Dear Parents and Caregivers, Despite the bitterly cold effects of the latest cold front passing through Sydney, the tempo within the school has been blisteringly hot with so much going on with tremendous involve- ment from all students. Over the weekend Year 9 Visual Arts students attended the annual Art Retreat in the magnifi- cent surroundings of the Shoalhaven at famous Australian Artist – Arthur Boyd’s Bundanon. Bundanon is a location which offers students the opportunity to experience art in a new and exciting context, outside of classrooms and gallery spaces. The venue itself provided a great opportunity for all students to explore and be absorbed by the world of art. They completed a series of workshops that were conducted in a wide variety of locations, such as at the river which was a clear favourite. They visited one of the Artists in residence at the property and heard about her contemporary artistic practice. They had the opportunity to analyse and interpret the works in the Arthur Boyd exhibition within the same context as is required by the school curriculum. Students created some fabulous artworks which will be shared in the newsletter in the coming weeks. Congratulations to the Year 9 students on the manner with which they conducted themselves on this retreat. Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Despite the bitterly cold effects of the latest cold front passing through Sydney, the tempo

within the school has been blisteringly hot with so much going on with tremendous involve-

ment from all students.

Over the weekend Year 9 Visual Arts students attended the annual Art Retreat in the magnifi-

cent surroundings of the Shoalhaven at famous Australian Artist – Arthur Boyd’s Bundanon.

Bundanon is a location which offers students the opportunity to experience art in a new and

exciting context, outside of classrooms and gallery spaces. The venue itself provided a great

opportunity for all students to explore and be absorbed by the world of art. They completed

a series of workshops that were conducted in a wide variety of locations, such as at the river

which was a clear favourite. They visited one of the Artists in residence at the property and

heard about her contemporary artistic practice. They had the opportunity to analyse and

interpret the works in the Arthur Boyd exhibition within the same context as is required by the

school curriculum.

Students created some fabulous artworks which will be shared in the newsletter in the coming

weeks. Congratulations to the Year 9 students on the manner with which they conducted

themselves on this retreat. My thanks to Ms. Bambach and Ms. Leal for their inspirational men-

torship of these students.

The annual Concerto Competition is always a musical highlight of the year and this year was no

exception. We were joined by the internationally recognised violin soloist and string competition

judge, Charmian Gadd.

The night saw 11 soloists perform with our productions orchestra – RHOBO. Ms Gadd awarded 3rd

place to Dani Christelis for her performance of the Violin Concertino in D Major by Kuchler; 2nd

place went to Oliver Rice who sang 'Das Himmlische Leben', and 1st Place was awarded to Antho-

ny Chuang who performed the 1st movement of the Cello Concerto No.1 in C Major by Haydn.

In the Senior Section there were 6 performances. Avigayil Erlich, Joseph Newton and William Ste-

venson gave commendable performances. In 3rd place Ms Gadd rewarded Seth Gabrielsson for

his lyrical performance of the Serenade for Guitar, 2nd place went to Lucas Leung with his perfor-

mance of the Concertino for Clarinet and in 1st place the blistering performance of the Arutunian

Trumpet Concerto by Emma Styles.

The Senior Dance evening on Tuesday evening was another spectacular showcase. The five Year

12 dancers held the audience captivated by their dynamic, exuberant, passionate, innovative

and creative performances. As special were the younger dancers who danced dances choreo-

graphed by each of the Year 12 students. Ms. Collier Walsh can be very proud of the standard of

dance achieved by her students and we know they will excel in their final performance examina-

tions next week.

On Thursday evening the Year 12 Students who did 4 Unit English shared short excerpts from their

works. Their Major Work Journals were on display and supervising teachers described the ‘agony

and the ecstasy’ of the Extension 2 journey. The eight students involved certainly had the audi-

ence spellbound with their major works.

Jeans for Genes Day on Friday was well supported by all students throughout the school and we

look forward to making a sizable donation to that worthy cause.

Student achievements this week include:

Kai Mashimo and Aaron Lieberfreund, who took part in the Legacy Public Speaking competi-

tion, achieved something never done before. They were both selected to go through to the

Regional Finals (three students are selected from all eastern suburbs schools - very hard to get

one through, let alone two). Congratulations to Aaron, who has never done a competition

before and for Kai who works so hard at getting it perfect. Thank you and well done Mrs. Kar-

ney, who is exceptionally proud of their achievements.

The U14 Rugby side had a tremendous win over the Scots U14C team on Saturday while the

U16 Rugby team played against Joeys and were soundly beaten.

The U18 Football side had a convincing win over St Patrick's while both the Year 10 and Year 8

teams drew with The Kings School.

I include an email from Raphael Masters in Year 11.

“I am writing to you from Beijing. It is the 26th day of the Australian Youth Orchestra's 22nd In-

ternational Tour. I am one of 5 under 18s lucky enough to be on this tour and also happen to

be the youngest member of the hundred piece orchestra. The orchestra is made up of all the

very best musicians under 25 from across the country. We have been so lucky to work with

two of the world’s best musicians, conductor Manfred Honeck and international sensation

pianist Hélène Grimaud. The past 3 weeks has been the most inspiring and incredible I have

ever experienced. I have done some incredible things, seen so much and learnt a great

deal. From rehearsals in Holland, to concerts in Germany, China and Australia, it has truly

been an incredible experience. Below is the information for the final Sydney concert. Thank

you once again for allowing me to embark on this incredible trip.”

First XI Versus St Pats 30th July 2016 - Result Won 5-1

Not too much football love this week. This game was a scrappy affair that did not do justice to the

teamwork that lies at the heart of a good team. There was far too much one out stuff and not

enough ball movement. Hopefully the boys will learn to think a little more about the game on days

like this. Apart from Codie making an impressive debut in goals, the highlight was lunch at Leich-

hardt on the way home. The owners of the Turkish food forum in Marketplace were delighted with

the boys’ enthusiasm for fresh gozleme, HSP and doner kebabs. I think we doubled their profits for

the day.

Year 10 Versus Kings School 30th July 2016 - Result Drew 0-0

This was a terrific game of football between two evenly matched teams. Our defence is looking a

lot more solid than earlier in the year which allowed us to keep the opposition pinned in their own

half. Finn and Oz in the middle have formed a beautiful partnership and Luke at left back had his

best game of the year. Eric went close to scoring just before half time with a nicely improvised toe

poke and Piripi was a constant threat down the left wing. So there was no score at half time.

The second half continued to ebb and flow. Kings had a good chance that shaved the post then

James took hold of the game by the scruff of the neck. He set up 3 clear cut chances for us in the

space of 10 minutes and really imposed himself on the game. It is always good to see a player

stand up when a game is in the balance. Luc B-M went close then Toby did well to get a shot on

target under pressure from the opposition.

This team is starting to play some good football with everyone buying into the team ethic.

Well done boys.

Year 8 Versus SGS 30th July 2016 - Result Drew 1-1

What an outstanding team performance this was. Reddam played the whole game a man down

so everyone needed to put their best foot forward and didn’t they what. Coach Diogo packed

the defence and relied on the counter attack. Jimmy Z, Hugo, David and Charlie threw them-

selves into tackles with seemingly no regard for their bodies. Even though we were a goal down

early in the game the boys never shirked their task. Emile was superb at the back, marshalling the

troops and clearing the ball to Harry. Harry was the perfect link, holding the ball up to simultane-

ously give our defence a rest and to wait for support to arrive. This was how we scored our goal

late in the first half. Harry and Charlie had a nice interchange of passes before Harry played Clay

through on goal and he calmly found the back of the net.

So 1-1 at oranges and then things really took off. SGS laid siege on the Reddam goal but somehow

Reddam managed to keep the ball out. If it wasn’t a magic save from our keeper or yet another

last ditch tackle, it was the woodwork that saved us. Then we would launch a counter with Alexi M

now joining in the fun with Harry to put on a terrific show of counter attacking football. They looked

like they had the ball on a string, attracting a few defenders before playing Clay or Charlie in be-

hind the defence. We could have stolen the game late on but in the end neither side deserved to

lose such an entertaining game. So a big well done boys.

LEGACY PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION

2016 ICAS Competition in Mathematics

All students in Years 7, 8 and 9 will sit for the 2016 ICAS competition in Mathematics on Tuesday Au-

gust 16th. This one hour test consists of 35 multiple choice questions and the results provide valuable

feedback on individual strengths and weaknesses in Mathematics. For those students who have

sat the ICAS Mathematics competition in the past, it will also provide feedback on how the student

has performed compared to previous attempts. I rate this competition very highly as it tests the in-

nate mathematical ability of each student whilst providing information on areas that require reme-

diation. I feel that it is a most valuable experience for our students.

There is an opportunity for students to practice on line for this competition. Simply google “ICAS

practice questions” and follow the link to Mathematics. Year 7 should do Paper E, Year 8 do paper

F and Year 9 do paper G. Note that the Year 7 students are not allowed to use a calculator.

Best wishes to all participants.

MATHS NEWS

Last Friday, Kai Mashimo and Aaron Lieberfreund competed in the Legacy Public Speaking Com-

petition where they were required to present a five-minute prepared speech and a two-minute

impromptu speech.

In their prepared speeches, Aaron spoke on the topic of "Artificial Intelligence" and Kai spoke on

"The Afterlife". Their impromptu topic was "Sound the Alarm".

It was a tough competition against students from schools including SCEGGS, Kambala, Randwick,

Newington and St Catherine's. Only three students were selected to go through to the regional

finals and I am delighted to announce that both Kai and Aaron were successful. This is a wonderful

achievement for both students and we wish them both the best of luck in the regional finals on

Tuesday 16th August.

The Suncorp Bank ESSI Money Challenge turns the normal ESSI Money game that is played all year

round into a national competition for two weeks every year.

Students compete in the Suncorp Bank ESSI Money Challenge for their chance to win a $1000 cash

deposit into a personal Suncorp Bank Kids Savings Account and a bonus cash deposit of $4000 for

their school!

The Suncorp Bank ESSI Money Challenge goes "live" at 9.00am (Brisbane AEST) on Monday, 22 Au-

gust 2016. Students can commence play at any time after this, but must complete the game and

submit their score by 5.00pm (Brisbane AEST) on Friday, 2 September 2016. Students can only at-

tempt the game a maximum of 5 times.

WHAT IS ESSI MONEY?

Through a 'virtual reality' that simulates 6 months, students achieve an understanding of how deci-

sions made throughout a time period can have both positive and negative impacts on their finan-

cial situation. It allows students to practise real life financial transactions and experience the conse-

quences in a fun and challenging way.

The online learning platform means that students can use the resource both in the classroom and

at home, and the teacher can monitor the student’s progress throughout the game.

ESSI Money allows participants to achieve an understanding of the basic concepts surrounding fi-

nancial management, in the areas of Earning, Saving, Spending and Investing – ESSI!

The player is required to undertake a series of financial challenges during a certain period in order

to achieve the best possible financial result. The ‘play time’ will be relatively short – up to a maxi-

mum of 6 hours – however, the game will simulate the results/outcomes of the player’s decisions

over a 6 month time period.

It is established from the outset of the game that, whatever age the player is in real life, in this

game he/she is over 18 years old – this allows the individual, within the game, to be able to apply

for a credit card, buy a car etc.

In addition to Earning, Saving, Spending and Investing, the themes and concepts that are covered

and flow through the whole game include:

The need to seek advice from suitably qualified advisors and professionals

The importance of establishing a Budget and Goal setting to achieve your financial goals
