Mr. Glymonopoulos was a Greek personality and a

highly viewed member of the civic council of

Alexandria. Glym was famous for the Kaymac Ice-cream in the 1950/1960’s

Mr. Genaclis was the owner of great vineyards, he also owned

the famous “Genaclis” distilleries. This area was known to produce famous

wines during the Romains rule of Alexandria.

Kom el Shaafa:

The name comes from “broken parts of clay” due to the fact that

piles of clay were found in this area. The old city of “Rhakotis ”

was destroyed by an earth-quake before Alexander the great established Alexandria

over the ruins.

La désignation vient de mot brisures d’argile due a la haute

concentration d’argile casse trouvé dans la région. Alexandre le grand bâti la nouvelle ville d’Alexandrie

sur le ruine de la vielle ville de “Rhakotis” détruite par un

This white sand area famous for figs was named after the sheikh “Mohamed

El-Agamy” a holly and pious man.

Originally a series of little Islands were in this area,

later a Chain was installed to stop people from reaching the Islands.

The name derives from Lake “Mareotis”, the name of the lake in this area as it

used to be known in ancient times.

Another interpretation says the name derives from the

Joseph Smouha a Jewish Iraqi trader and

entrepreneur, worked in 1924 on drying the

HADARA Lake known at the time as Saliére Ragab

Pasha.

entrepreneur juif d’Iraq prend le projet en 1924 d’assainir le lac HADARA connu sous le nom les Saliére Ragab Pasha.

Glymonopoulos / St-Stefano

San-Stefano:

The Tramway Co. gave this name to commemorate the

defeat of Turkey by the Serbs with the help of Russia in 1874 in the battle of San-Stefano - A huge hotel was erected at the time. Rebuild in 2007 into a giant Mall/Hotel complex.

San-Stefano:

La compagnie des Tramway donne le nom San Stefano a la région pour

commémorer la défaite de la Turquie par les Serbes avec l’aide

des Russe en 1874 lors de la bataille de San-Stefano – Un hôtel

de luxe est bâtis lors a cette endroit. En 2007 un énorme

complexe (Mall/Hôtel) remplace l’hôtel.

The name comes from the Arabic term “Al-Makous” or Customs since it was the area where merchandises

used to arrive.

El-Max:

Le nom diminutif de El-Max provient du terme Arabe

“Al-Makous” terme voulant dire douanes, car la région

reçoit les marchandises provenant de l’étranger.

Laurent:

Monsieur Laurent was the owner of a famous

cigarette factory in the 19 century, his huge villa has been transformed lately

into a school.

Laurent:

Monsieur Laurent, un industriel propriétaire d’une grande

manufacture de cigarette dans les années 1900, donne son

nom au quartier.

Son immense villa vas être transformé plus tard en école.

Saba-Pasha:

Saba Pasha was the director of the Egyptian postal system and later

became minister of finance.

Saba-Pasha:

Saba Pacha est nul autre que le directeur des postes Égyptiennes qui devient par

la suite ministre des finances.

Bulkeley, Fleming & Shultz:

Were all founding members of the El-Raml (the sands) Tramway system to serve then an unpopulated area

close to downtown Alexandria.

sables, un nouveau système de communication qui va

desservir un endroit peu peuplé dans la région proche

relatively new location, that will became later known as

Victoria:

The “Victoria college” that was originally built in 1901

in Lazarita, it was later moved to the present

location during the reign of Queen Victoria in 1904.

avec des nouvelles bâtisses durant le règne de la Reine

A peninsula famous then for Figs thus “Ras et-Tin”

(Cape of Figs).

The Name is a deformation of the English word

“WARD” to designate the storage area of the

customs.

Lazarita:

A derivative from the Italian words Lazar (Lazarus

resuscitated from the dead..!) It is there that the Quarantine for travelers coming from the east was established.

Ce nom provient d’une déformation du mot Italien Lazaros

(Lazare qui est ressuscité des morts….!)

C’est a cet endroit que fut établie une Quarantaine pour accueillir les

voyageurs arrivant de l’est.

Aboukir

Aboukir:

Is the name of the priest and the Martyr “Cyrus” born in

Alexandria at the end of Emperor Diocletian era.

The Pharaonic name of the city was “Kanoub” that became

“Kanoubis” during the Ptolemy reign.

Aboukir:

Abou Kir est le nom Arabe du prêtre et martyre “Cyrus” né a Alexandrie

a la fin du règne de l’Empereur Dioclétien.

Du temps des Pharaons le nom de la ville était “Kanoub” puis se

transforma en “Kanoubis” durant le règne Ptolémée.
