    8errorlowermygrade?"asksanother.Suchquestionsshowthatrulesclearlyexistbutthattheyarealwaysshiftingandthusneedourongoingattention.Ourresearchshowssomeoftheshiftsthathaveoccurredinthelastcenturyalone.Somemechanicalandgrammaticalquestionsthatareoflittleornoconcerntodayusedtobeperceivedasextremelyimportant.Inthelate-nineteenthcentury,forinstance,instructorsatHarvardsaidthattheirstudents'mostseriouswritingproblemwastheinabilitytodistinguishbetweentheproperusesofshallandwill.Similarly,splitinfinitivesrepresentedaseriousproblemformanyinstructorsofthe1950s.Nowadays,atleastsincethestarshipEnterprisesetout"toboldlygo"wherenoonehasgonebefore,splitinfinitivesseemtowrinklefewerbrows.Theseexamplesofshiftingstandardsdonotmeanthatthereisnosuchthingas"correctness"inwriting-onlythatcorrectnessalwaysdependsonsomecontext.Correctnessisnotsomuchaquestionofabsoluterightorwrongasitisaquestionofthewaythechoicesawritermakesareperceivedbyreaders.Aswriters,wearealljudgedbythewordsweputonthepage.Weallwanttobeconsideredcompetentandcareful,andwritingerrorsworkagainstthatimpression.Theworldjudgesusbyourcontroloftheconventionswehaveagreedtouse,andweallknowit.AsRobertFrostoncesaidofpoetry,tryingtowritewithouthonoringtheconventionsandagreed-uponrulesislikeplayingtenniswithoutanet.Sinceyoualreadyknowmostoftheserules,themostefficientwaytoproceedistofocusonthosethatarestillunfamiliarorpuzzling.Toaidyouinthisprocess,wehaveidentifiedthetwentyerrorpatterns(otherthanmisspelling)thatweremostcommonamongU.S.collegestudentsinthelate1980sandlistthemhereinorderoffrequency.Thesetwentyerrorsarelikelytocauseyouthemosttrouble,soitiswellworthyourefforttocheckfortheminyourwriting.ThisareaofourWebsiteincludesbriefexamplesandexplanationsofeacherrorpattern;formoredetailandadditionalexamples,youshouldconsultyourhandbook.
