California Native Garden Foundation discusses

“ Planting NativesDuring Timesof Drought”

by Tom KarwinFor the past eight years, the

Garden Faire has featured sustainable gardening, and advocated wise uses of water, drought-tolerant plants, and fertilizers and pest controls that do not depend on synthetic chemicals. This

year, the Faire marks its most relevant year ever, with the theme, “Growing During Times of Drought.”

Water management staff from local water districts will provide practical information for using water wisely in the home and in the garden. They will also talk about their district’s

rebate programs and free products for water customers. Also, a series of expert speakers offer diverse perspectives on the

Faire’s theme. • ArlieMiddlebrookoftheCalifor-

This year’s ninth annual cel-ebration of responsible gardening and landscaping continues the Faire’s familiar features, as it convenes expert speakers, exhibitors of garden plants and garden info, activities for kids and music for all.

Many gardeners come to the

Faire to visit the dozens of booths where local, garden-oriented busi-nesses and community groups offer garden-related plants and other items, and information.

Ahighlight of the day’s pre-sentation includes brief comments by SenatorBillMonningandAssembly-manMarkStone,whowill addresslegislative initiatives related to the Faire’s theme and the environment.

Probably anyone is smart enough to know not to get too close to power lines—thoughts of electrocution easily come to

mind. But what about living near them, say about 500 yards away?

That may sound safe. And it is safer: when you move a few yards away, the danger greatly lessens. But that just means you probably won’t be burnt to a crisp at that distance.

What you may not realize is that if you live or work near power lines, over time there can be significant damage to your health. In fact, research over the past 30 years has shown there are serious health risks for those who live or work close to power lines.

This isn’t surprising, as power lines emit high levels of Radio Fre‑quency radiation (RF), a serious type of electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Exposure to EMFs interferes with cell functioning, breaks DNA strands, and erodes the immune system.

Early Symptoms of Living Near Power Lines. These biological irregularities can cause initial symptoms such as:

• headaches • brain-fog• dizziness • insomnia• digestive disorders • fatigue

And these symptoms may develop over time into more serious diseases, especially in children, pregnant women and the elderly. Research on Power Lines Health Risks

Cancer: R.M. Lowenthal in Australia conducted a study on cancer and exposure to RF radiation from high power lines. Results showed the risk of developing cancer increased by 106% for people who lived within 50 meters of a power line, compared to those who lived 300 meters away.

Childhood Leukemia: The British Medical Journal published a study conducted by Gerald Draper which found that children who lived within 200 meters of a high voltage power line at birth were 70% more likely to develop childhood leukemia than those living more than 600 meters away.

Depression, Anxiety and Sleep Dis-orders: The Pacific Northwest Laboratory in Washington published a study that found that EMFs from power lines disrupted circadian rhythm cycles and altered serotonin and mela‑

tonin neurotransmitter levels—all of which cause sleep disorders and difficulty in regulating emotions, such as depression and anxiety.

‑‑‑‑‑ Anke Huss, et al., con‑ducted a study correlating power lines and neurodegenerative diseases.

Researchers found that there was a dose‑response relation between living by power lines and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and also senile dementia.

Miscarriage: De‑Kun Li, of Kaiser Permanent’s research division in Oakland, CA, conducted an epidemiological study which found an up to six‑fold increased risk of spontaneous abortions among women living by power lines.

If you’ve been experiencing symptoms since you’ve lived near power lines, your expo‑sure to them might be a possible cause—or at least a contributing one.

You can get EMF protection and shielding which is imperative to do these days.

Shanti Rivers has done extensive research on the effects of environmental influences on health, especially focusing on electromagnetic pollution. She’s found that using EMF protec-tion products (www.earthcalm.com/products/) is extremely effective.

and MoreNew Studies Show Health Risks

from Wireless Tech: Warnings from the BioInitiative Working Group/ University at Albany, Rensselaer, NY.

The BioInitiative Working Group says evidence for health risk from wireless tech is growing stronger and warrants immediate action. The Group released a mid-year update covering new science studies from 2012 to 2014.

New studies intensify medical concerns about malignant brain tumors from cell phone use. “There is a consistent pattern of increased risk for glioma (a malignant brain tumor) and acoustic neuroma with use of mobile and cordless phones” says Lennart Hardell, MD, PhD at Orebro University, Sweden, according to studies released in 2012 and 2013. “Epidemiological evidence shows that radiofrequency should be classified as a known human carcinogen. The existing FCC/IEEE and ICNIRP public safety limits are not adequate to protect public health.”

The BioInitiative reports nervous system effects in 68% of studies on radiofrequency radiation (144 of 211 studies) in 2014. This has increased from 63% in 2012 (93 of 150 studies) in 2012. Studies of extremely-low frequency radiation are reported to cause nervous system effects in 90% of the 105 studies available in 2014. Genetic effects (damage to DNA) from radiofrequency radiation is reported in 65% (74 of 114 studies); and 83% (49 of 59 studies) of extremely-low frequency studies.

Mobile wireless devices like phones and tablets are big sources of unnecessary biological stress to the mind and body that can chip away at resilience over time. The Report warns against wireless in schools. Schools should provide internet access without Wi-FI.

“It is essentially an unregulated experiment on childrens’ health and learning.”

Microwave from wireless tech disrupts thinking – what could be worse for learning? Technology can be used

more safely with wired devices that do not produce these biologically-disruptive levels of microwave radiation” said Cindy Sage, Co-Editor of the BioInitiative Report.

Federal programs like ConnectED and E-Rate are calling for wireless classrooms while ignoring the health evidence. Hyperactivity, concentration problems, anxiety, irritability, disorientation, distracted behavior, sleep disorders, and headaches are reported in clinical studies.

Government reviews on health impacts of wireless radiofrequency radiation from the European Union and Australia continue to be inconclusive largely because they require certainty before issuing warnings. The FCC review of health impacts from wireless technologies is still underway, but has not affected the federal push for wireless classrooms.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The last issue (May’14), the article on pg 7 about ‘Cell Phone Radiation’ was erroneous in saying that “you don’t have to be concerned about using your cell phone . . . if you have EMF protection”. Quality EMF protection can help to shield us somewhat, however, we must be aware of the multitude of Cell Towers which are pervasive as well as there is so much more microwave radiation AND we are in such a time that we need to work, educate and take action against having Cell Towers, Smart Meters, etc., etc. I apologize for allowing that misinformation in our ‘Healthy Planet’ Column.

This question may seem mean. But, I re-cently overheard someone say this about their grown unemployed child. I hap-

pen to know the “useless” person in question - a col-lege grad who never quite bought into the whole job thing - but a far cry from “useless”. What makes a parent discard the worth and talent of their own children? It seems that the video gaming base-ment dwellers are not the only ones who are put into this basket these days. I Googled it and was surprised at what I found . . .

If you search online you will fi nd many articles proclaiming Gen-eration X and Y useless - as opposed to the “Greatest Generation” who en-dured the Great Depression and WWI and II. There are many proposed solutions that range from starting World War III so the useless can have something to do - to penalizing the poor and unemployed to a slow death by disenfranchisement. What gives? What has happened that now makes people the enemy and places our cur-rent paradigm beyond reproach?

Some say it is the media, some say it is human nature, but most seem to believe that people are fun-damentally lazy and bad. Where did they learn this perspective? Looking online I fi nd people are crazy clever, engaged, and brave. Many are dump-ing the current perspective of the “real world” - and have decided to create their own reality and blaze a path rather than be a peg in the machine that accounts them no value. There is a growing counter culture that fi nds fertile ground in the countless pages of internet art and commentary.

It is easy to miss what is happening with the infl ux of big established media anxiously devising new ways to feed us our latest perspec-tive. Yes, I believe our opinions are not our own. Surely we are more compassionate than the headlines would make it seem. I don’t know anyone who says they would turn away a fellow human in desperate need of care. Yet this is what

we do everyday. It is done indirectly by our daily participation and propping up of activities that collectively creates our society.

This is a society where a child is diagnosed with cancer every 3 minutes, someone dies of starvation every 4 seconds or so, and the physical earth is nearly dead. Is our human spirit dying

with it? We build this world by abandoning our families and communities everyday to go out and

“work” or get “educated” so we can grow up and be “successful”. I’ve heard this most ac-curately described as “organized irresponsi-bility”.

O u r w o r l d claims to be progress-

ing towards a society that is working towards

human freedom above all else - yet does not allot any human beings their most basic birthright. Our birthright is the

freedom to build a home on a piece of land, grow our own food, and live in cooperation with our community. Very little seems to have changed from the times of lords and serfs except we call them “banks” and home “owners” now. We are delegated to concrete jungles where we slave to live in a box , buy chemical ridden food, and teach our children that success is how deeply they can get tied to a lifetime of debt, competition and glorifi ed greed.

We are entering a world with rap-idly growing inequality not seen since the era of the “Greatest Generation”. There is nothing you can do about it though … right? Most feel their only recourse is to buy a gun, blame someone else, and elect yet another new leader to captain the same sinking ship. Will we stand up with the courage to suggest something different - something better that we can leave our children? What will it take to get folks to act in a way that gives cre-dence to life and liberty instead of the numbers on Wall Street and the masters that tell us they are the only real thing? Please check out one alternative at http://futureofthefree.com.

by Gina Locatelli and Allen MorganWhy Heirlooms?

Why not heirlooms! Many of us talk about treasured family heirlooms like

grandma’s garnet broach or Great Uncle Johnny’s favorite chair, but why aren’t we talking about passing down healthy, hearty, uncompromised heirloom seeds? These open-polli-nated seeds, which produce their own offspring plants, are the trademark of most heirlooms. In the quest for big yield, disease resistant crops, and undeniable GREED, Big Farma is threatening to poi-son the future of our planet by limiting our food supply and by altering the DNA of our food source. The future of our planet depends on a geneti-cally diverse food supply and that is precisely: Why Heirlooms! Not to mention, the collective consensus is that heirlooms taste better, have significantly higher mineral values, and there are thousands of unusual and exciting varieties to choose from. What is a Superfood and why grow Heirloom Superfoods?

The Oxford Dictionary defines a superfood as “A nutri-ent-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being.” Though there is no legal or medical defini-tion, superfoods are nutrient powerhouses that pack large doses of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. They also contain polyphenols, which are a large class of chemical compounds that contain powerful antioxidants that can neutralize free radicals, reduce inflammation, and slow the growth of tumors. Eating super-foods may reduce the risk of chronic disease, prolong life, and inspire emotional health.Examples of Superfoods:• Acaiberry-antioxidantthatpro-

tects against free radicals• Kale-vanguardofthecancerfight-

ers, helps with constipation• Pumpkin-reducesriskofprostate

cancer, antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-carcinogenic

• Pomegranate - promotes hearthealth, aides with hypertension and Alzheimer’s disease

• Garlic - lowers blood pressure,anti-inflammatory

• Blueberries-antioxidant,protectsagainst free radicals

• Watercress-combatscancersandscurvy

The list goes on to include papaya, spinach, oranges, cauliflower, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, bananas, carrots, cranberries, kiwi, broccoli, tomatoes, strawberries, and green peppers. This is not to overshadow foods like walnuts, olive oil, certain

grains, green teas, black tea, beans, and cinnamon. As you can see, the heirloom superfoods that we can grow for ourselves are capable of providing value to our health and help prevent us

from pharmaceutical intervention and corporately produced daily vitamins.Red Russian kale - a Superfood leader!

Kaleisoftenhailedfirstonthelistofsuperfoods.RedRussianKale(available at Seed Saver Exchange, http://www.seedsavers.org/) has more vitamins, minerals, micronutrients, andphytonutrients thanspinach.Percalorie, kale has more iron than beef and more calcium than milk! It can be grown year round and does particularly well in February, March and April. An eight-ounce cup of chopped raw kale provides twice the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A along with more than a full day’s supply of vitamin C and almost seven times the dailydoseofvitaminK.It isrichin

B6, calcium, potassium, copper and manganese. And, you can eat it raw, boiled, baked, steamed, sun dried, machine dried, or dehydrated - and it’s not bitter.

Red Russian kale is not hard to grow and is considered a peren-

nial, generally producing for two years. Seed Saver Exchange’s variety can survive in weather 10 de-grees below freezing and up to 100 degrees in the shade. Survival in varying climates is one of its best attributes and makes it useful practically world-wide. Genetically modi-fied organisms (GMO) do not have the capability to adapt. An example of this is when Iowa recently ex-perienced corn crop failure because the GMO corn could not acclimate to the

excessive heat. This certainly did not make food prices go down.

We encourage you to start with one plant and get the ball rolling. It

will not only provide you with nutrition, but will allow you to cultivate the seeds at no cost and share them and/or use them later. What better way to assist in preserving the biodiversity of our plant life and to conserve and promote America’s culturally diverse, but endangered food crop heritage for future generations.Where to buy seeds and starter plants

Clinical Hypnotherapy

by Adora Deva

Andrew Weil, MD, says, “Health is wholeness and balance, an inner resilience that allows you to meet the

demands of living without being overwhelmed.”When we are out of balance, this stress

affects our mind and body in many ways that can cause major damage to our health, moods, relationships, and quality of life.

Part of managing stress involves taking charge of our thoughts, emotions, schedules, environment, and the way we deal with problems. We can choose to change some of the stressful situations when we can and choose to change our reaction when we can’t. Using hypnotherapy and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), I teach people how to change their thoughts and reac-tions to stress and fi nd ways to learn to relax. Simply by changing the way you think about things, the things you think about change.

I usually include a Light session with guided visualization to help people really drop into to a deep Theta brain wave to get that deep nourishing rest. In that deep space, people are open to receive suggestions for the change they are looking for. At the cellular level, the photons of light are transformed into energy, giving you a renewed sense of well-being. This kind of session provides stress relief very quickly and is very nourishing.

“Fear less, hope more; eat less, chew

more; whine less, breathe more; talk less, say more; hate less, love more; and all good things will be yours.”—Swedish proverb

I love that proverb! One of the ways I feel happy and healthy is when I’m being nourished on all levels—when I’m getting suffi cient exer-cise, eating well, and feeling relaxed and at peace. In these moments, I feel vitalized and connected with joy and my passion for life. When I am fully alive in the moment, being the love I am seeking, and then grace fl ows and my life works.

So what do you love? What are you passion-ate about? As you become inspired and connect to your joy and passion for life, you are able to recognize your own divinity and all is possible.

We listen. We care. We get results!Dr. Bjorn Bostrom

by Anita Gor O.D.

About 85% of all skin cancers are as-sociated with exposure to harmful UV radiation from the sun. More sun dam-

age to the eyes occurs in childhood then at any other stage of life. This is because the pupils are naturally larger in the early decades of life, allowing more harmful UV light to pass through the structures of the eye and reach the retina.

Most people are aware of the benefits of sunscreen for their face and body when used appropriately, but avoid applying it close to the eyes since it can enter into the eyes causing tis-sue damage and stinging. Even if applied on the uppermost part of the cheeks, it can seep into the eyelid skin and sting as it gets into the tear film.

As a result the delicate eyelid skin and eyes themselves are more prone to aging and sun damage.

Children, especially those in strollers, should have sunglasses on when outdoors. The incline that they are seated at usually exposes them to much more light. Even while walking, being lower, most children are nearly always

looking upwards at the world and towards more sunlight.

A good way to protect the lids and eyes is large UV blocking sunglasses. There is a valid fear that the glasses can break and injure a child. California State law says that all children under age 18 must have polycarbonate safety material that is shatterproof. Any children’s sunglasses that you buy without a prescription should therefore comply with this and be safe to use.

Sunglasses with polycarbonate safety lenses not only protect the delicate skin area around your child’s eyes but also the whites of the eyes (Conjunctiva) and the intraocular lens and retina.

In later life your kids will thank you as their likelihood of developing cataracts, macular degeneration and dry eyes is greatly reduced, due to sun protection.

It takes a village to raise a healthy child, and Santa Cruz is a close knit, progressive and caring community. If you see a young parent with sunglasses on, and their baby is squinting into the sun in the stroller, it is our responsi-

bility to that child and an obligation as a community to delicately make the young parent aware that the child is look-ing straight into the sun. There is always a risk of being per-ceived as meddling, but surely its worth the risk to protect a child and hopefully, the advice will be received in the spirit it is given.

REPLACING LOST TEETH IMMEDIATELYby David L. Biles, D.D.S., M.A.

Once patients decide to re-move unhealthy teeth, the next concern often becomes

what to replace the teeth with, and, I generally give the same answer. We can ultimately replace the teeth with devices that are removable or xed, depending on their preferences and budget, but in the very beginning, I tell my patients that we are going to replace their teeth with a ipper. That’s right, a device we in the profession refer to as a “ ipper” or an immedi-ate temporary partial denture. The name ipper comes presumably from the ease the appliance can be ipped out of the mouth by the tongue when necessary. It has no relationship to the dolphin television star of the 60’s.

So what is a ipper? Gen-erally speaking, a ipper is a removable oral appliance with 1-3 teeth attached to a custom made hard pink acrylic plate that form- ts to the palate or lower dental arch utilizing the contours of the teeth and the arch for retention and stability. Some dentists have them made with metal clasps for retention, though I have managed to locate a small lab that does cus-tom work for me and provides metal free services. Since many of my patients present with signs of metal allergies, having a metal free removable option is paramount in my practice. I am blessed to have such a skilled laboratory technician to service my patients. His name is Stan; he’s an artist and has a wonderful grounded sense of humor. I can always count on Stan; he is, Stan the Man.

Back to the topic—a ipper is usually inserted immediately upon ex-traction of teeth for multiple purposes. It serves as an immediate band-aid by placing direct pressure over the surgi-cal wound site, aiding in healing by stopping the ow of blood, much like what is done in a rst aid situation: direct pressure to the wound. The form of the ipper also helps create and guide the nal tissue contour which helps to assure a nice functional and esthetic bony foundation for later pos-sibilities. Moreover, its presence limits food and other forces from disturbing the healing wound, making healing less disruptive. I particularly like the design that Stan creates for my patients because his meticulous attention to detail enables my patients to securely wear their ippers for weeks without adding dental pastes and adhesives for retention. It takes a little more extra time and plaster to make the ipper retain without pastes, but it is well

worth the bene t in hygiene, healing, and hassle.

One of the biggest concerns many patients have is how their ap-pearance will be altered immediately following the surgery. I tell them to relax; they will never leave the of ce without their smile after their surgical appointment. Moreover, we have spent

years creating pretty smiles with our ippers, and truly do work with an art-

ist, Stan, who truly cares about people, which is reflected in his work and timeliness when emergency ippers are needed to quickly help a traumatic situation. Supporting people and labs like Stan’s is why we work with small laboratories: we have the relationship to ask for favors when necessary.

I believe that a well-designed esthetic ipper should provide patients with a con dent smile after the surgery is complete, and that’s what we con-sistently provide. In my of ce, that means that the smile is eye-catching, but does not draw critical scrutiny. In many cases, the smile we provide following surgery is a significant improvement over the one the patient presented with at the beginning of the dental journey.

Speech is generally affected initially, but within 48 hours of use, people adapt and speech returns to nor-mal, though the continual awareness of the appliance with the tongue per-sists awhile longer. Occasionally, the ipper can be thinned to create more

tongue space, but thinning weakens the plate, and should be minimized. Since the ipper may be necessary for an indeterminate amount of time, it is best to take good care of it. My recommendation is that patients put up with the thickness for a week before thinning the support, and then only if intolerable. Keeping ippers wet and cleaning them with a toothbrush and soap and water also helps assure long-term use. If one chooses to not wear it for awhile, I recommend placing the ipper in water with some 3% hy-drogen peroxide. A word to the wise: cover and place the ipper away from pets, as cats and dogs have been known to chew up dental appliances.

Flippers are generally worn a minimum of approximately 10-12

weeks before treatment to pro-vide a more permanent restor-ative option can begin. It takes that long before soft tissue and bone mature enough before it is possible or wise to resume treatment. Flippers can, by the way, last for a long time, given the situation and the care the patient affords the appliance. I have patients who have worn these for years. Plus, I have had patients who wore nothing but ippers for decades as it t best

into their lifestyle, budget, and health concerns.

The pink material in most removable appliances is acrylic and is colored by the heavy metal, cadmium. Cadmium free acrylics are available, and our

choice of materials for our patients. Teeth are acrylic and porcelain, though porcelain teeth are a bit more costly. Setting and adjusting porcelain teeth is more challenging and time consuming, with little esthetic gain, so I generally stay with the acrylic teeth. Besides, the acrylic teeth bond to the plate, whereas the porcelain ones must be mechani-cally retained. In a situation where I need to thin the tooth for clearance by opposing teeth, porcelain teeth can fracture. Stick with the acrylic teeth.

I hope that by knowing more about ippers, the journey beyond ex-traction becomes less threatening, less fearful. Remember, you can have your smile the day your teeth are extracted. How much better can it get, given the circumstances? Happy trails….

Dowsing is a sustainable skill and one that supports sustainable living. It has been practiced for thou-

sands of years. You can learn sustainable dowsing at the West Coast Conference in Santa Cruz this coming July 3rd through 7th, 2014.• Learn about the many uses of

Dowsing• The West Coast Dowsing &

Metaphysics Conference, Schools and Workshops

Dowsing enhances all forms of conservation in many ways. You can dowse to learn when and how much water your plants or lawn really needs. You will learn to dowse which activities best serve your spiritual and physical needs (Jogging? Yoga? Chi gong? Swimming? Meditation, for example). You can learn to dowse to support any benefi cial humani-tarian cause, by learning the best ways to add benefi cial energy to it. Dowsers actively support a lot of causes, from “Water for Humanity” to “Safe Schools” and beyond, by contributing their energy in ways that demonstrably work.Mastering this ancient skill enables you to become more involved in making a personal difference on the planet.

By dowsing, you can learn which foods your body wants right now, and which vitamins, minerals or supplements it needs. This saves you from spending time and money on things that you don’t need and that your body doesn’t want. You may discover benefi cial diet modifi cations, or new mental or physical activities that you hadn’t considered before.

Dowsing: A Sustainable Practice That Sustains You!

Everything...Every Day: Better Living Through Dowsing Dowsing will also show you which fruits

or vegetables or grains are GMOs so that you can avoid eating them.

If you are a gardener, dowsing can tell you which plants will do best in the different parts of your garden. It can tell you what to do to eliminate pests with-out using pesticides and sprays. Dowsers often use French Coils to heal fruit trees and other plants, bringing positive, living energy to the plant instead of applying poisons.

Dowsing can show you the shortest travel route to your

destination, and the places to buy fuel at the lowest prices along the way. This reduces your carbon footprint. And, you can also use it to fi nd water.

IS NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE RIGHT FOR YOU?

Page 15 ▲ The Connection Magazine ▲ www.ConnectionMagazineOnline.com ▲ Facebook/ConnectionOnline ▲ June — July 10, 2014

by Dr. Rozelle

Are you tired of being told there’s nothing wrong with you when you still feel bad? If so, then Naturopathic Medicine might

be the answer you’ve been looking for. Patients often fi nd their way to a Naturo-

pathic Doctor because it’s their last hope, they’ve tried everything else and nothing has helped, or they’re suffering from a chronic condition and have been told there is not a diagnosis for their symptoms. Because Naturopathic Medicine is treating the whole person, and not the disease, it can often offer help for these patients when conventional medicine fails and often provides the solution patients are looking for.

Naturopathic medicine is a unique form of medicine that combines both conventional and alternative medicines and focuses on whole per-son wellness. Naturopathic Doctors are trained as primary care doctors, and can diagnose, order labs, perform physical exams, and provide ef-fective treatments for both acute and chronic conditions.

Naturopathic medicine is a more holistic approach to healthcare, aimed at discovering and treating the root cause of disease, and not just their symptoms. It is the belief that disease affects the whole person, not just one organ or body system. Most importantly, it recognizes that the body has an innate ability to heal itself, if given the right tools to do so. Because of this naturopathic treatments are aimed at facilitating this inherent ability, removing obstacles to cure, and helping to restore and maintain health and balance in the body.

Conditions commonly treated through Naturopathic medicine include, but are not limited to: anxiety, depression, thyroid disorders, autoimmune conditions, hormonal imbalances,

by Sylvia Skefi ch, D.C

Body pains? If your first impu l se i s

“That’s me”, then you likely have infl amma-

tion. Think of two types of infl ammation: local infl ammation from a one-time or repetitive stress injury, and systemic (all over) infl ammation. Sys-temic infl ammation can make any pain problem that you have worse, to the point where it can keep an injury from healing as quickly as it should.

How do you know if you have systemic infl ammation? A health practitioner who works with hands-on methods may be able to recognize the tissue quality with their hands. Inflamed people feel more puffy, rubbery, or dense than the non-infl amed person (depending on how long the infl ammation has been there). The infl amed person may also have more areas of pain, or have pain that does not resolve as it should, or that returns too quickly for not enough reason. This person may also feel too tired, and may have a “foggy” head.

What causes systemic infl ammation? There are many potential causes, but the most com-mon has to do with what the person is eating. Frequently eating foods that one is allergic to (dairy is common) will cause infl ammation. To fi nd out if your infl ammation is from food allergy, do a one week food diary, then do an elimina-tion of all foods that you eat daily or near-daily for three weeks to calm the infl ammation. Look for different forms of the food. For example “dairy” is milk, and yoghurt, and creamed cof-fee, and burritos with cheese, and…. ”Almonds” includes almond butter, and dry almonds, and almond milk, and protein bars with almond.

Then bring one food type back in one at a time in large amounts (pig out). Wait two weeks before bringing in each new food because it may take a week or more for the pain to fl are back up after introducing the food.

Another potential cause of systemic infl am-mation is gluten intolerance. Gluten is a protein in wheat, barley and rye. Unlike a simple food allergy, which will usually give you decreased symptoms if you decrease your exposure, gluten must be TOTALLY eliminated to resolve your problem. The reaction is an autoimmune attack triggered by exposure to gluten. One must go 100% gluten free for weeks to months depending on the person, to get their results. Look for hidden sources, included wheat protein in shampoos and conditioners, soy sauce and beer.

Another cause of systemic infl ammation is either chronically high or too frequently low blood sugar levels. Insulin is itself infl ammatory. So is sugar. So when the cells have become in-sulin resistant, and the blood becomes rich with too much insulin and sugar, it causes systemic infl ammation. Low blood sugar is also infl am-matory because stress hormones are released in response to low blood sugar. Stress hormones are infl ammatory. That’s why people who are under a lot of stress don’t heal well. Sex hormone imbalances, like stress hormones can also be an infl ammatory condition.

Sylvia Skefi ch is a Doctor of Chiropractic. She offers practical help with fi nding your path to health including blood tests for food allergy that report IgG and IgE independently (to reduce incidence of false negatives), and the state of the art Cyrex panels for gluten reactivity. gas t ro in tes t ina l conditions, and skin conditions. These conditions can be treated through a variety of natural therapeutics, in-cluding cl inical nutrition, botanical medicine, home-opathy, IV therapy, and hydrotherapy. Because naturopathic doctors are trained in various thera-peutic modalities, they can provide effective and individualized treatment plans for their patients.

Naturopathic medicine is a great treatment option for patients who “have tried everything else and nothing has worked,” for patients with-out a concrete diagnosis, or for people seeking optimal health and wellness.

In order to showcase as many artists as possi-ble and change your dining experience on a regular basis, artwork at Michael’s on Main rotates every 8 weeks. All the art work on exhibit is for sale.Upcoming 2014 Art Exhibits/ Fireside Room

About MichaelMichael has spent his whole life cooking.

The opening of Michael’s on Main on November 19, 2001 was the culmination of three decades in the restaurant business. It would be an under-statement to say that food and wine are Michael’s passion. You only have to come in and meet him to realize that he loves this business. The restaurant is located on Main Street in Soquel, and features what Michael calls “cutting-edge comfort cuisine. His philosophy about comfort food means getting back to the basics, such as meat and potatoes,

and keeping the prices down. The entire staff at Michael’s on Main invites you to come en-joy cutting-edge comfort cuisine in a friendly, casual atmosphere! What People Are Say-ing About Michael’s:

Consistently amaz-ing. We’ve never

had anything less than an amazing meal here. The brussel sprouts are perfectly inspired. The artichoke dip is the right amount of rich and indulgent. The sashimi never disappoints. The pistachio crusted salmon is in-credible!!! The wine selection has a nice variety of reasonable to splurges.

The wait staff is well informed and genuinely love and enjoy the food they serve. Super helpful, great at answering questions and going choices. Nice romantic atmosphere in either room.

Had a wonderful Sunday brunch here. Perfect close to our alumni weekend at UCSC. I had a

mouth watering omelette with kale, smoked bacon, feta cheese with breakfast potatoes and an English muffin with some wonderful African vanilla hot tea. I mean I ate everything on my plate it was completely clean when I was done lol. Everyone else at the table of 20 raved about their food as well. There was also live music playing which was a nice atmosphere for a Sunday brunch.

all thoughts are not equal. Recently I’ve been

interested in the work of Eric Maisel. He’s a thera-pist, writer and creativity coach. He says that just because a thought is true, doesn’t mean we have to entertain it. His example

is a writer who sits down to write and then thinks, “I’ve already wasted so much time” or “There are so many writers out there.” Both thoughts might be true, but they are not useful. His advice is to evaluate thoughts according to their usefulness.

So which thoughts are useful? The answer depends on what you ultimately want for your life. What do you value? Who do you want to be? Which thoughts support your highest good and which thoughts need to be released and replaced?

Beyond this basic investigation is the prac-tice. We need practice to build the momentum of our positive thoughts and to speed up our recovery time when negativity begins leading us down blind alleys or toward painful destinations.

Science of Mind is this kind of mental prac-tice within a spiritual framework. It is positive thinking and more. Positive thinking can seem like a kind of mental trickery unless it is based on an underlying belief that there is a universal unity comprised of intelligence and love. Conscious-ness is the creative medium behind everything. It is a power for good that expresses through and as each of us. To me, this is the ultimate positive thought with implications that are both practical and profound.

Beyond Positive Thinkingby Susan Springfield

Come with me to Center Court at Wimble-don. It’s the finals of this amazing tennis tournament. All eyes are on the two play-

ers enacting an epic competition. Both players have incredible endurance and skill. What is the one factor that will determine who takes home the trophy?

This is the question that Tony Schwartz and Jim Loehr were seeking to answer as sports psychologists. What they found to be the most important predictor of success, at this level of competition was recovery time between points. The eventual winner, had certain thoughts be-tween points that helped them step back into the game with more focus. Often these thoughts were accompanied by little rituals, like bouncing the ball three times or adjusting racket strings.

Thoughts are the building blocks of our experience. One thought leads to another, espe-cially thoughts that are energized with feeling. Thoughts literally activate specific neural circuit-ry that, in turn, light up similar neural networks. In this way, our thoughts gather momentum and pick up speed.

A series of similar thoughts becomes a mood. A prolonged mood can become a mind-set. Mind-sets and habitual thoughts become our belief systems, which then show up as the conditions and experiences of our lives.

When we realize we can choose our thoughts and in choosing our thoughts we liter-ally create our lives, we have to ask ourselves some pretty important questions about what is worth thinking. We are thinking all the time and

Growing Up Wild has been

leading bilingual camping trips in Spanish and Eng-lish for youth and family camps for families in Santa Cruz County since 2008. The mission of Growing Up Wild is to help youth gain a connec-tion to nature and develop life skills as well as to help build community among families. As a community-based program, Growing Up Wild is operated by a small group of peo-ple, all of whom volunteer some of their time to do the various tasks needed to run a nonprofit outdoor education program successfully.

The effort to start this grass roots program began in 2005 when educator, Ismael Cruz, acquired acreage in the redwood forest. With the help of family and friends, he transformed the land into a unique campground. Today, almost 10 years later, this campground, named, “Camp Cruz” is the home of Growing Up Wild. Only 15 minutes up the mountain in Corralitos, Camp Cruz is an ideal setting for groups to connect with and enjoy nature. It has a year-round creek, a beautiful landscaped garden, and it is a natural habitat for a ladybug migration. It has camping comforts not found in

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Canadian Society of Pediatrics state infants aged 0-2 years should not

have any exposure to technology, 3-5 years be restricted to one hour per day, and 6-18 years restricted to 2 hours per day (AAP 2001/13, CPS 2010). Children and youth use 4-5 times the recommended amount of technology, with serious and often life threatening consequences (Kaiser Foundation 2010, Active Healthy Kids Canada 2012). Handheld devices (cell phones, tablets, electronic games) have dramatically increased the accessibility and usage of tech-nology, especially by very young children (Common Sense Media, 2013). As a pediatric occupational therapist, I’m calling on parents, teachers and governments to ban the use of all handheld devices for children under the age of 12 years. Following are 10 research-based reasons for this ban. Please visit /zonein.ca to view the Zone’in Fact Sheet for referenced research.

1. Rapid brain growth Between 0 and 2 years, infant’s brains triple in size, and continue in a state of rapid development to 21 years of age (Christakis 2011). Early brain development is determined by environmental stimuli, or lack thereof. Stimulation to a developing brain caused by overexposure to technologies (cell phones, internet, iPads, TV), has been shown to be associated with executive functioning and attention deficit, cognitive delays, impaired learning, increased impulsivity and decreased ability to self-regulate, e.g. tantrums (Small 2008, Pagini 2010).

many other campgrounds, such as an outdoor kitchen, indoor storage for food, hot showers, an arts and crafts station, playground equip-ment, a sweat lodge, a geo-desic dome, a lending library of camping gear, and more. Camp Cruz is available to

rent for family camps, retreats, house concerts, and other group events.

Growing Up Wild receives grant funding for its program, Boys in the Woodz, which is a week-long coming-

of-age summer program for boys ages, 10-17. Diverse groups of local youth stay overnight at Camp Cruz where they engage in activities that foster nature awareness and life skills such as cooperation, decision making, and problem solving. They sleep in tents, go on field study hikes, explore the creek, learn basic wilderness survival skills, complete a high ropes course, participate in a sweat lodge, and more.

The last week of the program consists of a camping trip to the Arroyo Seco River where youth explore the back country wilderness and enjoy a wild river. In 2014 the program runs every week in July. Scholarships are avail-able based on need.

Growing Up Wild puts on an an-nual benefit concert in the redwoods, called The Cruz Fest, to promote its programs, raise funds for scholarships, and help build community within San-ta Cruz County. Taking place on June 28th at the beautiful redwood setting

of Camp Cruz, this year’s concert will feature The B-Side Players, Ancestree, Boostive, a drum circle led by Ibou N’gom, as well as kid’s activities, including a performance by Santa Cruz-based bubble magi-cian, Tom Noddy. We hope the event will draw around 500 people. Tickets are on sale now at www.brownpapertickets.com. 10 Reasons Why Handheld Devices Should Be Banned for Children Under the Age of 12

2. Delayed Development Technology use restricts movement, which can result in delayed development. One in three children now enter school developmentally delayed, negatively impacting literacy and academic achievement (HELP EDI Maps 2013). Movement enhances attention and learning ability (Ratey 2008). Use of technology under the age of 12 years is detrimental to child development and learning (Rowan 2010).

3. Epidemic Obesity TV and video game use correlates with increased obesity (Tremblay 2005). Children who are allowed a device in their bedrooms have 30% increased incidence of obesity (Feng 2011). One in four Canadian, and one in three U.S. children are obese (Tremblay 2011). 30% of children with obesity will develop diabetes, and obese individuals are at higher risk for early stroke and heart attack, gravely shorten-ing life expectancy (Center for Disease Control and Prevention 2010). Largely due to obesity, 21st century children may be the first genera-tion many of whom will not outlive their parents (Professor Andrew Prentice, BBC News 2002).

4. Sleep Deprivation 60% of parents do not supervise their child’s technology usage, and 75% of children are allowed technology in their bedrooms (Kaiser Foundation 2010). 75% of children aged 9 and 10 years are sleep deprived to the extent that their grades are detrimentally impacted (Boston College 2012).

5. Mental Illness Technology overuse is implicated as a causal factor in rising rates of child depression, Page 23 ▲

One in six Ca-nadian children have a diagnosed mental illness, many of whom are on dangerous psychotropic medication (Waddell 2007).

6. Aggression Violent media content can cause child aggression (Anderson, 2007). Young children are increasingly exposed to ris-ing incidence of physical and sexual violence in today’s media. “Grand Theft Auto V” portrays explicit sex, murder, rape, torture and mutilation, as do many movies and TV shows. The U.S. has categorized media violence as a Public Health Risk due to causal impact on child aggression (Huesmann 2007). Media reports increased use of restraints and seclusion rooms with children who exhibit uncontrolled aggression.

7. Digital dementia High speed media content can contribute to attention defi cit, as well as decreased concentration and memory, due to the brain pruning neuronal tracks to the frontal cortex (Christakis 2004, Small 2008). Children who can’t pay attention can’t learn.

8. Addictions As parents attach more and more to technology, they are detaching from their children. In the absence of parental attachment, detached children can attach to devices, which can result in addiction (Rowan 2010). One in 11 children aged 8-18 years are addicted to technol-ogy (Gentile 2009).

9. Radiation emission In May of 2011, the World Health Organization classifi ed cell phones (and other wireless devices) as a category 2B risk (possible carcinogen) due to radiation emission (WHO 2011). James McNamee with Health Canada in October of 2011 issued a cautionary warning stating “Children are more

sensitive to a variety of agents than adults as their brains and immune systems are still developing, so you can’t say the risk would be equal for a small adult as for a child.” (Globe and Mail 2011). In December, 2013 Dr. Anthony Miller from the University of Toronto’s School of Public Health recommend that based on new research, radio frequency exposure should be reclassifi ed as a 2A (probable carcinogen), not a 2B (possible carcinogen). American Academy of Pediatrics requested review of EMF radiation emissions from technology devices, citing three reasons regarding impact on children (AAP 2013).

10. Unsustainable The ways in which children are raised and educated with technol-ogy are no longer sustainable (Rowan 2010). Children are our future, but there is no future for children who overuse technology. A team-based approach is necessary and urgent in order to reduce the use of technology by children. Please reference below slide shows on www.zonein.ca under “videos” to share with others who are concerned about technology overuse by children.

10 Reasons Why Handheld Devices Should Be Banned for Children Under the Age of 12

by Dr. Becker

Acral lick dermatitis, or ALD, is an injury caused by chronic licking that leads to infl amma-

tion and irritation of the skin.If the licking occurs in one central

spot that becomes thickened over time, it’s called an acral lick granuloma. A lick granuloma is a fi rm, raised, and ulcerated area of the skin that doesn’t heal because the kitty’s constant at-tention prevents the open wound from closing. The licking and infl ammation make the skin itchy, which causes more licking, and a vicious cycle of licking and itching can occur.

Acral lick dermatitis can occur in any cat of any age and either gender. The condition is much more common in dogs than in cats.

In addition to itchy skin, other potential triggers for acral lick derma-titis in cats include painful conditions caused by trauma to the skin, arthritis, neuralgia, and peripheral neuropathy. A bacterial or fungal infection of the skin can also trigger itching, as can skin mites, allergies, a reaction to an environmental irritant or toxin, hyperthyroidism, and certain types of cancer.Diagnosing Acral Lick Dermatitis in a Cat

A possible allergy to fl eas, food, chemicals in your cat’s food, or some-thing else in her food or environment should all be investigated fi rst.

A thorough review of potential

environmental irritants – including carpet treatments, cleaning products, room sprays, and laundry detergents, as well as water and air quality should all be evaluated as potential root causes for the skin irritation.

Several skin tests are usually necessary to definitively diagnose a lick granuloma, including a deep skin scraping to check for mites and cultures to rule out infection. Biopsies of infl amed tissue may also be needed to rule out certain types of skin cancer.

The vast majority of ALD cases involve bacterial infection of the skin. It’s extremely important for your veterinarian to identify the specifi c organism involved in order to deter-mine the most effective treatment, especially because these bacteria are often resistant to antibiotics. In fact, 25 percent are methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. Lab tests to rule out internal parasites and endocrine diseases like hyperthyroid-ism may also be warranted.Treatment Options

In order for wounded skin to heal properly, your cat must be prevented from licking it. She’ll need to be fi tted with an Elizabethan collar (E-collar) in most cases to prevent the licking cycle from continuing. An alternative might be a light, non-stick bandage. I’ve actually also had success using infant T-shirts on some kitties. The basic premise is, out of sight, out of mind. Some kitties lick their bellies, and put-

ting a T-shirt on them prevents them from getting to the site of irritation.

Keeping the wound clean is absolutely essential. I recommend disinfecting the area with dilute Be-tadine (povidone iodine) twice a day. Topical remedies I’ve used with good success for encouraging wound heal-ing include manuka honey applied to the area twice a day, Willard Water or colloidal silver sprayed on the wound several times a day, or the essential oil of lavender diluted with some coconut oil. Hypericum or calendula cream or tinctures can also be very benefi cial. Finding the Root Cause of Your Cat’s Licking

To prevent future licking and skin wounds, it’s crucial to identify and ad-dress the root cause for the behavior. Using topical products without iden-tifying why the licking is occurring is fruitless.

Acral lick dermatitis is known to be a psychogenic condition in some dogs, meaning the problem is primarily behavioral and actually on the obsessive-compulsive disorder spectrum. There isn’t any evidence to date that the same is true with kitties who develop the condition, but what we do know is that stress can exacer-bate dermatitis in domestic cats.

New Dimensions of Relationship

by Joyce and Barry Vissell

When we were in our twenties, Joyce and I were criticized for

being too close. Some people even quoted Kahlil Gibran from The Prophet, “…and the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.” They accused us of smothering one another. Early in our marriage, one of Joyce’s friends angrily proclaimed, “It’s like you’re putting all your eggs in one basket. One day, Barry may die and you’ll be lost!”

Yet all these years later, we are closer than ever, and thankful about it! We are convinced we have done the right thing. Yes, one of us probably will die before the other and, we admit, whoever survives will most certainly grieve deeply. We even sometimes feel this as our greatest vulner-ability. When I envision the possibility of me surviving Joyce, the feeling I get is one of a lost little boy alone on this earth without my best friend. I know I would be able to function. I even trust I would be able to feel Joyce’s soul near me and our relationship would continue. Yet the pain would be profound because not even one egg was in a different basket.

Are there other downsides to such close-ness? Perhaps. Some years ago, at breakfast during one of our annual Hawaii couples re-treats, Joyce broke tooth number thirteen. One of the participants at the retreat happened to be a dentist, who examined her and determined it

lunch the same day, only hours later, I broke tooth number … you guessed it … thirteen! The same dentist examined me and, in a hushed and reverent whisper, said, “Barry, I’ve heard about soulmates, but you guys are taking this way too far. Really … toothmates??”

This past March, Joyce had arthroscopic surgery for a torn medial meniscus in her left knee. One week after her surgery, the inside of my right knee started hurting. The pain continued

badly torn medial meniscus! I will be undergoing

as Joyce, in a few weeks. Joyce’s left knee, her feminine side. My right knee, my masculine

side. The orthopedic surgeon who operated on Joyce will also operate on me. A brilliant surgeon, but a man of very few words who neither of us have ever seen talk about anything but medicine, he looked at me with a strange, inquisitive smile and said, “I’ve been a

deeply in tune with one another without having

it is really a small price to pay for the depth of our connection. We both feel the rewards far outweigh the problems. Our closeness is a source of abundant love. One look into each other’s eyes and we often know what the other is thinking. Our happiest times are the times we spend together just the two of us. Our highest ideal of a vacation involves just the two of us, even though we once a year will typically spend about a week apart as a retreat to further deepen our love and closeness.

Most couples will typically spend at least one vacation a year with other couples. Once, on a Rogue River trip in southern Oregon, every group of rafters we encountered seemed to be a group of couples. They were often laughing and playing together, having quite the party vacation. We started wondering if there was something wrong with us. Were we antisocial? We realized we have very many friends all over the world, individuals and couples we love dearly. Would

with them? The answer was no. Does that mean we love them less than we could? Again, no. We acknowledge that we have long ago chosen to cultivate a special connection. If a friend doesn’t respect our need and desire to be alone together, than they are not so close a friend. Our true friends not only understand our closeness, but they rejoice in it.

Closeness and codependence are two dif-ferent things. Although you might be tempted to think that breaking the same tooth on the same day, or having surgery for the exact same problem

codependent, we beg to differ.

“Is It Closeness … or Codependence?”

Are you tired of the same old patterns, looking for a fresh new approach? Want to cre-

ate sustained success, in all areas of your life? Like the people mentioned below, you may be ready to soar to new heights – and stay there!

Phil has been feeling over-whelmed for as long as he can re-member. A bright entrepreneur, he has more ideas than he knows what to do with. However, staying organized is foreign to him, and he struggles with creative chaos. His new business is taking off, and once again, he is not prepared to handle the demands of success.

Isabel is climbing the corporate ladder faster than anticipated. With the higher achievement comes greater pressure – having to make quick decisions, multitasking and handling staff. The closer she gets to the top, the lonelier she feels. Her sensitive side – which also makes her a great leader – once again suffers, and with her stressful work schedule, time off doesn’t even provide enough sanctuary for her tortured soul. However, for Isabel to maintain the height of her career, she needs to go deep in her self-care.

Larry, manager at a Silicon Valley software

be CEO material. But communication is not his strong suit. Being highly goal oriented, others often experience Larry as abrupt. He tends to be a lone wolf rather than a team player. To advance, he needs to address his people skills issue once and for all.Your Issue is Your Edge

What is the issue you are really tired of? What is the one area in your life that holds you back from achieving – you might even feel some shame around it?

Our place of greatest darkness, the subject we do not want to face, is also the area of the great-est potential gain. Where you tend to get stuck is your “evolutionary edge.” Even the smallest progress you make in that arena can ac-celerate your development dramatically. Just as a team of alpine climb-ers will only advance as fast as its slowest member, your sustained prog-ress in career and l i fe de-pends on how willing you are to strengthen your weakest link.Outgrow your Challenge

self about “your edge?” Are you a t war w i th a part of you that seems to be lazy, disor-ganized, rude, incompetent, fragile…what-ever it may be?

Soar to New Heights — and Stay There! The energy that goes into the struggle is not available to you as life force. In working with many clients (and my own issues, for that matter), I have found that outgrowing challenges is much more effective. For example, instead of being hard on yourself for piles of paper on your desk, reward-ing steady progress… this works wonders.

Fly an Airplane – Not a KiteDoes your advancement sometimes seem

high, delighted that the wind is blowing to your advantage. But eventually the winds change and

enormous effort to take off again. …. Wouldn’t

kite for an airplane and sustain change and suc-cess. What new strategies and support can you use to board the plane?

Receiving coaching can be like riding an airplane. You are no longer trying to make things

motor. Through coaching, it becomes much easier to implement new avenues to success and

class. You can soar to new heights – and actu-ally stay there.

HEALTHY SELF-CENTEREDNESSby Christopher Love

Summer is here at last! Ev-erything is in full bloom and the Monterey Bay is burst-

ing with signs of life everywhere. I do love this time of year. The beaches are full of happy humans and the children are busy with outdoor play.

After my last article in the Connection Magazine titled, “Intuition is Power,” I have received some noteworthy comments. These brief communications offer me a greater per-spective of how intuition is viewed, understood and experienced in our community. These offer-ings range from some having no or very little intuitive experience to it being a commonplace occurrence for others.

On the side of the few, one person stated,

“I read your article and I want you to know that I can defi nitely relate to having experienced intuition twice.” This person’s experience of intuition is quite different from another who approached me at Staff of Life one day. She said, “In your last article, you spoke like intuition is a phenomena,

when it’s simply just how it is. We humans have intuition. We are all connected to each other and to all life.”

The purpose of this article is not to create a belief that some people are intuitive and some are not. Nor is it to imply judgment that living with or without intuition is right or wrong. I do however relish the idea of an exploration into this fascinating subject, and I would like to propose an experiment that you can participate in if you wish.

The nature of the experiment must be interesting, interesting enough to continue it. I have chosen the subject of this study to be you. Now these days, we seem to have a belief that focusing on the self is selfi sh. I propose that this attitude toward self-centered behavior has developed from experiencing people who tend to only care about what they want without any concern about how what they are doing affects others.

Here in the West, we are so abundant that even people considered “poor” by our standards are fairly well off in comparison to say people in Burkina Faso who only have a bowl of rice to eat each day. That said, we have so many choices before us, that we can spend half an hour starring at a city block long isle of differ-

ent kinds of chips at the local market before we come to a conclusion as to which chip will best compliment our lunch.

You have to admit we live in a land where we are spoiled, possibly even distracted, with the amount of choices we have. My point is that in an environment where we are given so many options, it is easy to grow up with a sense that everything is here to fulfi ll our personal desires. What if it is true that our intuitive sense is blocked by the distractions and desires of our minds?

For us to continue with our study of intu-ition, we will need to be clear of a few things as well as form a hypothesis. The clarity must come from a hunger to know the self, the true self. Not the consumer self we were all raised to be. We are way more than a shopping list of yearnings that have been cultivated since childhood.

Healthy self-centeredness is taking an inter-est to fi nd out who we are without all the things we identify ourselves with. Have you ever been able to give advice to a friend or family member that was of benefi t to them? Did this advice come from your perspective of their situation? How clearly do you see other people in your com-munity? Specifi cally, can you gain insight into others ways of being by observing their actions, language and mannerisms?

We can see what is happening more clearly for others because we are not directly involved. When it comes to ourselves we are often so caught up in the story of who we are and the circumstances of our lives that is often diffi cult to see clearly or have a fresh, outside perspective.

This fresh perspective of our selves is crucial to our investigation of intuition. The

hypothesis I am proposing is that all people have an innate sense of intuition that can assist them in creating the best possible outcome for themselves and those around them throughout life. Further-more, that intuition is not only something we all have, that steps can be taken to cultivate it, no matter how long it has hidden in the shadows.

Step one is taking the time each day to learn how to see one’s own life as a witness, like we view the lives of others. As we increase in this power of awareness, we will be able to see ourselves more clearly for who we are and any beliefs of who we think we are will slowly fade away. Even if you are not participating in our experiment, developing this power of awareness will be of benefi t to you.

To participate simply fi nd a quiet place to sit comfortably for fi ve or more minutes each day. During this “special time” with yourself review your day or perhaps yesterday, if you do this in the morning, and try to see your life from an outsiders point of view. Try not to get caught up in feelings, triggers or judgments that may be up for you as you look at your life. You may fi nd the power of discernment assisting you in seeing the difference between mindless desire and true longing.

My theory is that in time, your introspec-tion will reveal synchronicity playing out in your life. As you give less power and attention to the fancies of your cognitive mind, you may experi-ence more intuitive moments as well as moments of pure inspiration. I believe that the time you devote to this experiment each day will be well spent no matter the outcome. Have fun and enjoy getting to know yourself better.

Simple in action and in thoughts, you return to the source of Being.—Lao-Tzu by Amita

Through the process of spiritual alchemy, we dis-till and cook down to fi nd

the simple truth, the original, and the authentic. Creative energy and its natural flow is the expression of that alchemy. The flow is looking for a direction to follow like creeks to rivers to oceans.

Through my 34 years of working with individuals who are on their “path” to Awaken-ing or realizing their True Nature, I became aware of how the cleaver mind can spin some very creative stories and how those stories spin into sequels and the same sequels can rerun for many seasons. Remember, creativity will take the path that is presented to it. This same creative mind can become very complicated with drama composed of feelings and emotions from the past as well as fears and mistrust of the future.

To keep the story going, we start believing that we are what we do in the world, the roles we play, what we accomplish, and what we ac-cumulate. We keep adding layers upon layers to our stories and wondering why we feel out of touch with our essential True Nature.

The questions then start to arise, what is this creation that I have titled my life? Our stories and our lives are woven out of the same supreme consciousness of the Universe only in

LET’S DIGEST THIS — DIGESTION IS THE KEY!

We feel it’s because of our deep attunement, an alignment of our souls from forty-nine years of loving one another.

Closeness because of codependence is a whole other matter. It is not primarily love that is the glue of togetherness. It is, rather, the fear of being alone. Codependence can be a powerful emotional connection, but true closeness involves a heart connection. The codependent person says I have to be with you. The lover says I want to be with you because it makes me a better person. The codependent person says I need to be with you to be happy. The lover says I need to be with you not only to be happy but also to make this

It’s not what we eat, it’s what we absorb and assimilate, which is why digestion is a critical topic when it

comes to eating. Eighty percent of the body’s im-

Only 10% of the cells that make up the human body are actually human. The remaining 90% of our cells are microbes (bugs). These microbes play a critical role in every aspect of our health, and it is likely that the future of medicine will focus

these bugs reside? In the digestive tract. Given that fact, we need to focus on supporting healthy digestion as a prerequisite to maintaining our overall health. Here are some easy and effective ways to optimize your digestion:

1. Eat while relaxed. When the body is stressed, it doesn’t produce the stomach acid that is needed to digest food.

2. Drink one meal a day in the form of a

Our homes are more than a structure where we sleep, eat

and spend time with family and friends. The building itself, the placement of furniture and doors, our belongings and any unseen energetic presence, all have an effect on the quality of our life ex-perience. Our living space affects the nourishment we receive through food, air and water, our relationships, sleep, health and prosperity. Home has the ability to support us to thrive and live a life that nourishes our spirit. It can also create stress, contribute to poor health and hold us back in patterns we are trying to change.

It is not necessary to have a fancy, expensive home or a lot of money to have the support you need for a healthy life. Any room, studio, condo, apartment or cottage can be a sacred space that helps you through life. Us-ing your own creativity, intention and connection to nature, you can begin to create an environment for yourself that nourishes and supports your life. The practice of Feng Shui on the one hand is very complex and on another level it

can be very simple, natural and intuitive. Sometimes when I make a Feng Shui suggestion to a client they say, “That makes so much sense!” Or “That occurred to me but I didn’t follow through.”

You can begin a sup-portive relationship with

your home by creating the awareness that your home does affect your life in many ways. Acknowledge to yourself that how you feel in your living space is important and know that you can do something about it. Try this process for yourself:

Do something to quiet your mind and open your heart (like meditation, dancing or spend time outside connect-ing to nature).

Then approach your home from -

sion? How does the view of your home make you feel? Does it uplift you or bring you down? Does your body relax with a comforting feeling of home or do you tense up? Then go through each room and observe with out judgment. Notice your impressions, your emo-tions and the sensations in your body.

Ask your home/room/heart,

“What small change can I make to shift the energy of this space to bring sup-port and nourishment to my life?” The answer could be as simple as moving a piece of furniture, removing clutter, adding a colorful shawl to a couch, adding a light or opening the windows to let the air and sun shine in!

Have fun with this process and learn to trust your intuition. Remember Feng Shui (pronounced fung shway) rhymes with fun and play!

BEGIN TO SEE YOUR HOME THROUGH FENG SHUI EYES -PART 1A HOME CAN SUPPORT AND NOURISH YOUR LIFE

by Pernilla Lillarose

Can you feel that Energy inside that has had enough? Enough of destructive emotions, be-

liefs, behaviors and the impact it has on our world?

Me too! For a long time all I knew was to resist, and it didn’t solve the problem. It did cause tension, stress and exhaustion.

‘Thanks to’ a past re-

that resisting, defending and justifying wasn’t the solution. On the contrary, I saw how engaging in this madness only kept it going. As long as I participated by defending and resisting, all my energy went into keeping it alive.

It was all I knew back then, as I imagine is the case for most people.

The Veil of Illusion is Made of Resisting

We have all blindly lived in this veil of illusion for so long, that we didn’t even consider another way.

me that I didn’t want to spend my life resisting, defending and justifying myself, it was obvious that leaving the situa-tion was the best thing for all involved.

I felt a big, juicy, alive NO inside every cell of my body and

. After that it was simple. I just stopped.

Since I answered to this

NO, I started seeing through this veil of illusion that we’re all are stuck in—and its tricky and means to keep us stuck. Resisting is a BIG one. For Every Action, There is an Equal and Opposite Re-Action

Imagine some intruder trying to

get into your house. You run to the door and start pushing against it to keep them out. Unless they go away, you’ll have to spend the rest of your life pushing against the door to keep them out.

Exhausting?Newton said: For every action,

there is an equal and opposite re-action.

Now imagine this intruder to be a thought or feeling you don’t like. Instead of pushing against a physical door, now you are mentally/emotion-ally pushing against the ‘door of your Consciousness’ to keep thoughts and feelings out.

Familiar? Exhausting? I think you get the picture.

Say Yes to your No!

I w o u l d invite you to get in touch with the No in your body when you resist something and

lovingly listen to it.A clearly Felt No

will guide you into right action and will leave re-sistance biting the dust. You may end up leaving a situation, or plainly state with great confidence and peace that you don’t engage in that kind of behavior anymore.

Saying Yes to your No, is saying Yes to that

Energy that has had enough and is ready to create a new and better life.

It is time to embrace and embody ALL of who we are—including the parts inside that say No—including when others disagree.

There is a growing Tribe of No-sayers to what is not resonating with our deepest core values. You are welcome to join that Tribe anytime.

When the Human Light Body (Merkaba) is directly activated from the Sacred Space of the Heart, your life becomes interconnected with all Life everywhere and moves into Higher Consciousness naturally.

When we create from the brain, we get what we want and it’s exact opposite. Creation from the Unified Heart Field brings only

My blessing is to illuminate the path for you to amplify your light 1,000 times.

by Karuna Chapman

First of all, what is Ascension and who is ascending? Ascension is defi ned as the act of ascending;

to ascend is to move upward toward the source or beginning. I think of Ascension in terms of raising vibra-tion, moving from gross to subtle. Drunvalo Melchizedek says we got a bump on the head when Atlantis fell, and we moved from living in our hearts to living from our brains and believing we are the ego. He suggests that ascension is simply returning to our hearts, and by reconnecting the brain to the heart, our vibration becomes subtler and our lives move closer to Unity.

It is Mother Earth who will do the ascending into the fourth dimension and we as her dearly loved children will ALL be joining her. Yes, every single human being will be included in the move-ment. So why be concerned? Nothing to do but wait and enjoy the ride. After all we’re not going anywhere, we will still be living on Earth, so what’s the big deal?

In the fourth dimension, according to Drun-valo, we will be creating our own reality, much like we do here but with an important difference —whatever we think will become our reality immediately, no time lag. Hmmm. Well then, it could be important to understand exactly how the creation process works. Imagine waking up one day and every thought is manifest immediately. Could be a little scarey at fi rst, and that’s the

important time frame. If we are able to create from love for the fi rst fi fteen minutes after entering the fourth di-mension, we will create a stable and positive reality, and we’re in, we get to stay. If, however we go into fear, our fear becomes our reality, and our own fear will bring about our demise and speedy return to somewhere in the

third dimension..... again. To create from love and not from fear, to

create from a unifi ed fi eld instead of duality, one must be in a specifi c place in one’s heart. When creation takes place from here, only good can be created, and there is no negative backlash. The Vehicle of Ascension is the Merkaba or human Light Body. We all have the seeds of a Merkaba in the form of a geometric subtle energy fi eld, called the star tetrahedron, around our bodies. When the Heart is connected to our brain through specifi c glands, the Merkaba is activated and becomes our living vehicle.

If you have found this interesting, please consider joining us for four days of joyful remem-bering as we learn the creation process from the heart and permanently activate our Merkaba. The next Awakening the Illuminated Heart Workshop is Scheduled for July 17-20 in Santa Cruz California. Further details at www.karunasheart.com or www. drunavalo.net, (831) 684-1330. WHY CREATION IS AN IMPORTANT ELEMENT OF ASCENSION

TRUE OR FALSE? WILL A NAME CHANGEAFFECT YOU AND IF SO, HOW?by Joanne Justis

This is one of the most asked questions and so I want to devote this article to answering it. It is ABSOLUTELY true that a name

change will affect you—and it will affect you either in a negative or positive way. With that said, I should tell you up front as a Chaldean Master Numerologist, I personally do not promote name changes as the norm, but there are legitimate rea-sons why you would want to change your name. You will fi nd most Numerologists will jump at the opportunity to change your name or to tell you they can bring you success overnight by virtue of a name change which I will dispel later.

You may change your birth name many times over in your lifetime—either legally or not—for many reasons, or you may simply not like your birth name. What you don’t know is that we are all born with a god code/blueprint, or owner’s manual assigned to each one of us at birth which has been kept a secret until now.

When a name and birthdate are “inked” onto a birth certifi cate they form a blueprint that reveals your destiny/intellect, soul emotional de-sire, personality, purpose, mid-life goal, personal years, emotional and physical development areas, opportunities and life lessons. As you can see, this list is complete and each baby born then comes in assigned with Program “A.”

When you change your name, you are altering Program “A” and modifying the en-ergy frequencies only for what the name reveals because the components the birthdate reveal are permanent for life.

Further, it’s a 9-year process for the new name to resonate 100% with an individual at which time the new blueprint will become dominant and act as an overlay infl uence to the foundational blueprint. The name change will channel your life into new directions which can either enhance the characteristics of your original blueprint or not! In time, under continued use and habit, your “new” infl uences and patterns, for better or worse, will become the path forward

for you.The foundational

blueprint generally re-mains dormant yet active below the surface waiting to reassert itself if there is confl ict. But here’s the tricky part. For this to be a smooth transition from name-to-name, the names must be compatible. Exchanging letters means exchanging energy frequencies for each letter that is assigned in your name with a specifi c frequency, so the outcome can vary for this reason. In any case, if the names are not compatible, there will be internal power struggles whereby both blueprints, so to speak, vie for dominance and will surely create havoc in your life. Unfortunately, you will not know the chaos is the result of the name change.

Normally, a new name change gradually infl uences the characteristics of your life until you settle into the new name. As you use the new name, its effects on your experiences become more and more predominant. Whatever the reason is for a name change, it does in fact have either a negative or positive effect on you but most of the time, you go backwards when you give up Program “A” for Program “B”.

If you are interested in changing your name, my best advice is to test the compatibility of both names fi rst before making your fi nal deci-sion—consider this to be a long-term investment in yourself. Combining Chaldean Numerology (based on sound and phonics), modern computer technology and mathematics, we are able to de-code, decipher and extract the secrets that lie hidden within each name and birthdate “inked” onto a birth certifi cate.

Our hearts expand to meet this calling, and the voice of our souls within us grows stronger! All things done with sincerity of heart in love embody the grace of Divine Creation. Each step we take, each breath, each moment, we are enveloped in

Love beats within our hearts, washes over us, streams through us, creates

alone, and never a time unloved. We are born of Love. We are

Love! And, the beauty of this truth knows no bounds! Each moment, too, we have the miraculous, enchanted op-portunity to remind ourselves of this glorious reality, to open to its limitless bounty, and to embrace the power of our love to bless and transform our lives, the lives of others and our sen-tient and non-sentient world.

Our remembrance has been muddied, diffused and squelched by the demands of the human condition. We have not learned. We are unaware. We forget. We are afraid. We ignore. And, the power of this vast capac-ity for blessing through love remains untapped.

Love is the greatest of all gifts, the most potent of all powers, the force and grace through which all in

joy, of grace and devotion, of peace and wellbeing. We may strongly and lovingly hold for them the vision of the sweetness of their deepest dreams unfolding into form. We may cradle them deli-cately and faith-fully in the womb of our hearts.

In this, the love present ac-tivates its great

force and extends its power to be of service.planted and begin, steadfastly, devot-edly and blissfully to grow. All is blessed.

THE GREAT HOAXAfter seeing the Documentary film “Cancer

is Serious Business” by director Eric Meroila about a Dr. Burzynski who developed a cure for cancer and then was attacked by the FDA and other agents and agencies of the State, I began to realize that the “search” for a “cure” for cancer is a complete hoax. (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqJ_709pL5Y)

I think the entire medical paradigm on disease, that is, that drugs, chemotherapy and radiation are the best way forward and they are doing their best to always seek out, obtain and use the most advanced and effective treatment possible is a LIE. These industries don’t really want to CURE us.

Finding a cure is not anywhere near as profitable as TREATING THE SYMPTOMS. That is why they go after people who find CURES and ATTACK THEM.

While meditating and processing that sudden realization I began to ask myself what other hoaxes might be out there. I started thinking and counting. Let’s see, how about the “War on Drugs”? Seeing that major banking institutions like Wells Fargo and Bank of America were found guilty of laundering money for the Drug Cartels and no one went to jail (and everyone involved got bonuses) that looks like another hoax doesn’t it? How about the “War on Terror” ? With the obvious attacks by the government on ourselves and the Constitution, dehumanizing and sexual assaults at airports and the evidence of 9/11 being an “inside job” which was the justification for all this, it looks like this too is a hoax.

Do you remember that amazing trip to the moon back in 1969 when the US (who was WAY BEHIND the Russians) suddenly lept ahead after miraculously overcoming gigantic technical and scientific barriers, not to mention the impassable Van Allen Radiation Belt and “landed a man on the moon”?

Funny thing that, we have not been able to send

humans back there ever since. No colonies on the moon, no other human exploration of space for the 40+ years since then except for the International Space Station in a low earth orbit.

If you would like a little perspective on this one I suggest you go to Youtube and see the documentary “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Moon” if you want to experience the gravity of this hoax. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xciCJfbTvE4)

The “War on Poverty” under Johnson was another hoax. Do you think we won that one?

What do you think about the Cell Phone Industry’s claims that there is nothing to worry about regarding microwave radiation generated by the cell phones, cancer and other health problems? Maby we should go to www.stopsmartmeters.org and rethink that one. Evidence indicates that too is another hoax. Whether or not you get brain cancer could depend on what you decide to do.

How about Fluoride being good for preventing cavities? Have you ever actually looked at the EVIDENCE? Read “The Fluoride Deception” by Christopher Bryson or look at it on Youtube and you will realize that adding fluoride to our drinking water to prevent tooth decay is another hoax. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3y8uwtxrHo). Providing the aluminum and fertilizer industries that produce fluoride as a TOXIC WASTE BYPRODUCT a profitable means to dispose of their waste in our water supply is the real reason for that hoax. I could go on and on but I think you get my point, which is we are living in a MATRIX of one GIGANTIC HOAX! If you start to question, look up the facts and analyze the OFFICIAL PARADIGM of reality you will start realizing that we are living an illusion which is why we are having such a hard time these days. I think that waking up to this reality is the first order of business if we want to have any kind of sanity and mental clarity.

Megan Montero has done feng shui for me on two places I’ve lived and it has really helped. It’s too soon to say about the place I’m in now, but my last place I had a significant upturn in my work/money life and I met my sweetheart, I had good creative inspiration there, and I felt great in my home and others loved it too. There were some specific things Megan advised that I never would have thought of that made a b ig d i f ference in how I felt in my home and, seemingly, in my results in my life. I highly recommend Megan’s Feng Shui work. It’s very deep, rooted in tradition, and helpful.

I will always wonder why Tom Bowen didn’t allow his unique healing approach to be taught during his lifetime. As a Bowenwork

practitioner, I’ve often wished we could ask him about how he developed his technique. What was he thinking? What it was like for him when he started getting such amazing results?

Bowen Therapy (also known as Bowen-work® and Bowtech®) was developed by Tom Bowen (1916-1982) in Geelong, Australia. Starting in the 1950s, he began to test his unique healing approach while working as a masseur for local junior football clubs. He was largely self-educated; he did extensive reading and study of other modalities, studied for a time with an osteopath, and continued to treat athletes and workers with various illnesses and injuries to refi ne his technique. He eventually developed his own unique healing system, driven by his deep desire to alleviate suffering.

Mr. Bowen had an intuitive ability to ‘read’ the postural and energy imbalances in a person’s body, and taught himself just where to apply a series of gentle moves to release muscle tension and initiate the body’s own healing pro-cess. An acute observer, he noticed that particular moves in very precise locations on the body produced specifi c, predictable results. With the help of his friend and secretary, Rene Horwood, he opened his own clinic and, as word of his effectiveness spread, became a very busy man. In 1975 the government-instituted Webb Com-mittee of Inquiry into Chiropractic, Osteopathy and Naturopathy in Australia reviewed Tom Bowen’s work and found he was seeing some

13,000 people a year, achieving a success rate in his practice of over 80%.

Fortunately Mr. Bowen’s gift was not lost with his passing. In 1974 Oswald (Ossie) Rentsch attended a national health conference in Adelaide, Australia, hoping to fi nd relief for his wife’s chronic pain. There he met Tom Bowen, and asked if he could come learn from him. Mr. Bowen agreed. Thus began a life-changing journey for Ossie and Elaine Rentsch. For the next two and a half years, Mr. Rentsch worked with Mr. Bowen and studied his techniques while Elaine’s health improved.

In the last years of his life, Bowen al-lowed several practitioners to observe him and recognized six of them as truly understanding the work. Oswald Rentsch was one of those six. He carefully cataloged Mr. Bowen’s work, and promised to make it known around the world. True to his word, Ossie founded the Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia in 1987 with his wife, Elaine. Bowenwork is now taught in over thirty countries worldwide. In the next issue: “Bowenwork: how it works, what it does, where to fi nd it”.

Like the Bob Dylan song says, “One Should Not Be Where One Does Not Belong”. You

might fi nd yourself singing that song if you get into a class that is too advanced for you. Finding the yoga class that is right can take some research.

Yo u m i g h t ask yourself what are you looking for in a yoga class. Reliev-ing stress, alleviating back pain, becoming more fl exible: yoga can help with all of those issues. Some folks these days seem to want a workout. This is fi ne but only if you’re spot on with your align-ment and biome-chanics.

Historically yoga was more of a meditation prac-tice to discipline the mind and refi ne the nervous system. When hatha yoga became popular the meditation purists considered the fo-cus on the physical body with postures to be rather frivolous and a distraction from the original spiritual intent.

There are defi nite things to consider when you are looking for a class: your physical abili-ties and limitations, injuries old and new, to name just a couple factors. Age doesn’t need to be one of them but it often is.

Before one of my classes got underway, a col-lege age woman came to me look-ing distressed. She realized that she was about to reveal her preju-dice and struggled to put it politely. “Is this a class for…..” she stam-mered for a bit and I wasn’t go-ing to rescue her because I knew where she was going with this. It was the fi rst time I had the age card played and I have to say it annoyed me. I tried to al-

lay her fears of gray hair saying that my focus is on accurate alignment within each person’s

range of strength and fl exibility.

By going on-line you can get a lot of information about all the studios in the county and the many yoga teachers, their training, and their style of teaching. If you have injuries, it’s important to fi nd a teacher who has a solid understand-

ing of anatomy and has some experience with physical limitations. You can always call or email a teacher to ask questions and express your

concerns. Some yoga

t eache r s w i th beautiful bodies and poses have no idea how to teach bodies not so gifted. And s o m e y o u n g yoga teachers don’t know pain or limitation and feel that all bodies should be able to assume the pose

seen in the book. This is far from the truth and folks get hurt because of it. Most all yoga teach-ers have very good intentions and are teaching because they love yoga and wish to spread the word. However, it doesn’t mean they are effec-tive teachers.

Choosing the Yoga Class That is Right For You

T h e v a r i o u s gyms have yoga classes and they’re free with the membership. If the teacher is good, the class is usually crowded. Would you feel more comfortable in a large class where you could be more anonymous or a smaller venue so that you might have a better

chance of getting some personal attention from the teacher?

Go into a class having researched it as best as you can and let your teacher know if you have in-juries, limitations, or recent surgeries. As a teacher, I always try to remember to ask new people if they have any injuries I should know about. I’ll never forget the time I didn’t ask. A new student came up to me saying he felt it went well and that he had undergone heart surgery three months ago! That’s the kind of thing your yoga teacher would like to know before the class.

by “Prem” Mike EllisonWhere can you run along a

scenic river on a beautiful summer day and raise money to end hunger while

protecting the San Lorenzo watershed? June 22nd Santa Cruz CORE Fitness + Rehab is organizing the scenic 2nd Annual Santa Cruz River Run, a 1k, 5k and 10k race for runners and walkers of all ages to benefit both the Coastal Watershed Council and Grind Out Hunger. Santa Cruz CORE is inviting the community and local businesses to help cel-ebrate their 5th year by registering for the race and visiting the busi-nesses displaying their wares at the post race River Run Expo.

“Last year with the help of our sponsors, we were able to raise $10,000 for Grind Out Hunger. This year we hope to beat that goal, said Jaimi Elli-son founder of Santa Cruz CORE Fitness + Rehab, but we can’t

do that without your community help!”

This year ’s fun, family-friendly event will start at 8am and end in San Loren-zo Park. The expo will be held from 10am-12pm is free and open to the public

featuring a variety of local businesses. Runners will receive a T-shirt and goody bag as well as a free breakfast

of various items.

Dan-ny Keith of Grind Out H u n g e r , the Coastal Watershed C o u n c i l and Ellison are hoping to help re-invigorate the down-town area

& recapture the levee for a positive purpose, involving families in a day promoting healthy lifestyles and fun activities. The goal of the River Run is

the raise awareness about the ongoing problem of childhood hunger in Santa Cruz County and ultimately in the

world. The River Run aims to promote healthy communities and active life-styles to help add a safe, fun, commu-nity event to the heart of Santa Cruz, the San Lorenzo River and levee area, which has notoriously been known as an unsafe place to hang out.

Santa Cruz CORE Fitness + Rehab opened its doors 5 years ago to bring a “one stop wellness shop”

to Santa Cruz. “At CORE we foster health and fitness by creating a truly integrative support system gathering professionals from many fields under one roof. We assist people onto a path of optimal health, fitness, and recovery”, explains Ellison. CORE, an integrative wellness center located at 317 Potrero St. offers acupuncture, therapeutic massage, chiropractic care, therapeutic exercise, personal and group training, beach boot camps on our local beaches and nutritional/ supplementation counseling. Their small business success story continues to grow as clients spread the word of their personal success.

As passionate advocates of fit-ness and healthy lifestyles, Santa Cruz CORE initiated the Santa Cruz River Run to support building a healthy com-

munity and a healthy environment. That is why this year they have also partnered with The Coastal Water-

shed council as one of the non-profits which shall receive proceeds from the 2nd Annual River Run. “Their mis-sion of promoting a healthier and cleaner river-area perfectly aligns with CORE’s and by putting on community events like this charity race we are working to make it a safer and cleaner place, to bring a renewed life and sense of com-

munity to the downtown river area”, said founder Jaimi Ellison. Please check out www.santacruzriv-errun.com. If you are interested in making a tax-deductible donation or sponsoring the run by providing in-kind goods or monetary support, please e-mail [email protected] or call (831) 425-9500.

IF A FRIEND or colleague told you that you could - through a single practice -

develop a more focused mind, a more peaceful spirit and a more flexible and resilient body, would you be intrigued? Further, that you could do this without going on a long pilgrimage or even leaving town?

Aikido relies on finesse, not force, to resolve conflict and manage challenging situations. It asks us to make a connection with the person challenging us, and to respond in a way that redirects the force of the “attack” into a safe and respectful resolution. In studying and training in Aikido, we are asked to change our habit-ual response to conflict – to release the desire to win or to overpower opponents through force. Peace is the goal – safe landings for both parties.

Aiki is not a technique to fight or defeat an enemy. It is the way to reconcile the world and make human beings one family. --Aikido founder, Morihei Ueshiba Osensei

Founded in the 20th century in Japan, Aikido is a martial art, yet it is widely known as “The Art of Peace.” Aikido training makes use of effective techniques

from earlier martial arts, within a non-competitive practice that is at once challenging and fun, and accessible to people of all ages and genders.

If you choose to give Aikido a try, here are some basic strate-gies you will learn with your training partners on the mat. They are equally applicable “off the mat.”

Do no Harm: Protect both yourself and your adversary as you resolve the issue.

Go with the Flow: Align yourself with the direction of the movement so you can harness the power and redirect it safely.

Make the Connection: Locate the source of peace inside yourself and make a real connec-tion with the other person.

E x p a n d Awareness: Keep the big picture in mind as you deal with the spe-cific situation right in front of you.

Aikido of Santa Cruz, a local educa-tional nonprofit since 1982, offers classes for kids, teens and adults throughout the week. The two-month Beginning Class for

adults builds foundational skills and allows students to prepare for more advanced training if they choose to continue. The next Beginning Class starts Tuesday, January 3. The nor-mal cost of $120 will be reduced by 10% when you mention this article. Curious but unsure of your commitment? You can try out the first two classes for free!

Aikido of Santa Cruz is located at 306 Mission Street, very near downtown, at the inter-section of Mission and Chestnut Streets. Visitors welcome! Call (831) 423-8326, email [email protected], or visit www.aikidosantacruz.org.

by Trevor Caruso, Rolf S.I. Therapist and Internal Martial Artist

When I began my training in internal martial arts, I was often told to tuck the tailbone under to straighten and elongate the spine. Little did I know that the way in which we go about this can be detri-mental to our health and practice.

In the art of Wujifa, there is a saying, ‘relax the lower back, ingui-nal creases in’. For ones structure to maintain a functional connection, the body must be relaxed; this is where we find balance. Balance, structure and relaxation are all interrelated aspects of functional movement. This is a basic level of understanding in Wujifa. Relaxed is not limp, structure is not rigid, and balance is not static.

‘Straightening’ the lower back can have a dramatic advantage in applying force to an object, whether we’re pushing a car or in a martial application. So why, if we are to straighten the spine as we exert force, is tucking detrimental? There are two main reasons: health and function. Wujifa teaches ways to relax the spine by noticing various holding patterns. Remember, relaxed is not limp! This is often misunderstood. Tucking the tail-bone sacrifices mobility and adds more tension in the system. If we are able to relax and allow the spine to straighten, then there are a few things that happen in the body which involve a very com-

plex relationship of parts. This is often achieved through stance practices such as Zhan Zhuang (a type of standing meditation), where the practitioner may delve deeply into the holding patterns of their body and discovers what it means to relax without sac-

rificing structure. Many people tuck to straighten the back because they are unable to let go of various tensions, especially in the quadratus lumborum and the buttocks area, where the lateral rotators of the femur connect to the pel-vis and coccyx.

Tensing these mus-cles compromises functional move-ment of the dantian area by ‘popping’ the inguinal crease (the kua) out. In order for the dan-tian to ‘rotate’ in movement, the in-guinal creases must be able to traverse between open and close, freely. To do this, one must dis-cover relaxation of the lateral rotators to allow these femur heads to move freely. This is an essential aspect of freeing the abdominal area. There are many paths to do this, such as stand-ing meditation, movement exercises which encourage discovery of holding patterns, bodywork, or other modali-

ties. A healthy spine is able to either straighten or curve in a relaxed, con-nected and functional way depending on the task at hand.

In order to discover what we mean by relax we can create certain parameters which, like signposts, can point to the door, but it’s up to you to walk through it. Walking through the door of relaxation may begin by simply noticing our holding patterns. Noticing connection is one of the fun-damental principles of Wujifa practice. If we are unaware of the tensions in our bodies, then they may continue unchecked. This is why standing medi-tation exercises are the foundation of many martial arts practices. In this instance, noticing the tensions we hold in the back, and lateral rotators can

open up the door to letting that ten-sion dissolve. Here we may find more freedom and ease in our movement. Trevor Caruso is a Rolf Structural In-tegration Therapist and owner of Mir-ror Gate Integrative Therapy in Santa Cruz County. He’s

studied internal martial arts and other healing and awareness practices since 1993. He currently teaches ongoing Wujifa classes in Santa Cruz and Ap-tos. For Rolf sessions or Wujifa class registration call (831) 325-3587 or visit MirrorGateIntegrativeTherapy.com

Here are my reviews of some recent shows. Remember this is only my opinion.

At Coasters: The Devil Himself played after a year off and was more precise than ever. This high energy alternative metal 4-piece, had Jason Goldberg back pounding the pagan skins after back surgery and a big thank

you to newest member, Jared Neilson who deviled up plucking the strings o’ bass in true tDH style. And always in impressive form Dan Burnham on guitar and vocals and fearless leader David Christensen on lead vocals and guitar. No wonder why they have such a loyal following. Freakin’ awesome show!

At Chaminade: At the “BBQ, Beer & Blues Memorial Day Celebration” The Vinny Johnson Band played fun danceable music with new band mates, Keith Wieland on drums, Andy Jons-son on bass and Jan Hagge on a Nord keyboard with drawbars creating that distinct Hammond B3 Organ sound. The keyboard lends itself to being able to play other songs like “Green Onions”, adding another dimension to VJB. Of course, Vinny is so good he plays rip-pin’ guitar for several other bands and on multiple CD’s for many local artists. If you see his name you know you will hear first-rate music.

At Crow’s Nest: Room 9 per-formed at the “Second Annual Benefit Beach BBQ Party” to honor the fallen SCPD officers Baker and Butler. Un-fortunately, there were not many people at it, no fault of Room 9 who did an excellent job playing music you don’t hear often enough like Johnny Cash, Sublime and The English Beat. The keyboards and bongos added many layers to the music.

Are you a local band that would like your CD reviewed in this publication? Send your CD to Music Connection, c/o Janet Leonard, PO Box 1151, Aptos CA 95001. Each month, we select our favorite or otherwise important films to be featured on this page. We

rate them, subjectively, on a scale from 1 (worthless) to 5 (awesome) in terms of their entertainment and message. We leave the plot details and storytelling to the filmmakers and instead attempt to characterize, highlight strengths and flaws, and hint at purpose. Reach us at [email protected]. Enjoy!BlendedWith Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Wendi McLendon-CoveyEntertainment: 3.5 Message: 3

Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler star in their third romantic comedy

together, and there is plenty here to like, even though there are certainly

flaws —most crit-ics passionately hated this movie. Certainly no great achievement, but it made us laugh, a lot. Despite a

fairly trite plot, stereotyping, clichés, and schmaltz at times, it was still quite heart-warming and fun—and easy to enjoy a vicarious tour of S. Africa. Any-one who has experienced a “blended” family in their own life will probably relate well to the many challenges and hilarious moments. Barrymore and Sandler do have their very own chemistry and charm, which work well here, once again. The beautiful nature and animal scenes add much to the appeal (1 hr 57 min).GodzillaWith Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan CranstonEntertainment: 2.5 Message: 2

While amazing digital ef-fects turn the campy,

earlier Japanese version into a 21st Century extravaganza, the plot complication of too many monsters is confusing and detracts from the impact of Godzilla’s presence and power. There is so much going on here that it is hard to keep track of the storyline (you may be asking yourself “what sto-ryline?”). Potentially laudable environmental messages get lost in the turbulence of action, and cataclysmic scale of it all. Even the substantial cast can’t save the essence of Godzilla. A missed opportunity to drive home a cautionary tale, while preserving the original appeal of the Japanese, ground-shaking masterpiece. That said, if its big monster action you’re after, you’ll get that here—especially in the last 20

or so minutes (2 hrs 3 min).Maleficent With Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Sharlto CopleyEntertainment: 4.5 Message: 3.5

Powerful, visually stunning and transformative, this retelling and

backstory to the Grimm’s beloved “Sleeping Beauty” fairy tale, orga-nizes itself around Angelina Jolie’s magnetic performance as uber-fairy, Maleficent. Never has the charismatic actress been more darkly beautiful and commanding, while at the same time revealing the vulnerable heart of the Wounded Feminine. Updated from her previous Disney movie in-carnations, Maleficent represents the archetype of nature scorned, rather than the previous “evil” sorceress. The lovely Elle Fanning (Dakota Fanning’s sister) as Princess Aurora, delightful digital Fairy Folk and mythical nature creatures (even the trees get into the act), which seem reminiscent of Lord of the Rings, captivate and enhance the spell (1 hr 37 min). X-Men: Days of Future PastWith Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh JackmanEntertainment: 4 Message: 4

Brilliantly executed and gripping, this may well be the best of the

series. Visiting the past, discovering the early “future history,” and meeting the well-known characters’ younger selves deliver a whole new perspec-tive – a treat all by itself. Some cannabis growers may soon find themselves with a lot less irrigation water if the U.S. gov-

ernment decides to block the use of federal water for state-legal marijuana cultivation.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, which oversees management of federal water resources, “is evaluating how the Controlled Substances Act applies in the context of Reclamation project wa-ter being used to facilitate marijuana-related activities,” said Peter Soeth, a spokesman for the bureau. He said the evaluation was begun “at the request of various water districts in the West.”

Local water districts in Wash-ington state and Colorado, where recreational marijuana is now legal, contract with federal water projects for supplies. Officials from some of those water districts said they assume the feds are going to turn off the spigots for marijuana growers.

“Certainly every indication we are hearing is that their policy will be that federal water supplies cannot be used to grow marijuana,” said Brian Werner at Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District, which handles approximately one-third of all water for northeastern Colorado and is the Bu-reau of Reclamation’s second-largest user in the number of irrigated acres.

Washington state’s Roza Irrigation District, which supplies federal water to approximately 72,000 acres in Yakima and Benton counties, has already is-sued a “precautionary message” to water customers that may be involved in state-legal cannabis growing.

“Local irrigation districts operating federal irrigation projects have recently been advised that under Federal Rec-lamation Law, it is likely project water cannot be delivered and utilized for purposes that are illegal under federal law,” wrote Roza district manager Scott Revell in letters to the Yakima and Benton county commissioners. “Pre-sumably growing marijuana would fall into this category.”

Both Washington and Colorado legalized marijuana for medical use more than a decade ago. Pot remains illegal under federal law. Reclamation’s Soeth said that the issue of cutting off water supplies for marijuana has never come up before.

A Department of Justice official told HuffPost it has no comment on the water issue. The Bureau of Reclama-tion is likely to announce a decision this month. “We’re going to work with our water districts once that decision is made,” Soeth said.

Marijuana advocates condemned the possibility of a federal water ban for state-legal crops. Mason Tvert, communications director for Mari-juana Policy Project and key backer of Amendment 64, which legalized mari-juana for recreational use in Colorado, criticized the hypocrisy of a federal government that would prevent water access to some legal businesses and not others.

“If water is so precious and scarce that it can’t be used for state-legal mari-juana cultivation, it shouldn’t be used for brewing and distilling more harmful intoxicating substances like beer and liquor,” Tvert said.

The impact on Washington may be more severe, since the state’s mari-juana laws allow for outdoor growing and, according to McClatchy, the Bu-reau of Reclamation controls the water supply of about two-thirds of the state’s irrigated land. In Colorado, marijuana businesses can only grow indoors.

Indoor growing in Denver, home to the majority of Colorado marijuana dispensaries, likely wouldn’t notice a shortage if the Bureau of Reclamation cuts off federal water.

“Because we are not a federal contractor, we would not be affected,” said Travis Thompson, spokesman for Denver Water, the main water authority for the state’s capital and surrounding suburbs.

But many other regions of the state rely on federal water. In Pueblo, about two hours south of Denver,

about 20 percent of regional water is Reclamation-controlled. Although the remaining 80 percent of the region’s water is locally controlled, it passes through the Pueblo Dam, operated under Bureau of Reclamation authority.

“Yes, they come through a federal facility, but the federal facility is required to let those water right to pass,” Pueblo Board of Water Works executive direc-tor Terry Book said to southern Colo-rado’s NBC-affiliate KOAA.

The St. Charles Mesa Water Dis-trict, another Pueblo-area water facility, has already imposed a moratorium on supplying water to marijuana busi-nesses until the Bureau of Reclamation settles the issue.

The Bureau of Reclamation said its facilities deliver water to 1.25 million acres of land in Colorado and 1.2 mil-lion acres in Washington state. About 1.6 million acre-feet of water is deliv-ered to Colorado’s agricultural sector from Reclamation and about 5 million acre-feet is delivered to agriculture in Washington.

As McClatchy reported last month that there are several viable alterna-tives to using federal water. Small-scale marijuana-growing operations may be able to use city-controlled water sourc-es, or drill a well. Greenhouse growers are allowed to use up to 5,000 gallons of well water per day under state law. Any use beyond that requires a permit from the state. While some marijuana plants can require an average of six gallons of water per day, growing op-erations in the state are likely to fall well within that limit.

However, in areas of the state where much of the water is controlled by Bureau of Reclamation contracts, these alternatives aren’t as accessible.

The potential water ban has already set off local opposition. The Seattle Times’ editorial board urged the Bureau of Reclamation to allow federal water contracts to be used by marijuana farmers.

“The bureau has never had — nor should it have — a stake in what crop

is planted. That’s a basic tenet of the 1902 National Reclamation Act, which created the bureau and transformed the arid American west,” read the May 4 editorial. “Yet the federal govern-ment is now threatening to forget that history, because some regulators are queasy about Washington and Colo-rado’s experimentation with marijuana legalization.”

As the Times’ board points out, there is some precedent for the Jus-tice Department to stand down on the water issue. Last August, Attorney General Eric Holder told the governors of Washington and Colorado that the DOJ wouldn’t intervene in the states’ legal pot programs. And earlier this year, federal officials issued guidelines expanding access to financial services for legal marijuana businesses, so long as the business doesn’t violate certain legal priorities outlined by the Justice Department.

“While we appreciate how the Obama administration has made some administrative concessions to the majority of voters who support legaliza-tion by issuing banking guidelines and having the Justice Department largely stand out of the way of state implemen-tation, this water issue highlights the urgent need to actually change federal law,” Tom Angell, chairman of Marijua-na Majority, told The Huffington Post. “There are bills pending in Congress that would solve this and other state-federal marijuana policy discrepancies, but so far the support from elected officials doesn’t even come close to matching the support from the public. I expect that gap will shrink with each passing election cycle as politicians start to see just how popular this issue is with voters.”
