The Purpose of an Ancillary Product

The purpose of an ancillary product is for promotion and most importantly the need to promote the artist(s), so that the artist can be linked to the music when it is bought. The 2 things are just as impotent as one another.

For music videos the ancillary product will work alongside with the music video because it represents the artists image & branding, which is all to do with the style of the artist and what is expected from the audience from the genre of music (if they are not challenging the conventions).

Examples of the use of ancillary products in relation to the music industry

-CD covers are still being made, although CD sales are dropping. This is because there are still a few people who still by CD’ s and also it is a way of visual branding, promoting who and what they of person the artist is. It can also be used for categorising electronic album on devices such as apple iTunes album icon helping fans, the CD offers extra things that cant be bought expanding and giving fan (audiences) more of a closer connection to the artist.

-Ancillary products are important to the artist& the music industry because it is a way of getting the artist out there. Regular communication to the artist gets lots of material out there, so the audiences can notice the artist and that there is some kind of awareness of the artist out there.

-It is a way the music industry can saturate the market to enhance sale, so they work to link things together

Codes & Conventions(the norms / what the audience expects)

Based on consumption on media products, there are rules (the norm / expectations) that govern the way a media text is constructed which has to be taken into consideration when making the media text or form

*It looks a certain way (how should it look)*Contains certain things (what is in it / certain texts)

These ‘rules’ are dependent on:1.What the media form / text is it

2.The genre of the media text / formThese ‘rules’ create expectations for different products

which help communicates the product with the audience who pays for it.
