Words of wisdom
The spirit of wisdom, as we discover in to-day’s first reading, comes to those who pray for her. Wisdom, like the word of God, carries a mes-sage of consolation as well as of great challenge. The Letter to the Hebrews tells us that the word of God, infused with the wisdom of God, is “sharper than any two-edged sword.” We cannot shrink from the wisdom of God, or from the word that has the power to penetrate our hearts and minds. Jesus, the living word of God, the embodiment of wis-dom, has strong, deeply penetrating words for the rich young man who comes to him seeking an-swers to his most profound questions. Just when the young man thought he had done enough to ful-fill God’s commands, more was asked of him. This is no less true for us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Saint Ignatius of Antioch’s Story
October 17
Born in Syria, Ignatius converted to Christianity and eventually became bishop of Antioch. In the year 107, Emperor Trajan visited Antioch and forced the Christians there to choose between death and apostasy. Ignatius would not deny Christ and thus was condemned to be put to death in Rome.
Ignatius is well known for the seven let-ters he wrote on the long journey from Antioch to Rome. Five of these letters are to churches in Asia Minor; they urge the Christians there to re-main faithful to God and to obey their superiors. He warns them against heretical doctrines, providing them with the solid truths of the Chris-tian faith.
The sixth letter was to Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna, who was later martyred for the faith. The final letter begs the Christians in Rome not to try to stop his martyrdom. “The only thing I ask of you is to allow me to offer the libation of my blood to God. I am the wheat of the Lord; may I be ground by the teeth of the beasts to be-come the immaculate bread of Christ.”
Ignatius bravely met the lions in the Cir-cus Maximus.
Reflection
Ignatius’s great concern was for the unity
and order of the Church. Even greater was his willingness to suffer martyrdom rather than deny his Lord Jesus Christ. He did not draw attention to his own suffering, but to the love of God which strengthened him. He knew the price of commitment and would not deny Christ, even to save his own life.
Saint Paul of the Cross’ Story—October 20
Born in northern Italy in 1694, Paul
Daneo lived at a time when many regarded Jesus as a great moral teacher but no more. After a brief time as a soldier, he turned to solitary pray-er, developing a devotion to Christ’s passion. Paul saw in the Lord’s passion a demonstration of God’s love for all people. In turn that devo-tion nurtured his compassion and supported a preaching ministry that touched the hearts of many listeners. He was known as one of the most popular preachers of his day, both for his words and for his generous acts of mercy.
In 1720, Paul founded the Congregation of the Passion, whose members combined devo-tion to Christ’s passion with preaching to the poor, and rigorous penances. Known as the Pas-sionists, they add a fourth vow to the traditional three of poverty, chastity, and obedience, to spread the memory of Christ’s passion among the faithful. Paul was elected superior general of the Congregation in 1747, spending the remain-der of his life in Rome.
Paul of the Cross died in 1775, and was canonized in 1867. Over 2,000 of his letters and several of his short writings have survived. 2019 Mass Book The Mass book for the year 2019 is open. Mass intentions can be reserved at the Rectory office Monday thru Friday. You can request Masses for the living, in thanksgiving, for your special intentions or your deceased family mem-bers and friends.
The altar bread at Mass becomes the body of Jesus Christ and the wine at Mass be-comes the blood of Jesus Christ. If you wish to have the altar bread and or the altar wine memorialized in memory of a loved one, to honor a special occasion, or a special intention please call Sacred Heart Parish Office at 949-0028. The offering for each one is $100 for the month. The memorial will be published in the bulletin the first week of the month. Thank you.

Dear friends in the Lord:
At Baptism, each of us is marked by the Lord and entrusted with a special re-sponsibility to tell the world of His message and invitation. We are, indeed, called to
World Mission Sunday affords all baptized Catholics an opportunity to cele-
brate their missionary vocation through prayer and sacrifice for the missionary work of the Church.
This year's World Mission Sunday, October 20t, marks the 110th Anniversary of our "mission
independence." Through 1908, the Church in the United States was the beneficiary of the generosity of the Catholic faithful of Europe through the Society of the Propagation of the Faith. In fact, two-thirds of the very first collection of the Propagation of the Faith, in 1822, was sent to the Church in America, making it possible to build churches and schools, edu-cate clergy and religious, provide for the good works of religious communities, and support evangelization here at home. By a 1908 papal decree, the designation "mission territory" was removed from the United States. More than one hundred years later, as we recall our own mission history, we are called upon to assist both spiritually and financially the more than 1,150 "young churches" in Asia, Africa, the Pacific Islands, and Latin America, all of which have the same needs that the United States once had.
With this in mind, please be as generous as your means will allow this World
Mission Sunday so that the Propagation of the Faith can continue to spread the "Good News" to the growing faith communities of our day. So, too, following the call of our Holy Father, Pope Francis, let us pray that our celebration of World Mission Sun-day will generate within us a renewed awareness of the need to proclaim the Gospel to all corners of the world.
With prayerful best wishes, I am,
Faithfully in Christ,
