Climate Informed Monitoring Discussion
Do you feel that you have an understanding of the potential ecological implications of climate change at
your installation? Which threats do you have a good handle on?What do you need more information about?
• Uncertainty; Storm water, water availability & quality (TX)
Climate Informed Monitoring Discussion
Have you tailored your management objectives in your INRMP to incorporate climate change threats?
If not, what specific objectives would you start with? • Mobility of species/ dispersal, corridors, shifting distributions &
phenologies resulting from variable physiological tolerances, sensitivities• Species interactions; mismatch? • Loss of priority species• How does climate change affect our objectives? • Sea level rise (particularly in FL) combined with an extreme event
(hurricane)• Potential for seed banking?• What are the low hanging fruit?• But recognize that we can take this process more slowly, thoughtfully
Climate Informed Monitoring Discussion
Are there existing monitoring efforts at your installation that could be easily modified into a CIM approach?
Climate Informed Monitoring Discussion
What new monitoring initiatives might be needed to track the effects of climate change threats and inform
adaptive management?
Climate Informed Monitoring Discussion
Do you think there is value in using CIM on your installation to optimize climate change adaptation to
achieve your management objectives?•Yes, sea wall/barrier development (e.g. AK)•Yes, if we’re not monitoring impacts, we may be wasting limited resources; need for reprioritization•What are the decision pts; thresholds•Reassessing restoration; watching for new species, novel assemblages •Start at coarse level instead of trying to make fine level predictions•Role of invasive exotic species in the system; Re-think how we approach, especially since a lot of resources used for removal…(think SWFC in riparian areas of the southwest)
