About our Valedictory SpeakersValedictory speakers at Hawai‘i Pacific University are selected on the basis of grade point average

and service to the community.

Christine Tamayo, Bachelor of Science in NursingChristine Tamayo is from Honolulu, Hawai‘i and is the youngest and only daughter born to Genie and Editha Tamayo.

She will be graduating from Hawai‘i Pacific University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Instilled with a passion

to help others, Tamayo chose to pursue nursing for its truly humbling and rewarding career and finds it an honor and

privilege to be with individuals during a time of vulnerability. During her time at HPU, she was an active member

of the Student Nurses’ Association and fundraised and volunteered with local organizations, such as Hawai‘i Pacific

Health and the Blood Bank of Hawaii. Tamayo is also a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society

of Nursing. After graduation and passing the NCLEX, she will become a cardiac telemetry nurse in Washington and

plans to eventually bring back what she learns to the islands. She will continue to encourage those who can to donate

blood because of the tremendous reward of saving lives - plus it’s free!

Kit-U Wong, Master of Education in Educational LeadershipKit-U Wong was born in Macau but has called Hawai‘i home since she was seven. After graduating from Maryknoll

School, Wong earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Scripps College and has been sharing her love for learning

and economics at Maryknoll as a teacher ever since. She will be graduating from Hawai‘i Pacific University with a

Master of Education in Educational Leadership. Wong was named Teacher of the Year by the Hawai‘i Council on

Economic Education in 2018 for developing innovative strategies to inspire her students to succeed in economics and

personal finance. In addition to teaching, she also serves as Maryknoll School’s dean of social studies and mathematics.

In her spare time, Wong enjoys reading, writing, and traveling.

Commencement Speaker

Major General Arthur “Joe” LoganMajor General Arthur “Joe” Logan, former Adjutant General, Hawai‘i, is an HPU alumnus with a distinguished career

of service in Hawai‘i and abroad. As Adjutant General, Logan oversaw the training and readiness of 5,500 Hawai‘i

National Guard soldiers and airmen and served as the Homeland Security Advisor to the governor and the Director of

the Hawai‘i Emergency Management Agency.

From 1982-2002, Logan also concurrently served in the Honolulu Police Department. He completed his Bachelor of

Arts in Justice Administration and Management at HPU in 1993, while serving with the National Guard. Logan went

on to earn his Masters of Strategic Studies in 2004, at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

During his 40 years of military experience, Logan received numerous awards and decorations, including the Legion of

Merit, Bronze Star, and Meritorious Service Medal.


Graduating students wearing honors regalia are members of local, nation-al, or international honor societies. Honor cords, pins, or medallions iden-tify students as members of one of the societies or programs listed below:

Alpha Chi: Blue and green cords. Membership is limited to the top 10% of juniors and seniors based on their HPU GPA and completion of 30 credits at HPU.

Alpha Epsilon Delta: Red and violet cords. Membership is limited to students with at least a 3.2 GPA in science courses and a major interest in medicine.

Alpha Lambda Delta: Red, gold, and white cords. Membership is limit-ed to students in their first year at HPU who have achieved a GPA of 3.5.

Alpha Sigma Lambda: Maroon and gold cords. Membership is limited to undergraduate students at least 27 years of age who have a GPA of 3.2.

Beta Beta Beta: Green and red cords. Membership is limited to students enrolled in biological sciences with a GPA of at least 3.0.

Chi Alpha Sigma: Gold medallions. Membership is limited to students in HPU athletics who have earned the equivalent of an intercollegiate varsity letter and have maintained a GPA of at least 3.4.

Delta Mu Delta: Purple and gold cords. Membership is limited to under-graduate and graduate students in the business degree program having a minimum GPA of 3.4 and 3.6 respectively.

Kappa Mu Epsilon: Lapel pins. Membership is limited to undergraduate students majoring in mathematics who have earned a GPA of 3.0 or better and rank in the upper 35% of their class.

Lambda Pi Eta: Red and white cords and lapel pin. Membership is limit-ed to students majoring in communication who have a minimum cumula-tive GPA of 3.25 for all communication courses.

Mu Kappa Tau: Royal blue cord and lapel pin. Membership is limited to undergraduate or graduate marketing students who have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and undergraduate students who are either in the top 10% of their junior class or top 20% of their senior class.

Phi Alpha: Single gold cord. Membership is limited to students enrolled in the social work degree program who have an overall cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a GPA of 3.25 in social work courses.

Phi Alpha Theta: Lapel pins and sashes. Membership is limited to stu-dents majoring in history ranking in the top 35% of their class with a GPA of at least 3.1 in history classes.

Pi Sigma Alpha: Medallion. Membership is limited to students majoring or having taken at least six upper-division credits in political science and have a cumulative GPA of 3.2.

Psi Chi: Blue and silver cords. Membership is limited to students in psy-chology who have a cumulative GPA of 3.45 and rank in the top 35% of their class.

Sigma Delta Pi: Lapel pins. Membership is limited to students studying Spanish language and culture who have a GPA of 3.0 in their Spanish courses and rank in the top 35% of their class.

Sigma Tau Delta: Red and black cords. Membership is limited to stu-dents majoring in English or minoring in Writing, Film Studies, or Litera-ture who have a cumulative GPA of 3.44.

Sigma Theta Tau: Orchid and white cords. Membership is limited to nursing students who have a GPA of 3.0 (3.5 for graduate students) and are of junior or senior status with a ranking in the highest 35% of the nursing class.

Upsilon Pi Epsilon: Maroon and white cords and lapel pin. Member-ship is limited to students in the study of information systems, computer science, and computer information systems who have a GPA of 3.0 for undergraduate students or a 3.5 for graduate students.

University Scholar: Gold-ribboned honors medallion signifies a Univer-sity Scholar who has maintained at least a 3.4 GPA in addition to complet-ing nine honors-designated courses in their degree program, participated in extracurricular activities, and completed a senior presentation.

Honors Regalia

Academic honors and degrees for this ceremony are calculated based upon grades earned prior to commencement. Final honors and degrees are conferred when the University Registrar posts the degree to the student’s official transcript. Students graduating with HPU honors are wearing an honors sash as follows: Associate degree students graduating With Honors

(with overall 3.4 – 4.0 HPA) receive a blue sash; Bachelor degree students graduating Summa Cum Laude (3.9 – 4.0 HPA), Magna Cum Laude (3.7 – 3.89 HPA), and Cum Laude (3.4 – 3.69 HPA) receive a green sash; and Master degree students graduating With Distinction (3.8 – 4.0 HPA) receive a gold sash.

Academic Honors and Degree Conferral

Graduates and faculty participating in HPU’s commencement ceremonies wear traditional academic attire. Associate and bachelor’s degree candidates wear black gowns with straight sleeves. Master’s degree candidates wear black gowns with oblong sleeves and hoods with colors that represent their degree programs. Doctoral candidates wear black gowns with bell-shaped sleeves, including three velvet bars, black velvet panels down the front with

the university logo, black velvet tam, and hoods with the colors that represent their degree program. Faculty may wear the regalia representing the univer-sity from which they received their terminal degree. At HPU, graduates may also wear lei in addition to honors cords, sashes and stoles. On behalf of the Hawai‘i Pacific University Alumni Council, congratulations on your graduation from Hawai‘i Pacific University. Celebrate with family, friends, loved ones, and classmates as this is a special day for all of you. Today you will join the HPU Alumni ‘Ohana comprised of over 45,000 individuals around the world. Last year, the Hawai‘i Pacific University Alumni Council was formed with 21 alumni spanning 8,000 miles representing Hawai‘i, California, Washington, Colorado, Chicago, New York, Washington D.C., Sweden, Norway, and Brazil with the goal of connecting HPU Alumni around the world. Within the last year and a half, we kicked off our inaugural Honolulu Alumni Pau Hana bringing 70 alumni back to campus for a night of memories, laughter and networking. We hosted pau hana events, sponsored Grad Fest, wrote letters for a cause and celebrated the graduating class with a toast to the future, relaunched the Alumni Luau, co-hosted Student Welcome Receptions, Grad Fest Fall 2019, HPU’s 54th birthday and more pau hanas. It is my hope to see you at a future event and that you remain connected with the University and the Alumni. After today, many of you will depart Hawai‘i onward to your next journey around the world, but never forget you will always have an ‘ohana of over 45,000 fellow alumni. This is not a “goodbye forever,” but rather an “until we meet again,” as we will gladly welcome you back to the islands with open arms.
