Molly and Kaine say they owe their success to the fact that they work very well together, and they are not afraid to get crazy. Also at Ellis, Caleb Koerperich and Matthew Helm placed third in the same category. Elizabeth Ned- land placed fourth in extemporane- ous speaking. Miki Dorshorst placed fourth with her serious solo, and Molly and Morgan Jansonius placed sixth with their duet. On Feb. 16, the speech team competed in Colby. The team placed third overall. Placing second were: Miki in poetry, Elizabeth in extem- poraneous speaking and Ganon Henningson in humorous solo. Molly and Morgan placed third in duet and Miki placed fifth in serious solo. By LARA ZODROW Five years ago, the Oberlin high school library got new carpet, new lights, and new paint, thanks to the generosity of the Love family. Since then, new book shelves, tables and chairs, computers and computer tables have been added. Now you can walk into the library and see a beautiful cabinet that displays mem- orabilia from the Love family. The red oak cabinet was made by high school industrial arts teacher By JAMIE SODERLUND Zeke Jimenez, a seventh grader at Decatur Community Junior/ Senior High School, competed at the Sunflower State Spelling Bee held at Fort Hays State University on March 3. Zeke qualified for the state bee by first winning the Decatur County Spelling Bee. He competed against over 80 other students from all across the state. Zeke made it through five rounds and was eliminated in round six on the word “bureaucracy.” He placed in the top 20. Zeke is the son of Ben and Jen- nifer Jimenez. Students attend Spanish concert By MIKA HACKNEY Nearly 40 students attended a Spanish concert at the 12th Street Auditorium in Hays last Wednes- day. The performer was Ennio Emmanuel, a talented singer from Puerto Rico, who is taking over Jus- to Lamas’ tour for him this year. The Justo Lamas Group Concert is an educational program to pro- mote the study of Spanish. The group has been working on this in the U.S. since 1998. With its headquarters in Dallas, it has brought its program to more than 1,000 schools. After 15 year of concerts, Justo Lamas Group brought Ennio, a new artist with new songs and the same commitment to motivate Spanish students. The Oberlin students who at- tended the concert all seemed to really enjoy it. Senior Dannay Rhein said, “Fue muy bueno,” which means, “it was very good.” “It was fun,” said Ryan May. “He was very energetic and got involved with the crowd.” Spanish teacher Carol Brown said that she wanted the students to attend the concert in order to listen to music in Spanish with other stu- dents who are learning the language. She also said that she hopes it will inspire them to learn more about the culture and language in general. The concert was made up of mu- sic listened to by young people and also folk and traditional music. Be- tween each song, the singer talked to the audience in simple Spanish, making them participate throughout the concert. Josh Williby. He has been working on this cabinet for just over a year.
