how seriously we accept these ideas for our own: the dedication, integrity and willingness of each one of us to recognize that we stand together under both God's judgment and God's love. The people are the strength of the nation…you and I, who are alive to our purpose, our dignity, and our responsibility. And so on this special day we have come together in the hallowed place to pray God to continue to direct us and bless us that we may indeed prove a blessing the world, reflecting justice and peace to all people.

The Prayers of the People for Independence Day are adapted from prayers offered before a session of the Congress of the United States on the occasion of Independence Day in 1992. The prayers were written and spoken by the Reverend Norman A. Hjelm, director of faith and order, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States. Pastor Hjelm is a retired Lutheran pastor active in many ecumenical activities in the Philadelphia region and around the world.

Lord God of hosts, God of the nations: By Your grace and patience You have allowed this our land once again to celebrate its birth, its quest for liberty, justice, and equity. And we are grateful to you, O Lord.

Once again by Your grace and patience You have called your people—responsible men and women who are equally faithful and unfaithful, righteous and unrighteous before You and each other—You have called your people to the exercise of their solemn task of the continuing formation of our churches, community and nation. And we are respectful of the importance of this call, O Lord.

Remind these Your servants that liberty, justice, and equity remain ahead of this nation as tasks yet to be fulfilled and not as goals already reached. And we are hopeful because of your Holy Spirit, O Lord.

Maintain before us a clear dedication to the needs of those in our midst who are on the outside because of age, ill health, race, sex, poverty, and urban or rural degradation. And we are compassionate because of your example in Jesus Christ, O Lord.

Consecrate anew this nation to the exercise of imaginative and sacrificial leadership in a restless and violent world which still struggles for authentic justice, peace, and a safe home in Your creation. And we are dedicated to Your call, O Lord.

Holy and gracious God: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and maker of all. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, Almighty God, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through Jesus Christ our Savior. By Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and for ever. AMEN.

The Celebrant then continues

As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread A period of silence is kept.

God of promise, you have prepared a banquet for us. Happy are those who are called to the Supper of the Lamb.

Lord of the Feast, we thank you for gathering us as your people. We call to remembrance the many times we have been fed at your table and we lament our distance now. Be present Lord Jesus as you were present with your disciples, be known to us in the breaking of the bread, and may your Holy Spirit sustain us and all your Church until we can gather together again. We ask this for the sake of your love. Amen.

Blessing

The priest blesses the people, saying

God of liberty, God of justice, hear our call, and light the sky, your torch shining in the night, that we may find our way back to you, and bring people together in unity. And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always. Amen.

Dismissal
