Doubt - a Doorway to Faith

Each year on the Second Sunday of Easter we hear the gospel story about Thomas, one of the Twelve. He is best known as the "doubting Thomas" because he doubts that the risen Christ has appeared to the others in his absence. But for Thomas, doubt becomes a doorway to deeper faith. He is invited to touch the wounds of the body of the Risen Jesus. And he proclaims the now famous words, "My Lord and my God."

There is a tremendously hopeful lesson from this Easter story for us who live in the 21st century of Christianity. We can easily become fearful or ashamed of our own experiences of doubt. It feels uncomfortable.

The Good News is that doubt can lead to greater faith when we acknowledge its reality and when we acknowledge the reality of the Risen Christ who is always with us. Like Thomas, we might find ourselves being led to a long-lasting deeper level of faith that includes a more intimate sense of Christ's presence.

Cada año, en el segundo domingo de Pascua, escuchamos la historia del evangelio acerca de Tomás, uno de los Doce. Él es mejor conocido como el” incrédulo Tomás" porque duda de que el Cristo resucitado se haya aparecido a los demás en su ausencia. Pero para Thomas, la duda se convierte en una puerta a una fe más profunda. Él es invitado a tocar las heridas del cuerpo de Jesús resucitado. Y proclama las ahora las famosas palabras: "Mi Dios y mi Señor”.

Hay una lección tremendamente esperanzadora de esta historia de Pascua para nosotros que vivimos en el siglo XXI del cristianismo. Fácilmente podemos volvernos temerosos o avergonzarnos de nuestras propias experiencias de duda. No es nada cómodo.

La Buena Nueva es que la duda nos lleva a una mayor fe cuando entendemos que es una realidad y cuando reconocemos la realidad de Cristo resucitado que siempre está con nosotros. Al igual que Thomas, podríamos encontrarnos yendo a un nivel de fe más profundo y duradero que incluye un sentido más íntimo de la presencia de Cristo.

We are more than a building! It is obvious if you say it aloud while reading, but it became so apparent over these recent, trying weeks. I was one of the staff members making household check-in calls and had the opportunity to talk to many parishioners. When I asked how a household was doing, the immediate response was “we are fine; how are all of you, how is Father, is everyone in the office healthy?” When I asked about prayers, the request was always for the suffering, for the world as a whole and for the families wracked with grief in a horrible time of loss. Our community is so caring of others, here at home and all around the world. It is truly an uplifting experience. On April 4, we held the General Confessions & Absolution event in our parking lot after coordinating with the

City Government and with the Archdiocese. It was so heartwarming to see our Risen Savior community show up in their cars and gather in the church parking lot. It was such a memorable, unique experience; it gave great comfort to many people in these times of uncertainty. The horns and waving at the end showed such gratitude and appreciation and confirmed the close bond of the Risen Savior community. It was such a very powerful gesture and left staff members quite misty-eyed and emotional. Lastly, a great number of parishioners took advantage of our drive-up palm distribution on Palm Sunday. So many parishioners repeatedly told us that they were watching Mass online and reading the bulletin online, too. We are so grateful for the awesome community that is Risen Savior! It is our honor to serve this community in this most difficult Easter season!

Peaceful, reflective background music in the Sanctuary Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m-12:00 p.m. for quiet, individual reflection and prayer time.

Yesterday, today, always.

Have you ever experienced awe? Awe is commonly defined as a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder. A moment of awe has the ability to lift us up, out of ourselves, and immerse us into something that causes us to wonder about ourselves, the meaning of life, of truth. Awe is an experience of connection that links us to something that is beyond the normal happenings of life. For us who believe that the resurrected Christ is present in all of life and the totality of the universe, being touched by awe can lead us to exclaim, “My Lord and my God!” Pondering the vastness of God’s presence also brings us to a profound sense of God’s mercy, which is the showering of God’s unconditional love on each and every one of us, as God’s daughters and sons. When we internalize this mystery, we may find ourselves standing in awe once again and feeling an intense sense of peace.

“Peace be with you.” Breathe in and breathe out.

Origen del Domingo de la Misericordia Divina:

Santa Faustina: la necesidad que tiene la humanidad para el mensaje de la Misericordia divina cobró gran urgencia en el siglo XX, cuando la civilización empezó para experimentar el “eclipse del sentido de Dios” y, por tanto comenzó a perder el entendimiento de la santidad y dignidad inherente de la vida humana. En la década de 1930, Jesús escogió una humilde monja polaca, Sta. María Faustina Kowalska, para que recibiera revelaciones privadas sobre la Misericordia divina que constató en su Diario. San Juan Pablo explica: Precisamente el tiempo en que surgieron y se desarrollaron esas ideologías del mal como el nazismo y el comunismo. Sor Faustina se convirtió en pregonera del mensaje, según el cual la única verdad capaz de contrarrestar el mal de estas ideologías es que Dios es Misericordia, la verdad del Cristo misericordioso. Por eso, al ser llamado a la Sede de Pedro, sentí la necesidad imperiosa de transmitir las experiencias vividas en mi país natal, pero que son ya acervo de la Iglesia universal. (San Juan Pablo II, Memoria e identidad, 2005) Domingo de la Misericordia Divina:

El Diario de Sta. Faustina registra 14 ocasiones cuando Jesús le pidió que se observara la Fiesta de la Misericordia (Domingo de la Misericordia Divina), por ejemplo: Hija Mía, habla al mundo entero de Mi inconcebible misericordia. Deseo que la Fiesta de la Misericordia sea refugio y protección para todas las almas, especialmente para los pobres pecadores. Ese día están abiertas las entrañas de Mi misericordia. Derramo todo un mar de gracias sobre las almas que se acercan al manantial de Mi misericordia El alma que se confiese y reciba la Santa Comunión obtendrá el perdón total de las culpas y de las penas. .. Que ningún alma tema acercarse a Mí. ... Deseo que se celebre solemnemente el primer domingo después de la Pascua La humanidad no conocerá la paz hasta que no se dirija a la Fuente de Mi misericordia. (Diario, 699)

El 5 de mayo de 2000, cinco días después de la canonización de Sta. Faustina, el Vaticano decretó que el Segundo Domingo de Pascua desde ese momento sería conocido como el Domingo de la Misericordia Divina.

La Perspectiva de un Estudiante de Preparatoria

Mi nombre es Melanie Rodríguez. Soy estudiante de último año en Apple Valley High School, juego fútbol, softball y bailo. Todo esto ha sido muy devastador para mí y para todos mis compañeros de último año, porque no sabemos si podremos recuperar nuestro último año y tener todas nuestras tradiciones de High School. No creo que la situación me haya cambiado como persona, ya que he sido bendecida con una base firme de fe que me permite saber que con la adversidad viene la oportunidad de confiar en Dios y conocerlo mejor. Sin embargo, ha cambiado mi perspectiva en muchos aspectos. Me ha dado una apreciación mucho mayor por mi educación y cuántos de nosotros no hemos valorado la importancia de la escuela. También ha puesto en perspectiva lo que es importante (esencial) y lo que no. También tengo una nueva perspectiva de cuán rápido pueden cambiar las cosas y la velocidad a la que podemos adaptarnos si confiamos en el Señor y nos lo proponemos. Me mantengo conectado con mi fe a través de mi oración diaria y la bendición de nuestras comidas familiares. Mi familia y yo hemos tratado de mantener una actitud positiva teniendo noches de juegos familiares, haciendo manualidades y haciendo actividades. Personalmente, me he mantenido positivo comunicándome con mis amigos y seres queridos a diario, y teniendo tiempo para mí a diario para correr o escribir en un diario para aclarar mi mente. La mayor parte de mantenerse positivo en estos tiempos difíciles es tratar de encontrar un propósito para todo y saber que todo sucede por una razón y, lo más importante, tener fe en Dios.

Dealing with COVID-19: A High School Senior’s Perspective

My name is Melanie Rodriguez. I am a senior at Apple Valley High School. I play soccer, softball, and I dance.

This COVID-19 situation has all been very devastating for me and my fellow seniors because we don't know if we will be able to get back our senior year and have all of our senior traditions.

I don’t believe the situation has changed me as a person, since I have been blessed with a firm foundation of faith that allows me to know that with adversity comes opportunity to trust God and know him better. It has, however, changed my perspective on many aspects. It has given me a much greater appreciation for my education and how many of us have taken school for granted. It has also put into perspective what is important (essential) and what is not. I also have a new perspective on how quickly things can change and the speed at which we can adapt, if we trust in the Lord and we put our minds to it.

I stay connected to my faith through my daily prayer and blessing of our family meals. My family and I have tried to stay positive by having family game nights, making crafts and doing activities. Personally, I have stayed positive by communicating with my friends and loved ones daily, and having some time to myself daily to run or journal to clear my mind. The biggest part of staying positive through these tough times is trying to find a purpose for everything and knowing that everything happens for a reason and most importantly, having faith in God.
