CONNECTIONS Spring Retreat Anchors Away! The SBIA family set sail from the Parktown Hotel in Saskatoon on a Cruise ship March 16 and returned to home port on the afternoon of March 17. Ports of call were in Greece, where we had a delicious dinner Saturday evening, followed by a stop in the Middle East where we were entertained by dancers. Even more entertaining was the audience participation. We also had a stop in India where Samya Vellani and friends decorated hands with Mendhii artwork. During the evening social passengers were able to have photos taken on the ship’s deck or play deck games like Plinko, Ring Toss, Jelly Bean Guess, Steeple Chase to win prizes. On Sunday morning, after breakfast we hit Latin America and took in a modified Zumba class. Likely more calories were burned laughing at ourselves and each other than from the actual fitness class. Captain Glenda James welcomed everyone to the ship after registration and a salad and sandwich buffet lunch on Saturday. She also introduced the Cruise Ship Recreation and Event Planner, Tracey Monette.

Tracey introduced the first speaker to the survivors; Maureen Paydli Hall, a Speech Language Pathologist at Saskatoon City Hospital. Maureen presented on Social Interactions following Brain Injury. The survivor group was very engaged in what Maureen had to share and was happy to take part in the social interactions practice. There were lots of questions and dialogue.

Meanwhile, the families and caregivers were in another meeting room with Launel J. Scott, Area Director for Bayshore Home Health discussing the topic Taking Care of Each Other. Maureen Paydli Hall then joined the caregivers session.

Craft time involved decorating paper wristwatches. They were beyond fabulous! During free time, people played cards, worked on the watches, napped, and visited. For many folks, the social interaction is the best part of the retreat.

“Ahoy!” From the Spring Retreat Cruise

The day ended on a high note with supper, entertaining dancing and wrapped up with Cruise Ship games.

After a wonderful breakfast, we were inspired by the story shared by to Heather and Emilia Becker. Emilia and her brothers were injured in an accident in October 2006 when the school bus they were in ran a yield sign. Emilia and Heather spoke together in an integrated presentation from both an injured daughter and her caregiver mother’s point of view. It was truly inspiring and humbling.

The retreat ended with lunch following a Latin dance-inspired workout – Zumba!

After lots of pats on the back, handshakes and hugs, all the passengers departed for home.

More photos can be found on the SBIA Facebook Page.

In Memoriam – Judy Paradis

1

We are saddened to lose a friend from the Saskatchewan Brain Injury family.

Judy Paradis passed away Saturday, December 29, 2012, at the age of 64 in Prince Albert.

She left to celebrate her life, her husband Claude; daughter Micheline, sisters and brothers, nieces and nephews and good friends.

2

After Judy was no longer able to work, she joined the Prince Albert Chapter of SBIA. She looked forward to the walk each year and liked nothing better than attending camp at Arlington Beach with Micheline or Pat Jenkins. Judy and Micheline celebrated her 60th birthday in 2008 at camp.

Like many survivors at camp, Judy appreciated the break from everyday struggles, home care and isolation. She welcomed the fresh air, activities like horseback riding, canoeing, garage sales and connecting with new and old friends.

She will be remembered for her kindness, generous spirit, sense of humour and love of animals.

For his tireless volunteer work, Good will be one of eight people in Saskatchewan to receive the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal this year.

While SBIA is honoured to receive the majority of Good’s volunteer hours since he started with us in 1993. He is a busy man and many organizations in Southern Saskatchewan benefit from his loyalty and dedication.

Good has been an active volunteer in Saskatchewan since his family returned in 1992. In addition to SBIA, Good volunteers with Wascana Rehabilitation Centre in Regina, Knights of Columbus (he was instrumental in the adopt-a-highway program), Brain Tumor Foundation of Canada, Brain Injury Association of Canada, Pioneer Lodge, Special Olympics, Meals on Wheels in Qu’Appelle and his church.

2

The former military man has a way with numbers and served as treasurer with many organizations over the years, everything from

Boy Scouts to Moose Jaw’s Chapter of SBIA. Not only is Good the treasurer for Moose Jaw Chapter of SBIA, after attending

Chapter meetings in Regina he started the Moose Jaw Chapter five years ago.

In addition to his volunteer work with organizations, Good has helped fellow brain injury surviors research, find and apply for benefits and tax breaks.

Accompanying Good to the ceremony are his wife Kathy, their

daughter April, his sister and nominator Leanne, and good friend Barb Butler. Those being honoured will have the medals presented to them April 23, 2013 at Government House, in Regina.
