Greetings fellow members of our wonderful club!

It seems as if I am congratulating the management, staff and members on some awards or achievements in every issue and this issue is no exception. Well done once again to the KPGCC team on garnering two more prestigious awards, for the 2nd Best Course in Malaysia 2011 in the Asian Golf Monthly Awards and as one of the Gold Winners for the HAPA Course of the Year – Best 5 in Asia category.

I am sure that most of you have seen the ballroom after the

extensive upgrading exercise. The ballroom is now one of the best among all golf clubs in the country and this is something we can be proud of. I appeal to all members to adhere to the ‘No Smoking’ rule and also to abide by the dress code of long pants and shoes, whilst inside the ballroom, no slippers and shorts, please! The ballroom is classy and we should dress with some class as well.

With such superb facility now at our disposal, I encourage all members to hold their corporate seminars and other functions at KPGCC. Our banquet team is always ready to serve you and help make your event a memorable success.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the winners of the junior championship, which took place on December 15. Well done to the boys’ champion, Derrick Tiu and the girls’ champion, Jolene Kam. We certainly have some great junior talent at KPGCC and I look forward to seeing more of our young golfers actively taking part in competitions.

The KPGCC Family Carnival on December 11 was a great success and I trust all of you and your families had an enjoyable day. Thank you all for taking part and for attending the Gala Dinner. It was really nice to see such a good turnout.

Finally, I wish everyone a wonderful 2012 and a prosperous Year of the Dragon!

As we move into 2012, it is always nice to look back on the year that has just passed. Certainly 2011 was another memorable year for KPGCC, highlighted by the staging of the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters and many awards for our beloved club.

Our course was recognised as the 2nd Best Golf Course in Malaysia 2011 during the Asian Golf Monthly Awards in Pattaya, based on votes by a 24-strong panel and online votes. We were also ranked as the 4th Best Maintained Course and as the 10th Best Clubhouse in the Asia Pacific region.

During the 10th Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards (HAPA) 2011-2013 Regional Series in Singapore, KPGCC was announced as one of the Gold Winners for the HAPA Course Of The Year – Best 5 In Asia category. We were also rated by StarGolf as having the Best Course, Best Greens and Best Golf Operations in Malaysia.

It’s indeed a great honour for the club to receive these internationally-renowned awards, which come at no small effort. The dedication and hard work of the staff of KPGCC, as well as the commitment and cooperation of members, are all contributory factors that continue to add to the number of awards and accolades that KPGCC has garnered over the years.

As it is our philosophy to strive for continuous improvement, we will be focusing on course improvements in the year 2012. The areas we will be working on include drainage improvements, on the fairways and green aprons; enlargement and resurfacing of teeboxes; reconstruction of old bunkers, and landscaping enhancement.

As most of you know, the ballroom renovation has been completed and now it has a new, elegant and classy look. I hope members will make use of the ballroom for their functions, whether corporate or social.

I would like to congratulate our junior golfers, Raeysha and Jolene Kam, for their excellent achievements in SportExcel National Junior Circuit events recently. They have certainly done us proud and I wish both of them all the best and hope they will continue to produce excellent results in year 2012.

Please have a look at the pull-out calendar for the 2012 golf, sports and social activities that comes with this issue of Oasis Permai. This will help you plan your schedule in advance and ensure that you do not miss any of the activities planned for you this year.

Lastly, as the Lunar Year of the Dragon approaches, I wish all Chinese members ‘Gong Xi Fa Cai’!

Jolene Shines For Kota Permai

Kota Permai GCC junior Jolene Kam did the club proud when she won the Girls’ Under-15 title in the AmBank Cross Creek SportExcel Malaysian Junior Grand Finals held at Kelab Rahman Putra Malaysia on December 13-14, 2011. The 15-year-old golfer carded scores of 87 and 77 to take the title.

This was Jolene’s second title on the SportExcel National Junior Circuit in late 2011, following her win in the Girls’ Under-15 category of the fourth leg at Monterez

Golf & Country Club on November 10-11. Jolene posted scores of 75 and 82 for a total of 157 to win convincingly by nine strokes from Ching Yong of Kluang Country Club.

Another Kota Permai GCC junior who has been in great form of late is 13-year-old Raeysha, who chalked up two impressive performances in October 2011.

Raeysha finished second in the fifth leg of the SportExcel Premier-Elite Golf Circuit at the Monterez Golf & Country Club on October 21, shooting nine-over-par 80 on the par 71 layout to lose out to winner Sarfina Seretharan of Bukit Jalil Golf & Country Club by merely two shots.

In the prestigious sixth Faldo Series Malaysia which ended just a day earlier at the Royal Selangor Golf Club, Raeysha achieved her target of carding rounds of below 85. She shot 81, 84 and 82 for a three-day total of 247 to take eighth place in the Under-16 category.

Derrick Tiu and Jolene Kam Jo Ling won the Boys’ and Girls’ titles respectively in the club’s inaugural Junior Championship held on December 16.

Derrick shot a gross score of 83 to emerge as the best among the boys, while Jolene was in superb form as she shot an excellent 74 to top the girls. The duo thus earned spots in next year’s Club Championship where they will vie for honours with the club’s top adult golfers.

The tournament saw a total of 13 juniors aged 19 and below participating.

ISKANDAR JOHOR OPEN (IJO)

Joost Luiten became the fourth Dutch golfer to win on the European Tour with a hard-fought victory in the rain-shortened Iskandar Johor Open, played at the Horizon Hills Golf & Country Club in Nusajaya, Johor, on November 17-20.

The 25-year-old golfer carded rounds of 63, 70 and 65 for a total of 15-under-par 198 in the US$2 million tournament, which was shortened to 54 holes due to numerous weather suspensions. Luiten held his nerve admirably on an exciting final day to claim his maiden European Tour title by one shot from second round leader Daniel Chopra of Sweden.

“Well, it is always tough to get your first Tour win and you’ll always believe that you’ll get a good one. I’ve come close a few times and I’m really relieved to finally win and look forward for the next one,” said Luiten, who won US$333,330 for his win in the fifth edition of the tournament, jointly-sanctioned by the European Tour and Asian Tour for the first time.

“I knew at the beginning of the week that it will be a rainy season here, so it didn’t really bother me. You just need to relax when the delay comes and accept it. You can’t let it get to you or it will affect your round,” added the Dutchman, who wears two gloves for a better grip.

Chopra needed to hole a 20-foot eagle putt on the par five closing hole to force a playoff but missed on the high side, settling for birdie and sole possession of second place on 14-under-par after a closing 70. His title hopes looked to have faded after a double bogey on seven but the two-time PGA Tour winner battled back with three birdies in his last six holes.

“I had a bad break there (on hole 7) but I knew it was a

long way to go and if I could get some birdies, I would still have a chance to win. I just tried to stay patient,” said Chopra, who grew up in India.

“It is a great way to finish the year. It has been a long year and it is nice to have this good finish at the end of the year. It gives you some encouragement for the next year,” added the Swede.

2010 champion Padraig Harrington could also have forced extra holes by making three at 18, but the popular Irishman sent his second shot into thick grass just beside the lake that borders the green. He left his chip well short and could only manage par, sharing third place on 13-under with Welshman Rhys Davies, who finished with an excellent 65, and England’s James Morrison.

Thai icon Thongchai Jaidee, Charlie Wi of Korea, Shiv Kapur of India and Bangladeshi Siddikur ended their campaigns as the top Asians in joint 15th place. Not a single one of the 10 Malaysians in the field made the second round cut, which came at two-under-par.

ASIAN GOLF MONTHLY & HAPA AWARDS/GOLF CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

More Accolades for Kota Permai

KPGCC’s dedication to excellence was recognised late last year when the club received a host of prestigious awards of international stature.

During the Asia Pacific Golf Summit in Pattaya on October 31, KPGCC was announced the winner of the 2nd Best Golf Course in Malaysia in the Asian Golf Monthly Awards 2011. KPGCC was also rated as the 4th Best Maintained Course in Asia Pacific and our clubhouse was ranked the 10th Best Clubhouse in the region.

Held at the Pattaya Exhibition & Convention Hall (PEACH), the summit saw leading figures from the golf industry worldwide converge for three days of informative talks and round table discussions by renowned speakers and panellists. KPGCC general manager Tang Meng Loon was on the panel for one

of the round table discussions, titled ‘Growing The Golf Game At Your Golf Course’.

Another award soon followed during the 10th Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards (HAPA) 2011-2013 Regional Series, held at the Mandarin Orchard Singapore on November 18. KPGCC was named as one of the Gold Winners for the HAPA Course Of The Year – Best 5 In Asia category. Additionally, KPGCC was also rated as having the Best Course, Best Greens and Best Golf Operations in Malaysia by StarGolf.

“It is indeed an honour for KPGCC to receive these internationally-renowned awards,” noted Tang. “These awards are the result of the collaborative efforts of the management, staff and members of the club and I wish to congratulate each and every one involved in making KPGCC what it is today.”

GOLF COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN'S

MESSAGEHappy New Year to all! Welcome to 2012 and may the Year of the Dragon brings plenty of good fortune, good health and good scores to everyone.

We look forward to another year of continued support from members and commitment from the management for the betterment of the club.

Despite the recent heavy rain, our course is still playable and is in much better condition compared to other courses. Nevertheless, there are some areas which are soggy and these have been identified by the management for drainage improvement. Please be patient as the soggy conditions also impede maintenance and improvement work using heavy machinery, which have to be carefully

done to prevent unnecessary damage to the course. The game of golf has brought us members together

irrespective of race and religion. Mutual respect for one another must prevail at all times. With this comes understanding, cooperation, success and happiness. We have had a wonderful relationship so let us ride on our success and continue to build a stronger club.

My New Year message to our beginners is to persevere and practice diligently. Stay patient and composed and keep hitting the fairways and greens. To our seasoned players, may you continue to enjoy the game and, in the process, make improvements to your golf and personal life.

HAPPY GOLFING!

FAMILY CARNIvAL

There’s nothing like spending time with the entire family, and when you throw KPGCC’s Family Carnival in the equation, you get a rollicking outing that’s a whole load of fun!

Throngs of both members and guests, along with their families, turned up as early as 8am for the club’s Family Carnival held on Sunday, 11 December 2011. A variety of fun activities was lined up for kids and adults, including archery, tele-matches, caricature and face painting as well as magic shows. There was also petting zoo and pony rides, which simply thrilled the little ones.

A little before noon, committee members together with club general manager Tang Meng Loon and senior club manager Sharudin officiated the Family Carnival. And the good times continued with exciting games, kids’ performances and an art competition. For those who needed to satiate their hunger pangs, Kenny Rogers, Starbucks and hotdog vans were ready to whip up takeaways on

the spot! Booths were set up around the

club, selling toys, children’s clothing, ladies accessories, sports equipment and etc. Discounted items at the MST proshop was a hit with bargain hunters who took advantage of the items on sale.

After sunset, about 250 members and guests filled the brand new Kota Permai ballroom for the Dinner & Dance. Kota Permai directors Dato’ Goon Heng Wah and Mr KC Goh were among the VVIPs at the dinner. The night was made lively by the entertaining emcee, fantastic live band performances and games – and of course, the lucky draw, which saw Mr. Albert Loh winning the grand prize, a gym bicycle sponsored by Trendmasters. Other lucky draws included a home theatre system, DVD player and GPS device. It was, all in all, a wonderful night filled with great food, music, dances and laughter.

Rollicking good time!

In keeping with the ‘giving’ spirit of the Festival of Lights, a 20-strong contingent from KPGCC, Jade Hills Resort Club and Botanic Resort Club paid a visit to the Anbesivam Home in Klang last October.

Established in 2005, the home is located in Taman Sri Andalas, Klang and houses a total of 58 special people ranging in age from as young as three to as old as 90. The home’s residents include Down Syndrome patients, Cerebral Palsy patients, blind and

deaf persons, Autistic persons, orphans and single mothers. Most of them were Hindus of Indian origin, which made it appropriate to tie-in the visit with the Deepavali celebrations.

In addition to providing groceries to the home based on their wish-list, the joint contingent comprising management staff and committee members also made cash contributions. The home is a non-governmental organisation

and thus relies solely on donations by well-wishers to meet its monthly expenses of around RM11,000.

KPGCC also provided lunch for the home’s residents, and cakes to celebrate the birthdays of three children who were born in October. A dance competition was also organised, with ‘angpaus’ and hampers presented to the best three dance groups.

“The visit was certainly a fulfilling experience. It enabled us to bring joy to those who are less fortunate as well as to appreciate what we have in life,” said KPGCC general manager Tang Meng Loon. “As a caring and socially responsible club, we will certainly be organising more charitable activities in the future.”

I am very sure that all members are aware that KPGCC is getting more popular and memberships are increasing. The increase is putting extreme pressure on the available facilities, so much so that the frequency and number of complaints from members are continuing to rise. We have to

understand that due to land and space constraints, it is extremely difficult to further extend the clubhouse. However, we believe that the Management has a duty and responsibility to do all that is practically possible to ensure that all members’ concerns are taken into consideration seriously.

The Permai Ballroom had recently undergone a major renovation and also boasts new interior fittings. Even the toilets now have a refreshing new look. I understand that the next improvement exercise is to upgrade the changing/shower rooms and also to construct new half-way huts on the golf course. All these improvements will in some way lead to the enhanced comfort and well-being of all members.

The standard and prestige of every sports or social club is very dependent upon both the Management and all the members. In this aspect, from my experience and feedback from fellow members, I can confidently say that the co-operation and understanding between the Management and members of KPGCC are tremendously good. As we enter another year, it is my sincere hope that this close relationship and mutual respect will extend to all of us.

Let us all continue to work together to make KPGCC a club which we can all say that we are proud to be members of!

Here’s some great news for KPGCC members who plan a holiday to Bali, Indonesia! The club has signed a reciprocal agreement with the spectacular ocean-fronting New Kuta Golf Resort, venue of the 2008 Indonesia Open.

Crafted by the renowned American design firm Golfplan, the New Kuta layout features some memorable oceanside holes on its back nine with strong wind coming into play. While it is hard to pick a

signature hole, the par three 15th stands out with its stunning setting on top of a white limestone cliff, overlooking the blue waters of the Indian Ocean.

The front nine of the New Kuta course runs inland through hilly terrain, presenting a completely different but equally enjoyable experience.

The award-winning New Kuta Golf Resort is conveniently located just 20 minutes’ drive from the Ngahrurai International Airport.

A Happy and Blessed New Year to all!

As we begin our golfing year in 2012, it is important to note some revisions made to the Rules of Golf which take effect worldwide from 1st January 2012. The good news is that this edition of the four-yearly revision has very few changes, with the majority of the amendments aimed at improving the clarity of the Rules.

The following are a few of the main amendments that are most likely to affect us.

1. Definition of Addressing the BallAt present, a player has addressed his ball when he has taken his stance and grounded his club. Under the revised Definition, a player has addressed his ball as soon as he grounds his club, whether in front of the ball or behind it regardless of whether or not he has taken his stance. Consequently, a player will no longer address his ball in a bunker or a water hazard since grounding of a club is not permitted under the Rules.

2. Rule 6-3a. Time of StartingRule 6-3a is amended to provide that the penalty for starting late, but within

five minutes of the starting time, is reduced from disqualification to loss of the first hole in match play or two strokes at the first hole in stroke play.

Under the existing Rules, a player who arrives even 15 seconds later than their starting time should be disqualified from a competition, unless the Committee has introduced a penalty reduction as a condition of competition. The revised Rule

dispenses with the need for such a condition of competition.

3. Rule 13-4. Ball in Hazard; Prohibited ActionsException 2 to Rule 13-4 is amended to allow player to smooth sand or soil in a hazard at any time, including before playing from that hazard, provided it is done for the sole purpose of caring for the course and

nothing is done to improve the position or lie of his ball, the area of his intended stance or swing, or his line of play.

4. Rule 18-2b. Ball Moving After Address

A new exception is added that exonerates the player from penalty if his ball moves after it has been addressed (remember the new definition of address) when it is known or virtually certain that he did not cause the ball to move. For example, if it is a gust of wind that moves the ball after it has been addressed, there is no penalty and the ball is played from its new position.

Wishing you an exciting golfing year in 2012!

CHRISTMAS CHEER

Club members and guests alike had a very merry surprise on Christmas Day, 25th December, when Santa Claus came to ‘town’ with a bevy of lovely Santarinas. In perfect costumes, Santa and his helpers gave away 300 packs of goodies in a specially decorated VIP buggy, delighting one and all.

Santa even ‘jingled bells’ after golfers made putts or teed off. The social and recreational members at the Sports facilities were also thrilled to experience the joyous Christmas spirit, and grabbed the opportunity to snap photos with the ‘big, bearded man from North Pole’ as well as the charming Santarinas. A first for the club, the effort in conjunction with Christmas gained excellent feedback from members.

NEW BALLROOM/TEE TALK

Method

Once you have obtained a proper posture

in your set-up, stay concentrated on your

right knee. Take your back swing without

moving your knee cap at all. When turning

the left side (shoulder, hip and leg) to the

back, the head should be kept steady.

You will feel tension on the inner side of

your right leg from your inner knee to your

inner thigh, created by resisting the activity

of the left side. You have now loaded your

right side. Your left side should now move

very slightly towards the target and rotate

anti-clock wise to pull this developed

loaded right side through impact to the

follow through and finish.

TEE TALK KENNY REuTENS with

stable object and turn left side as much as possible

(as shown in photo above).

Weight transfer is a factor in hitting the ball a longer way. Done properly, the big muscles take over and transfer energy to shoulders and hands.

After months of closure for renovation and refurbishment works, we’re delighted to present to you KPGCC’s gorgeously revamped ballroom! With a seating capacity of 300 pax, the ballroom is an ideal choice of venue for all kind of functions. We

hope that you will choose to hold your social, or corporate events at our elegant ballroom. For enquiries and quotations, drop us an email at [email protected], or call 03-5122 3700 ext. 120/121/122.
