The rotating laser has become a well ac-cepted tool for grade checking and
control of machinery in construction andagriculture. The basic principle of a rotatinglaser creating a flat or tilted plane of light, which serves as a grade reference, hasbecome a common sight. As with manytechnologies, the laser started changing

ways of working such that costs could bereduced significantly, and work could bedone much quicker and more efficient. Totake the benefits even further, it is neces-sary to look beyond the technology, andlook at more integrated solutions. Inte-grated solutions in the sense of technol-ogy independent solutions, but also inte-
grated solutions in the sense of changingor adapting ways or working, and projectprocesses. This booklet will provide youwith an overview of solutions that TOPCONcan offer for jobsite automation, both basedon applying and integrating different tech-nologies, as well as more integrated workprocesses.

Construction Jobsite Automation
Every construction jobsite is like oper-ating a manufacturing process, differ-
ent steps and phases, all closely interrelat-ing and the next depending on the previ-ous.
To optimize the entire flow of activities inthis process, to increase productivity andto reduce operating costs, an important keyis the automation and optimization of posi-tioning and control works on your jobsite.
Data management, staking and control arethe critical factors in realizing the work as it
is planned to. Likeany production proc-ess, the different
phases are interfaced, connected via thedesign data. Controlling this process in anefficient way immediately offers productiv-ity increase, and huge cost reductions onmany fronts.
Critical to offering a complete jobsite auto-mation solution, is the efficient use of yourdesign data, and the integration of surveyand staking works throughout the execu-
tion process. This means a close tie in be-tween survey works and machine control, and a seamless data flow throughout thedifferent phases of the project.

equipment
TOPCONs System V is built aroundan easy to operate control boxwhich is mounted in the cabin, andserves as the operators interface tothe system. In this box, he can setthe desired cross slope and eleva-tion values to which the system willthen work. The Control box receives
the signals from all mounted sen-sors (cross slope, mainfall, rotation, sonic, laser etc).
The control box automatically sendssteering signals to the hydraulicvalves of the machine, to steer theblade. At any time the operator canswitch between automatic andmanual control via the flip of aswitch on the box, or the auto/manual switches. The power of System V is it´s modu-lar, building block design. You caneasily add sensors later, and easilyupgrade to sonic, laser, sonic aver-aging or 3D control.
TM-1 Telescoping Mast and LS-B2
TOPCON offers a choice ofmasts. The unique Trackerjackspecifically designed formotorgraders, and the TM-1telescoping mast.
The TM-1 is the most accuratemast in the industry allowingfor 1 mm increments!Itâs solid, durable design guar-antees the best perform-ance under heaviest condi-tions, and together withTOPCONâs LS-B2 laser sen-

sors it offers true Millimeteraccurate elevation control forthe smoothest result and op-timum material usage.
Itâs the fastest, most durableand accurate mast available.
In case the use of a laser is not practical, asonic tracker can be used to measure el-evation reference instead of the laser. Thisallows you to use the system in applica-tions with vertical curves like road construc-tion.
The sonic tracker is a device that producessound waves at an approx. 25Hz rate, meas-
uring distances to an existing pavement, curb or gutter or for instance a stringline. This non contacting way of measuring isideal in for instance road construction ap-plications.
â Dozer Systems
Typical automatic bulldozer control can bedone in different ways, depending on theapplication. A dual laser set up is very com-mon, allowing the machine to fine gradequickly large areas. Using TOPCONâs TM-1telescoping masts with 1 mm (!) resolution
in combination with the 1 mm accurateLS-B2 laser sensors offers the most accu-rate system available.
Another set up for a Dozer would be to usea slope sensor and one laser receiver.TOPCON offers a wide range slope sensorthat is able to handle slopes from -100% to+100%, allowing you to fine grade even thesteepest slopes.
â Grader Systems
Most used grader controls come with acombination of a laser receiver and a slopesensor. TOPCON has developed the uniqueâTrackerjackâ mast specifically for graders;this mast is designed such that instead likewith a telescoping mast where the mast
moves up and down, the mast is fixed, andonly the receiver moves up and down.
This offers the benefit of having all moving(and therefore expensive) parts connectedto the laser receiver, which can be easilytaken off when the machine is stored atnight or over the weekend.
â Introduction
The most obvious step in automatingyour jobsite, is to use automatic grade
controls on your machine, to eliminate theneed for manual grade checking and tooptimize material usage.
This immediately leads to productivity in-crease, material savings and quality in-crease.
Based on staked out control points, exist-ing surfaces or stringline, you can take el-evation and cross slope reference using la-ser or sonic sensors.
The laser and sonic signals are directly usedto control the hydraulics of the machine tosteer the cutting edge of the blade or thescreed.
When mounting an automatic control sys-tem, various sensors to measure all ma-chine movements and a separate hydraulicmanifold are being installed. The additionalhydraulics allows for the automatic systemto work parallel to the standard machine
hydraulics without inter-fering and always guaran-teeing a quick and undisturbedswitching between automatic andmanual control.
Using a rotating laser, a reference plane oflight is generated to which a laser receivermounted on the machineâs blade will con-tinuously reference itself.
When using two laser receivers, a horizon-tal, single or dual graded plane can begraded with a dozer, grader or dragscraperwith great ease and speed.
No more manual grade checking, smoothest possible end result andoptimisation of material use. Dependingon your application, instead of a secondlaser receiver, a slope sensor can bemounted on the blade of the machine.
3 Dimensional Machine Control
A Standard TOPCON System V can beupgraded easily to a complete 3D MCcontrol system. For 3D Control, aWindowsCE based, colour display 3Dbox holds the digital jobdesign, andgives the driver an extremely userfriendly âMachine-â interface.
The control box is equipped with atouch screen. Unique features includethe capability to select a variety ofviews; the driver can see exactly wherehe is on the âvirtual jobsiteâ and canselect top, side, cross and long sec-tion views. Important feature also in-
cludes the planning screen, which givesan estimation of best achieveable ac-curacy during the various parts of theday. Ideal for planning your work basedon available satellites! And with the flipof a switch can be used for 2D sonicand laser control as well.
Jobsite data is loaded with a PCMCIAcard, and data is stored in the boxâs in-ternal memory.
GPS+ based elevation and cross slopecontrol is available basically for all Sys-tem V equipped machines, offeringaccuracies at the +/- 1 to 3 cm level.

TOPCONâs System V Paver box isthe single box version of the dualbox.
The System V Single box will con-trol elevation or cross slope, it willrecognize automatically which sen-sor is connected.
On a paver, profiler or concretescreed, two boxes are mounted oneither side of the screed. Clear LCDdisplays give the operator all con-
trols he needs, and an optional ver-sion is available where the opera-tor can flip a switch, and check andcontrol settings of the other controlbox, mounted on the other side ofthe screed.
This system can be used with la-ser, sonic, sonic averaging systemwith multiple trackers to replace themechanical ski, and 3D LPS or GPS.

When carefully considering the con-struction building process, it is odd
that digital survey and design data which isavailable to the engineer who created thejobdesign, is being manually âhammeredâin the terrain to serve as grade referencestakes. Why not immediately include the digitaljobsdesign in the machine?! This will offerhuge survey and engineering savings, andmuch less chance of human errors due tomanual staking.
The principle of 3 Dimensional machinecontrol is that the engineerâs design is di-rectly loaded on a control unit in the cabinof the machine. A sensor mounted on themachine can now continuously measure itsactual position, and compare this to theengineers jobdesign data. The difference
between the two can then automatically becorrected for via automatic hydraulic con-trol of the blade !
3D MC offers the ultimate automation on ajobsite as it ties in the survey with the ac-tual execution. This offers significant sav-ings as survey stake out is reduced to aminimum, quality is safeguarded to its maxi-mum as the entire jobsite design can beeasily stored in the machineâs controller, andproductivity is increased dramatically ascomplex jobs can now be done with thesame speed and ease as simple ones.
There is no reason why a 24 hour a dayproduction cycle would not be achieveable!
â Paver Systems
The sonic tracker was initially designed forPaver systems in road applications. Itâs theideal non contacting reference for road jobs, and is built sturdy and solid.TOPCONâs paver systems are designedsuch that you can easily swap componentsfrom one side to the other, using easy touse control boxes on either side of thescreed, that automatically detect whetherlaser, sonic or slope sensor are connected.Solid cables with military style metal con-nectors, like on all TOPCON control sys-tems, further characterize the system.
â Excavator Control Systems
An excavator is a slightly different machineto control. All moving parts need to bemeasured and this is done via highly accu-rate rotation sensors, that are mounted onsafe places on boom and stick.
TOPCONâs Touch Series V is the only sys-tem available that offers a choice betweenindicate and automatic control of thebucket. Simply input the desired slope anddepth, and the operator just has to pull thehandle.
Automating your excavator in this way of-fers huge benefits in material savings, pro-ductivity increase, and especially (with orwithout 3D GPS) in applications where theoperator cannot see the bucket or has todig blind.
TS-5 works with a robust touch screen withsimple operation structure ; by just press-ing the screen you can select workingmodes, enter values etc.
The system keeps the bucket to desireddepth and slope. Elevation reference caneither be taken from stakes, laser or GPS.

GPS+ control of an excavator is possi-ble using TOPCONâs TS-5 automaticexcavator control systems, whichmeasures all movements of boom, stick and bucket.
With TS-5 it is possible to control thebucket fully automatically; just pull thelever and the system will keep thebucket on grade! By combining TS-5with an external control unit holding thedigital jobdesign, and using two GPS+receivers, you have a fully 3D auto-
mated excavator system that allowsyou to accurately control grade, andaccurately manage your machine
GPS+ Excavator Control
across a jobsite. Ideal for all finishingapplications and especially for thoseapplications where you cannot see the
bucket. The two GPS+ receivers useadvanced calculation algorithms to ac-curately calculate all rotations of themachine, so there is no need to con-nect additional rotation sensors, gyroâsor compasses.
The combination of TS-5 with GPS isideal for basically all finishing and dig-ging applications, especially thosewhere one cannot see the bucket andfor instance needs to dig to predefinedslopes of profiles.
â Machine mounted Control Box
The System 5 3D Control box, is aWindowsCE operated touch screen com-puter that holds the digital jobdesign, whichcan be easily loaded via PCMCIA card andstored on the boxâs internal memory.
The principle of designing the box has beento provide the maximum possible controland information, but the interface was de-signed such, that operation remains sim-ple and clear.
Easy to understand drop down menuâs areavailable by just touching the screen, giv-ing the operator a choice of views of themachine in the current design (top down, side view, cross sections etc), and for in-stance display the design data as complete,or as basic as required.
Important features of the software are easyview and checking of control point data, spot elevation measurements using theblade, and immediate switching between2D and 3D Control.
Very valuable is also the satellite plot func-tion which shows all available satellites, and
especially the accuracy chart, where ex-pected accuracy (as a result of satellite avail-ability during the day) is charted for everyminute of any day. Ideal to plan your workas efficient as possible !
The 3D Box will adjust itself to available lightautomatically, giving the best possible dis-play even in bright sunny conditions.
â Checking and Control Software
Before being able to work with GPS coor-dinates, a so called transformation needsto be done. This sounds fairly mathemati-cal, but in practise it means the following.
The GPS and GLONASS satellites run inorbits around the earth, defined in a coordi-nate system called WGS 84, which is dif-ferent from the ones we use in land basedapplications. To make sure we can work inthe same coordinate system as our controlpoints are defined, a measurement of atleast 3 known points needs to be made.
By just taking GPS+ readings on theseknown points, the software is able to cal-culate a transformation. And we are done.
Such transformation can be done with thesystem mounted on the machine, or with aseparate survey rover set, using Pocket 3D.
TOPCONâs Pocket 3D is the ideal tool fordata preparation, checking and surveyingpurposes on a jobsite. Designed to workwith basically any Pocket PC, itâs an easyto use tool to quickly and easily check sur-faces, points and models. Pocket 3D usesthe same models and datastructure as thedesignfiles in the machine.
â Data Model preparation
For digital jobdesign preparation, a widevariety of commercial software standardscan be used. TOPCONâs 3D Office softwareruns on a Windows PC and is able toaccept standard digital terrain models, crossand long section and other data files in.DWG, DXF, LandXML, REB, ASCII etc, ascreated in the survey design software.
Office 3D lets you easily check before start-ing to work, and transfer this data to themachine and pocket 3D. It is also possibleto have Office 3D calculate a DTM basedon supplied point and lineinfo.
â Principle of accurate GPS
positioning
Satellites are travelling around the earth atdistances between 20.000 and 22.000 km.The signals they are sending out are travel-ling a very long way and encounter manyfactors and influences that disturb the sig-nal. In order to quantify, to eliminate thesedisturbances, one GPS receiver is placedover a point with known coordinates (basestation). By comparing the GPS calculatedposition to fixed coordinates, we can nowdetermine the âGPS-errorâ.
For a moving GPS receiver (âroverâ) work-ing in roughly a 15 km range of the basestation, we can assume that the same er-
rors apply. This correction is transmitted viaradio (or GSM) from the base station to therover so that the rover can now calculateitâs position with highest possible accuracy.
The principle of making high accurate GPSmeasurements like this is also called âRealTime Kinematicâ (RTK).

â TOPCON Millimeter GPS⢠â
How does it work?!
For using the system within a high accu-racy RTK GPS+ solution, a GPS+ base sta-tion is set up over a known point, transmit-ting correction data to the moving GPS+âroverâ unit via radio or GSM. A regular GPSbase and rover set up.
â Set up of the PZL-1 LazerZoneâ˘
Transmitter
The LazerZone⢠transmitter is placed at anypoint. You have basically complete freedomof set up. When placed over an unknownpoint, two separate measurements need tobe done using the rover GPS unit to calcu-

late the position of the transmitter. Thetransmitter needs to be placed within a 300m working distance (600 m diameter) to theGPS+ rover unit.
â LazerZone⢠receiver at Rover or
machine antenna mast
An additional sensor at the GPS+ Roverpole (PZS-1) or machine antenna mast(PZS-MC) is now able to pick up the signalfrom the transmitter, and immediatelycalculate the height difference with aresolution of 1"! An unlimited number of sur-vey RTK or machine receivers can workwithin the range of 1 transmitter simulta-neously!
â Multiple transmitter for over
2 km coverage
Any LazerZone⢠PZS-1 and PZS-MC re-ceiver can distinguish the signals of 4 dif-ferent transmitters, enabling to cover aworking area of close to 2.4 km! The RTKrover or machine can smoothly move fromwithin the working range of one transmit-ter to the other, without any adaptions bythe user!
â LazerZone⢠â Not a normal plane
laser!
The LazerZone⢠transmitter is not a regu-lar horizontal or graded plane laser thatsends out a narrow beam in a horizonatl ortilted plane. The transmitter sends out alaser signal with a width of 10 meter (!) at adistance of 150 m. This means that all re-ceivers being used within this 10 metervertical range, immediately recognize theirheight-difference compared to the trans-mitter!
â Ease of use
To use the system is easy; just place thetransmitter anywhere, set its point in thecontroller software and off you go! All thebenefits of using GPS+, now withmillimeter Z accuracy! Only from TOPCON!
Itâs been over 30 years since the rotatinglaser revolutionized the modern construc-
tion site. Technology innovations over theyears made lasers easier to use, morerobust, and expanded features such asgreater distance and slope capability. But the rotating laser can only transmit aflat plane (horizontal or sloped) signal. Eventhe advancements in slope lasers still lim-ited the operation to within the specifiedrotating plane of the laser beam.
TOPCON led the survey and constructionindustry with advancements like the firstintegrated survey total station and recentlythe GRT-2000 robotic total station, usingunique laser technology for 3D control ofconstruction machines.
The GRT-2000 provides ultra high precisionbut cannot be used with multiple machinessimultaneously.
With the arrival of advanced GPS systemsand its integration with digital job site data, positioning and grading applications wereperformed with greater flexibility and pro-ductivity then ever before.
Not being tied to line-of-sight requirementsbetween transmitter and machine, a GPSmachine control system covers a wideworking area, and one base station unit canserve a multitude of machines and opera-tors at once.
GPS machine control technology is themost rapidly growing method for the ma-jority of grading applications, but when tightvertical tolerances are required, such as inmany finish grade applications, GPS alonecannot provide the elevation accuracy asneeded.
With the invention of the LazerZoneâ˘,TOPCON is redefining precision job sitecontrol. When combining the LazerZoneâ˘
with TOPCONâs industry leading GPS+technology, you have all the benefits
of GPS and Glonass satellite systems, and the added precision from the PZL-1LazerZone⢠System!
With Millimeter GPS, you will be able toreach such accuracies, that there is no moreneed for robotic total stations to control con-struction machines.
Welcome to the world of âMillimeter GPSâ!

Instead of such mono solution only,we offer a âmultipleâ solution. The more satellites the better. ItâsTOPCONâs philosophy to use allavailable signals as long as they pro-vide a benefit to the user.
Today, the additional use ofGLONASS satellites offers around50% more satellites, increasing thenumber of areas and applications towork in dramatically! In addition, itincreases accuracy and reliability ofthe calculated position.
At this moment, GLONASS is beingbuilt further to a full constellation andis planned to be finalized by the Rus-sian government. In addition, also GPS modernisation(L2C, L5 code) and Galileo areplanned in successive years uptoaround 2011. This will all add to im-proved solutions for the user.
â GPS + GLONASS â More is better!
More is better. The additional use ofGLONASS satellites offers approx. 50%more satellites to work with. To work in ar-eas where GPS alone wonât work. To workmore accurate, to get more done!
More satellites to work with can offer con-tinuous production even in difficult areaswith many obstructions blocking the sky. Italso means quicker start up times, gener-ally up to 3 times faster then GPS alone.
With the patent pending Co-Op track-ing principle, TOPCON has developeda way of highly eliminating most ofthese disturbances.
The principle is that by using all satel-lite signals (even the weak ones), thedynamics of receiver and clock areseparately determined.
Once these are known, the carrier-waves of each satellite can be deter-mined separately and used accordingto their quality.
The quality of a GPS receiver is deter-mined by its ability to track all possiblesignals, even under the toughest con-ditions. The long travel through atmos-phere, ionospheric influences andthings like everyday increasing radiocommunications, GSM traffic and otherinterference sources deteriorate theGPS signals.
To get good accurate positions is de-termined by the ability of a receiverto take into account allthese disturbances.
â OAF Upgrade system
When purchasing a TOPCON GPS L1 re-ceiver, its possible to upgrade at any timeto GPS L1+L2 or even GPS+GLONASSL1+L2, add functionality or for instance in-crease RTK update rate.
This is done fast and efficient via TOPCONâsunique OAF upgrade system where via aneasily loadable software code, the receivercan be upgraded. No need to return the unitto the supplier. Fast and easy.
