I was always thinking that thoughts come in mind means what? At the same time I met some people who have psychosis. Then I realise psychosis is very dangerous thing and there is a lot of stigma in our society for that, for example when any per- son goes to psychiatric people think he is a gone case. Psychosis is a just biological disorder. We should look them with respect," says Dr Vidyadhar Bapat. Jotirgamay There are four aspects of psychological disorder. Nero, Bio, psycho and socio. Medicine is needed for the chemical changes of the brain. But it is very important to give them psychotherapy, that is give them confidence and create their existence in the society. "So initially I started to think what I can give them apart from medicine. I was working with the SAA (Schizophrenic Awareness Association). I felt that there should be an insti- tution for the minor psychological disorder and depressed people who are stressed. Hence, I start- ed 'Jotirgamay' as the extension of the SAA" he adds. Performing art as therapy "Performing art is a best therapy for the psychosis depression. I used it to channelise negative emo- tions. As I am from theatre, I know the strength of performing arts. When a human being is under psychosis there should be some creation of bliss for him. Art compels them to forget their sorrow for a while," says Dr Bapat. With a group of people under psychosis, they developed a programme named 'Antarnad' where there was poetry, songs and drama. Some people under tremendous depression couldn't speak in the beginning. Then they started to enjoy music and began to sing. "Initially we did small programmes. It gave us 90 per cent results, which was miraculous. Then we did many shows. Russian and American centres also called us to perform. People who can't speak a single word are now performing in front of 1000 people. It gave them confidence and many of them are singing professionally. For 'Antarnad' and success of this therapy, Dr Bapat got Trance Asian Chamber's International Pillar of Indian Society Award.
