Dear Parish Family, It’s with excitement but also sad-ness that I share with you that I’ll be concluding my position here at Ss. Peter & Paul and will begin a new job next week at St. John the Evangelist Parish in St. John, In-diana. As of December 10, I will be serving St. John the Evange-list as Director of Service and Outreach. I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with our Parish and School Staff in service to our Faith For-mation and Communication ef-forts, but the Holy Spirit has paved a new path for me that I’m excited to pursue. I will certainly miss being with you and sharing life faith, but I’m ex-cited to see some new ways that the Holy Spirit is working in the Church. Know that Ss. Peter & Paul will always remain in my heart as my home parish. With a truly grateful heart,

Mark Vojas

From the Desk Of Fr. John Immaculate Conception usually celebrated on Dec. 8 has been transferred to Monday, Dec. 9 because this Sunday is the Second Sunday of Advent…which holds a higher rank as far as the Feast Day is concerned. This is the Feast Day of our Nation…dedicated to Mary…the Immaculate Conception…as well as the Feast of our Diocese and our Cathedral. We will celebrate Mass on Monday, Dec. 9 at 8:15 am and again on Monday evening Dec. 9 at 6:30 pm. At the beginning of a new year…there are usually many reflections that take us back over the 12 months that have come and gone. There are thoughts of…and interpreta-tions of…the events and persons who have made some impact on those days and months. The focus seems to be…what will the future bring…different than what we have already seen. The questions that are raised ask about whether the past will inspire and refocus the fu-ture...in a positive or negative way. The bottom line is that we all expect the future to continue…possibly indefinitely. So how are we to act…if things will just remain the same and not much change happen? Will we just go on our merry way…and do nothing? Will we decide that the status quo is not good enough and then choose to do something to change things? As we begin the new Liturgical Year, we are faced with the challenge of Jesus…that we are not to just take things for granted. We are shar-ing with Him a mission that is to call and trans-form the world…into the kingdom of God. The idea that we can have no impact on the pre-sent or the future is really not a very good option. Jesus is teaching us…that we are to be vigi-lant…watchful…engaged in the present, which is affecting the future. The conclusion of St. Mark’s Gospel gives us the final words of Jesus to His disciples… ‘Go into

the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature’ (Mark 16: 15). That does not sound like…don’t do anything…or just let it happen! Je-sus has come on a mission…and He calls us to share in that mission until the end of time. Advent is a time of preparing for the great celebration of Christmas…when Christ first came and inaugurated His mission of announc-ing the Good News of Salvation. But Jesus has promised that He will come again…when the full-ness of the Kingdom is revealed. This is now our time to live and spread the good news of the kingdom to all the world. As we enter more deeply into the Advent Sea-son…we find ourselves listening to a famous preacher. We have heard him many times…but each time his message calls us to a new level of insight and awareness. The preacher…the prophet…is John the Baptist. When we listen to the Gospel account…we hear that John is preaching. It is not in the temple or a synagogue…it is in the desert! That should give us a hint that this is something special…and challenging. John has been given a message from the Lord. John is not beginning his mission on his own. John is the mouth-piece of God call-ing out to all of mankind. We might ask ourselves if we would be among the crowd that went out to the desert to listen to John. There were those who did go…Pharisees and Sadducees were among them…and John called them out. They were not coming out of genuine desire or belief that God was acting in a special and unique way through the preaching of John. They came only to criticize and condemn. But John called them to a true spirit of change and repentance. We are called to the same change of heart and mind by the preaching of John…prepare the way of the Lord.

This weekend you have the opportunity to sup-port the Annual Catholic Services Ap-peal, if you haven’t already, as we par-ticipate in the in-pew phase of the ap-peal. We have pledges of about $27,000 toward our goal of $80,980. Remember that your generosity helps many people in our parishes through-out the diocese, including Ss. Peter and Paul. We have been communicating about all the sup-port ministries and services that our ACSA giv-ing provides, reaching across parish bounda-ries. This produces a wise use of resources by eliminating needless duplication. The appeal supports Education Services, For-

mation and Renewal, Justice/Outreach, Family and Youth, Seminary and Clergy, Fi-nance Services and other areas for par-ishes and the diocese. Some very important services are be-yond the resources of most parishes, in-cluding Ss. Peter and Paul. Our parish is involved with many of the offices, minis-tries and services, coordinated through

the Catholic Pastoral Center. For example, we use these services to support our RCIA program and other faith formation activities. The diocese provided direction and loan service for our build-ing project. Other services assist our school and youth groups. Your gift to the Annual Cath-olic Services Appeal helps make these minis-tries and services possible.

Gathering Space on

December 14-15 Drop off before Mass—pick

up after Mass!

It’s that time of year again. Please select your tag from the Giving Tree and make someone’s Christmas morning special! The tags have items listed from each indi-vidual’s wish list. These lists are sug-gestions. You may purchase something from this list or some-thing of your own choice. Each person in each family has 3 tags on the tree to represent the 3 gifts from the Magi to the Christ Child. Please do not feel like you have to buy everything on the list. When you select a tag from the tree, please fill in the requested information on the Tag Regis-tration Sheet. This is im-portant! Should you misplace

your tag, there is a record of which one you selected. If you take a tag and then feel you cannot provide a gift, please return the tag to the tree and

call Debbie so she can remove your name from the registration sheet. Please return your wrapped gift to the Baptismal area by Sunday, Decem-ber 15. The RCIA will then delivery these gifts to each family.

The best gift you can give this person is your prayers. Please include them in your daily pray-ers so that he/she may know the love of Christ through the generosity of our parish family. If you have any questions or problems, please feel to con-tact Debbie Sanders at 345-7939 or 444-9247.
