CABSON 8. BARNES CIRCUS.. .by Karen Cart

The entire circus community, especially themanagement and employees of Carson & Barneswere saddened by the death of John "Elephant'Carroll. His home was Al G. Kelly-Miller Bros, and Carson & Barnes for over 30 years; every-one associated with either show will rememberhim. Although John had no immediate family,he had a targe circus family and many, manyfriends. He will be sorely missed by all thatknew him. There is a vacancy at the elephantpicket line that cannot be filled. The youngest member of the Carson & Barnesentourage is Barbara Elizabeth "Libby" Garcia, she was bom Feb. 27th. Momma and Daddyare Jaime and Lisa Garcia. Jaime is big top suptand Lisa is on reserve seats. Grandma, BarabaFulton is sure proud of Libby, as is Great-GreatAunt. Isla Miller.Adrienne Moos, having just returned from atour of Spain which she enjoyed immensely, joined the show at Nacogdoches, Texas, on Apr21st. She is performing and working on reserveseats. Her parents, Don and Jackie Moos, havethe cookhouse and pice car. Jackie is also pur-chasing agent and mail agent. ding anniversary on April 9th. Rumor has itthat they both had forgotten it was their anni-versary.Kristin Byrd, 4 yr. old daughter of Geary andBarbara Byrd, is now participating in Wally andChona Eastwood's unicycle act. In addition toKristin, are Claudia Eastwood, 6 yr. old daugh-ter of Howard and Chona Eastwood; SashaRawU, 7 yr. old daughter of David and CarolRawls; and Diana Perez Resales, 5 yr. olddaughter of Chava Perez. Wally is superb on theunicycle, and the little girls' dancing is some-thing to see.On April 26th, Traci Byrd celebrated her 8thbirthday with a wiener roast for her Carson &Barnes and Hugo school friends, at her homein Hugo, Okla. Her borthday is actually the27th, but since the circus was only 50 milesaway at Clarksville, Texas, she celebrated a dayearly in order to have all her friends together. The invitations read Hugo-Lake, but as it wascool and threatening rain, the party was heldat the Miller-Byrd home. Traci and her 35guests roasted wieners and marshallows overan open fire; then enjoyed ice cream cakes inthe shape of "Snoopy" on the appropriatelydecorated patio. Everyone had a wonderfultime, and all agreed they hoped Carson & Bar-nes would be close to Hugo on Traci's nextbirthday.

CIRCUS LITTLE. BUT GREAT REAL... by Gene Kirkman

There's something special about a circus, butextra special under the canvas, the "Big Top".The Roberts Bros. Circus is one that still doesit under canvas, a clean pretty 'big top* withits flags flapping in the breeze of spring. It isworth the price. It's just good clean family en-tertainment. That's what you get if you seethe Roberts Bros. Circus. That's what it wasat Yadkinville. N.C.. on May 19th.Weeds and grass grow where sawdust wouldhave been in the old days, but the odor of cot-ton candy mingled with popcorn popping wasa good smell and real. This real circus was not like watching TV oran arena show. You were close to the show, you could feel the real people. There was Dor-is Earl, an owner with husband Bob, on thefront door. Bob was away on advance work. You saw Jeff and Ginny Earl, an attractivehard-working, talented young couple, doingvarious and many acts. There was Bobby Earlwith the "Moon Walk" and other jobs. BobbySnyder at the organ, with his wooden "PalJimmy". Jo Mar the clown, in addition wasselling souvenirs. Other troupers were the Ma-cias Family and the Feirrena Family, bothdoing just great acts. If I was giving out awardsmy top award would go to George Rowe (nothis show name) an illusionist. It may not have been "The Greatest Show onEarth", but George and all the real peopleworked hard to put on a great show.

On The CoverThis week's cover picture is another of the veryfine water color paintings created by Robert B.Johnson.The scene is that of an early day circus, it is justgetting dark and the tear-down is well underwayThe two pole big top is in the background. Theside show banners and top on the right are com-ing down, and a heavy wagon with four horseteam, a camel and a lantern starts off towardsthe trains. The performing horses are tied up between thetrees on the left. Their tent has already beensent off to the train.

JERRY BOOKER provided much of the circusbackground material for last month's produc-tion of "Carnival" at Mt. Tamalpias in MannCounty, Calif. He also presented his giant horse'Brigadoon' as part of the program.

JOHN CUNEO visited the Beany-Cole Circusat Langhorn, Pa., late last month.

EMERSON STILL BITTER

Ralph Emerson, of Newington, Conn., who operated a wild animal farm there for 25 yean, was forced to sell his property six years agowhen the state scheduled a highway throughthe area.In 1974, the State Dept. of Transportation ac-quired 38 acres of Emerson's property. Nowthe controversial highway plans have been a-bandoned and the property lies idle. The statewants to sell it.City officials would like to have the city buythe property for use as an industrial park site.Emerson says he is still bitter about what thestate did to him. "Next to my family that ani-mal farm was my greatest love/' he says. "Kidsand grownups from all over would come tovisit the animals and have a fun time."Back then the animals were valued at $40,000to $50,000 and today they would be worth atleast twice that much. The cost of starting upanother animal farm on the property would beprohibitive for him."In today's market it would cost about $100,000 for the animals and another $100,000 to

CIRCUS QUIPS...by KARLJ. BISCHOFF

THERE IS NO JUSTICE for most show peopleIf you make your income tax out correctly youmight go on welfare, if you don't go to jail.

THE old quarrel between NORTH and SOUTHhas spread to include EAST and WEST and isnow called Circus Routes.

SOME circuses might find it hard to get goodmen because some are ONE ULCER MEN FORTWO ULCER JOBS.

STRANGE - some showmen who are oldenough to know better are always looking for agirt not quite that old.

SOME SHOWS play towns so small that every-body knows whose check is good and whosehusband isn't.

The Les Kimris appeared at our Cleveland Arenawhen we had the AI Si rat Grotto Circus there inFeb. 1940. This was a high act, a fellow riding amotorcycle around a platform with a girt hang-ing by one foot on a trapeze suspended belowthe motorcycle.I recall talking with Terrell Jacobs in the dres-sing room. One day as the lions were run thruthe wooden chutes to the arena, so the cagescould be cleaned, the steel arena door was ajarand two lions roamed out into the arena floor. There followed a few minutes of excitement, but then it was over as they chased the lionsback into the performing arena. The elephant which were kept in our PilsnerCellar area, pulled the covering off the over-head pipes during their stay there.Lee Powell, who played the title rol of theLone Ranger in the movies of 1938 was there. He rode his white horse around the building, with just the spotlights shining on him. Some of the Pallenberg bears were on the showI remember almost every night after the per-formance the trainer would walk a bear up thestairs to the American Legion Club for a bottle

MAGIC • • • b v FRANK HERMAN

Except for a comedy wrist tie it's been thirtyyears since I dabbled in the field of escapes. Inthe days before I got lucky with the "SkipperFrank" TV series I fed my family with supermarket shows.

To gather a crowd and impress store managersI needed a gimmick that was sure fire and the"Surfboard Challenge Escape" was born. JimConley built me an over-sized surfboard thatwas rimmed with metal lined holes. This with along length of chain was left on display for minute inspection a week before my Saturday ma-gic show.

Customers were invited to bring their ownlocks and chain me to the board in any fashion. The stunt got a lot of publicity and productsponsors were pleased with the extra display

that their products got in conjunction with thegiant surfboard. If the 'Art of Escapes' series of books by John

Novak had come along in those days I am surethat I would have delved deeper into this excit-ing, money making field. I have never met No-vak but I look forward to meeting him. I enjoy-ed all of his series but particularly enjoyed histreatises on the Strait Jacket and the Sub Trunk

In his "Escapes from a Strait Jacket" is every-thing you wanted to know and didn't know whoto ask. He covers legit and gimmicked jackets, allthe thrill angles like being suspended from a buming rope, to a very commercial stand-up routinethat includes a ton of laughs. John's writing styleis bright with a no npnesense or pipe dream ap-proach. He does not just impart secrets and me-thods but includes the hints that provides aud-ience pleasing exhibitions.

"Metamorphosis and Other Escapes" by JohnNovak concentrates on the substitution trunk il-lusion in all its aspects. He covers the flashyspeed presentations and the serious challengestyles. Again he thoroughly explains the varioustypes of trunks and boxes, cabinets, sacks, handcuffs, and all the elements that are used to en-hance this popular illusion. Showmanship andpublicity angles abound.

Novak has written other books on escapes thatcover chains, ropes, hand cuffs and other exoticrestraints. He has the great advantage of doinghis own drawing to illustrate his lucid writingstyle. The books are published by Mickey Hades,Box 2242, Seattle, Wash. At $7.50 all are recommended values. Hades is one of the world's larg-est publishers for mystery entertainers, a coupleof dollars will bring you his list of exciting titles.

I have been on a lecture tour that encompassed6,000 miles from coast-to-coast and then a boutwith the flu that laid me low.

NEW CIRCUS TENT IS BLESSED

The Rev. John DeGiorio (riqht) and Rev. Da-vid Tetrault, are shown in the picture on theopposite page as they throw Blessed Water onthe new Beany-Cole Circus big top.The Blessing of the new circus tent also inclu-ded a Blessing for the circus people. It wasmore than simply seeking divine approval ofthe tent that serves the circus, for it was a re-flection of the religious nature of circus folks. As he blessed the tent Rev. John M. DeGiorioprayed:"We are your fools for Christ, wiping awaytears with the roar of laughter, calming fearswith the thrilling surprises that life holds forus all, healing pain with the shouts of excite-ment for all the greatness you have given usand all the wonders you do for and with us.We are your people and you are our God."Towards the end of the service Father DeGiorio included his blessing of the people. Before making his tour around the tent throwing Blessed Water onto the new canvas, hecalled on God to "bless ... the artists, the en-tertainers . . . those who uplift. Bless themand keep them from harm."

THE 8LACKSTONE MAGIC SHOW...by DanWaldron

The Blackstone Show opened on BroadwayMay 19th to reviews which bode well for thebox office. Billed as "Blackstone, the Magni-ficent Musical Magic Show" it is installed atthe Majestic Theatre, right across the streetfrom the hit show, "Barnum.""Had even the cynics in the crowd gaspingwith wonder," said the New York Post. "Thecreme de la creme of magic acts/' And "Har-ry Blackstone is a master of the magical arts... His timing is formidable, and his sense ofrapport with the audience would make grad-uates of R(oyal) A(cademy) of D(ramatic)A(rts) weep with envy.""We've seen it all before but never better/'said the Daily News. "What it has mainly isHarry Blackstone, suave son of the famousBlackstone, an heir to his full bag of tricks. And what a splendid assortment they are!"Even the staid New York Times admitted:

June 9,1980

"Given the ground rules, one can enjoy thismagic act - and be bamboozled by the mys-teries." "Blackstone is a master of his pro-fession."Variety gave its savvy show business apprai-sal, noting among other thincp that Black-stone's prestidigitational extraganza doesn'tmiss a trick in its determination to pleasethe audience, and ends the long review:"Blackstone is a hocus-pocus hoedown thatjust might turn into a bigger Broadway hitthan enyone expected."With a top ticket price of $22.50 it will needall the drawing power it can get; but by NewYork standards that's normal arithmetic. Pre-sent plans call for a summer-long run, endingaround Labor Day.

Dear Mr.Ashton.

I want to compliment you on your very fine clown act. Iattended the American Continental Circus while it was herein San Angelo, Tx. (flarch l?th. The entire performance wasvery good. I see the show every year when it is here and itcontinues to be stronger each year.

As a member of Circus Pans Assn. of America, I see quite afew shows each season and I must say that your particular actwas very impressive to me. I thought it was the highlight ofof the entire performance. Seems to me that there are fewerand fewer really good acts of this caliber around any more.

Please tell the other folks with the show, that I enjoyedthe show and always look forward to it each new season.

When in San Angelo, If I can ever be of any service to you, your family or anyone with the show, please feel free to callon me.

Sincerely,

BIG JOHN'S FIESTA DE CIRCO,..by Fifi Reed

"Ladies and Gentlemen, Children of all AgeslEdward Russell presents Big John Strong's Piestade Circo!"And with those words, on a grassy lot underblue skies at Williams AFB at Chandler Ariz.,May 18th, the show came alive under the verycapable direction of one of the masters of cir-cus ringmastering, Ed Russell. He has selectedan excellent group of performers to treat thepublic to some of the best of real, traditionalcircus performing, A combination of experien-ced, polished pros and exciting newcomersprovides an hour and a half of well paced funand excitement. It is rewarding to watch thefaces of CHILDREN OF ALL AGES, as themagic of the performers takes over. The thrills start with rides on Neena, the ele-phant for those brave enough to dare and therewere many. The show then gets underway withthe following acts. The Hiawatha Liberty ponies presented hy Wil-

... from Sheilah Sloan

Have just returned from Sarasota after spend-ing some time with Barrie at Great AdventurePark in New Jersey. While there, Joe and Elizabeth Bauer gave abarqecue party for the performers of "CircusInternational" for Mother's Day. Of course allthe Bauers were there along with David McMil-lan, the Hernandez Troupe, the Les Moines, the Flying Torraldos, Barrie and myself. We allhad a good time. The day before I left we had some real excite-ment at the park. It was a day off and almosteveryone had gone to the beach. A forest firebroke out and was raging about 400 yardsfrom the trailer park and we were advised toevacuate.Well, Joe and Barrie had to rush and get all ofthe lights, water lines, sewer lines, telephonesand things disconnected, then get things mov-ed out. Three hours later everything was undercontrol and we could start moving things backinto the park again. You can imagine the surprise everyone had asthey started returning from the beach.
