    Noun clause are dependent clauses that performthe same functions as regular nouns. They canserve as subjects, objects, subject complementsand object complements.

    Three types of noun clauses:

    Notice!1. When that introduce a subject noun clause, it is never

    omitted.

    2. The fact that must be used in place of that in nounclauses that are objects of preposition.

    3. We use statement word order in embedded

    questions, not question word order.- Do not use do, does, or did in embedded questions.

    4. Do not use if to introduce a subject noun clause.

    Reporting verbs

    Reporting verb: a verb such as said, told, or asked,which introduces both direct and indirect speech. Itcan also come after the quotation in direct speech. - The mayor said, Ive read the report.- Ive read the report, the mayor said. (G-4)

    Indirect questions end with a period, not a questionmark. Do not use do, does or did in an indirectquestion.
