The cover of this issue represents a new realization of CJE’s multitude of programs and services.

We always str ive for accuracy, but if you have any questions or concerns, call 773.508.1024.

Dear Readers:

On behalf of all my colleagues at CJE SeniorLife, I want to wish you a very happy and healthy holiday season. Whether you light a menorah, Christmas tree or kinara, this is the time of year to count one’s blessings. As CJE’s Development Director, I also want to thank all the generous do-nors—individuals, companies, and foundations—

that have made CJE an ongoing part of their philanthropic giving. This issue of LIFE honors YOU for supporting the worthwhile work of CJE SeniorLife. Not surprisingly, one of CJE’s six core values is “Accountability.” By definition, this value calls upon CJE to provide measurable quality care with clear fiscal and ethical responsibility.

Since joining CJE in 2006, I have been asked many times why I chose fundrais-ing as a career. While some people are uncomfortable asking for money, I have a different perspective. It gives me an opportunity to share CJE’s remarkable story… how it was founded by Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago in 1971 to serve the frail, Jewish elderly in Rogers Park. Since then, CJE has enhanced the lives of over 250,000 seniors through a comprehensive network of life enrichment programming, supportive resources, healthcare, research and education. Today, with the support of our donors, CJE makes magic for 19,000 seniors, family members and caregivers every year throughout metropolitan Chicago. That’s what makes coming to work so exciting for me! In my role at CJE, which I truly love, I encourage the “development” of relationships in or-der to create “tzedakah” (charity) which is an essential ingredient of Jewish life.

As CJE comes to the close of its 40th anniversary year, many things remain un-certain—the economy, government reimbursements, health care costs. What is certain is that we have amazing donors who believe in our mission and trust us to meet the needs of seniors in our community. Our donors can make a real difference in enriching the lives of older adults by giving to CJE SeniorLife.

As I said before, I am not shy about asking people to support this extraordinary organization. In turn, I ask you to consider these words that Anne Frank wrote in her famous diary almost 70 years ago, “How lovely to think that no one need wait a moment. We can start now, start slowly, changing the world!” And with your help, we mostly certainly can.

With gratitude and best wishes for a peaceful, joyful New Year.

We live out of town, can you still help us? A 92-year-old woman’s son and daughter both lived out of town and were unaware that she was becoming increasingly confused, living alone in her Lake Shore Drive apartment. They came in for the holidays only to discover a pile of important bills left unpaid and a lot of spoiled food in the refrigerator.

Your Eldercare Consultants sorted through the avalanche of papers in her apartment and will continue vis-iting monthly to pay her bills. They worked with her to choose a care-giver to help with grocery shopping, meal preparation and medication reminders. They also worked with her physician to arrange home health services including nursing visits and physical therapy.

I have questions about caring for an older loved one. Who can I turn to? Your Eldercare Consultants is the new name for our professional geriatric care management service that assists older adults and their families in managing quality of life and safety issues, as they face the many transitions and challenges that occur with aging.

How can Your Eldercare Consultants help? Your Eldercare Consultants can help find the right solutions to a variety of situations you or an older family member are facing.

Can you give me an example of a type of request that you receive? An attorney called with concerns about his parents. His 81-year-old father has cognitive problems and difficulty walking. His 80-year-old mother struggles

with chronic back pain and macular degeneration. The son was concerned about their safety, his mother’s driving and their ability to remain living at home.

How did you handle this complex situation? Your Eldercare Consultants developed a trusting relationship with the older couple, enabling them to discuss their concerns about driving and remaining in the home they loved. The care manager referred the father to a Parkinson’s disease specialist for proper diagnosis and medications, and then to the local senior center for enjoyable activities, thus providing the wife some time for herself. Your Eldercare Consultants arranged for alternative transportation options (enabling the mother to relinquish her car keys), for safety repairs to be completed on the house (including grab bars and handrails) and helped them find a part-time, in home, caregiver.

If you’ve ever thought about working behind-the-scenes or in the eye of the camera

as the host of a television show, one group of seniors in Highland Park proves that it’s never too late to start. CJE is always looking for innovative ways to engage with members of the community. This is one of them. How we came to work closely with a team of se-niors passionate about challeng-ing themselves through television production, coordinating with their fellow community members, and learning something new each month about CJE in the process is another story.

As an organization that values lifelong learning for older adults, building a relationship with a team of seniors affiliated with the Highland Park Senior Center to produce a television program through the Highland Park Public Access Center is a fitting col-laboration. CJE began working with the Highland Park Senior TV Production Team (known as Highland Park Senior Producers) in January 2012 to produce monthly half-hour programs. Each features a different program or ser-vice area, with our staff and Board members serving as guest experts in the field of aging.

The Producers (average age mid-70s) highlight CJE’s various pro-gram areas to viewers in the sur-rounding communities. Shows have covered Center for Healthy Living programs like Total Memory Workout, How to Use Your iPadTM, and Art in the Moment; our award-winning Culture BusTM pro-gram; nationally recognized topics in research, as well as health issues such as Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, and congestive heart failure.

“I learn more about all the di-rections CJE has gone with each show we produce. I’ve learned the different things that you do,

and the people who do the work. You’ve grown tremendously,” said Greta DeBofsky, a show host.

The show not only enables us to “broadcast” our healthy aging philosophy, it provides easily un-derstood educational information on wellness, making the show a truly powerful resource for view-ers in the community. “CJE’s program is one of the more in-formational shows we air that also provides viewers with a tool people are watching.” said Victor Walter, Highland Park Public Access Coordinator.

CJE has benefited from the ex-change as well. The process con-tinues to reinforce our indefati-gable drive to encourage older adults in the community to re-main active while also spread-ing the word about our available resources.

“The Senior Producers are pas-sionately driven. There are people out there of the same age who think their life is done

when it’s really not. They are proof that you can take part in something like our show for CJE and still learn new things,” said Walter. “There are even Senior Producers who are not as mobile, but they come in to do the work because they find personal value in it. They might not be able to move set pieces around, but they can control the audio board to take part in the process and make the show hap-pen. It does take a team effort to create the show, so this is a place where they can take on a role that is a meaningful despite any disability. It’s nice to know that they get satisfaction from it as well.”

Many fields, like business and medicine, use information technology

to improve efficiency and quality of services. A team of researchers in Chicago proposed that decision support technology could be easily applied to the complex issue of elder abuse. So they pioneered the development of a system that standardizes the way elder abuse is reported. Known as the Elder Abuse Decision Support System (EADSS), it is the first decision support system designed specifically for assessment and intervention in the field of elder abuse. It is designed to address elder abuse by translating research into practice with computerized, web-based standardized screening, assessment, reporting and care planning. It’s believed the system could be replicated nationally with very few adjustments, and many other states, and even other countries, are inquiring about it.

The three-stage project has been supported by three grants from the National Institute of Justice. Stage 1 began in 2006 with concept develop-ment of the measurements and system protocol and a field test at seven pro-vider agencies to validate measures. In

Stage 2, a prototype of the EADSS was developed with input from numer-ous elder abuse investigators, supervi-sors, and program managers locally and at the Illinois Department on Aging. Stage 3 is a wide scale demonstration test of the web-based EADSS.

The project team includes Kendon J. Conrad, Ph.D., Principal Investigator, and Madelyn (Micki) Iris, Ph.D., Co-Principal Investigator, and Jessica Mazza, Research Assistant.

The project evolved through a ser-endipitous encounter. Dr. Iris had been involved in evaluating one of the demonstration sites Illinois had funded to test models of its elder abuse program. She became very interested in protective services for older adults. Dr. Conrad special-ized in measurement theory and development, with a background in Gerontology. He had developed a money mismanagement measure for the seriously mentally ill. Dr. Conrad was displaying results of this research at a poster display session that Dr. Iris was attending, and they immediately saw how their work would complement each other’s. Thus began their collaboration.

The fact that elder abuse exists is a harsh reality of our society. In the most recent National Elder Abuse Incidence Study (2009), researchers who interviewed a randomized sample of almost 6,000 elderly respondents found that over 10% reported emotional, physical or sexual mistreatment or potential neglect during the previous year. According to Dr. Iris, “That number increases every year with the aging Baby Boomer population and more people choosing to age in their homes.” With cuts in critical services added to the mix, conditions are perfect for this problem to escalate. New methods of reporting and care planning are needed to manage the rise in elder abuse in a cost-efficient, knowledge-based way.

How does the decision support sys-tem work? Designed to detect physi-cal, emotional, sexual, or financial abuse or neglect, the EADSS uses a screening tool to assess suspected abuse. Staff or providers use web-based measures to interview alleged victims, family, friends, neighbors and alleged abusers. For example for fi-nancial abuse screening an interviewer asks such questions as: “During the

last 12 months, has ____ lied about how they were spending your money?” and “During the last 12 months, has _____ de-manded money from you?” The staff inputs re-sponses, they are recorded, and the web-based system generates a standardized assess-ment with qualitative and quantita-tive reports, including a written report with recommendations for interven-tions and care planning.

Drs. Conrad and Iris tackled this problem because the growing prob-lem of elder abuse had to be man-aged. As Conrad, the measurement expert, emphasizes, “If you can’t mea-sure it you can’t manage it.” However, measuring elder abuse posed prob-lems. The outcomes of assessments rested heavily upon the skill, knowl-edge and experience of the person doing the assessment. With high staff turnover, agencies often lost expe-rienced people, and novices had to perform the assessments. In a study at Michigan State (K. Taylor, et al), it was found that one of the barriers to reporting elder abuse was the lack of understanding about reporting pro-cedures. Up to now the quality of the assessments was always questionable.

This decision support system is highly significant because better as-sessment will help to improve care planning and programming de-signed to reduce and prevent elder abuse. Also, when many states use EADSS, prevalence studies and research reports will have larger and more representative samples. Besides, there are many benefits

to standard-ization: A lot of valuable time is spent on the assess-ment process. (Often, more than half of the time spent with the client is spent on as-sessment.) Also, through the system, some

order is brought to the process of intervention. Where there was pre-viously a disconnect between the stages of diagnosis and interven-tion, the system is able to help with recommending an intervention and building some connection between the two stages.

The project is unique in many ways. It not only measures the exis-tence of abuse, but also the sever-ity of abuse. In addition, it focuses

attention on the abuser and the dynamics of the relationship be-yond the abuse itself: The team has developed some measures com-ing from a strength-based applica-tion and dealing with the notion of family preservation (borrowed from child abuse models). “Because so many abusers are family mem-bers or care givers, there’s a value to maintaining and supporting that relationship and turning it in the right direction. This is much more preferable than getting rid of the abuser, because the victim will pos-sibly end up in a nursing home,” said Iris.

Thus, decisions made through elder abuse assessments can have seri-ous consequences. Fortunately, this project arms us with the proper tools for measuring and managing elder abuse to avoid unnecessary mistakes and missteps. Stay tuned for EADSS’ completion and how its use grows.

New methods of reporting and care planning are needed to manage the rise in elder abuse in a cost-efficient, knowledge-based way.

Rather, her primary goal was to “extend a helping hand to our fellow Jews.” And with a laugh, Mr. Sherman added that Diane would push him to open his wallet just a little bit wider. As a devoted husband, he always took her lead.

Mr. and Mrs. Sherman, together, have “walked the talk” evidenced by their commitment to tzedakah, helping to support Jews of all ages in Chicago, Israel and around the globe. With pride, Mr. Sherman notes that their most important legacy has been to pass on the special sense of giving to their two children, David Sherman and Mimi Sherman Timins, and eight grandchildren.

Mr. Sherman’s contribution to CJE, on behalf of his wife, will be used to develop programs and events that enrich the lives of se-niors in our community. We are most grateful to Mr. Sherman for this amazing gift, a loving testa-ment to Diane Sherman, who will be remembered forever as the quintessential volunteer, repairing the world with a big smile, a huge heart… and a bissel of soup.

her smile that spoke a thousand words—in any language—about how much she enjoyed “giving back” to those who needed a helping hand.

When Diane received the presti-gious Leonard Schanfield Award in 1994, CJE Board member Barbara Gilbert noted, “Diane Sherman shouldn’t be getting a crystal award today. She should be getting a 14-carat gold mixing spoon and diamond encrusted spatula. Diane Sherman likes to be behind the scenes, usually in the kitchen, qui-etly and cheerfully working and organizing. It’s what she loves.”

According to Mr. Sherman, his wife was not motivated by plaques, awards, accolades or committee appointments.

When Leonard Sherman is asked about his late wife

Diane, who passed away in 2011, his voice softens as he speaks of her endearing and far-reaching kind-ness during their 64 years of mar-riage. Their love for each other shines brightly throughout the conversation, but for the Shermans, their love for the Jewish people has also been a beacon of light. This year, to commemorate his wife’s heartfelt commitment to enhanc-ing the lives of the Jewish elderly, Mr. Sherman made a generous gift in perpetuity to CJE SeniorLife.

Diane Sherman (left) came from a family that knew the meaning of helping others. It was in her DNA. Like her father and moth-er, she began working with the elderly at BMZ—Jewish Home for the Aged, which merged with CJE in 1971. By 1979, Diane had earned CJE’s Outstanding Volunteer of the Year award for her loving assistance at CJE’s Shabbat Luncheon program and the annual community seder at Temple Emanuel, where she cooked and served warm meals to hundreds of Jews, many from the Former Soviet Union. After lunch, she devoted extra time teaching English to the Russian-speaking participants so they could better navigate American grocery stores. Diane was a tire-less, dedicated volunteer. At the Devon-Sheridan building, el-derly women packed into the community room to attend her cooking classes where she dem-onstrated simple, healthy recipes that could be easily prepared in a small apartment. For Diane, sharing the pleasure of food was an effortless way to break the lan-guage barrier. But it was mostly

Believe it or not, Judaism has four New Years. The New Year for Trees falls on the 15th day of the month of Shevat, usually ranging from mid-January to mid-February. For those of us who live in Chicago, it is still winter then. But in Israel, this is the start of the sap rising in the trees. Because it is easy to differentiate between last year’s growth and this year’s, this is a good time to notice new growth.

How do we celebrate Tu B’Shevat? Many synagogues and schools, and CJE, hold Tu B’Shevat Seders. We say blessings over four cups of wine (sound familiar?) and over four dif-ferent kinds of fruit—especially those like oranges, dates, figs and grapes, that are grown in Israel. We also in-clude stories, songs and poems that relate to the wonder of trees. We also celebrate the holiday by buying and planting trees in Israel.

Rabbi Michael J. Schorin
