Vandalia Branch Library Project Details for Artists
A Dayton Metro Library RFP for Artwork Open To: Regional Artists (250 mile radius of Dayton, OH)
Commission Amount: $40,000 is budgeted for all artworks at this Branch
Entry Open Date: Friday, April 10, 2015
Entry Deadline: Friday, May 22, 2015
Commissions Announced: By June 30, 2015
Project Completion: October/November 2016
Project Summary: The Dayton Metro Library (DML) and The Dayton Art Institute (DAI) seek to commission site-specific pieces of artwork for two or more spaces in the Vandalia Branch Library with a targeted opening in November 2016. Artists are invited to propose newly created artworks conceived in response to one of the two artworks below, held in the DAI permanent collection. The inspiration pieces were selected from the results of voting by community members, and particularly patrons of the Vandalia Branch Library, on their two favorites of five DAI artworks. Artists may develop a response to one or both artworks. Any aspect can be utilized as source material for the submission (color, material, style, content, composition, etc.). From the submissions, the DML ReImagining Works Committee will select the winning artists, who will meet with DML and DAI staff, architects, and construction representatives to confirm plans for the commission. The artists will be required to sign a Letter of Agreement by July 31, 2015 and complete the work by October/November 2016, as determined by the final construction timetable.
Aurora Red Ikebana with Bright Yellow Stems, Dale Chihuly (b. 1941), American, 2001, Blown glass. Artist Dale Chihuly was one of the original members of the Studio Glass Movement that moved glass-making from the factory setting to the studio. Ikebana is the traditional Japanese art form of flower arrangement. This piece is made from three separate pieces: one vase and two flowers.
Rationale for inclusion: Like the new library, this piece combines traditional
usage and forms with new and exciting ideas, colors and outcomes. For more information: http://www.daytonartinstitute.org/200187#overview
Study of Heads of an Old Man, Sir Peter Paul Rubens (1577 - 1641), Flemish, c. 1612, Oil on oak panel. Peter Paul Rubens’ use of sensuous color and bold movement have made him one of the most definitive artists of the Baroque era. Study Heads of an Old Man was probably created in anticipation of a larger work, Christ and the Adulterous Woman, but when the museum received the painting it showed only one face. A dealer had probably painted out the second face some time ago in order to sell the work as a portrait, rather than a study.
Rationale for inclusion: The fascinating story of this painting’s surprise second face would make a great novel!

Artistic Goals of the Project: The Vandalia Branch Library is known for its avid readers...it has the highest circulation statistics in the Dayton Metro Library system. The current facility is so cramped that the meeting room houses the teen space and periodical collection. A new larger Library will remain on the Vandalia-Butler Schools campus and be built just north of the current Branch on South Dixie Drive. A light-filled and spacious marketplace with a high ceiling will span the length of the building to create an open and welcoming space with long sight lines.
Proposed artworks should reflect the distinctive personality of this location; resonate with people of all ages and backgrounds; inspire collaboration, learning and creativity; and contribute to an inviting, engaging, and stimulating environment. The committee welcomes, but in no way requires, submissions that relate to the mission of Dayton Metro Library or that may provide a springboard for educational programming and/or current or future collaborative learning opportunities. Practical Considerations: The artwork must be durable and easily maintained. Some potential locations for artwork will be accessible to Library patrons. Art opportunities at the Vandalia Branch include the large atrium area over the Marketplace and several large interior walls. The attached renderings illustrate these potential locations for artwork along with their current dimensions. Architectural plans are still subject to revision. Submissions: Proposals will only be accepted electronically, in the form of a single pdf of no more than 10 pages and no more than 10 MB. Proposals must include the following and be organized in the order below:
1. A sketch and narrative explanation of the proposed artwork
2. Explanation of relationship between source material and proposed artwork
3. Size range for suggested location with maximum budget
4. Four to six images of completed artwork, preferably of similar scale and material
5. Brief artist’s CV or biography ( 2 pages maximum)
Send completed proposals to Susan Anable, Reimagining Works Project Manager for The Dayton Art Institute, at [email protected] by Friday, May 22, 2015. Additional Information: Ms. Anable will hold an informational meeting for artists on Saturday, April 18, from 10:00 a.m. to noon at DAI. Danette Windle of Ruetschle Architecture will also be there to answer questions. Please enter through the Rike (business) entrance of the museum. Additionally, Ms. Anable will schedule individual, 15-minute phone calls with artists on Monday, April 20 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. R.S.V.P. for the meeting and/or schedule a time to discuss your proposal or ask questions by emailing [email protected].
