Devarim 7:17 When you will say there are too many nations how can we defeat them? The definition of bitachon is often misunderstood. Rav Mattisyahu Salomon shlita pointed out that many mistakenly believe that bitachon means belief that things will turn out the way that you want. However this is incorrect. Bitachon means that one should not rely on probabilities or statistics, but we must put our trust and reliance in HaShem. Life’s lesson: Bitachon means trust that God knows what He is doing Mitzvos are not commandments they are opportunities Devarim 11:13 If you will listen to my mitzvos. This section of the shema is known as Kabbolas HaMitzvos. Why do we need to accept the Mitzvos if we already accept the yoke of Heaven in the first section of Shema? Rav Moshe Feinstein z”l ex- plained that while the responsibility to do mitzvos does indeed come with the acceptance of the yoke of heaven, God wants us to also develop the love of doing the mitzvos and perform them from love and not from fear. Life’s lesson: Mitzvos are opportunities to show our love of God Stand up for your rights Devarim 11:25 No person shall stand in front of you The reason we refer to tefilla as amidah is that although it might seem logical that a person should completely subjugate himself before God, this is not what God wants. He does not want us to lose our identity. He wishes for us to be strong and independent. When we come to pray in this manner it should be out of choice and not out of compulsion or fear. Life’s lesson: Stand up like a man even before God It takes two to tango Yeshayahu 50:2 Why did I come and there was no man? Brochos 6b explains that this refers to when HaShem comes to a shul and doesn’t find ten men there. Rav Schwab z”l explained that if an opportunity presents itself in life for some measure of self-improvement, and a person does not take it, it is a disappointment to HaShem. Yeshiah is telling us that God gave us many chances for a meeting of the minds, but felt that He was the only one putting in the effort. Life’s lesson: Do not miss an opportunity for growth Good Shabbos, Rabbi Cohen

    Short Vort – Toras Chaim

    Believe it!

Devarim 7:17 When you will say there are too many nations how can we defeat

them? The definition of bitachon is often misunderstood. Rav Mattisyahu Salomon

shlita pointed out that many mistakenly believe that bitachon means belief that

things will turn out the way that you want. However this is incorrect. Bitachon

means that one should not rely on probabilities or statistics, but we must put our

trust and reliance in HaShem. Life’s lesson: Bitachon means trust that God knows what He is doing

Halachic Bulletin - Tu b’av is the tikun for Tisha b’Av

Tu b’av is compared to Yom Kippur because it was also a day of forgiveness. These days were regarded as times of holiness and purification, and therefore they were

days of rejoicing and shidduchim, and there was no concern for lack of tznius. Every Tisha b’Av after the report of the spies in the second year, 15,000 Jews died in the

Midbar. The majority died on Tisha b’Av. They dug their graves and lay down in them, and the next day those who were spared, rose and continued their journey. In the 40th year they all rose on the morning of the 10th of Av. They thought that they may have miscalculated the date, but when they saw the full moon on 15th

Av, they knew that the decree had ended.

On this day later in history, daughters who inherited, could now get married to a male outside her tribe.

On this day also the oath taken by the Jewish people, not to marry their daughters to men from the tribe of Binyomin after the incident of pilegesh baGivah, was

    revoked.

On this day Yerovam ben Navot set up two calves in Dan and Be’er Sheva. He placed road blocks to prevent people from going up to Yerushalayim. It was like the

Berlin Wall. These remained in place until the end of the kingdom of Israel under Hoshea ben Elah.

On this day permission was received to bury the slain at Betar on this day.

Tu b’Av is the last day of planting for the year which extends to Rosh HaShana in regards to shmitta and orla. The tree needs 14 days to take root and 30 days to be

    considered a year.

When Ezra and Nechemia went up to Eretz Yisroel the land was desolate and de-nuded of trees. They lacked wood for the altar. Anyone who provided wood was

also permitted to bring a korban called the wood offering, which was brought with great joy. The enemies of the Jews tried to block the roads to prevent them from

coming. The last donation of wood to the Temple was made on this day each year. The reason for this was that the sun’s strength begins to wane after this day, and

would not dry out the cut wood quickly enough, before worms enter and render it invalid. Alternatively, a complete opposite view holds that from this day the weath-er got hotter, allowing them to cut wood for the altar, which is a great mitzvah and

    a reason to celebrate.

Rabbenu Gershom explains that once the wood chopping was over, there was more time for learning Torah. Consider how little time and how few people were

involved in this wood chopping, yet for the small amount of additional Torah which could be studied after this day, Chazal ordained a holiday. Chazal say, "One who

studies more Torah after the 15th of Av--and especially at night--will have reward added."

The world was created on 25th Tishri. Forty days prior to the birth of a baby, a Heavenly voice announces that 'so and so's daughter will marry so-and-so!' Ha-Shem created the world to rule over it, and 'there is no King without a people'. Consequently, the true purpose of the creation was for the sake of Israel’s mar-

riage to HaShem, to declare His rulership to the world. If one calculates forty days back from the Creation on 25th Tishri, one arrives at 15th Av. That is the day on which Hashem announced that Yisrael would 'marry' Him, and that is why, since

15th Av prior to the Creation, Tu b'Av has been 'mesugal' (particularly apt) for shiduchim.
