AJ is hosting ‘Mitzvah Together’, a day featuring two events that not only serve our community, but

also fulfill two of the four Mitzvot of Purim: Mishloach Manot and Matanot L’Evyonim!

AJ’S Annual Hamentaschen Bake

Our second annual Hamentaschen Bake provides a family-friendly opportunity to fulfill the mitzvah of “Mishloach Manot” – sending gifts of food.

Enjoy a fun afternoon of creative hamentaschen baking at AJ! Learn to make these scrumptious goodies, and take some home with you! Hamentaschen will also be given to residents of nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. Kids get to decorate creative cards and gift bags!

Cost is only $5 per family.

Fiction novel in 1993. The novel examines gender roles, human identity and artificial intelligence, political economy, environmentalism, love, and storytelling through a suspenseful plot, set in post-apocalyptic America … The main plot is interwoven with the story of Rabbi Judah Loew … who uses Kabbalah to create a golem to protect the Prague Jewish ghetto around 1600. The two stories are mutually illuminating, both asking what it means to be human, both from the perspective of the man-made life, and that of those who love the artificial lives. A MESSAGE FROM RABBI ROBERT B. SLOSBERG

We did it again! In 2010, AJ members helped raise the funds to reunite a remarkable former Sudanese refugee in Louisville, Gabriel Kwai, with his wife and daughter who were stuck in Sudan. Gabriel was one of the courageous “Lost Boys of Sudan” who fled by foot

through the desert to escape the slaughter and destruction in his village. Gabriel shared his moving story with us at AJ’s 2009 Selichot service, and we learned that he had never seen or held his daughter. Even though Gabriel never asked for help, I pledged to him on the spot (while holding back tears) that we would do whatever it would take to reunite him with his family.

AJ warmly welcomed Gabriel and his family when they arrived in the USA in 2010. We provided them with food and clothing. His daughter, Agotich attended our preschool. Later, when they welcomed their second daughter, Anyieth, she was also educated in our preschool. The love we showered on them was a thing of beauty. This was the mitzvah of “Pidyon Sh’vuyim”- Redeeming Captives and “Pikuach Nefesh” - Saving a life.

Since that time, Gabriel and his wife have welcomed a third daughter, Anun, and they are living happily together in Louisville. Gabriel is an Assistant Manager at the Highland’s Kroger store. He is a man with a big heart and is a mentsch. He is a modest hero in our very midst.

In 2015, I learned of another “Lost Boy of Sudan” – a man named Martin Nihal who was working at Jewish Hospital as a surgical tech. He had a wife and three young daughters who were stuck in Uganda. He had not seen them in four years! $10,000 was needed to get them out of Uganda, and safely to Louisville to be with Martin. Working with Jewish Hospital, the “Adath Jeshurun Pikuach Nefesh Fund of the Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Foundation” was created to raise the needed funds to reunite Martin with his family.

AJ members were extremely generous in their giving, and I am pleased to announce that with your support, Martin’s family arrived in Louisville on December 16, 2017. Martin’s exuberance at having his family back is a joyous sight to

behold! Martin reports that his family is adjusting well. The biggest adjustment so far has been in experiencing cold weather, which is brand new to them. Martin is extremely appreciative of your generosity in bringing about this miracle. I recently asked Martin what he needs. As a humble man, Martin responded: “I have everything I need – I have my family.” However, we know that the family arrived in Louisville with nothing, and that they have the same needs as we all do. Would you like to help them? Below is some information about his family:

• His wife is “Sora.” We don’t have her clothing size, but she could use any non-clothing items for an adult woman new to Louisville.

• His oldest daughter is “Ayen”, age 12. She’s a tall girl like her father, and wears clothing in sizes 12 – 16.

• His middle daughter is “Chengmigau”, age 8. She wears clothing in sizes 6 – 8.

• His youngest daughter is “Yar”, age 5. She also wears clothing in sizes 6 – 8.

The synagogue is now collecting clothing, toys, toiletries, and other items that a family new to the USA could use. Please drop items off during the week in the synagogue office. Smaller items can be left in the collection bins in the Information Station. We are also accepting donations to purchase gift cards for the family. Donations can be made online at www.adathjeshurun.com/donate or sent to the AJ Office. Please earmark your donation as “Assistance for Martin.” I plan to take the family on a shopping trip soon.

Thank you for being a part of this important mitzvah. Together, we have changed the lives of this family. We can all be very proud!

The discussion will explore the Israeli Supreme Court's role in defending human rights and reshaping Israel's Democratic and Jewish identity, including rights to equality, freedom of employment, freedom of speech, civil liberties for marriage and property ownership, amongst others.

Guest Speaker, Rotem Malach is both a licensed attorney and a high school teacher. He works as the central emissary in North America for the World Zionist Organization's Department of Diaspora Activities. He is also the author of “The Democratic Citizen”, a civics textbook used in Israeli schools.
