From the Desk Of Fr. John Pentecost…the culmination of the Easter cel-ebration of Christ…Risen…Ascended…and the sending of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost is the celebration of the birthday of the Church and of the community that gives us life in Christ…through His Holy Word…the Sacrament of Bap-tism…sealing us with the Gift of the Holy Spirit…and nurturing us with the Most Holy Eucharist. This mystery is all one…as we say at the very introduction of the Mass… ‘Let us prepare our-selves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.’ We again express our faith in the marvel of what God has done in Christ Jesus immediately after the words of institution… ‘The Mystery of Faith!’ The Third Eucharistic Prayer of the Mass also re-minds us… ‘Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the saving Passion of Your Son, His wondrous Resurrection, and Ascension into heaven, and as we look forward to His second coming…’ Every time we celebrate the Holy Lit-urgy…we celebrate the great mystery of our re-demption in Christ Jesus. Our Catholic Liturgy helps us all grasp this mys-tery better…by spreading out over these fifty (50) days all that has been given to us in the life, death, resurrection, ascension…and the outpour-ing of the Holy Spirit. We have learned…hopefully…through the rigors that the Pandemic has caused us to implement…the importance of our faith community…of faith…of prayer…of study…of the sacraments themselves. Last Sunday we celebrated the great Feast of the Ascension of the Lord. It is not to be iso-lated…as a special historical feast…but di-rectly connected to the whole Easter Mystery. Sometimes we want to get all the details of an event…like what they do with ‘body cams’ at a crime scene. But that is not what the Feast is about. As we read the Gospels we find that the Ascension happened the very first day or possi-ble the day after the Resurrection. Jesus is with the Father…and yet He comes in glory and ap-pears to His disciples to help and strengthen them…and interpret the meaning of His death and the implications of His resurrection…

preparing them for the ‘Promise of the Father’…the gift of the Holy Spirit. St. Luke helps us all…by recounting an extended time of the appearances of the Risen Lord over a period of time…symbolically 40 days. Then the Lord in His ‘final’ appearance commissions them to fulfill the mission of proclaiming the Good News to all creation. The gift of the Messiah was not exclusively for the people of Israel…God is bigger than that! He sent His Son for all of the human family…and more. In his second volume…The Acts of the Apos-tles…St. Luke gives us a quick refresher of the life and ministry of Jesus…and moves directly into Jesus’ Ascension. The scene of the disciples standing there…and looking up into the heav-ens…ends with two messengers (Angels) chal-lenging them about why they are just standing there looking up. Of course, they are being di-rected…like all of us…to get busy with the mis-sion Jesus has given us…missionaries and wit-nesses. This is the introduction to the whole work of Jesus present in the Church through the pow-er of the Holy Spirit and the great mission to all of the human family! Pentecost (the word means 50) was in the He-brew religious calendar 50 days after Passover. The Jewish people had celebrated Passover…and were lead through the desert to Mount Sinai. On that mountain Moses encountered God in sights, sounds and earthquakes, most especially in the gift of the Torah…the Law and covenant. We may hear some echoes of those events in St. Luke’s recounting of that first Pentecost when the Spirit of the Lord came upon the disciples…filling them with His gifts and empowering them for the mission to proclaim the Gospel to all na-tions. John’s Gospel gives us a simpler and yet powerful expression of the gift of the Spirit… ‘Jesus breathed on them and said…receive the Holy Spirit.’ Now we go forth to continue our mis-sion…the mission of the Risen and Ascended Lord.

Staying in Community

We live in a culture that produces hopelessness with astounding con-sistency. When everything seems chaotic and we are faced with a multitude of negative realities, we might be tempted to say that noth-ing makes sense anymore. But we are not alone—God walks with us and His presence fills us with hope. Because of this we are able to smile in the midst of our difficulties. Despair is defeated because God is with us. Hope does not disap-point! What gives you hope? What are your hopes and dreams—for yourself, your children, your church, your community, your nation? What sus-tains that hope and turns those dreams into real-ity? What are some of the unique ways you bring hope to people in your life? The contribu-tors featured in Beautiful Hope offer intensely

personal answers to these questions. Some of them are well-known au-thors and speakers, but many are ordinary Catholics dealing with every-day life with all its challenges and problems, just like you. Their stories are meant to spark your own explora-tion of hope and increase its abun-dance in your life. Today many are worried about the future and what it holds. Many are concerned about the future of our Church. If we are to become people who can shine the light of faith into

the darkness of our world, things must change. We need an infusion of hope so we can see more clearly and live boldly as children of God. Pick up your copy in the Parish Office on Thursdays from 11 am-2 pm, while supplies last.

Limited Distribution of Holy Communion

Distribution of Holy Communion:

Saturday at 5 pm – 5:30 pm

Sunday at 10 am – 10:30 am

Holy Communion will be offered outside of the Church at the following stations: Main Gathering Space door and west Johnson Street door. Please Follow These Guidelines 1. In order to receive Holy Communion, you must watch a live streamed Mass and prepare yourself spiritually to receive the Blessed Sacrament, heading to church after the completion of the Mass. One car per family and just immediate family members. Live streamed Mass is on our Facebook site at 4 pm Saturday and on many social media and internet sites on Sunday morning. 2. In order to assure a safe process, children who have not yet received their First Communion are to stay home or remain in the vehicle accompanied by a responsible individual. 3. Those who are vulnerable and at high risk are strongly encouraged to stay home and continue to receive Spiritual Communion, especially if you have difficulty getting out of the car. 4. Bishop Paprocki’s dispensation from the obligation to attend Holy Mass on Sun-days and Holy Days remains in effect. 5. No one is permitted to take Holy Communion to family members or friends who are not physically present at the distribution of Holy Communion. 6. Enter either the main parking lot or Johnson Street from Morrison and form a line in your car at the door. Your whole family should exit when it’s your turn and form a line at the table. 7. When approaching the Holy Communion station, you must wear a mask. If you are not wearing a mask, you will be asked to leave the station. 8. Currently, we ask you not to receive Holy Communion on the tongue. 9. After the Priest or Deacon places the Host in your hand, you should step aside, temporarily remove your mask and consume the Host. 10. You are to return to your vehicle, pull up a few spaces, and offer a Prayer of Thanksgiving, which you can pick up on the table. 11. No one is permitted to leave the parish campus without properly and reverently consuming the Host. 12. You are then to leave the parking lot, exiting on Vandalia. You are not to congre-gate with others. In addition to our Facebook page and website, masses are available on dio.org,

wordonfire.org and many other places on the Internet.
