One plus one = one
Devarim 4:29 “And you (pl.) will seek HaShem from there and you (sing.) will
find Him…” Why does the verse begin with a plural verb “seek” and end with
a singular verb “find”? Vilna Gaon noted that there are two types of people
who seek HaShem, but only the one who davens to Him with pure intent will
be successful in finding the proper answer. Meshech Chochma adds that
when we are attached to HaShem we become one with each another.
Life lesson: When I am attached to HaShem I can feel one with you
Giving and receiving
Devarim 6:7 “and you will teach your sons”
Rav Simcha Wasserman z”l noted that Rav Yerucham Levovitz z”l. once told
him that the statement in Pesachim 112a, that “more than the calf wants to
nurse the cow wants to give it to nurse” is only true if there is a relationship
between the cow and the calf. If there is no relationship, then the cow is just
expressing milk and is not interested in the proper amounts the calf needs.
The same is true in education. It is not about what the teacher wants to give
as much as it is, the ability of the teacher to understand the capacity of the
student and wanting to meet it not exceed it.
Life lesson: Whenever you seek to impart information you need to be aware
of the capacity to receive
Be a light unto yourself
Devarim 4:6 For this (statutes) is your wisdom in the eyes of the nations
Are the gentiles really impressed with the fact that we do not wear shatnez
or eat chazir? Do we really care what they think? Is our goal to impress
them?
As a result of our commitment to and performance of mitzvos, our character
will undergo an improvement which will show the world we are a special
people. This in turn will inspire us to be a light unto the nations.
Life lesson: First change yourself then you will change others
Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Cohen

HALACHIC BULLETIN
Kiddush Levana
Tsafas Paneach The Beis HaMikdash was destroyed on Motsei
Shabbos and immediately the Shechina went into exile, hence we
should be “mekabel pnei Shechina” at this time. If Motzei Shab-
bos is after the tenth of the month, we might have a concern that
there will be four consecutive days of cloud, and the opportunity
will be lost, therefore we are mekadesh at the earliest opportuni-
ty.
Ramo We are not mekadesh before Yom Kippur. The reason is
that we are apprehensive due to the upcoming judgment. On
motsei Yom Kippur we are happy at the outcome.
Biur Halacha held that it was preferred to be mekadesh before
Yom Kippur to merit another mitzva.
Aruch HaShulchan Due to the concept of "z'rizim makdimim" - a
desire to perform mitzvos at the earliest opportunity or “shema
yamoos" – we might not survive to make the brocho, it is not
worthwhile to wait.
Ramo holds not to be mekadesh before Tisha B'Av. The reason is
that we are in a state of mourning. Even on motzei Tisha b'Av we
still do not do kiddush levona as we have not eaten, and are not
wearing our best clothes and shoes, and we need to be in a state
of simcha. Perhaps that is why we do it on motzei Shabbos.
Many Sefardim and Chassidim are mekadesh on Motsei Tisha
b’Av
Rabbi Simcha Weinberg would like to invite anyone who
wishes to participate in his tefillah project—Partners in
Prayer. Please let us know if you would be interested in
participating and if you would be interested in a pre-High
Holiday zoom session with Rabbi Simcha Weinberg, Elcho-
non Cohen, Rabbi Shlomo Seidenfeld, and Rabbi Moshe
Cohen
