“Friends, Pastors, Staff and Congregations, Lend me your Ears!” A quote adapted from Shakespeare’s Marcus Antonius

by Dr. Tracy Jaggers

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF GOOD LISTENING SKILLS? • Vital, healthy relationships • Clarity of assignments and expectations • Builds rapport with staff, employees and church members • Shows compassion and respect • Builds a stronger team environment • Resolves unnecessary misunderstandings • Discloses any hidden meanings in the message

THE FOLLOWING TIPS CAN HELP YOU LISTEN MORE EFFECTIVELY

• Really give yourself to listening – resist the urge to talk or give advice – pause before responding • Maintain eye contact • Stay present – don’t allow your mind to wander • Utilize an attentive (attentive) posture • Nod in agreement whenever appropriate, but don’t nod off • Don’t interrupt • Withhold judgement on what is being said until you hear them out. • Ask for clarification – summarize and/or repeat back what you think you heard them say • Ask “open” questions (avoid “closed” questions that can be answered by “yes” or “no”) • Look for non-verbal clues – facial expressions; body language • Listen for what they are not saying or avoiding saying - don’t read something into it either! • Think before you speak – words cannot be taken back.

HINDRANCES TO GOOD LISTENING Biases; prejudices; preconceived ideas

Different languages, accents or dialects

Different contextual understanding – i.e. a software developer to a pastor (this has happened to me!)

Noise; distractions; (mute your cell phone)

Pondering your respond while the speaker is still talking

Fear; frustration; anger; worry; defensiveness

Short attention span

EXTRA: HOW TO TEACH GOOD LISTENING KILLS TO YOUR CHILDREN

• When you ask them to do something, tell them to repeat your instructions • Teach your children to look at you when you are talking • Read to them, then discuss what you have read for comprehension and understanding • Involve them in listening events – while camping, be silent – “Tell me what you heard?”

Can you hear me now? Can you comprehend the importance of this topic? Jesus spoke to his disciples clearly, but they didn’t always capture His meaning.

How Will We Know If We Are Listening Well? Did you hear me?

There is nothing wrong with asking them to repeat what you have verbalized!
