There Was Great Joy in That City Our first reading today from the Acts of the Apostles tells us that when Philip was preaching the Gospel and performing miracles in the name of Jesus, there was great joy in the city. We can only imagine how excited people were when they heard the Gospel and witnessed those miracles. Certainly, many were convinced that Jesus was the Son of God and wished to be Baptized immediately. We know many people were anxious to renounce their former way of life and embrace the new life of a Christian. We might ask ourselves today just how joyful we are when we focus on our faith in Jesus. If there is a lack of joy in our lives, perhaps we are not living fully as Jesus wants us to live. Perhaps we are looking for joy in all the wrong places. Sometimes people say that they need a miracle to believe. Some skeptics might say that it was easy for the people mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles to believe because they witnessed a miracle. Some might say that miracles do not occur anymore. They ask, “So why should one believe?” Most people do not witness grandiose miracles. Even in the Scriptures, it was not everyone who witnessed a miracle who came to believe in Jesus. Many people came to believe when they heard from someone else what Jesus or His disciples were doing. One of the greatest miracles of all is that we can believe without seeing (“Blessed are those who have not seen, yet believe” from John 20:29.) We are told there was great joy in the city, because the Gospel was being preached and wonderful signs were taking place. Yes, even today with all of the difficulties put upon us because of COVID-19, the Gospel is being preached and wonderful miracles are taking place: the birth of a human being, a person who is healed and allowed to rejoin his or her family, enemies becoming friends, family members growing closer because they are spending more time together. Our news media may not pick up on all of these things, but they occur nevertheless. Let us be joyful people. If we are not as joyful as we want to be, let us ask if we are truly listening to what Jesus is saying to us. Let us ask if we are being attentive to the modern day miracles occurring in our midst. Wonderful things do happen in our world, but we must look at everything with the eyes of faith and not with the eyes of doubt. Those people in Samaria finally received the Holy Spirit and their initiation into the Church was complete. May the Holy Spirit, which we have already received, allow us to experience the fullness of joy knowing that Jesus is in our midst! Father David
A Message from Fr. David Hankus Dear Parishioners, So many of us long for the opportunity to return to our churches and attend Mass in person. The Bishops of Illinois as well as the priests of the Joliet Diocese are working on how that can happen in the safest way possible. The rules and guidelines put forth for our state will certainly be followed and as soon as we are permitted and able to accommodate people safely we will do so. Let us continue to pray and ask our Lord to guide us during these difficult times. Please also know that you are remembered in my daily Masses and prayers. May God bless us all! Father David

We Offer Our Prayers
We Mourn the Passing of Parishioner & Ministry Center Volunteer Marie Kohler
On Saturday, May 9th, beloved parishioner and longtime Ministry Center volunteer Marie Kohler passed away at the age of 95. Marie was a bright light who could be found just about every weekday seated in the chairs at daily Mass. She was a prayer warrior, a faithful member of the daily Rosary group and a former CCW Woman of the Year.
Marie served regularly as a volunteer in the Ministry Center for over a decade. Throughout the years she worked in the front office, she cheerfully assisted with all of our parish mailings, answered phones and spread her love and joy to numerous visitors, many staff members and two pastors. She became a beloved adjunct member of our parish staff. In the picture above, she was celebrating her "retirement" at the age of 93.
Marie will be greatly missed by so many who came to know and love her. She had a gift of making every one of her friends feel as if they were her most favorite person in the world. Marie leaves behind her son John, daughter Stella, grandsons Jason (Marina), Adam, Ryan (Kelly), grand daughter Sarah (Benjamin), great granddaughter Alexandra and friends as countless as the stars. The family plans to celebrate Marie’s life at a Memorial Mass when we may gather in church again.
Eternal rest grant unto Marie, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Saints and Special Observances Sunday: Sixth Sunday of Easter Monday: St. John I Wednesday: St. Bernardine of Siena Thursday: St. Christopher Magallanes and Companions Friday: St. Rita of Cascia
Act of Spiritual Communion by Saint Alphonsus Ligouri:
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
St. Rita of Cascia (1381-1457) May 22
If you’re ever in Philadelphia on May 22, forget parking anywhere near Saint Rita’s shrine. Cars line streets and fill medians as throngs pack a candlelight vigil and six Masses, honoring this patroness of lost causes, hopeless situations, and—as her statue in countless churches built by twentieth-century immigrants testifies—difficult marriages, troubled homes, and alienated children. Wise people warn, be careful what you pray for. “Divine Savior,” Rita prayed, “let me suffer like you!” Obedient to parents who refused her wish to become a nun, Rita married a man who returned her devotion with twenty years of abuse. When enemies murdered him, Rita’s two sons swore revenge. Paintings depict her pointing the angry boys toward Christ crucified, whom she begged to restrain them. Within the year, both sons died. Alone now, Rita went to the convent but was refused. The nuns feared violence, since one of them was related to the murderer. Rita arranged peace between the families, made vows, and became much sought after as a counselor and intercessor for forty years on earth—and ever since in heaven.

First Prayer: O Mary, You shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the foot of the cross, were united with Jesus’ suffering, and persevered in your faith.
“Protectress of the Roman people”, you know our needs, and we know that you will provide, so that, as at Cana in Galilee, joy and celebration may return after this time of trial.
Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us. For he took upon himself our suffering, and burdened himself with our sorrows to bring us, through the cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.
We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God; Do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from every danger, O Glorious and Blessed Virgin.
Second Prayer: “We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God”.
In the present tragic situation, when the whole world is prey to suffering and anxiety, we fly to you, Mother of God and our Mother, and seek refuge under your protection.
Virgin Mary, turn your merciful eyes towards us amid this coronavirus pandemic. Comfort those who are distraught and mourn their loved ones who have died, and at times are buried in a way that grieves them deeply. Be close to those who are concerned for their loved ones who are sick and who, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, cannot be close to them. Fill with hope those who are troubled by the uncertainty of the future and the consequences for the economy and employment.
Mother of God and our Mother, pray for us to God, the Father of mercies, that this great suffering may end and that hope and peace may dawn anew. Plead with your divine Son, as you did at Cana, so that the families of the sick and the victims be comforted, and their hearts be opened to confidence and trust.
Protect those doctors, nurses, health workers and volunteers who are on the frontline of this emergency, and are risking their lives to save others. Support their heroic effort and grant them strength, generosity and continued health. Be close to those who assist the sick night and day, and to priests who, in their pastoral concern and fidelity to the Gospel, are trying to help and
support everyone.
Blessed Virgin, illumine the minds of men and women engaged in scientific research, that they may find effective solutions to overcome this virus.
Support national leaders, that with wisdom, solicitude and generosity they may come to the aid of those lacking the basic necessities of life and may devise social and economic solutions inspired by farsightedness and solidarity.
Mary Most Holy, stir our consciences, so that the enormous funds invested in developing and stockpiling arms will instead be spent on promoting effective research on how to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
Beloved Mother, help us realize that we are all members of one great family and to recognize the bond that unites us, so that, in a spirit of fraternity and solidarity, we can help to alleviate countless situations of poverty and need. Make us strong in faith, persevering in service, constant in prayer.
Mary, Consolation of the afflicted, embrace all your children in distress and pray that God will stretch out his all-powerful hand and free us from this terrible pandemic, so that life can serenely resume its normal course.
To you, who shine on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope, do we entrust ourselves, O Clement, O Loving, O Sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.
