Dear Parents and Caregivers,
This week has been a week of external assessments for many students. The annual NAPLAN
test for Years 7 and Year 9 have kept those students busy on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thurs-
day. The Year 10 students wrote the Allwell test on Wednesday. We know that our students
have taken these tests very seriously and that the results will be of use to their teachers to bet-
ter understand their students.
This week also sees the second week of Parent-Student-Teacher meetings. Year 8 and Year 10
students and their parents had their opportunity to get feedback on their progress to date.
These evenings have been well attended and the value of the evening is incredible. The part-
nership between teacher, student and parent is so important and these evenings serve to
strengthen those relationships.
This Sunday we have our Open Day from 10:00am to 2:00pm and many students will be per-
forming, involved in various activities or taking prospective parents around the school. Please
pop in, invite friends and come and get an insight into the life of the school and what we be-
lieve sets us apart. The canteen will be open so your Sunday coffee could be enjoyed on the
rooftop or listening to live music courtesy of the various ensembles. The program of the day’s
activities is included later in this newsletter.
Congratulations to our Theatre Sports team who competed in the first heat of the interschool
challenge. On the evening they were brilliant, winning the heat and will proceed to the next
round.
Other individual achievements include:
Alisa Tyshchenko participated in the NSW Fencing Championship winning the State
Championship for Under 15 Girl's Foil. Incredible Alisa, and it is great to have some new
stars in our school fencing team.

Romy Glass took part in the auditions for X Factor last Friday. She made it through all rounds
and now waits to hear back from the X Factor team. We congratulate her on her bravery and
for putting herself forward for this grueling competition.
Valentina Ivanov was away for over one month playing tennis overseas. Her results are incred-
ible coming second at the 2nd Qatar ITF Junior Open and then competing as the Number 1
seed of the New Zealand Junior Fed Cup team. They competed against 15 other countries in
New Delhi, to qualify for the World Finals. They scored a good win over China to make the top
four of the Asia-Oceania region and this qualifies them as one of sixteen teams to take part in
the ITF Junior Fed Cup World Finals in Budapest, Hungary later this year. The team also beat
Malaysia and Kazakhstan.
Bianca Cruz is playing in the Tennis World Twilight Tournament this weekend at Sydney Olym-
pic Park. Good luck Bianca.
Have a great week,
Dave Pitcairn

REDDAM HOUSE FOOTBALL MATCH REPORT 07/05/16
First XI versus Barker Centennial Park Won 6-0
Putting aside the disappointment of losing the midweek knockout competition without conceding
a goal, the boys turned on the style against Barker. The Birdman was in full flight doing his best Tim-
my Cahill impersonation seemingly scoring at will. I thought I was going to have to get the shoes
and socks off at one stage to keep tally of the score such was the dominance of our play. He was
ably supported by Mighty Max and Ethan playing beautiful balls in behind the opposition fullbacks
for our speedy wingers Seth and Liam to run onto. In fact, the combinations and fluency of the ball
movement was very impressive and this game was never in doubt. Carlos in goals was rarely trou-
bled and his distribution from the cage was the starting point for many of our raids.
So all in all, an impressive start to the season and hopefully some more difficult challenges lie
ahead.
Year 10 versus SGS Reg Bartley Reserve Lost 4-1
Football can be a cruel lover. We should have had this game wrapped up at half time such was
our dominance but instead found ourselves down 0-2 at oranges.
We started like a house on fire with some terrific passing rushes down the left hand side of the pitch
with Luke W, Luke Angelou, Brock and Piripi to the fore. Eric was making an excellent target man in
the best Viduka style and this looked like it was going to be a walkover. Only poor finishing kept us
scoreless. SGS got a goal against the run of play and our boys seemed to lose a little faith. As so
happens when the heads go down, the opposition got another and we had some work to do. Luc
Bennett McNeill pulled one back for us after being played in by Eric and that seemed to lift the
team as we again dominated but our finishing was still wayward. A late goal to SGS gave a final
score line that didn’t really reflect the game.
This team has a lot of potential and better days are ahead as the boys become more familiar with
our system and style of play.

The Year 9 IST Students undertook online training in HTML5 and CSS3 for creating web pages. This
was done on the Grok Learning Site which included multiple schools across Australia. They were
enrolled in the “Intermediate” study path and were up against Year 9’s and Year 10’s from schools
like Luther College, Queenwood School For Girls, The Hills Grammar School, Abbotsleigh, Knox
Grammar School and many others.
Three of our students stayed on the leader board throughout the four week course and were
awarded perfect scores of 240/240 for the work on the course.
All three faired exceptionally well in the final peer-assessed competition with 7 of Reddam’s Year 9
students coming in the top 50 most liked sites. Some of these are displayed below:

YEAR 9 IST CONTINUED
Last Friday, 6th March, Reddam hosted Sydney Gram-
mar School. The topic was media and popular culture.
While there were some excellent debates, it was over-
all a tough night for Reddam. However, our Year 9
team continued its extraordinary and unprecedented
run, having now won 6/6 debates. This Friday Reddam
will host SCEGGS at home. This will be our last competi-
tion of the regular season before we move into the fi-
nal rounds. Please feel free to come along and sup-
port our teams. Debates for Years 7-9 begin at 6:30pm,
and for Years 10-12 at 7:30pm. Looking forward to see-
ing you there! From L to R the students are Gili, Rachael, Kai and Aaron

On Tuesday night our Intermediate Theatre Sports team played their heat in the Theatre Sports
Challenge at St Andrew’s Cathedral School taking out first place against 7 other schools!
The team played 4 rounds with 1 minute, 2 minute, 3 minute games and open scenes. They outdid
themselves with their 3 minute scene which was the story of Hansel and Gretel in the genre of Film
Noir. The scene brought the house down and earned them the only full score of the night.
This takes them to the semi-finals which we will be sure to notify you of when the date is an-
nounced.
Congratulations to the team and their coach Daniel Cordeaux!

Theatre Club was in for a treat on Monday night at the Opera House Drama Theatre with a hilari-
ous night of Noel Coward’s Hay Fever. The 28 students and 4 teachers who attended were exhila-
rated by the stand out performances of the cast, as well as a dynamic and original set design; al-
most a character in itself. The 1920’s comedy is a fast -paced whirlwind of the hilarious behavior of
the very unorthodox Bliss family and their invited guests.
Following the performance, the lead actress, Heather Mitchell, shared with me the cast’s appreci-
ation of the Reddam students who were seated in the front 2 rows, and how thoroughly engaged
and receptive they were.
Here is what some of the students had to say about the production:
One of the most humorous, yet highly sophisticated productions I have seen. Definitely a must see!
Brigit Shkolnik
Hay Fever was a hilarious and gripping play that gave us Drama students an insight into the hard
work that goes into a production of such quality. Julian Weiner-Angelopulo
Hysterical! A beautifully crafted production, full of unconventional family conflicts and of course
Noel Coward’s irresistible wit. Definitely one to see! Nisha McArthur
With a cast of extremely talented actors, Hay Fever demonstrated to us all the importance of tim-
ing in executing comic lines. It was like watching the Improv game “Character Swap” on a large
scale. Entertainment at its finest! Jamie Reisin.

Y e a r 9 s t u d e n t A a r o n Lieberfreund spent the afternoon at Fishburners, Australi’s largest
Startup space. It is supported by Google for Entrepreneurs which provides technical content and infrastructure to support increas-ing demand from developers and startups and help grow their local economies.
It was here that Aaron was intro-duced to Brian Lim; Polymath, Serial Entrepreneur, Singularity University Alumni and founder of 3 space startups including his most recent company Hyper-cubes. Brian describes his current startup as “a way we help companies improve their ecological
footprint by reducing the waste output, Hypercube is capable of tracking pollution on the entire surface of the planet, through the use of low cost satellites and senso-ry technology”.
Aaron was able to share his book of ideas relating to science and tech-nology with Brian in the hope of gaining insight into the journey tech entrepreneurs face in the initial ide-ation phase. Aaron was able to see how Brian pitched his initial idea and provided crucial feedback on the significance of testing and building a prototype and the change that occurs throughout the process.

To prepare for the new elective option ‘Entrepreneurship’ that was
initiated last year in the Year 9 Commerce program for term 4, we are excited to be apart of a p i l o t p r o g r a m t h r o u g h Startup.business (an initiative of Phronesis Academy Pty Ltd). It is a collaboration between academ-ics and entrepreneurs, with the mission to build prosperity globally through entrepreneurship educa-tion. It aims to present to 14-17 year-olds the opportunity & know-how to become a successful en-trepreneur and inspire them to see entrepreneurship as another career choice. The pilot begun last week and will continue for the remainder of the year. Essentially there are 6 modules that the students will work through based on the two frameworks. The first is making sense of complexity whereas the second helps students organise for an activity by Asking, Trying, Doing and Reflecting. By constantly revisiting this cycle students are able to take ownership of their learning experiences, develop a creative mindset, grow an understanding through en-quiry, trial, action and learning and also by noting the types of learning with which they work.
Startup.business has also encouraged us to grow our community of entrepreneurs by offering morning pitch workshops to our Year 10 Commerce students to en-sure they can continue their entrepre-neurial journey. These will run on Mon-day mornings from 8am – 8:50am at the Middle School. If you would like to at-tend these workshops and have not yet registered please contact Mrs Elisabeth Clarence.

This Term Year 9 students are learning about Personal Finance including earning an income, spending and saving, managing finances and investing. To help with this process the Common-wealth Bank is running 4 work-shops to support the strength of financial literacy amongst school aged children. The Start Smart program chang-es the way young people learn about money by empowering them to make wise financial de-cisions for themselves. This initia-tive was launched in 2012 and is now in it’s second year at Red-dam. We would like to thank Beth who has delivered these
workshops for her enthusiasm and encouragement of our students. “The workshops delivered by Beth have allowed us to be more aware about our spending habits
and what influences us to make decisions. Beth has helped us in that we are able to make in-formed decisions about what our needs are rather than focusing on our wants and in some ways impulse buying”. “Sometimes I don’t even think before I buy and have never really thought too much about the im-pact it will have on saving in the future. By saving small amounts now I know it will only help me make better decisions and more importantly be in control of my money”.
