Plans For The Immediate Future
G raham’s announcement of his resignation is sad for him and Julie and for the benefice as a whole. The immediate concern for my fellow clergy and Readers is to try to provide you all with
continued worship and pastoral support. Following a meeting with the Archdeacon we hope that some additional support will be made available to us.
You will understand that there will be some changes to the normal patterns of worship. We shall continue to issue regular bulletins to keep you informed of changes.
We really need your support in working through the coming months of the interregnum and there will be tasks which we hope you will continue with or take on others to sustain the life and work of the churches.
We also want to ensure there is appropriate pastoral support for yourselves and for parishioners who have particular needs such as the sick or those wish to have communion at home etc.
Communication is key to ensuring things work, so do please let us know of matters which arise on which we might offer advice or provide help. In return we’ll lend a ‘listening ear’ and keep you all informed as things develop.
Our contact details appear in the magazine. Any general enquiries should go through Hazel Pullan: [email protected] or telephone 01943 466098.

A Message From The Archdeacon
A s many of you will know, the Revd Graham Shield has been unwell for some time now. After due consideration he feels he is unable to continue in full time ministry at present. He has therefore
decided to resign as Vicar. It is envisaged that Julie and Graham will remain in the vicarage until they formally vacate it on 30th November. In the meantime he will not resume duties.
I have met with some of the retired clergy who have been providing an excellent ministry during this unsettled time. I am deeply grateful to them for their generosity of time and selflessness and for their desire to see things work. I shall be meeting with the Churchwardens and the Area Dean in the very near future to discuss the way forward and to take them through the vacancy process which doesn’t begin formally until 30th November. We shall keep you all informed of developments.
In the meantime the parishes will continue to be supported by your team of retired clergy and Readers and I am doing my utmost to secure additional clerical support for you I look forward to joining the PCC members and others on 3rd October.
Please hold Graham and Julie and the whole Benefice in your prayers.

Church services are as shown in the Church Magazine and we now have a web site, http://www.farnleyallsaints.org

Our social and fund raising events this year have included several coffee mornings and tea events, a bluebell walk followed by cream tea, BBQ and an Autumn Supper is planned for October.
As a smaller country church Farnley is well placed for weddings with its easy access and safe off road parking area.

Roger and Barbara Davey from Ilkley Playhouse were the speakers at our September meeting. Roger began by giving us a brief history of the drama group, known from the beginning as the Ilkley Players, who produced their first play in 1929. After using various venues around the town they finally settled in part of the Liberal Club in Weston Road and in 1960 were able to purchase the freehold of the entire building and could then begin to convert it all. Roger went on to explain how they select which plays they'll perform each year starting with sixty titles and eventually whittling these down to eight. He also told us a little about how the sets are built, the sound and lighting, the auditioning process, and the intensive rehearsals which take place before each production finally opens.
Then Roger introduced Barbara who gave a very interesting account of their production of 'The Jungle Book' which they performed in Ilkley this year and which the cast and crew then took to the Minack Theatre in Cornwall during the summer. She gave us a brief history about how this wonderful and unique open air theatre was created, perched in the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic.
She'd brought along some of the inventive costumes and masks which were made for the production. Barbara had agreed to take on the job of making the masks which involved a great deal of research and a lot of trial and error working out the best materials to use and how the actors could keep them in place whilst performing. It was truly fascinating to learn how she did it and the masks were quite amazing. Then we had a PowerPoint tour of the costume department at the Playhouse and shots of the final production in the spectacular surroundings of the Minack Theatre. Once again a fascinating evening.
Our visit to Menwith Hill in August was an eye-opener, especially for those of us who went all the way up to the dish inside one of the golfballs ! Never imagined we'd do that. We enjoyed the Celebrating Yorkshire Day with Amanda Owen, the Yorkshire Shepherdess, and just last week a team from our WI took part in the preliminary heat of our Federation quiz when over 60 teams from North Yorkshire West compete. Although we won at our venue we won't know for a while if we scored enough points to go forward to the final, so watch this space.
As usual we have our craft and walking groups, and a monthly lunch get together and in October our speakers are Jill Turton and Amanda Wragg, restaurant critics for the Yorkshire Post and restaurant inspectors for a number of national food guides. They're passionate about good food and claim to have eaten at every halfway decent restaurant in the whole of Yorkshire...... well someone has to do it !

The October events start on Tuesday 3rd October from 7.30pm to 9.00pm with a talk “Packhorse days and packhorse ways”. That evening, Janet Niepokojczycka tells us about the days when horses carried food, drink and raw materials – mail, gossip and contraband! And you’ll learn about several pack-horse journeys made by Janet herself. With delicious home-made refreshments, the cost is £7.50 (members £6.00)
As ever, our walks are proving popular. On Tuesday 10th October, our weekday walk is Low Snowden and Timble Gill Beck. The walk starts at Swinsty Moor Car Park at 9am. Good tracks with views, to the replaced Ramblers’ Bridge and Rakesbridge Hippings. Up to Low Snowden, then Timble Gill beck with more flood damaged crossings. A total of 5 miles. Cost is £12.50 (members £10.00) and includes a tasty 2 course lunch with tea/coffee and will finish around 2 pm. Fingers crossed for good weather!! We are sorry, but on this event, no dogs.
Thursday 12th October from 7.30pm to 9.00pm sees a talk from Summerbridge man Nevin Ward, Nidderdale History on Stage. Nevin is well known for writing The Dam Play, the story of the Nidderdale reservoirs, and a play called Gouthwaite Hall. He will describe the background to the two plays, and how they came to be staged. With delicious home-made refreshments, the cost is £7.50 (members £6.00)

All in the month of October It was: 500 years ago: on 31st Oct 1517 that German priest and theologian Martin Luther is said to have posted his Ninety-Five Theses on the door of All Saints’ Church in Wittenberg on this date, triggering the start of the Protestant Reformation. 175 years ago: on 20th Oct 1842 that Grace Darling, British heroine, died. She had famously rescued survivors of a shipwreck off Northumberland in 1838. She and her father used a rowing boat as the sea was too rough for the lifeboat. (She dies of tuberculosis, aged 26.) 125 years ago: on 6th Oct 1892 that Alfred, Lord Tennyson, died. This popular poet was Poet Laureate (1850-92) and is best known for ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’. 100 years ago: on 12th Oct 1917 that WW1’s Third Battle of Ypres took place, the First Battle of Passchendaele, in Belgium. It was a German defensive victory, but a costly battle on both sides. Anzac forces suffered heavy losses. 90 years ago: on 6th Oct 1927 that the US premiere of the film ‘The Jazz Singer’ took place. It was the first full-length film with syn-chronised dialogue and marked the beginning of the sound era. 70 years ago: on 5th Oct 1947 that US President Harry Truman gave the first televised presidential address from the White House. 65 years ago: on 6th Oct 1952 that the world premiere of Agatha Christie’s play ‘The Mousetrap’ took place in Nottingham. It opened in London on 25th November 1952 and is still running, mak-ing it the world’s longest-running play. It has been performed more than 25,000 times.

60 years ago: on 10th Oct 1957 that the Windscale nuclear reactor in Cumbria caught fire. The Windscale (now Sellafield) fire spread radioactive contamination over the UK and Europe. It was the worst nuclear accident in British history and is thought to have caused hundreds of cancers. 50 years ago: on 25th Oct 1967 that an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease began on a farm in Oswestry, Shropshire. It spread rapidly, with 2,228 confirmed cases throughout the north-west Midlands and north Wales. By the time it had been brought under control in June 1968, 400,000 animals had been slaughtered. 30 years ago: on 15th Oct 1987 that the Great Storm hit southern England. Hurricane-force winds killed 18 people and caused £2billion worth of damage. 15 million trees were lost. Weather forecasters were criticised for failing to predict the severity of the storm. 25 years ago: on 13th Oct 1992 that the British Government an-nounced that 31 of the country’s 50 remaining deep coal mines would close by March 1993, putting 31,000 miners out of work. Six mines were closed immediately. 20 years ago: on 2nd Oct 1997 that British scientists Moira Bruce and John Collinge showed that new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) was the same disease as BSE in cattle. Also 20 years ago: on 13th Oct 1997 that PM Tony Blair met Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams in Belfast. He was the first Prime Min-ister to meet Sinn Fein’s leadership since David Lloyd George in the 1920s. 15 years ago: from 23rd to 26th Oct 2002 that the Moscow Thea-tre Siege took place. Up to 50 Chechen rebels stormed a theatre and took about 700 people hostage, threatening to blow up the building if Russia did not withdraw from Chechnya. Russian special forces used toxic gas before moving in. Almost all the rebels plus 129 hostages were killed.

Washburn Parish Council
Meagill Lane Cemetery Chapel
W ashburn Parish Council are responsible for the maintenance, repair and improvement of the Meagill Lane Chapel located in Fewston cemetery. The upkeep of the cemetery is the
responsibility of Harrogate Borough Council.
In spring, the Parish Council commissioned repairs to be undertaken to protect and restore the window frames and chapel walls. During the summer the Councillors themselves arranged work parties to undertake internal painting and cleaning works, with outdoor work done by the parish caretaker, in order to maintain the building for future users.
This stone built chapel has stood in Fewston Cemetery since 1911 and was originally built as a result of public subscription. Under threat of demolition in the 1980’s, Washburn Parish Council took ownership of the building in 1991 with the intention of it continuing to be used by mourners and members of the public attending the cemetery as a shelter in inclement weather. However, it has also been used for services prior to a burial.
Located in the centre of Fewston cemetery, this 70 square metre building currently has no electricity, water or toilets. However, we would like local residents and surrounding communities to be able to use the building. Please let us know how you would like to see the building used in the future. If you have any thoughts or suggestions please send an e-mail to the Clerk at [email protected]
The next meeting of Washburn Parish Council will be held on Monday 6th November 2017 at the Robinson Library in Timble commencing at 7.30pm. Should you wish to contact any of your councillors please e-mail [email protected]

Love
(Mt 22:34-40)
When we don’t know what to do, when we don’t know where to turn,
how to deal with that situation, how to manage that difficult per-
son, Jesus says,
LOVE, love, love. Receive my love.
Know my reality in your heart, then reach out and love.
Love God, love others, love yourself
and everything will change.
Jesus says love will do it. Believe Him!
