The year was 1973. Richard Nixonwas about to be inaugurated forhis second term as President.

While this was before the Watergate revelations, Nixondid not need Watergate to be disliked, even hated bymany Americans. Nixon had not ended the VietnamWar during his first term as he had promised. Many tiedthis fairly unpopular war to Nixon by this time.President Nixon was called many names by his detrac-tors, the most common being “Tricky Dick.” Althoughhe had been reelected by a sizable majority, large seg-ments of the American public ridiculed this man.

At that time, I served as Research Assistant to RabbiSeymour Siegel, Z’L. Professor Siegel was asked torecite the Benediction at the Nixon Inaugural. He felt aneed to base the prayer he would say on Jewish tradition. What was an appropriate prayer for the “leader of thefree world?”

Rabbi Siegel reasoned that the President of the UnitedStates was every bit as powerful in his day as the ancientemperors of Greece and Rome were in their day. Therewas a special prayer that historically was to be said when-ever one encountered an emperor or similar worldlyleader. Rabbi Siegel would recite this traditional prayer atthe inaugural, first in the Hebrew and then in Englishtranslation: “Blessed are You, L-rd our G-d, King of theuniverse, who has given of your glory to mortal man.”

With these words, Rabbi Siegel would proclaim beforethe millions watching the true source of power.

When The New York Times was informed of theintention to offer this blessing for President Nixon,Times reporters questioned whether it was fitting that aman hated by so many would be offered the same bless-ing as great past leaders, such as Alexander the Great orJulius Caesar, Professor Siegel calmly responded that thisprayer was historically offered when witnessing anemperor whether that emperor was good or bad, liked ordespised. Upon confronting worldly power, it wasimportant to acknowledge the power and proclaim the

true source of all power. This prayer was the way theRabbis could both praise the worldly ruler and acknowl-edge the Ruler of the World. For Rabbi Siegel, thisprayer was perfect.

During the inaugural activities of the past week, manyobserved how President Bush was booed by thousandsof those gathered at the Washington Mall when he firstappeared. These and other thousands cheered loudly asthe helicopter carrying President Bush and his family leftthe Capitol grounds. This was not a cheer of “job welldone.” This was a cheer of “good riddance.”

Of course, the hundreds of thousands of Obama sup-porters gathered for this historic event cheered virtuallyevery word uttered by the new President Obama. Yet,upon listening to Talk Radio that same day, I witnessedthe potshots and criticism launched by the anti-Obamapartisans. Their making fun of “The Anointed One,” asObama detractors love to call him in jest, was as obnox-ious as the boos earlier in the day at the WashingtonMall. Both outgoing President Bush and incomingPresident Obama have been blessed with part of thedivine spark of glory and power. Their rising to leader-ship represents a diving blessing. They each reflect partof the divine glory that guides this world. Encounteringthem is not a cause for booing or making light. OurAmerican Presidents who preside with power over muchof the world and whose actions have such a profoundimpact represent something much higher. The truesource of power is G-d. While their power is infinitesi-mally small in contrast to the power of G-d, all poweremanates from the One Source. This was the importantteaching of our Rabbis of old as they developed a prayerfor the occasion of witnessing a world leader. This wasthe teaching of Rabbi Seymour Siegel who taught thisfrom the podium on the Capitol steps in 1973. This les-son rings true for us as well today.

It is appropriate to back an opposing candidate foroffice. It is appropriate to be at times a member of the“loyal opposition” to the party or person in power. Butthe level of criticism which has risen to mockery andridicule is inappropriate. This is not how we shouldteach our children to react. As we inappropriately makefun of our elected leaders, we risk making fun of G-d,the ultimate source of power, the model Leader.

In the time of President Nixon when millions went too

A Tree's New YearResolution

Tu B'Shevat -- the 15th of the Hebrew month ofShevat -- is known as the "New Year for Trees."Naturally this would be a time for trees to engage insoul-searching -- the same way people do on RoshHashanah. Here is a tree's New Year Checklist:

• Did I shelter the seedlings that live in my shade -so they will grow up to be a next generation likemyself ?

• Did I grow towards the sun as a tree should, reach-ing up higher and higher towards that which I cannever grasp, but which nurtures me all the same themore I strive towards it?

• Did I make sure my roots remain firmly planted inthe soil that nurtures them, and did I drop my leavesthere in the fall to give back life to that which sustainsme?

• Did I ensure that my fruits were sweet and nour-ished all that came to enjoy them? Did everyone walkaway from me with a smile?

• Did I bend gently in the wind, accepting what G-dsends but never breaking or giving up hope?

• Did I grow in strength and wisdom with each newring this year?

Come to think of it, not a bad checklist for ushumans either!

At the time of the Inauguration of PresidentObama, it is important for all Americans, indeed all who inhabit this world, to honor hisposition and the true source of power:“Blessed are You, L-rd our G-d, King of theuniverse, who has given of your glory to mortalman.” Amen. •

"Don't get mad," said the philosophers

of the eighties, "get even."I am not sure if the objective of the ten plagues was for

the Almighty to get even with the nation that hadenslaved His people. Certainly there are Midrashicsources that correlate the ten plagues as direct punish-ment for Egyptian crimes against the Jewish people.(Tana D'bei Eliyahu Chapter 7) So perhaps we might saythat the Jewish people got even.

There is, however, no scriptural reference to the factthat they got mad. In fact, each time Moshe went toPharaoh a serene and calculated negotiation occurred."Let My people serve Me," Moshe commanded. WhenPharaoh refused his obstinence was met with a clear andcalculated threat. "If you refuse to allow the people toleave, I will send the following plague in you land." Andso it went. Sometimes a plague immediately followed a

warning, other times plagues came with no warning at all. When Pharaoh found Moshe and arranged for a cessa-tion of the scourge, Pharaoh reneged on his commit-ment soon after. Moshe became frustrated, perhaps heeven became impatient, but there was no anger until thefinal plague. Then, he not only got even, he got mad.

Moshe warned Pharaoh with the words of Hashem,"At about midnight, I will go out in the midst of Egyptand every firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die."(Exodus 11:4) Though Moshe detailed the ramificationsof the plague he was greeted with an apathetic response.

Finally the Torah tells us, that "Moshe left Pharaoh inburning anger" (Exodus 11:8) Why, only then did Moshestorm out in a rage? Was he not accustomed to the cal-lous recklessness of the Egyptian leader? What irked himduring the last encounter more than any of the previousones?

The great physicist Albert Einstein escaped the Nazi

inferno to find a haven in the United States. During World War II his letter to President Roosevelt initiated the effortthat spurred the creation of the atomic bomb. His theory of relativity was a prime factor in its development, andEinstein knew the destructive power that his ideas could potentially release. When Einstein heard in an August 6,1945, radio broadcast that an atomic device was dropped on the city of Hiroshima, he reacted with stunned silence. After a moment of somber reflection he only found two words to say. "Oy vey!"

Rabbi Shimon Schwab (d.1994) explains that Moshe had patience with Pharaoh up to a point. Throughout theordeal, the reckless king's obstinate decisions caused a great amount of discomfort to his people. Even when hisadvisors pleaded, "How long will this man [Moshe] be an obstacle, let them [the Jews] serve their G-d," Pharaohrefused. His recalcitrance brought plagues of pestilence, boils, locust, and darkness -- in addition to blood, frogs, andlice. All of these afflictions were vastly uncomfortable -- but not fatal. Even the fiery hail did not harm the G-d-fear-ing Egyptians that sought shelter.

The last, the Plague of the First Born, had the most devastating ramifications. It meant the deaths of thousandsof Egyptians "from the firstborn son of Pharaoh to those of the maidservant who was behind the millstone." It wasdevastation so powerful that the Torah says that "such has never been and will never be again." (Exodus 11:6)Pharaoh was able to stop the imminent destruction with one simple word -- "Go." Yet he chose to remain steadfastin his denial, bringing the downfall of his people and the death of innocents. And that callous and reckless behav-ior infuriated Moshe, whose compassion for the simplest of beings earned him the right to be the leader of theJewish nation. The stark contrast displayed by his nemesis appalled him to the point of rage. The Torah commandsus, "do not to hate the Egyptian, for you were a sojourner in his land." (Deuteronomy 23:8) The Torah's attitudetoward a nation that held us captive is even more compassionate than that of its own leaders. Barbaric leaders eggingon many simple people throughout the world, to act in a self-destructive manner are reminiscent of the Pharaoh whodestroyed his own family to save his ego. It's enough to make anybody -- even the most humble man who ever lived-- very angry.

They say adapt or die. But must we jetti-son the old to embrace the new? Is thechoice limited to modern or antiquated,

or can one be a contemporary traditionalist? Dothe past and present ever co-exist?

At the beginning of this week's Parshah we readthat Moses himself was occupied with a specialmission as the Jews were leaving Egypt. Moses tookthe bones of Joseph with him. Over a hundred yearsbefore the great Exodus, Joseph made the Childrenof Israel swear that they would take him alongwhen they would eventually leave Egypt. As viceroyof Egypt, Joseph could not hope to be buried inIsrael when he died, as his father Jacob was. TheEgyptians would never tolerate their political leaderbeing buried in a foreign land. But he did make hisbrethren give him their solemn undertaking thatwhen the time would come and all the Israeliteswould depart they would take his remains alongwith them.

And so it was that while everyone else was busypacking up, loading their donkeys, and getting readyfor the Great Trek into the Wilderness, Moses him-self was busy with this mission, fulfilling the sacredpromise made to Joseph generations ago.

Now Joseph was not the only one to be re-interred in the holy land. His brothers, too, wereaccorded the very same honor and last respects.Yet, it is only Joseph whom the Torah finds it nec-essary to mention explicitly. Why?

The answer is that Joseph was unique. While hisbrothers were simple shepherds tending to theirflocks, Joseph was running the affairs of state ofthe mightiest superpower of the day. To be a prac-ticing Jew while blissfully strolling through themeadows is not that complicated. Alone in thefields, communing with nature, and away from thehustle and bustle of city life, one can more easily bea man of faith. But to run a massive governmentinfrastructure as the most high-profile statesman in

the land and still remain faithful to one's traditions-- this is not only a novelty, this is absolute inspira-tion.

Thrust as he was from the simple life of a youngshepherd boy into the hub of the nation's capital tojuggle the roles of viceroy and Jew, Joseph repre-sented tradition amidst transition. It was possible,he taught the world, to be a contemporary tradi-tionalist. One could successfully straddle bothworlds.

Now that they were about to leave Egypt, theJews were facing a new world order. Gone wereslavery and oppression, and in their place were free-dom and liberty. During this time of transition, only Joseph could be their role model. They wouldneed his example to show them the way forwardinto uncharted territory, the new frontier.

That is why the Torah mentions only Joseph asthe one whose remains went along with the people. They needed to take Joseph with them so that, likehim, they too would make their own transition suc-cessfully.

Ever since leaving Egypt, we've been wandering. And every move has brought with it its own chal-lenges. Whether from Poland to America orLithuania to South Africa, every transition hascome with culture shocks to our spiritual psyche. How do you make a living and still keep theShabbat you kept in the shtetl when the factoryboss says "Cohen, if you don't come in onSaturday, don't bother coming in on Mondayeither!" It was a test of faith that wasn't at all easy. Many succumbed. But many others stood fast andsurvived, even flourished. It was the test of transi-tion -- and those who modeled themselves onJoseph were able to make the transition whileremaining committed to tradition.

Democracy and a human-rights culture havemade that part of Jewish life somewhat easier, butchallenges still abound. In all our own transitionstoday, may we continue to learn from Joseph. •

The sea had split. The enemy was drowned. And nowthe problems began.

The newly liberated nation was stranded in a scorchingdesert facing an unending landscape of uncertainties.Taskmasters no longer responded to their cries - Hashemdid. He responded with protection and shelter on everylevel. But the Jews were still not satisfied. They were hun-gry. "If only we had died.. in the land of Egypt. Why did you lib-erate us to die in the desert? " they cried to Moshe. (Exodus16:3 )

Hashem responds with a most miraculous and equallymysterious celestial gift. Food fell from the heavens, butthe people accepted it with piqued curiosity. Indeed, thedew-covered matter satiated their hunger, but they werenot sure what exactly it was. "Each man said to his friend, manna ! For they did not know what it was." (Exodus 16:14) Thecommentaries explain that the word manna is a Hebrew-Egyptian form of the word "what."

At first, the Torah only discusses the physical attributesof the manna: "it was like a thin frost on the earth." TheTorah continues to tell us that on Shabbos the manna didnot fall. A double portion fell on Friday - the extra portionwas allotted for Shabbos. In referring to the manna ofShabbos the Torah tells us, "the children of Israel named itmanna , and it tasted like a cake fried in honey." Later, how-ever, the Torah describes the manna's taste differently: "ittasted like dough kneaded with oil." (Numbers 11:8) Why doesthe Torah wait to describe the manna's taste until Shabbos? Also, when did it taste sweet and when did it only taste likeoily dough?

Another question is before Shabbos people asked, "whatis it?" On Shabbos they named the miraculous food - "It iswhat” (manna). Why did the Jews wait until Shabbos todescribe concretely the miraculous edible with an officialtitle manna - the 'what' food?

In the town of Lomza there was a group of woodcuttershired by the townsfolk to cut down trees for firewood. Thestrong laborers swung their axes and hit the trees all whileshouting a great cry HAH with each blow. The timing hadto be flawless. If the cry HAH came a split second early or,a second after the blade hit the tree, it would be a worth-less shout that would not aid the lumberjacks at all.

Each year, Zelig the meshugener (crazy), a once-success-ful businessman who had lost his mind together with the

loss of a young daughter, accompanied the woodcutters ontheir quest. He stood in the background and precisely asthe ax hit the tree he, too, shouted on the top of his lungsHAH!

When it was time to get paid, the deranged Zelig alsostood in line. "I deserve some silver coins!" he exclaimed."After all without, the chopping would not be as effective!"

The case was brought before the Chief Rabbi of Lomzawho looked at the five lumberjacks and then at themeshugener. "Listen carefully, Zelig," said the Rabbi. Hethen took 10 silver pieces in his hand and jingled themloudly. They made a loud clanging noise. Then he gaveeach woodsman two silver pieces. He turned to Zelig andsmiled. "The men who gave the labor get the coins, and,Zelig, you who gave the sound, get the sound of thecoins!"

Hashem in His infinite wisdom began our lessons in liv-ing through our daily fare. The Talmud states that the tasteof the manna was integrally linked with the taster'sthoughts. If one thought of steak the manna tasted likesteak; if one thought of borscht, the manna tasted likeborscht. In fact, the Chofetz Chaim was once asked, "whathappens if you think nothing?" He answered very pro-foundly: "If one thinks of nothing, then one tastes noth-ing!"

During the week the Jews had the manna but did not real-ize its great potential. The Malbim explains that is why itonly tasted like oily dough. But on Shabbos, a day filledwith sweet relaxation, heavenly thoughts filled the minds ofthe nation. And those sweet thoughts produced sweettastes!

The Talmud also says that to small children the mannatasted like dough, but to scholars it tasted like honey. For ifone thinks of honey, he tastes honey. When one thinksblandly, he has bland taste.

Perhaps on Shabbos the Jewish People realized theimportant lesson of life. The questions we face should notbe addressed as eternally mysterious. We can not face theunknown with the question, "what is it?" Rather, we candefine our destiny and challenge our uncertainties. "It iswhat!" What you put into it is exactly what you take out!Life presents us many opportunities. We can approachthose moments with lofty thoughts and see, smell, andtaste its sweetness. Or we can see nothing and taste noth-ing. We can chop hard and reap the benefits, or we cankvetch and enjoy only the echoes of our emptiness.•

Reuven discovered a very old edition of the Rambam's Mishna Torah amongsome very old Hebrew books that were placed in Genizah for disposal. He sold itto an antique book dealer, Shimon, for $1000. Shimon discovered handwrittennotes on the margin of the Rambam that were signed by the Rema, which madethe actual value of this Rambam $50,000! Is the original sale void, or do we say thatShimon may keep the Sefer and profit?

[Please note that the prices mentioned here are just examples and do not reflectthe actual price for such Sefarim].

When it comes to antiques, since there are so many variables governingthe value of the object being sold, and there is really no clear, set, marketvalue to any one item, in most situations the Halachos of Ona'as Mamon(overpricing) are not applicable, and neither side may void a sale based onthe claim that the item purchased was under or over priced.

However, if, for example, all dealers would pay at least $10,000 for thisitem, but some might pay much more, and the item was sold for less than$10,000, the seller would be permitted to claim that he was underpaid forthe item purchased, and the sale may be voided.

Therefore, in our case, where the Rambam with the Rema's signature is worth at least $10,000 according to all antique book dealers, the sale is void (since it was sold for considerably less than that) andReuven may demand it back. However, he may not demand that Shimon purchase the Rambam for anadditional $49,000, if the dealer has no interest in doing so.

If after purchasing the Rambam, Shimon discovers that only some of the pages are from the Rambam, but it was bound together with another very rare Sefer that greatly increases its value, or that in the bind-ing of the Rambam antique manuscripts were used which also increase the value of the Sefer, andReuven was totally unaware of this, Shimon may keep the Sefer and does not have to inform Reuventhat it was actually worth a lot more than what he sold it for. However, if Reuven had received the Seferas a family inheritance, in this situation the sale would be void and Shimon would have to return it toReuven if Reuven would like to return the money received and get the Sefer back.

Although we stated previously that there generally is no Ona'as Mamon when selling antiques, it isobviously forbidden to sell something that is defective without informing the buyer of the defect. It isalso forbidden to sell an item under the pretense that it is the original, when it is really only a copy. Ifthis should occur, the buyer may void the sale and demand his money back whenever he finds out aboutthis, even if it is many years after the actual sale.

A LETTER

A Jewish attorney in the US responded to my recent article ThePsychology behind Mumbai and Gaza with this message:

“The present situation in Gaza, with the 1.5 million Gazansbeing choked off from medicines and foodstuffs purposefully by theIsraelis, so as to make lives so miserable that they would 'sayUncle' and change government (all the while with Israel carryingout executions of specific individuals in the West Bank and Gazawho they decide, with no court decision or determination by any neu-tral body deserve execution) is an unholy act. The reaction of somein Gaza to shoot homemade rockets is entirely justifiable. Onewould only have wished they could have made such weapons in theWarsaw Ghetto. Now the Israelis, much as the Nazis then, arebombing people in crowded living conditions, in the place with thehighest density of people in the world. And you applaud this.

“As you applaud this, Jews around the world become more andmore reviled and hated for their association with Israel. We arelooked upon as being able to commit evil, and all the while calmlyand coolly justifying it, much as the Nazis of Hannah Arendt’sdescription. The Palestinian people- choked off from goods withwhich to live, to the extent that they have to make tunnels and walkgreat distances underground to get foods and medicines to their peo-ple- are fighting back in the only way they can. Rather than chargeinto the Israeli positions and merely be shot, they make their home-made rockets as they have no other choice. If they ceased doing that,Israeli would STILL view it as their right to choke them off andkill whomever they deemed worth killing.

“Congratulations. You have managed to become just like thosewho killed so many from 1942 to 1945. You are a sick psychopathand I will not read or view your letters. I will delete them all as youhave deleted yourself from humanity. You call yourself a Jew. I ama Jew. You are a rabid animal.”

This letter – like many other voices we are hearingtoday -- is a sad demonstration of how confused somany of our brothers are; how ignorance and misguidedidealism can lead people of good faith to such inhumaneconclusions, as to define the monster as the saint, and thepeople yearning for nothing but a single day of peace asthe Hitler’s living among us.

Is a woman who fights off an attacker to be seen as thecriminal? Israel would not touch Hamas if Hamas wouldstop sending rockets and suicide bombers into Israel.Israel would not erect a single blockade if Hamas and itsallies did not seek to murder every Jew living in the land.Israel seeks to live in peace with its neighbors; Hamasand its allies clearly state that their objective is to destroy

Israel, no matter what Israel does.

My dear brother, may I ask a question: What if your lit-tle children were sitting and playing cards on the porchof your home in New Jersey when a group of gangsterskidnapped one of them and killed five other members ofyour family. These same gangsters then began launchingthousands of rockets on your neighborhood, killing andmaiming children and adults in their homes, in theirschools, parks, shops and businesses. Your children --and thousands of other children -- would not be able tosleep at night. Each moment of their days and nightswould be filled with dread of a sudden, violent death.

What would be the right thing to do? What would bethe appropriate response driven by sanity and compas-sion? What would you expect of your authorities at sucha moment?

Perhaps you'd opt for the choice of sending roses tothe launchers of the rockets, to the kidnappers of theyoungsters and the killers of your family, with a messageof peace. You'd communicate to them how much wewould like to reconcile our differences and reach a stateof mutual respect.

Now, let's say that following these gestures, includingthe fulfillment of their demands to redefine your bor-ders, they continue to fire rockets indiscriminately.Innocent people are being buried. Your foe insists hisgoal is to destroy your entire family and annihilate yourcity. What would you do now?

You may continue to choose to attempt mediation, call-ing for peace and compassion, and continue to reach outwith affection to the launchers of the rockets. Butwouldn't you then, in effect, be assisting their crimesagainst humanity, enabling children to be blown topieces?

If you observed a person about to launch a rocket at aschool filled with children, what would be the moralresponse: to give the launcher an embrace as he shootsthe deadly rocket, or to cut him down on the spot andsave the lives of the children?

Do you feel that the violent and bloody war againstHitler was also a rejection of the higher discourse thatcalls for sanity, peace and human compassion? I suspectthat deep in your heart you know the answer: If the allieshad not engaged the Nazi regime in war, you and I,together with millions of other Jews and innocent peo-ple, would not be here today. Hitler was not stopped

through love; he was defeated through aggression. Andour fight was not an unholy act.

THE GAZA WAR

This is why every moral and compassionate personought to support Israel today. In the past, the Israeli leftand many liberal thinkers preached that the Arab aggres-sion toward Israel was a result of its occupation of Arabland. Give up the territories occupied in the 1967 war, theleft said, and reconciliation will follow.

Gaza was a good experiment. In the summer of 2005,Israel withdrew completely from Gaza. In December2003 Prime Minister Ariel Sharon announced:

“The purpose of the ‘Disengagement Plan’ is to reduceterror as much as possible, and grant Israeli citizens themaximum level of security. The process of disengage-ment will lead to an improvement in the quality of life, and will help strengthen the Israeli economy … Thesesteps will increase security for the residents of Israel andrelieve the pressure on the IDF and security forces in ful-filling the difficult tasks they are faced with. The‘Disengagement Plan’ is meant to grant maximum secu-rity and minimize friction between Israelis andPalestinians.”

Sharon believed, as did so many others, that with not asingle Jew left in Gaza, with the Israeli occupation over, the Arabs living there would now be driven to create abeautiful functioning state for themselves, and securitywould reign for both sides. Alas, the exact oppositeoccurred. Hamas swept over Gaza and turned it into aterrorist state, with a single objective: to destroy Israel.

Since August 2005 there is no more occupation inGaza, not an inch. The result has been increased attackstargeting Israeli civilians, well within their own borders,on a daily basis. What do you expect Israel to do? Not totake any security measures to protect its children frombeing blown up? Not to stop Hamas?

To define this war as state terrorism is not only objec-tively wrong, but also immoral. By demanding restraintfrom Israel, you are demanding that the country allow itschildren to be murdered.

THE CIVILIAN CASUALTIES

Hamas, not Israel, is culpable for the fate of the inno-cent people living in Gaza, whom they hide among andwhose homes and schools they use as bases to launch

rockets, and as ammunition caches. Israel always makessure to distant its war zones from civilian areas; Hamasmakes sure to fight within civilian areas. Israel goes toextraordinary lengths to avoid killing civilians whileHamas does everything in its power to force Israel to killPalestinian civilians by firing its missiles from denselypopulated residential areas and refusing to build sheltersfor its people.

When a murderer takes a hostage and fires from behindhis human shield, and a policeman, in an effort to stopthe shooting accidentally kills the hostage, the law ofevery country holds the hostage taker guilty of murdereven though the policeman fired the fatal shot.

The cry against the tragic civilian casualties in Gaza ishypocritical. Hamas shoots rockets on civilians for years, yet nobody condemns or passes emergency resolutions. When Israel wants to defend itself, Hamas – like all sickmonsters – uses civilians as shields. When Israel targetingHamas, inevitably kills civilians, Hamas screams: Oy vey! They are murdering the innocent! And the world, insteadof blaming Hamas for these tragic casualties, faults Israel.

The strategy of Hamas is as simple as it is cynical:Provoke Israel by firing rockets into Israeli cities andtowns, kindergartens, playgrounds and hospitals; hidebehind its own civilians; refuse to build bunkers; have theTV cameras ready to transmit every image of deadPalestinians, especially children; exaggerate the numberof civilians killed by including as "children" Hamas fight-ers who are 16 or 17 years old and as "women," femaleterrorists. It is a win-win situation: If Israel responds, they will unavoidably hit children, and if they don’t,Hamas can continue to fire.

ON TO VICTORY

During these challenging days, Israel and the Jewishpeople must stand tall and not falter nor sway. A war (andHamas has repeatedly said this is war) is never won if youare disproportionately kind to someone who wants todestroy you and, failing in that, demands with indignationthat you not destroy him. When meeting that enemy, beproportionate.

Israel should not subject its children to death, in orderto please pacifists and Jew haters who will criticize theJewish state regardless. It must not hesitate to take theterrorists down in full force, and ultimately save the livesof innocent human beings - on both sides.•

“Man is a tree of the field,”and the Jewish calen-dar reserves one day each year—the “New Year forTrees” on the 15th of Shevat—for us to contemplate ouraffinity with our botanical analogue and what it can teachus about our own lives.

The tree’s primary components are: the roots, whichanchor it to the ground and supply it with water and othernutrients; the trunk, branches and leaves that comprise itsbody; and the fruit, which contain the seeds throughwhich the tree reproduces itself.

The spiritual life of man also includes roots, a body, andfruit. The roots represent faith, our source of nurture andperseverance. The trunk, branches and leaves are the“body” of our spiritual lives—our intellectual, emotionaland practical achievements. The fruit is our power of spir-itual procreation—the power to influence others, to planta seed in a fellow human being and see it sprout, grow andbear fruit.

ROOTS

The roots are the least “glamorous” of the tree’sparts—and the most crucial. Buried underground, virtu-ally invisible, they possess neither the majesty of the tree’sbody, the colorfulness of its leaves nor the tastiness of itsfruit. But without roots, the tree cannot survive.

Furthermore, the roots must keep pace with the body:if the trunk and leaves grow and spread without a propor-tional increase in its roots, the tree will collapse under itsown weight. On the other hand, a profusion of rootsmakes for a healthier, stronger tree, even if it has a mea-ger trunk and few branches, leaves and fruit. And if theroots are sound, the tree will rejuvenate itself if its bodyis damaged or its branched lopped off.

Faith is the least glamorous of our spiritual faculties.Characterized by a “simple” conviction and commitmentto one’s Source, it lacks the sophistication of the intellect, the vivid color of the emotions, or the sense of satisfac-tion that comes from deed. And faith is buried under-ground, its true extent concealed from others and evenfrom ourselves.

Yet our faith, our supra-rational commitment to G-d, isthe foundation of our entire “tree.” From it stems thetrunk of our understanding, from which branch out ourfeelings, motivations and deeds. And while the body ofthe tree also provides some spiritual nurture (via its“leaves”), the bulk of our spiritual sustenance derives

from its roots, from our faith in and commitment to ourCreator.

A soul might grow a majestic trunk, numerous andwide-spreading branches, beautiful leaves and lush fruit. But these must be equaled, indeed surpassed, by its“roots.” Above the surface, we might behold much wis-dom, profundity of feeling, abundant experience, copiousachievement and many disciples; but if these are notgrounded and vitalized by an even greater depth of faithand commitment, it is a tree without foundation, a treedoomed to collapse under its own weight.

On the other hand, a life might be blessed with onlysparse knowledge, meager feeling and experience, scantachievement and little “fruit.” But if its “roots” are exten-sive and deep, it is a healthy tree: a tree fully in possessionof what it does have; a tree with the capacity to recoverfrom the setbacks of life; a tree with the potential to even-tually grow and develop into a loftier, more beautiful andfruitful tree.

FRUIT

The tree desires to reproduce, to spread its seeds far andwide so that they take root in diverse and distant places. But the tree’s reach is limited to the extent of its ownbranches. It must therefore seek out other, more mobile“couriers” to transport its seeds.

So the tree produces fruit, in which its seeds areenveloped by tasty, colorful, sweet-smelling fibers andjuices. The seeds themselves would not rouse the interestof animals and men; but with their attractive packaging, they have no shortage of customers who, after consum-ing the external fruit, deposit the seeds in those diverseand distant places where the tree wants to plant its seeds.

When we communicate to others, we employ manydevices to make our message attractive. We buttress itwith intellectual sophistication, steep it in emotionalsauce, dress it in colorful words and images. But weshould bear in mind that this is only the packaging, the“fruit” that contains the seed. The seed itself is essential-ly tasteless—the only way that we can truly impact othersis by conveying our own simple faith in what we are tellingthem, our own simple commitment to what we areespousing.

If the seed is there, our message will take root in theirminds and hearts, and our own vision will be grafted intotheirs. But if there is no seed, there will be no progeny toour effort, however tasty our fruit might be.) •

As the Israeli and American people are engulfed in the euphoria of theswearing-in ceremony of America’s 44th president, Barak Obama, the factthat eights mortar rockets were fired at Israel from Gaza today almost wentunnoticed. The secular mainstream media did its best to play down theattacks, briefly reporting ‘ceasefire violations’ while stressing most of therockets landed in Hamas-controlled Gaza.

In Israel, the severity of an attack is measured by its outcome, and intoday’s case, with Hashem deciding the rockets will land short of theirintended target was enough for Israel’s media to proclaim them ‘infrac-tions’, perhaps ‘violations’, nothing more. After all, no one was injured orkilled so in essence, it is as if it never took place.

Perhaps as quickly as America forgets its last president, Israelis will forgetwhat the situation in the south was some three weeks ago, before OperationCast Lead.

The population is apparently too preoccupied with the ceasefire to beconcerned with 8 rocket attacks, not even questioning where the “immedi-ate and stern response” has vanished to. Yes, the air force did fire back abit, but there was no stern response and there was no crushing blow to“restore and ensure our future deterrence” against future unprovoked rock-et attacks against our civilian population centers.

The news on Tuesday night is addressing only one issue, the new Americanpresident. Without dispute, this is a global event but at the end of the day,the obsession with the American leadership seems to serve as a welcomedeterrent from the events that should be occupying our attention, onceagain, permitting Israel’s leaders to divert the national attention away fromthe pressing realities of the unfinished Gaza War.

Ironically, what should draw our attention goes unnoticed in the media, the fact that the theme of the presidential inauguration is synonymous withrecognition of a G-d, a Supreme Ruler and the need for prayer. This aspectof the American pomp-and-ceremony is intentionally shunned, for we must-n’t permit the leaders of the Modern State of Israel to permit themselves toget too carried away with the old ways of yesterday, the tradition that hassustained Am Yisrael throughout the years of golus.

We merited seeing many miracles in Gaza, and those capable of realiz-ing the threats faced by soldiers in Gaza as well as the close to 1 million southern residents. They are livingtestimony to the Divine Intervention that has once again delivered us safely from those who seek to destroyus. To our dismay, our secular leaders who yearn to compel a nation to accept their shallow ways are nowonce again seeking to undo the miracles, day-by-day, and we hope that they will not succeed in their mis-sion, avulsing an entire nation from its current state of loftiness chas v’sholom.

The media will continue selling the ceasefire and its merits, filling Israeli homes with TV visions of Gaza, showing the ‘horrors’ inflicted on the ‘innocent Palestinians’ by the IDF as they sought to snuff out theenemy. It is truly sad that a nation has reached a point where the propaganda machine of a barbaricenemy penetrates their hearts on a deeper level than the suffering of brothers and sisters, who for eightyears have endured, paying a heavy price, and today, almost merited being delivered from that evil foebut were prevented from doing so by their own leaders.

20 MINUTES, TURNING ONCE, THEN BASTE WITH ABOUT HALF OF THE VINAIGRETTE AND KEEP COOKING

UNTIL AN INSTANT-READ THERMOMETER STUCK INTO THE THICKEST PART OF THE THIGH READS 160DEGREES F AND THE CHICKEN IS NICE AND CARAMELISED ALL OVER, 15 TO 20 MORE MINUTES. DURING

THE LAST FEW MINUTES, THROW THE LEMON HALVES ON THE GRILL, CUT SIDES DOWN, AND COOK UNTIL

JUST MARKED AND SMOKY.

TO SERVE, SEPARATE THE RADICCHIO INTO INDIVIDUAL LEAVES IN A BIG BOWL. ADD THE CHICKEN AND

THE REST OF THE DRESSING AND TOSS WELL. SERVE WITH GRILLED LEMON HALVES, SQUEEZE THE LEMON

OVER THE CHICKEN, AND TOP WITH RESERVED DRESSING.
