n. 1 "CLIL refers to situations where subjects, or parts of subjects, are taught through a foreign language with dual-focused aims, namely the learning of content, and the simultaneous learning of a foreign language". (Marsh, D. 2002. Content and Language Integrated Learning: The European Dimension - Actions, Trends and Foresight Potential).

Three NEW models 1. Content and Language Integrated Learning 2. English as Lingua Franca (ELF) 3. English for Young Learners (EYL) ... CLIL has emerged as a significant curriculum trend in Europe. Similar approaches are now used, under different names, in many other countries.

CLIL involves teaching a curricular subject through the medium of a language other than that normally used. The subject can be entirely unrelated to language learning, such as history lessons being taught in English in a school in Spain. CLIL is taking place and has been found to be effective in all sectors of education from primary through to adult and higher education. Its success has been growing over the past 10 years and continues to do so.

Teachers working with CLIL are specialists in their own discipline rather than traditional language teachers. They are usually fluent speakers of the target language, bilingual or native speakers. In many institutions language teachers work in partnership with other departments to offer CLIL in various subjects.

The key issue is that the learner is gaining new knowledge about the 'non-language' subject while encountering, using and learning the foreign language. The methodologies and approaches used are often linked to the subject area with the content leading the activities. Gisella Langé 2016

Question n. 2

‘The supply of (CLIL) teachers, the

quality of their teaching and of teacher

education are crucial in meeting the

demands and challenges of a rapidly

changing society’.

(Coyle, Luxembourg Presidency CLIL Conference, 2005)

In Italy teachers of other subjects • know what the CEFR is

• show great interest in the way levels and competences are defined in it

• are willing to improve or learn a Foreign Language

• are trying to describe and grade competences for their subjects…

CLIL/EMILE training activities favour awareness and cooperative work on language learning…

CLIL as quality change agent

Gisella Langé 2016

CLIL/EMILE is a change agent in education since it enables integration in the curriculum and benefits cross-section and cross-curricular dialogue, thus offering an example of innovative teaching

Gisella Langé 2016

CLIL methodology requires interactions between the FL and the Subject teachers. That's why in Italy we are suggesting schools to build CLIL TEAMS...
