Objective(s) of Project

• Overall Project Objective: – This project proposes to provides reliable and safe

drinking water to the 400 residents of Chayangba village, Solukhumbo region, Nepal. The project will replace a non functional system of pipes and a single community tap stand with a properly engineered source collection and distribution system flowing to community tap stands within an easy walk of all the village’s residents. The benefits of this project include the reduction of waterbourne illnesses, improved productivity, and education on personal hygiene.

General Design Parameters

• Demand estimate – 18,000 liters per day– 70 households– Population per household: ~7– Per capita water use - 45 liters per person– Demand for each area estimated & pipeline designed

accordlingly

• Spring source– Observed 1 liter/sec….(Site assessment #1)– Assume 0.5 liter/sec in dry season

• Storage– 1 day storage– Source protection reservoir serves as storage

13

Page 14: Chyangba Water Project ( Pem Dorjee Sherpa)

Engineers Without Borders – USA : Assessment Plan © 2006 Slide #

General Design Parameters

• Maximum pressure based on schedule II, HDPE pipe or 80psi

• Pipeline– Diameters are varied to design flow rates– All pipes will be HDPE purchased in Katmandu– Depth line to be buried to 2’– Connections will be made with banded over-sleeves

• Pressure relief boxes– Placed to restrict pressure to a maximum of 80 psi and/or to

restrict tap stand pressure to 40 psi

Metrics

Technical:• What metrics will be used to determine the technical success of this

project?– What types of data will need to be collected before and after the

project is implemented to evaluate success of the project?• What are the future plans for visiting and following up with any

problems that may arise?

Economics: (If your project has an economic impact)• What metrics will be used to measure the affect of this project on

the community? • What data are needed? • From where will your team collect the data?

– Follow up trips & surveys– Dates missed due to being sick & lost productivity– Not direct impact to economy

24

Page 25: Chyangba Water Project ( Pem Dorjee Sherpa)

Metrics

Health: • Health information Data

– List data– Infant mortality was cut in half in 90s– Surveys of illnesses– Likely a lot of diseases water related– Nearest health care center – ½ day walk

• People prefer another hospital further away– Tests on agricultural runoff – poorest people drink ag runoff

• What metrics will be used to measure the affect of this project on the community? – No implementation component with this phase, but in future, will

determine prevalence of water borne illnesses, mortality rates• Follow up surveys • Specifically focus on lower village which mainly relied ag runoff as water

supply

25

Page 26: Chyangba Water Project ( Pem Dorjee Sherpa)

Engineers Without Borders – USA : Assessment Plan © 2006 Slide #

Health

26

• High incidence of gastro-intestinal disorders

• High infant mortality rate

• Health assessment survey adopted from EWB-Nepal, 12% of households surveyed

• Metric is decrease in GI illnesses (goal is 50% decrease in first year)

Page 27: Chyangba Water Project ( Pem Dorjee Sherpa)

Engineers Without Borders – USA : Assessment Plan © 2006 Slide #

Community Involvement

• Village water council established– Water and system usage laws passed– Responsible for siting system elements– Tax collection– Water quality montoring

• Each household contributes 10 days of labor towards construction

• Single employee will have system maintenance responsibilities – Salary provided by tax collection

27

Page 28: Chyangba Water Project ( Pem Dorjee Sherpa)

Engineers Without Borders – USA : Assessment Plan © 2006 Slide #

Community Education Goals

• Villagers understand the importance of clean drinking water and hygiene

– kitchen cleanliness and organization

• Villagers understand factors in water quality

• Education by EWB and water employee (monitor)

28

Trip Details - Living Arrangements

• Transportation: as a group when possible, air to Phavlu, by foot to village‘

• Housing: community is providing house for the volunteers

• Volunteers will eat local food and purify local water

32

Trip Details - Safety & Emergency Plan

• Safety Plan– Travel in groups of two or more– Determine meeting place if separation occurs at any stage during travel– Each group will carry a first aid kit and water– CPR/First Aid certification for Health Point person

• Emergency Plan & Exit Strategy– Team members will have travel insurance which includes medical care and

evacuation insurance– Hospital 10km away (Phavlu)

• Are there any State Department Warnings for this country?– No – will monitor as travel dates approach

• Are there any other safety concerns for traveling at this time? – No – will monitor as travel dates approach. Maoist threat substantially reduced

since elections in February 2008.
