Mrs. Rohr’s Family Consumer Science Class

It was so fun having lunch in Mrs. Rohr’s classes this month. They planned a menu with their special guest’s dietary likes and dislikes as well as any allergies. The students were judged on taste, warmth of the food, if all the food groups were represented as well as presentation. A yummy time was had by all.

Message from the Health Department

Dear Parents, We need your input on the Health and Wellness of our students! Last year, DCSD received a large Planning Grant from Colorado Health Foundation in an effort to assess how the district supports students through the lens of the Whole School Whole Community, Whole Child model WSCC. The mission of this grant is to review the current state of the district’s student health and wellness program, and then to formulate a 3-5 year plan, based on stakeholders’ needs, latest research and best practices. To meet a requirement of this grant we would like you to complete this survey

DCSD Creating Healthy Schools Planning Grant - Parent Survey.

Our goal is to enhance the amazing health initiatives currently in our schools, and develop more opportunities to improve students’ overall well-being. Districts throughout Colorado are also doing this work, as the link between student health and success in academics and in life is well studied. What: Parent Survey When: November 1st-30th How: Online, anonymous, no individual student or parent data will be collected Why: Your input will shape the strategic plan for a comprehensive student health and wellness program If you want to know more, please contact Laurie LaComb, DCSD Healthy Schools Coordinator at: [email protected] or Lisa Kantor, Director, Health, Wellness, and Prevention at [email protected] With Gratitude, Lisa Kantor, Health, Wellness & Prevention Director Laurie LaComb, Healthy Schools Coordinator

Dia de los Muertos in our Spanish Classes

On November 1st and 2nd, students in Spanish classes at RVMS participated in learning about Días de los Muertos, or Days of the Dead. Day of the Dead is a holiday that is mostly celebrated in Mexico and is a time to remember those that have passed away. It is a very positive and joyous celebration. Students participated in various class activities including scavenger hunts, crafts, trying pan de muerto (bread of the dead) and dressing up/face painting. A huge thank you to those that contributed craft supplies and brought in bread! Names of students pictured are Emma Van Roekel, Jordan Pena, Carson Railsback, Aurora Wilson, and Owen James.

Celebrating a Month of Gratitude!

Studies have shown that individuals who show gratitude can experience increased happiness, stronger relationships, higher self-esteem, and have a better outlook on school and life. As we move into the month of giving thanks, we are focusing on how we all can be more grateful in our lives! Through classroom lessons, videos, discussions, and visits from TRHS Peer Counselors, our students (and staff!) have been expressing their gratitude for those around us. We encourage you to explore ways of sharing and recognizing gratitude with your student at home. Below are some great activities you can do at home, school or your workplace to spread your gratitude! We are all so grateful for the amazing families and support we have at RVMS! Thank you for all you do for our awesome students! https://www.wikihow.com/Express-Gratitude

Student Wellness and Prevention Framework Focuses on Healthy Relationships for November For the month of November, the Student Wellness and Prevention Framework is focusing on "Healthy Relationships," with an emphasis on relationships with adults, friendships, and dating. As we work towards promoting student wellness in all areas, we want to ensure that every student at RVMS knows what healthy relationships look like. Children and teens are like sponges and often strive to be mirror images of what is present in the media, reality T.V. and occasionally in unhealthy adults around them. They may witness disagreements between parents, see older siblings model poor choices, or immerse themselves with what Hollywood portrays as truth. Regardless of the circumstances, when youth are not afforded many opportunities to witness healthy relationships, they are more likely to continue negative patterns of behavior. However, when children and teens know and understand what healthy relationships look like, they’re likely to break that cycle that may otherwise lead towards bullying, school violence, substance abuse, and suicide. We encourage you to discuss this month’s topic of "Healthy Relationships" with your student. Feel free to visit the Student Wellness and Prevention Framework for more resources related to this topic. https://www.dcsdk12.org/prevention-and-school-culture

October/November Athletics

8th Grade Tackle Football For the first time in 3 years, Ranch View had its own tackle football team this year. The boys worked hard all season and finished as the #3 team in the district and earned a spot in the playoffs. They lost to the eventual champs but put up a great fight! The coaches are extremely proud of all of them and the tradition they renewed at Ranch View.

7th Grade Flag Football With only 3 days of practice, the 2017 "air" wolves launched their season with a loss. A/B teams played a close game before losing. C team, still new to the game of flag football lost also. With the new rule change of "3 second count". All 3 teams struggled to stop the defensive line from sacking the quarterbacks. The Wolves got back on the winning track in the new few weeks, winning games, some in blowouts, last second touchdown passes and heartbreaking overtime losses. The winning streak was due to the defensive play and effort of Adam Hess, nose guard which we lost due to injury for the remainder of the season.

The selection committee put the Wolves in the 8th seed vs MRMS. On the frozen tundra of the Cimarron field, the Wolves returned the opening kickoff back for a touchdown. The game was back and forth with Moun-tain Ridge taking the lead. A well-executed offensive series put the Wolves back in front before a late inter-ception finally put Mountain Ridge up, winning the game 20-12.

Continued on next column…….

7th Grade Flag Football

In the second game, the Wolves had ran out of gas and fell to Mesa Middle School. Coaches Ardoruel and Murrell were pleased with the effort of all 3 teams. Our motto for this year was "Be Coachable + Work Hard+ Have Fun"= RVMS flag football

7th Grade Volleyball

The 7th and 8th grade volleyball seasons were a success in so many ways! The girls worked so hard on improving their skills and also in their teamwork while keeping it fun. Tie-dye t-shirts were created to build team unity, which they wore on game days. They also donated fleece and made over 60 blankets to children in need through the Project Linus organization!
