Principal News with Mr George Frangos

Learning Management and Business Reform (LMBR) Training for several staff members has commenced at Gunnedah for the implementation of LMBR which will occur later in the year. The entire Department of Education

is in the process of implementing a modern, integrated IT system in human resources, payroll, finance and student administration to provide better service and value to staff, students, parents and the community. It will impact on every facet of the school. Education Week Thank you to everyone who attended and assisted with Coolah Central School Education Week Celebrations last Thursday. I would also like to acknowledge the P & C who organized a fantastic morning tea. Each year during Education Week Coolah Central School presents awards to students

who have demonstrated outstanding citizenship and school spirit. One student from each year group was selected for their contribution to the school and the community. Congratulations to all students who received certificates. The talents demonstrated by the Year 9 and 10 students who performed a musical item with Mr Snell and the Year 5 and 6 students who performed Pachelbels Canon with Mr Hughes were outstanding. Entering School Grounds Visitors (including parents, carers and volunteers) are not to enter the school grounds without first signing in at the administration office. Visitors are required to sign out when leaving the school grounds. Visitors are not to enter the playground or go to the classrooms during class time, or at lunch or recess time. If they wish to bring their child’s recess or lunch to school, it must be left at the office and delivery will be arranged.

Deputy News with Mr Winston Hughes

Congratulations to all students who participated in the Education Week celebrations last Thursday and a big thank you to parents who attended for their support. This week is also a busy week with Year 10 Work Experience, Year 11

Hospitality Work Placement and North-West Secondary Athletics now on Tuesday after having been rained out last week. I’d like to remind students and parents of our mobile phone policy. Students are not to use mobile phones between 8.45am and 3.15 pm at Coolah Central School. If students need to contact home for any reason they are to go to the front office where staff will assist them. If a student is seen using a phone it will be confiscated and kept securely in the front office until a parent is available to pick it up. The only exception to this will be if a student is using a mobile phone for an educational purpose in class after been given explicit instructions from a teacher to do so. An example of this may be to video an experiment in Science to be able to watch it back in slow motion to record the results. The second semester often heralds blocks of examinations or assessments for students. Especially our senior students. Some students cope well with the pressure and stress while others find it overwhelming. Of course, the more prepared students are, the less stress they are likely to experience. Encourage students to start their preparation for examinations and assessments early, in particular their study notes. If your student has examination blocks this semester, these tips will help you provide the support they need. 1. Lifestyle makes a big difference to results: healthy eating, lots of water, lots of sleep, exercise and time for relaxation are essential. Make sure students are eating as healthily as possible. Provide healthy snacks and drinks and healthy meals. It is important that students look after their health during this period as stress can take a huge toll on the body. A nutritious diet and a bit of exercise not only help students think more effectively, but will help them deal with stress as well. Some students will try and sacrifice sleep during this time, remind them that the last stage of memory takes place while students

are sleeping. 2. Ask students what they need from you and what you can do. Offer to help with revision, to go and buy any books or stationery needed. Be their personal assistant and help with exam timetables, preparation, lunches etc. Many on the material they need to memorise. 3. Focus on a positive outlook and personal best: encourage students to be proud of their successes and what they achieve and constantly assure them that all you want is for them to do the best they can and walk away feeling proud of their efforts this year. Praise the effort they put into their study. Avoid criticism and negativity. Remember there are always multiple paths in life for your student to get to where they want to go. 4. Keep communication lines open. Listen. See if you can have a weekly meeting to give students a chance to talk through where they are with each subject and what is going on and if they are having any difficulties. Remember that you are the convenient target for anger (that isn’t really directed at you) but you also might be a good shoulder to cry on. Seek professional help if you feel your student is not coping and needs it. 5. If students are stressed or worried, first let them vent, then talk together ways they could approach their issues. Who could they talk to at school on ways to improve or ways to manage their stress? What outside resources do they have? What is it they feel most anxious about? Is there specific help they need? What can parents do to help? You and your student can learn more about how to study effectively at www.studyskillshandbook.com.au by logging in with the details below and working through some of the units. Our class captains for this week are Georgie and Blake. Our Homework unit is Unit 21 and our new sight words are be, one, two, house, inside and outside. We will also be learning the sounds “q” and “ou”. Home reading will continue as normal. It has been great to see so many children reading regularly at home as this extra practising definitely makes a difference. I am looking forward to seeing more Home Reading Record books though as there are still some students who have not handed their books in with completed levels for some time. In Maths this week we will be looking at patterns, the numbers from 17 to 20, 3D objects and mass and in Literacy we will continue developing our reading and writing skills by looking at a variety of Aboriginal Dreamtime stories. In History and Geography we will be discovering what art and music tell us about the past of Indigenous Australians and in Science we will be discussing

how the weather affects us. Tomorrow we will be doing some Aboriginal cooking with Mrs Rawlinson and we are really excited about this. Congratulations go to Milly O’Neill who received the Citizenship Award for Kindergarten last week. There were lots of worthy recipients for this award and it was a very difficult choice, but well done Milly. You were very deserving of this prestigious award. Please send in a drink of water and some extra fruit each day for our sip and crunch. Tuesday– Parent/Teacher Interviews. Wednesday– Library Thankyou to all parents, grandparents and friends who came and visited us last week at our Education Week celebrations. It was really wonderful to see you all.

Year 2/3 News with Mrs Ferguson & Miss Frazer

We had a fantastic Week 3 and I am excited heading into Week 4 this week! A huge congratulations to Year 5/6 students and Year 9 students who along with Mr Hughes and Mr Snell, performed

two outstanding music pieces at our school’s Education Week Assembly last Thursday! It was a joy to watch you perform! As always, please remember to send in a piece of fruit or some vegetables with your child each day so that they can enjoy Sip ‘n’ Crunch. Please ‘Save the Date’ and keep an eye out in upcoming newsletters for the Father’s Day Breakfast we will be holding on Monday September 4th. Fathers and Grandfathers are welcome to come along. Homework Contract for this week is 22. It is wonderful to see so many students bringing in their homework each week! I am very proud of the effort you are putting in to extend your learning beyond the classroom. Well done to these students who handed in homework last week; Matilda Dunbier, Zoe Richard, Amber Thomas, Kobi Olyve, Evan O’Neill, Dawson Packham, Harry Schneider, Sophia Bradley, Claudia Dunlop, Jessi Edwards, Libby Nolan, Sam Schneider and Ryan Johnstone! Our sound for the week is ‘ar’ as in star and ‘a’ as in ‘glass’. English:- We continue on with Poetry, this week will delve into exploring Banjo Paterson. We are loving his poetry so far!

Geography:- We are learning about the different types of maps and exploring the used of compasses! Please ask your students about N,E,S and W! Science:- We are continuing to look at living things and how we can classify these. We are also investigating what experiments we could do to test if an object is living or non-living. Each week I like to put the names of students who improved their spelling results in the test on Friday. This week I am overwhelmed at how many students got 100% or improved on their last week results! Super Spellers for Week 3 are; Evan O’Neill, Isabella Parry, Kade Bennett, Zoe Richard, Elke Cox, Ryan Johnstone, Chloe Hanson, Libby Nolan, Claudia Dunlop, Jessi Edwards, Eryka-Lee Elwell, Sam Schneider, Lakkita Moffat and Henry Goldman. Keep it up 2/3! A huge congratulations to Elke Cox who received the Year 2 Citizenship Award at the Education Week Assembly. What a great day we had on Thursday celebrating Education Week. Thank you to all of visitors for taking the time to come along to our open classrooms. Congratulations to Ben Young who received our Year 3 Citizenship Award.

Zone Athletics is this Friday in Coonabrarabran, good luck to those students travelling over for this event. SPELLING: This week’s spelling focus is based around the sound ‘s’ as in seal, ‘ss’ as in kiss, ‘se’ as in mouse, ‘ce’ juice, ‘x’ as in fox and ‘c’ as in pencil. Spelling lists went out today and the weekly test will be on Friday. Super spellers from last week were: Geoffrey, Jack, Tia, Seth, Lachie, Alice, Ben, Bonnii, Milly, Clare and Sid. LITERACY: We are looking at Poetry in writing. This unit lends itself well to the Focus on Reading lessons where we are looking more deeply into all styles of poetry, the features of poems, the reasons for poems and how they are written. HOME READING: A reminder to all students that reading at home is a very important part of the learning process. Each student should be reading at home for at least 15 minutes a day either aloud or silently, all forms of reading

are advantageous. Reading is the most integral part of all literacy work as it helps to build on vocabulary, spelling, comprehension and also writing. YEAR THREE MATHS: We have completed our unit on Whole Number. This week we will move onto Fractions and Decimals. Students should still, at home, continue revising their known and new times tables as this will aid their learning in this area greatly. They need to know and remember 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 10x and 11x tables. SCIENCE: Our unit for this term is on ‘Materials’. This unit looks into what things are made of, also how those materials are created and what properties those material have. HISTORY: Our unit for this term is the ‘Arrival of the First Fleet’. In this unit we will delve further into why the First Fleet was sent to Australia, what the First Fleet was and also the impact the arrival of the Fleet had on Australia. HOMEWORK: Homework went home today, Unit 22 is to be completed and brought back in on Friday.

Year 5/6 News with Mrs Wesley

What a great week we had for Education Week, particularly last Thursday with open classes and the 2017 Education Week Assembly. Thank you very much to all parents, grandparents, carers and friends that visited our classroom. I know

the students really enjoyed being able to share their work with you all. A huge congratulation goes to Thomas Burgess and Jessica Sternbeck, who received the Citizenship Awards for Year 4 and Year 5; both students being extremely worthy recipients. A big congratulations also to all other award recipients on the day. Tuesday this week is parent teacher interviews. I look forward to meeting with many parents to discuss your child’s progress. If you haven’t secured yourself a time and would like to it would be best to contact the front office to determine what times are still available. This Friday is Zone Athletics. Good luck to all those students who are participating and representing our school. SPELLING: Our spelling focus for this week will be ‘s’ as in ‘seal’, ‘ss’, as in ‘kiss, ‘se’, as in ‘mouse’,

‘ce’ as in ‘juice’ x(ks) as in ‘fox’ and ‘c’ as in ‘pencil’. Our super spellers for last week were: Phoebe, Indiana, Isabelle, Lachlan, Grace, Kane, Hallam, Rhianna, Adysen, James, Tom, Isaac and Cooper. WOW! What a week of great spelling! YEAR FOUR MATHS: We have been working through our multiplication facts and I can tell that some students have been working hard to learn their times tables facts at home. Please keep practising and revising 2’s, 3’s, 4’s, 5’s, ‘6’s, 8’s and 10’s, as this will certainly help them when we move on to mental multiplication and written strategies later in this term. HOMEWORK: Thank you to everyone who hands in their homework each and every week. Homework completion is worth x2 PBL’s. Contract 20 needs to be completed this week and returned is due in by Friday. If you are away at Athletics on Friday, your homework is due in by Thursday I’m looking forward to another great week of learning in 4/5 because as the Education Week theme says ‘I learn, We learn!
