The 2018 Peter Allen Festival in Tenterfield, held on Friday 7 to Sunday 9 September was a resounding success. Over 1,000 people came and enjoyed the two and a half day festival. The highlight of the Festival was the 3 cabaret shows by Danny Elliott – Tenterfield to Rio, held at the Tenterfield School of Arts. Dannys energy, enthusiasm and emotion had the audience in tears one minute, then up dancing and shaking their maracas (a Festival souvenir) the next. After the first 2 shows on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon sold out, a third show was opened on Sunday morning. Friday evening saw the official opening of The Peter Allen Festival in Bruxner Park with a good audience who were treated to entertainment in the Park following the official proceedings. The Hon Barnaby Joyce MP and The Hon Thomas George MP were in attendance, as funding for the Festival was received both through the Destination NSW Incubator Event Fund (State Government) and the Building Better Regions Fund (Federal Government). Honorary guests to the Festival who knew Peter Allen growing up included Jenny Godwin, Eileen Kelly and Lorraine Heath who told some of their stories. Speakers also included Vince Sherry, past Chair of the Tenterfield Chamber of Tourism, Industry & Business, Mayor Peter Petty and Helen Duroux who gave the Welcome to Country. A Smoking Ceremony by Uncle Darren Daley from the Bundjalung people and Donald Kirk and Uncle Bruce McIntosh from the Kamilaroi Nation welcomed attendees. On Saturday, Rouse Street closed to traffic and became The Peter Allen Boulevard. Featuring extended trading hours by shops and cafes, music and market stalls, over 1,000 people enjoyed the unique opportunity to frolic down the centre line of what is normally a busy highway. As a finish to the Festival, the School of Arts hosted the Peter Allen Story Music Supper Club, put together by the very talented Peter Harris. With 160 attendees watching Peter Allens life on the big screen, there were more tears and laughter. Other events over the weekend included the I Go to Rio Dinner, Tenterfield Jam Session, Jackaroo Breakfast at Arrajay Downs, Quilt Show, Open Gardens at Glenrock Gardens, and plenty of live music in the various venues around town. The excellent feedback being received will ensure next years festival continues to grow and is even bigger and better. What a great event for Tenterfield”, said Mayor Peter Petty. Congratulations to the Festival Directors, Matt Sing and Josh Moylan who did an incredible job of organising this Festival. Congratulations also to the Tenterfield Chamber of Tourism, Industry & Business for getting the Festival off the ground, and to all the volunteers who worked tirelessly over the weekend and in the lead up”. FROM THE MAYOR I write this message following the Council’s election for Mayor and Deputy Mayor and am humbled, but proud, to have been re-elected for a further two (2) years. I am humbled that my fellow Councillors have chosen me to lead our Council for a seventh year, and proud because I am passionate about our area and full of pride for the Tenterfield Shire Council - our cohesive and dedicated Councillors, our enthusiastic and committed staff and all our wonderful communities. Our resilient rural folk continue to deal with the ongoing dry conditions. I sincerely thank Joel Soper of the Tenterfield Salvation Army for the huge amount of support he and Yolandi have provided in assisting those in our communities who are facing an extreme struggle.

Joel is coordinating all the services provided by Council and other community organisations, including the provision of potable water for those whose tanks are dry, and the use of shower and washing facilities at the Tenterfield Showground, provided by the Showground Trust. Why Leave Town gift vouchers for groceries, stock feed and other services are distributed to those in need which assists in keeping our business community running and our 4 Hay Days.

To our coastal neighbours who have provided the truck loads of hay which have come up the mountain to feed our hungry stock, a huge thank you. You have truly shown the great Australian spirit of mateship.

TENTERFIELD POOL TO OPEN SEASON WITH NEW OPERATOR

Council is pleased to advise that the Tenterfield War Memorial Baths now has appointed a new Pool Contractor. The contract is for 2 years with the option to extend for a further 4 years.

Just SportsnFitness are a well-established company managing gym, swim, sports and leisure facilities with over 23 pools, water parks, gyms and cafes in the Ipswich and Brisbane areas. They pride themselves on clean facilities, good customer service and programmed swimming activities.

“We are pleased to welcome Directors Justin Lemberg (Olympic Bronze Swimming Medallist, 1984 Los Angeles Olympics), Vicki Martin and Matt Johnstone to our local pool”, said Mayor Peter Petty. “Justin has property and family here in Tenterfield and is looking forward to being able to share his passion of swimming with the community”, the Mayor added. Experienced managers Lauren and Josh Lavea and their 3 children are very excited to be relocating to Tenterfield from Brisbane and welcome the tree change. The company also has expectations of employing local members of the community to complete the staffing requirements at the pool.

Mayor Peter Petty expressed his thanks to the former pool operator Jeff Moss, noting his dedication and professionalism. “I wish Jeff every success in the future”, said Mayor Petty.
