Clinical Research Informatics [CRI]
Informatics, defined generally as the intersection of information and computer science with a health-related discipline, has a foundation drawn from many well-established, theory-based disciplines, including computer science, library and information science, cognitive science, psychology, and sociology.
Clinical Research
Clinical Research
• Clinical research is about finding the best way for patients to receive medical care.
• The NIH defines clinical research in three parts:– 1) patient-oriented (research involving interaction
with human subjects), – 2) epidemiologic and behavioural, and – 3) outcomes and health services research.
epidemiology :science that studies the patterns, causes, and effects of health and disease conditions in defined populations
Clinical Research
• Clinical research is a branch of medical science that determines the safety and effectiveness of:– medications, – devices, – diagnostic products and – treatment regimens intended for human use.
Clinical Research
• These may be used for:– prevention, – treatment, –diagnosis or – for relieving symptoms of a disease.
CRI scientists conceive of innovative solutions that span biological, clinical, and population-based research.
Clinical Research Informatics
Clinical Research Informatics [CRI]
• Clinical research informatics (CRI) is the application of informatics principles and techniques to
–support the spectrum of activities and processes incorporated in clinical research.
Clinical Research Informatics [CRI]
CRI is the sub-domain of biomedical informatics concerned with the :–development, –application, and –evaluation of
• theories, methods, and systems
Clinical Research Informatics [CRI]
CRI Aims to OPTIMIZE [?] :
the design and conduct of clinical research and the analysis,
Its interpretation, and dissemination of the information
generated.
Clinical Research Informatics
• CRI focuses on: –the application of informatics to the
discovery and management of
–new knowledge relating to health and disease.
Clinical Research Informatics
• It includes management of information related to –clinical trials, and –also involves informatics related to
secondary use of clinical data.
Clinical Research Informatics [CRI]
• It contributes to the ongoing dialogues among researchers and practitioners in CRI as they continue to rise to the challenges of a dynamic and evolving clinical research environment.
Clinical Research Informatics [CRI]
• practice standards, • improved safety and efficiencies , • data standards, • policy issues, • educational standards and • instructional resources.
Clinical Research Informatics
CRI • "...focuses on developing new informatics
theories, tools, and solutions to accelerate the full translational continuum: – basic research to clinical trials, – clinical trials to academic health center practice,– diffusion and implementation to community
practice, and 'real world' outcomes"
Development
Clinical Research Informatics
• CRI is rapidly evolving and growing, in part due to increasingly complex clinical research workflow and information management challenges.
• The rapid pace of biomedical science and the need for advances in medicine, which create pressure for clinical research to be conducted in a timely and efficient manner and also produce high-quality results
Underlying reasons for this evolution and growth include:
Clinical Research Informatics
• The rapid pace of biomedical science• the need for advances in medicine,• pressure for clinical research to be
conducted– in a timely and efficient manner and
also –produce high-quality results
Clinical Research Informatics
• The use of sophisticated biomedical research techniques that generate massive and ever-growing data sets (aka Big Data)• Big Data: large and/or complex data
sets.
Clinical Research Informatics
• There is a need for computer programs and other tools that can evaluate, combine, and visualize these large quantities of data not only on supercomputers, but also on PCs and workstations
