PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
On Wednesday evening our program was the launch of the club’s strategic plan, however, since that activity was carried out last month by DG Merv Ericson, a special stand-in speaker was arranged. In a deft piece of sleight of hand, Rotarian Greg King changed hats and addressed the club on the topic of community radio and the club’s long term and current involvement with 96.5 Inner FM. Greg’s full report is below. During the last week the Fine Design Market was held and the club raised $506.00 for the day. Well done to Barry Halpern and his team and the volunteers who assist at the market and make the fundraising possible. The Achievement Team members conducted their de-brief and review session on Sunday. I look forward to hearing the outcomes of that activity. A new leadership group is taking the helm next year so we are likely to see some program refreshment.
Monday evening was the first instalment of the Journey Into The Human Brain. This event received “rave” reviews from those who attended. It’s not too late to register for the two remaining, stand-alone sessions of the series. See information

below. Thursday (tonight as I write this) is the grand finale of the Manningham Business Excellence Awards. This is a cluster project supported by all four clubs in the City. Our club has contributed some significant person-power and, as part of the Business of the Year winner’s package, a place at next year’s Achievement program. Next week is a Youth Services night at the club and Team Leader Selwyn has lined up an exciting program. As part of the evening a
“special effort” raffle will be conducted to assist the Doncaster Secondary School Interact Club with their fundraising for their East Timor Orphanage project. Also as a fund-raiser, the Interact club is
holding a cinema event on Sunday 24th November at 2.30pm at the Palace Cinema in Balwyn. The feature film is The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Tickets are $20 including a raffle ticket. Rotarians interested to attend should contact Jade on 0402 097 442. Our guests this week were Maria Rigoni (guest of Stephany Hutt) and Peter Buszco (guest of Roy Marshall). Both of these people have expressed interest in joining our club. Finally, all members please try to assist Wayne, Barry and the Community Services Team with The Pines Christmas Market on Sunday 1st December. This event will be one of our major fund-raisers for the year and it calls for “all hands on deck” if not (to stretch the metaphor) “general quarters”. Please volunteer to help when asked to do so.
Kind Regards Greg Hutt

GUEST SPEAKER – Greg King
About InnerFM
As well as his wife Alma, his publishing business, the Carlton Football Club, and, of course, The Rotary Club of Doncaster, club member, Greg King, has another passion with his involvement with our local community radio station 96.5 InnerFM. Greg is one of the hosts of the “Rotary in Action” program broadcast for an hour at 4pm every Tuesday, every week of the year. He also has his own breakfast show, “A Greg’s Breakfast!”, that goes to air for three hours every third and fifth Tuesday, is a committee of management member of the station and regularly volunteers in other capacities. The following is an edited portion of his presentation to The Rotary Club of Doncaster on Wednesday, November 13:
“3INR (96.5 InnerFM) commenced full time broadcasting on December 10, 1990, and since then it has emerged with its own unique personality and sound. “The 96.5 InnerFM studios are located in the Warringal Shopping Centre, Heidelberg, with the station’s transmitter mounted on the roof of the Austin Hospital boiler room. “The Community Broadcasting community in Australia consists of more than 300 independent, non-profit broadcasting outlets like ours. “InnerFM serves the cities of Banyule, Manningham and Darebin. However, our programs are heard across a much wider geographic area, with a listening catchment in excess
of a quarter million people in those three municipalities. “Our station format, although very broad, is generally a mixture of magazine style segments and music appealing to all tastes and age groups. We have many special interest programs including ethnic and multicultural, community, legal, readings & writings, wine appreciation, spiritual, jazz and classical music. “We are obliged, under licence, to include a 25 per cent Australian music content in all our programming. In fact, as reported in the Survey that I’ll talk about later, 37 per cent of all music on Community Radio is Australian. “As part of our programming charter, 96.5 InnerFM enjoys great success with outside broadcasts. These include the annual Ivanhoe Boulevard Christmas Lights and the Banyule Festival Parade in Burgundy Street. “We broadcast Premier Section VAFA amateur football every Saturday in season. A dedicated group travels to footy grounds all over Melbourne. They setup broadcast facilities (sometimes in the open air and in all weather) and then have the passion to create the on-air excitement and atmosphere only volunteer callers can bring to the airwaves. “We have over 120 such volunteers involved in the operation of the station. In preparing this presentation I counted 81 different presenters that are on air in any given week. “The running of 96.5 InnerFM is coordinated by a Committee of Management and the revenue for the station comes from three sources: sponsorship, membership and grants. These grants are predominantly for ethnic programming and sometimes for replacement equipment, and are allocated from the federally funded Community Broadcasting Foundation. “Over the years the station has also received valuable funding from our local Community branches of the Bendigo Bank under their extremely generous Community Grant scheme. ROTARY’S INVOLVEMENT “Rotary has had a connection with 96.5 InnerFM almost since the station’s inception. “The Rotary Hour”, now renamed “Rotary in Action”, has been a fixture for almost 20 years. “Each Tuesday, at 4pm, a Rotarian, drawn from the three Districts across our listening area, broadcasts an hour of Rotary news, personality interviews and the occasional piece of music. “Our own Rotary Club of Doncaster guru and legend, Jack Tanner, has been the leader of the “Rotary in Action” broadcasting pack for, I believe, more than 18 years. “He’s been supported by Keith Anderson of Templestowe, Don Bowden, North Balwyn and Don Hamilton, Rosanna. Each of these Rotarians has been on air for at least a decade and represents the Districts 9790, 9800 and 9810. “How important is the program? I believe our “Rotary in Action” slot is not a mainstream musical platform but an important, wonderful, and yes even a privileged opportunity, for us to spread the Rotary message with informed commentary about our great organisation. “To any with reservations as to Community Radio’s effectiveness and reach let me illustrate why, as I believe, you should put those thoughts aside. “The last major polling of the listening audience was the “2012 McNair Ingenuity Research Community Radio Listener Survey”. This survey is done every five years so the data available is very recent. “It showed a huge number of Australians, aged 15 years and above, listen to community radio each and every month. “In an average week 15,648,000 Australians listen to all forms of radio of which 25%, or over four million four hundred thousand, listen to community radio. “Community Radio listeners are dedicated and consistent with the average time tuned in a whopping 14.1 hours per week. “In Melbourne last year, an estimated 1,939,000 people were listening to community radio in an average month.
“As mentioned previously 96.5 InnerFM has a catchment audience of well over 250,000 people. Therefore, according to this research, more than 62,000 listen to our radio station at some time in any given month. “Some of the old hands at the station believe we have, at any moment of the day between 7am and 7pm, somewhere between 3000 and 5000 listeners. FUNDING IS REQUIRED “This presentation is very opportune because next week the Station is holding a Radiothon to raise funds for new equipment. This is the first such event the Station has conducted for more than five years. “We start at 7am on Monday morning and go through to Sunday night. Once again, please consider becoming a member of the Station and maybe even making a one-off donation logging our Rotary Club as the reason the contribution has been made. LISTEN IN “Don’t forget to listen to “Rotary in Action” every Tuesday at 4pm. Our program’s motto is “Rotary in Action – every Tuesday at 4 pm every week of the year”. “Put the time in your planners and set a reminder so that it becomes part of your Rotary week. Mind you, listening to our “Rotary in Action” program does not constitute a make-up. “Contact your presenters, interact with them, call them while they’re on-air, and address emails to them. Keith, Jack and I are in the 9810 District Handbook and I’ll always pass on your comments to the two Dons. “Team leaders and committee members - don’t forget to include me on your email list for any community service announcements or projects that your committee may be involved in. “Of course, you can listen at any time, day or night, 7 days a week. Who knows, you might even hear my voice if you listen to the occasional breakfast program from 6am to 9am. “And become a member, and supporter, of our station. “96.5 InnerFM – The Sound of Our City. “Thank you.”

INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE - NEWS
Ern Dawes brought to our attention an interesting article in the My Career section of The Age (26 October 2013) see attached PDF Document. The article refers to the work of the Balibo Trust which was established to honour the memories of the five Australian journalists (the Balibo Five - Greg Shackleton, Tony Stewart, Malcolm Rennie, Brian
Peters and Gary Cunningham) who died in 1975 in East Timor, as well as another Australian journalist Roger East who died while investigating their deaths. The Trust has recently unveiled a restored Portuguese fort (to be used for a museum and visitors’ centre) and are about to commence a second project of a building that will provide
visitors’ accommodation. The Rotary East Timor Roofing Company has been involved in both of these restorations projects. Pat Armstrong, Team Leader, International
