PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Last week, we had as speaker Gift of Life International (GOLI) Chief Executive Officer Rob Raylman, a good friend of the Club who has been working closely with us over the past 6 or 7 years on one of the Club’s flagship projects, the Gift of Life (GOL) Program. Rob reminded us of the worldwide program’s mission statement – “to provide hope to children with heart disease from developing countries, regardless of gender, creed or national origin, supporting autonomous GOL Programs (such as RCMW’s) in an effort to care for children in need and to coordinate the development of sustainable pediatric surgery, catheterization and aftercare programs in select countries through the empowerment of local healthcare professionals.

The Program’s vision statements are: 1. Transform the lives of children with heart disease and their families by coordinating the collaboration of autonomous GOL programs with likeminded partner charities, hospitals, healthcare professionals, Rotarians and other volunteers; 2. To develop sustainable pediatric cardiac surgery, catheterization and aftercare programs in emerging countries. These shall be undertaken by integrating all elements of proper healthcare for the children, with special attention to nutrition and humanized care training of healthcare professionals and parents which is undertaken with full respect for the role of local governments, medical teams and hospital administrators. It is heartening to note that RCMW’s very own President Nominee (PN) Luis (Lou) del Rosario, Jr. is a member of the Board that supervises the implementation of the vision and mission statements through 76 GOL programs spanning 5 continents and 78 countries – the Philippines has four GOL programs, namely, RCMW, RC Cebu West, GOL Manila RD3790 and GOL Philippines RD7255.

GOLI has four (4) core program countries (Uganda, El Salvador, Jamaica and Romania) with criteria for selection being: 1) Supportive and invested government; 2) Motivated and involved hospital administration; 3) Established pediatric cardiac surgery program; and 4) Existing in-country, non-governmental organization to support the program. The Philippines, through RCMW’s GOL program that has been running for the past 12

years and has now operated on 434 patients (and counting) meets three of the four criteria for selection – by next year, under the leadership of Director Paul Daza and GOLI Director/RCMW PN Lou del Rosario, we should be able to address the first criterion, namely, supportive and invested government. In the coming weeks/months, more details shall be provided as the program is further fleshed out and strengthened/institutionalized.

RCMW’s Alay Sining Project, with the theme, Art with a Heart, is an all-sculpture art exhibition that was conceptualized by the late National Artist for Architecture Design and Allied Arts and RCMW Charter Member and Past President, Ildefonso (I.P.) Santos, who believed that “Alay Sining” would be the means to bring in the funds for the “Gift of Life” program.

Sculptors in particular, extend their help generously through their sculptures. Their generosity to impart their art is their way to share their heart and treasure for the patients on queue with CHD. Artists give a major portion and at times totally contribute their artworks to provide the means for patients to undergo free heart surgery. Among the artists who have maintained their support is National Artist for Sculpture, Napoleon Abueva, and National Artist for Visual Arts, Arturo Luz, Ramon Orlina, Ferdie Cacnio, Glenn Cagandahan, Joe Datuin, Raul Funilas, Merlito Gepte, Sam Penaso, Jaime Nepomuceno, Jojit Nagamos, Adel Agubang, Jinggoy Buensuceso, Kenneth Cobonpue, and many more.

The contribution of Alay Sining was recognized by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP) which gave a Silver to Alay Sining during the ANVIL Awards of the Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP). This achievement is shared with the visual artists, medical practitioners, RCMW members and the many supporters who have assisted in bringing over 434 surgeries to Filipino Children through the Gift of Life program (both Alay Sining and Gift of Life are RCMW programs that have been running for many years).

Congratulations to Director Eric Tensuan and Rtn. Tonito Payumo for their awards won at the Esquire Golf Tournament, Wack Wack Golf and Country Club.

Finally, I wish all a prayerful and contemplative Holy Week.

Alay Sining 8 wins Silver at PRSP Anvil AwardsMakati Shangri-La March 10, 2017

The 8th Alay Sining Sculpture Exhibit-Sale organized annually by the Rotary Club of Makati West (RCMW) won a silver at the glittering gala night of the 52nd Anvil Awards hosted by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines on March 10, 2017. The Anvil Awards is the PR industry’s equivalent of the Oscars awards, given in recognition of excellent public relations practice, programs and tools. Alay Sining was awarded the silver ANVIL AWARD for excellent communications management in the non-profit category. The Rotary Club of Makati West has managed to hold the Alay Sining exhibit-salefor thebenefit of Gift of Life beneficiaries consisting of children with chronic heart disease (CHD) with increasing success year after year, through nine (9) Club Presidents, since the launch of Alay Sining in 2007. The number of participating sculptors grew from just 20 when it started, to 114 artists in 2016, each contributing one or more artworks. This translated to more funds raised for the heart operations for babies and children with congenital heart disease. By end 2016, the Rotary Club of Makati West has provided for the operation of 434 patients, translating to about P400 million worth of surgeries since the start of the Gift of Life program in 2004. With minimal funds available for publicity efforts, Alay Sining 8, with the help of DDB Group Philippines, under the leadership of Gil Chua, President and CEO (concurrently RCMW Director) was able to generate media coverage amounting to P9.1 million.

Art with a heart

The biggest sculpture exhibit and sale in the Philippines organized by the RCMW Alay Sining raises funds for the benefit of the children under the Gift of Life (GOL) program, an initiative that helps children with CHD undergo surgery and medication. With the theme “Art with A Heart,” Alay Sining 8 once more had artists share their talents through their sculptures for children with CHD during the four-day exhibit-sale held at The Gallery, Greenbelt 5, Makati City. Annually, the art-for-a cause exhibit gives an opportunity for over a hundred local artists as they graciously showcase their masterpieces to the public with a heart to help. One of the major projects of both RCMW and Rotary International, the Gift of Life’s core objective is to save the lives of as many children as possible who are suffering from congenital heart defect. To deepen awareness about congenital heart disease and the Gift of Life program, with the hope of raising funds for heart surgeries for children belonging to indigent families, diagnosed with congenital heart disease, the Rotary Club of Makati West launched the annual “Alay Sining” art exhibit for a cause in 2007. Alay Sining’s participating artists contribute their artworks and donate a large portion of the sales proceeds to the GOL program. In 2016, Alay Sining marked its ninth year (thus Alay Sining 9) of partnering with leading and budding sculptors of the country with two-pronged objectives: - To deepen awareness and raise more funds for the RCMW’s signature Gift of Life program, which helps indigent families access heart surgery for their young members suffering from congenital heart disease. - To promote the Philippine sculptural art form by increasing patronage of locally produced artworks.

All told, the Alay Sining project of the Rotary Club of Makati West is a prime example of how non-profit organizations like Rotariy can generate significant public awareness and support humanitarian projects through their members’ deep passion and commitment for their cause, coupled with the proper and effective use of PR.

Receiving the awards on behalf of RCMW were President Ruy Moreno, Past President Ed Balois, Past President Dennis Decena, Director Gil Chua and Anna Gil-Norbert.
