challenges. Thanks for efforts even if the event is cancelled and thanks for the EXTRA efforts to keep events alive through rescheduling as needed. Finally, thanks to all of YOU as CMCS members for your patience and good nature in dealing with so much unexpected fall-out from the COVID19 situation. We’re in this together, stay strong, stay safe! Jim Slager 2020 CMCS Commodore s/v Salty Soul

Everybody caught up on your chores at the house? Finally able to read that book you’ve been dying to get to? Catch-ing up with old friends by phone (or by zoom)? Ahhh, finally a little more time to re-lax and get to some of those things you just never seem to have time for… AND just maybe getting a little cabin fever by now too, aren’t

you??!! Well gang, we’re just going to have to hang in there for the foreseeable future. The Govern-ment, businesses and all of us as individuals are working to figure out when it’s safe to come out. To some degree, we’ll be getting guidance, but ultimately, we will all have to determine for our-selves and our family when we can come out of isolation. So, CMCS may have events on the calendar, but individual members need to make their own decisions on how to move forward. That said, I can tell you that the City of Cape Coral facilities are closed until the end of May, so there will NOT be a May membership meeting at the Yacht Club, BUT there will be a “virtual” May membership meeting on zoom! The April mem-bership meeting on zoom was a blast! If you missed April’s meeting, please join us on May19. We’re also looking to hold the Estebel race hon-oring social distancing practices, so please read on for the details in James Gallagher’s an-nouncement. The cruising calendar has taken a couple of set-backs due to the state shutdown and practical considerations we now face. Jean Blessing will detail some of the recent cancellations, but also cruise events we’re still working to keep in place – at least at this time. Liberty Ashore and the 50th CMCS Committee has also had to move some things on the calen-dar, but we are working to reschedule events as practical as possible for later in the year. Read on for more info. A HUGE thanks to all of the CMCS volunteers that have worked so hard to improvise and adapt to this very unusual year with all of the COVID19

Rear Commodore of Cruising ReportRear Commodore of Cruising Report

Ahoy, sailors!

The COVID-19 virus may be putting a damper on our cruis-ing calendar for a while. With the good news that we may have flattened the curve and the formation of the gover-nor’s task force on reopening Florida, it appears it will not happen overnight. We may have to hold cruises in an-chorages and forgo the usual cocktail hour/potluck so as to

not violate the groups of no more than 10 guide-line. You, of course, will need to participate as you see fit, considering your own health and risk factors. Here is where we stand: Bloody Mary Cruise is May 1 – 3, at the Pink Shell on Fort Myers Beach – cancelled due to COVID-19. Please note: if you made reserva-tions with the marina, those were cancelled. When I checked with them, they were still letting boaters rent slips, but no shower facilities are available as the resort is closed until further no-tice. The pool, however, is open. In addition, I understand most businesses on the beach are closed. James Gallagher, R/C Racing, is organizing the Jerry Pim Memorial/Estebel Night Race. Watch for notices about that with the idea that you might participate in this event at a cruiser, racer or observer. He has some guidelines to follow to keep us all safe. At the end of May, we return to Pelican Bay for our Memorial Day Cruise, the 22 – 25. A Cruise leader is needed for this event. Bev and Bob Duff have stepped forward to coordinate the games on the beach portion of the weekend, however with social distancing still the recom-mendation, there may be no games on the spit. We will have to play it by ear. The Chowder Cook-off has been moved and will be held in November as part of the membership meeting

Rear Commodore‑

Cruising Jean Blessing

for that month. We plan to do it up in grand style in honor of our 50th Anniversary. Watch for details in the Chowder Chatter. Summer schedule: In June, we journey to Fish-erman’s Village with Bob and Bev Duff on Fa-ther’s Day Weekend. As of this writing, the ma-rina is closed to transients, so we will be moni-toring for when they reopen. The July special interest cruise to Italy has been cancelled. August will find us at ‘Tween Waters for our Parrothead cruise. Let’s hope we can get to-gether then for sure! On a positive note, boating may be an activity that honors the guidelines of social distanc-ing…so I’m hoping you are able to get out on your boat! That will cover it for this month. See you on the water! Jean Blessing, R/C Cruising Jean Blessing Rear Commodore-Cruising s/v Jazzy

May’s activity will be a food drive to benefit Cape Coral Car-ing Center, our local food bank. The goal will be 2020 – either 2,020 pounds or $2,020 or any combination of the two. Let me know if you would like to help collect the donations and drop

them off at the Center. What they need in particular at this time are: Pasta sauce

Peanut butter Tuna Canned chicken Canned meat such as Spam Rice sides Mashed potato mixes And of course cash donations are welcome

So the next time you grab some groceries, place your pick up order, or arrange for delivery, please order extra for some of our less fortunate neighbors. Challenge your friends to do the same. When you get your donation together, text me at 239-233-0448 and leave it at your front door. One of my helpers or I will be over to pick it up in a socially distant fashion. Of course, if you want to drop your donation off at our door-step, you are welcome to do so as well. This will be going all of May, I can’t think of any better way to spend my time. Thank you for your gen-erosity - Fair Winds, Joan Perkett, Chairperson Ladies Bridge Club 239-233-0448/[email protected]

LIBERTY ASHORE THOUGHTS

Like the rest of the world we’ve had to change our life-styles recently, but I liken it to getting caught offshore in a

storm...you batten down the hatches and dig out the har-ness and tether and ride it out. When it’s all over, you have a heck of a story to tell!

So, back to Liberty Ashore... your guess is as good as mine as to when we’ll be capable of having 100 members in the same room but the plan is a reschedule of the Shrimp Boil on Sunday, October 25 in conjunction with the Commodores Dinner, a landlubber ver-sion of the Chowder Cookoff in November, and of course the Holiday Party in Decem-ber. And yes, in the back of my mind I’m try-ing to come up with some creative ways to make this work for all of us. In the meantime, I’m going to throw in some “virtual liberty ashore” challenges. I hope you play along. There may or may not be a virtual prize at the end. See “virtual liberty ashore” challenge flier #1 elsewhere in the Chowder Chatter. Stay safe; I miss you guys, Cindy Cindy Naumann Liberty Ashore Chairperson s/v Jolly Mon

Membership and Recruitment

Ahoy Mates,

On April 21, 2020 we held our first ZOOM virtual membership meeting. 24 members were able to attend. If you didn’t re-ceive the email notice, let me

know and I’ll forward that on to the Board. We signed on around 6:30pm and enjoyed socializing. At 7:00pm Jim Slager started the meeting using a power point presen-tation to take us through the

issues. There weren’t any guests. We learned that The Pink Shell marina is open but there’s no running water. James Gallagher spoke about the Estebel Race. There will be sin-gle handed and double handed classes. He is encouraging all boaters to take part. There won’t be any gatherings. This event will be restricted to social distancing guidelines. Look for more info about this. We could all use some time to be to-gether in spirit if not person to person. Cindy Naumann spoke about potential Liberty Ashore events in October and November. They included the Shrimp Boil, Commodores’ Dinner, Chowder Cook-off and Holiday Party. Joan Perkett is organizing a May food drive to benefit Cape Coral Caring Center. Joan says they need Peanut Butter, Canned Meat (Tuna, Chicken, SPAM), Pasta Sauce, Rice Sides, Mashed Potato mix. Cash is welcome too. Joan’s team will pick up the donations. Text the team at 239-233-0448. We lost Carl Brehm (Commodore 1984) on March 27, 2020 and we remembered Raimund Haunholter who passed this year also. Alan Fiske and his team are working on the vi-ability of the Summerset Event this year. Regarding the 50th CMCS Committee, Carol Pim is asking for pictures and comments from past

commodores for the booklet to be published in December. We need a Yearbook Volunteer. Any members who have IT experience would be a perfect fit for this task. Hope to see you out on the water and be safe out there. Remember attendance to our events and volun-teering contributes to what makes CMCS so spe-cial.

Fair winds and following seas, Cathy Friedel Fleet Recruiter s/v Ambiance
