I love this practice of lighting the candles and/or turning the bulbs, when Jews literally add more light to the world each night that Chanukah progresses. Biblically, we have been commanded to be a “light unto the nations” (Isaiah 42:6), and I like the metaphor of bringing more light into the world during the darkest time of the year. In the past year-and-change, I believe that much of the light we have brought to the world has been found in the light others are bringing to us. The world’s response to the tragedy of 10/27 generated a del- uge of caring in every possible way. In the past few months, one credible threat against the Jewish community of Butler and one anti-semitic hate crime have come to our attention. When I shared this with the Butler Interfaith Ministerium that was created in the wake of 10/27, the response was swift and heartwarming. A beautiful letter of support was written by a member of the Ministerium, with the rest of the priests, pastors and ministers signing it. It appeared in the Butler Eagle, our local newspaper, in the Editorial section. Members have offered to “stand guard” for us at our services. We are working to plan a Friday night service at B’nai Abraham, where Christian congregants and pastors will come to show their respect for our faith. This light of love and caring is still burning brightly in Butler. A teaching in Chapter 5 of the Pirke Avot, the Wisdom of Our Fathers, makes its clear that it is a mitzvah to allow others to do a kindness for you; conversely, it is a sin to refuse that kindness. Receiving the good deeds of all those who have been moved to do so is what the Holy One wants of us. It is dis- couraging to find that anti-semitism is still with in, but at least it has allowed us to feel the unprecedented support of our non-Jewish neighbors. Dear Friends,Yesterday, I sadly took down the electric chanukiah that always shines in my front window, and

carefully packed the glass bulbs and put them away until next year. I also worked on getting the wax off the chanukiah my husband and I had on our kitchen table, including running it under warm water to loosen the wax.

The world’s response to the tragedy of 10/27 generated a del-uge of caring in every possible way. I am reminded daily of this as I pass Tree of Life/ Or L’Simcha syna-gogue on my way to and from work, and see the school children’s artwork that hangs on the chain-link fence surrounding the still-closed building. This touching support in its various forms from our gentile neighbors will be well known to you.

This support hasn’t waned, as recent events will show.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Religious school  has been busy since our last bulletin.  In October,  our students participated in a memorial service for the 11 victims of the Tree of Life shootings. We lit candles and read a short memory of each victim.  Jonah, Josh and John continue to say Kaddish for members of both our Butler and  Kittanning congregations. We are trying something different at Religious School.  As this may be our last year, I have tried to bring more "learning through doing" experiences to our students.  In November,  we had mem-bers and former members speak to us about why and what Judaism means to them.  I want to thank Chris Hood, Phil Terman, Katie Riggs, Janice Dunmire, Howard and Meg Kossover, Cantor Michal, and Zach and Lori Doerr for participating in our 3 week program. It was a valuable insight into people's commitment to their Judaism. Everyone who attended enjoyed the talks! In December all three boys tried their hand at sufganyot~jelly donuts ~for Chanukah! We had lots of fun, made a wonderful  mess and shared many  memories of previous cooking experiences! Jonah, azoy, azoy, azoy!! In the new year, we have volunteers coming to bake their favorite Jewish dish with our students! Our Mitzvah project  during November and December was collecting underware and sweatpants for our local elementary schools.  This was requested by the school nurses. A huge thank you to Ben Vincent for helping me fill 150 baggies with candies and "Snow-man  Soup" poems for our Weekend Backpack Program. There are over 350 students at the ele-mentary level who receive a bag of food each Friday  to help them through the weekend. I am amazed at how compassionate these 3 boys are towards complete strangers. They see or hear of a need, and step right up to help. True Menches. I think i can speak for the entire congre-gation when I say how proud of them we are. They truly teach us what Tikum Olam really means.

I hope that 2020 brings everyone much peace, love, good food  shared with love one and many great memories.

Roberta

Notes from the

Neshamah:

A Poetry Moment with Phil

If We Were as Brilliant as Groundhogs

We know these are the shortest days: late dark, early dark, we’ve adjusted in our own fashions to the degrees of gray, maneuvering down icy roads

to spend hours in dusty rooms reciting the literature of our complaints. But now the clouds have decided to disperse and the pre-dawn moon re-appears,

having experimented with how long we could live without it, like a lover vanishing into an inexplicable privacy, or a God who needs the reassurance

That we are unable to live without Him. Yes, that’s what the light is for us: we can take its absence only so far. At first we rejoiced in its leave-taking,

its daily requirements of radiance, glarings and exposures, its requisite pleasures, the burden of beauty’s full view, content to bear what our new lives require:

turning inward, taking deliberate steps, the deeper silences, sudden distances, mist gathering and receding, monochrome and framed, objects blurring into themselves:

trees into sky, water into field, the sudden bursts of snowfall from the place the stars were. And the flashflames of the smaller gods who carry what remains of light: blue jay

and cardinal, red-headed woodpecker, red-streaked finch, enough to keep most happy, reminders of what once was the harbingers of what will come again.

But for others it’s not enough—a flick of an occasional flight is only a gesture, some cosmic mockery meant to tease or test their resolve for just how much

they can stand, stuck in their houses, relying on their own inner resources. If we were a brilliant as groundhogs we’d sleep through it, sink deeply

into the muddy caves of our own bodies and dream the dream of the inactive, practicing for our own deaths, suspending almost completely our blood, like the waters

of this immediate earth, until the stirring, as now, the prodigal light roaring across the horizon, blinding us in its harsh return, daring us once again back into our own lives.

Announcing the 2020 Purimschpiel!

The 1987 movie, “The Princess Bride,” became a cult favorite. This year, we will be doing “The Jewish Princess Bride” for our annual Purimschpiel on Friday, March 13 at the annual Purim Service. A non-musical, it calls for a varied cast of villains, heroes, a giant, princess, pi-rate, witch, wizard, and more fun and zany characters. Sword fights, ROUSes (Rodents of un-usual size), a poison game - how will Cantor M fit all these into the Purim story? Will she use the famous lines from the movie?:

.....As you wish.....Inconceivable!Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.I’m not a witch! I’m your wife!Goodbye, boys. Have fun storming the castle!

It would be a good idea to watch the movie to see how charming it is and how funny the lines are.

We’re looking for a cast of Religious School students and adults. Rehearsals will be held on Sundays after Religious School, 12:30 - 2p.m., starting January 25. Not everyone will be called every week. Rehearsals will last longer when it’s closer to the performance.

Please contact Cantor Michal at [email protected] with your interest. She promises a riotous good time will be had by all!
