which offers a wide range of enhanced Ethernet capabilities

and features above the minimum standards—defined by

organizations such as the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF)—that

significantly accelerate and automate scalable Ethernet service

creation and activation.

Ciena’s CESD products, depicted in Figures 1 and 2, enable

service providers to realize new levels of speed, differentiation,

operational scalability, and reliability in delivering revenue-

generating Ethernet business services.

Service DeliverySwitches(LE-311v, CN 3911,

CN 3920, CN 3940,

and CN 3960) are

available with a range

of 10/100M Ethernet,

Gigabit Ethernet (GbE)

and 10GbE physical

port counts, to fit small,

medium, and large

customer sites and

multi-tenant office

buildings precisely,

with placement in

customer premises,

on the sides of buildings,

or on utility poles.

Service Aggregation Switches(CN 5140 and CN 5305) provide FE/GbE/10GbE

aggregation to better fill the transport facilities

within both the metro access and aggregation tiers

and ultimately minimize the number of IP/MPLS

router ports with which they interwork. These

switches can be deployed in a wide variety of

locations, including business parks, outside plant

cabinets, and in central offices.

The CESD portfolio incorporates the latest

innovations in Ethernet switching technology, control

plane protocols, encapsulation techniques, Quality

of Service (QoS) capabilities, and Operations,

Administration, and Maintenance (OAM)

mechanisms. This combination enables the service

provider to deliver carrier-grade business services

backed up by verifiable Service Level Agreements

(SLAs) with rigorous performance and availability

guarantees.

However, the CESD portfolio is much more than just

a set of network devices. It is a unified portfolio that

employs a common service-aware operating system

and Ethernet Services Manager (ESM) system to

provide exceptional operational efficiency and

consistent system and service attributes across all

Ethernet access and aggregation applications.

With Ciena’s CESD portfolio, service providers can

optimize all aspects of the service lifecycle,

accelerate time to revenue, and increase profitability.

The common service-aware operating system and

ESM automate device and service provisioning and

provide the ability to implement the latest

standards-based Ethernet technical advances across

all platforms in a network rapidly and automatically.

Ciena’s Ethernet business service solutions enable

the transition to service-driven networks—

combining software intelligence and programmable

devices to create low-touch, high-velocity networks.

Problem

Utility and petrochemical enterprises rely on slow and

expensive connectivity media, such as dial lines, to

transport critical infrastructure-monitoring data such

as SCADA. Security applications, including outdoor

cameras, can not be monitored in real time with

current levels of capacity at the substations.

Solution

The CN 3911 eliminates slow, expensive copper dial

lines, converging the substation applications onto a

single, manageable Ethernet network. It also provides

ample bandwidth to support video, voice, and data at

the substations, for better protection and

management of utilities’ field assets.

Problem

Bandwidth-aggressive enterprise applications such as storage,

BC/DR, video, and server virtualization traffic require large amounts of

bandwidth to run correctly. Typically, large and numerous hardware

platforms would be required to deliver multiple high-capacity services

such as 10GbE, increasing maintenance, management, and service

delivery costs.

Solution

Deliver multiple 10GbE and 1GbE services over a single platform.

Utilize a full line rate of 48 Gb/s to deliver more high-bandwidth

services in a market—without significantly increasing management

and maintenance costs—and reduce rack, power, and cooling space

required to deliver the same capacity with other service methods.
