ZIGGY’S “WONDER”: What does God expect of me? *Part 1: This may be only under-stood during “quiet time.” Please read on… ZIGGY’S INSIGHT: Fore-most, God expects me to “pay attention” to His Divine Son, JESUS! This must be on a daily basis (prayer) and with the understanding that no one is “perfect,” yet I must always be “striving” to do better. More next week!

From the Desk Of Fr. John Thank you everyone. The celebration of the Feast of Ss. Peter & Paul was great. Thank you also for the support and encouragement you have given me over these 20 years serving as your pastor. It is such a humbling experience to be called to serve…remember the Lord who told His disciples… ‘You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you.’ We might all think of our patron saints…Peter & Paul. Each of them had unique gifts and the Lord used each of them to spread the Gospel and build up the Church. They were instruments in God’s hands for the good of the people. I am sure they admitted many times that they were His servants and unworthy for the position they had been called to fill. But they responded in obedience and humility…and I join them in that response. However, we are all called into the Lord’s ser-vice with our many gifts and talents. We to-gether make up the community and we are all necessary and vital for the good of all. Thank all of you who have responded with such faith and sincerity to the Lord’s call and who have given so much of yourselves in loving service! Our two patron saints really stand out in the mis-sion of the Church…from its very beginning. Pe-ter is prominent in the Gospels…since he shared time with the Lord during His public ministry…and beyond. Paul on the other hand was set against the Lord and the movement that claimed Him as Son of God and Messiah. The Risen Lord Jesus appeared to Paul…unexpectedly…and changed his heart and his life forever. The Acts of the Apostles gives us many de-tails of both Peter and Paul…their work and preaching in the Church and beyond. The move-ment of the Holy Spirit demonstrates how both of these disciples carry out the missionary aspect of Christ’s commission. They both witness boldly and courageously to Jews…and when reject-ed…they begin their work among the Gentiles. They have to face the challenge of welcoming all into the household of God…just as Jesus had commanded. We must also see new ways of wit-nessing and sharing our faith with others. We all

need to listen attentively to the Holy Spirit to guide and inspire us to carry out the mission giv-en us by the Lord. This Sunday we move back into the Ordered Sundays of the Year…which we call Ordinary Time. It fits very well into the themes we have celebrated at Corpus Christi and the Feast of Ss. Peter & Paul…missionary. Jesus appoints and sends out 72 disciples. The Gospel tells us that Jesus sends them to every town and village that He intends to visit. We may ask what Jesus hoped would happen by sending these men into this unchartered territory. We might think of salespersons making what they call ‘cold’ calls…calls to those not expecting a call. The disciples were probably filled with a little anxiety…and yet they followed the Lord’s command and directive. We may feel a little uncomfortable in different settings to share faith or prayer with a stranger…even at times uncomfortable with those we know. But the Lord has a plan to use us as His messengers…to prepare the way for the Good News of salvation. We can be the instruments that the Holy Spirit uses to help people on their journey…whether introducing them to Christ…or deepening that relationship. HVAC…some have noticed that it was cold in church…how different from the complaints about how, not that long ago, it was very hot. Our offices were very cold as well…down into the mid-fifties! Some used space heaters…then the breakers would break and computers would go down. But…help is on the way. All the wiring had to be pulled before the electronics of the controls could be activated…then there will be the balancing and other adjustments. (p.s. – just in case, you might bring a sweater.) Thanks!

As Jesus said about some evil spirits: “This kind cannot come out except by prayer and fasting.” Mark 9:29 We will continue our prayers for our Church, Diocese and Parish, especially for the clergy and the victims of any type of abuse. We pray that the issues in the church may be addressed and that we have a spirit of repentance, healing and renew-al. The type of issues we are dealing with needs lots of prayers and fasting. This coming week we will have two hours of prayer in the Church: Monday from 2-3 pm and Tuesday from 6-7 pm.

Open Position: School Administrative Assistant

Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic School has an opening for a full-time administrative assistant. The ideal candidate should have proven administrative work experience and familiarity with of-fice organization. Position requires a high degree of multi-tasking and time management, excellent written and verbal communication skills, integrity and professionalism, and profi-ciency in MS Office a must. Qualified candidates should con-tact Patricia Kirk at 618-344-5450 or send resume and three references to [email protected].

A new statue was recently set up in the school. St. Angela Merici was an Italian religious educator and founder of the Ursulines whose deep prayer life and relationship with the Lord bore the fruit of mystical encounters with God. We received the statue from St. Peter and Paul School in Alton, which has closed.

To be clear, we use the word “evolving” to indicate the way in which creation is an ever-unfolding reality that is part of God’s loving plan of hope and salvation. Dominican scholar and retreat leader Sara Fairbanks, OP will consider this amazing universe story in light of biblical understanding and Christian tradition. Mass on the World: A Multimedia Experience, Saturday, Ju-ly 13 at 7 pm at Chiara Center. Through the use of visual image-ry, music and other sensory surprises, two local dramatists will read excerpts from Pierre Teilhard de Chardin’s mystical text, Mass on the World. Published six years after his death, this first chapter taken from his 1961 book, Hymn of the Universe reveals how Teilhard, “…used the Roman Catholic Mass as a metaphor for his philosophical understanding of man in relation to the uni-verse. $10 and RSVPs appreciated. Help Foster Our Sister Parish Program with Holy Cross

Anyone interested in fostering our parish relation-ship with our sister parish, Santa Cruz (Holy Cross), in Guatemala? Or visiting there in 2020? Join us on Tuesday, July 16, from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm at the Knights of Columbus in Highland. Contact Rich and Judi Schutzenhofer at 618-593-3622 for more information. The Sister Parish Program is facilitated by Mis-sions International which helps establish and maintain sister parish relationships by matching churches or individuals in the U.S. with sister parishes in developing countries. The goal of this program is to foster a close relationship built

on sharing spiritual and financial support that ulti-mately transform the lives of all involved. We have focused on the financial side, collecting donations monthly for Holy Cross. But we would like to focus more on the spiritual and relation-ship aspects. Doing this can have a great impact on us. When we enter into relationship with peo-ple who suffer beyond what we can imagine, our hearts open. The divide between Lazarus and rich man begins to close. We can no longer turn away when we hear about something that seems removed from our lives, because we realize that our own woundedness and healing are bound up with the woundedness and healing of all mem-bers of the Body of Christ.

Knights of Columbus To my dear friends, Father John and the Parishioners of Ss. Peter & Paul Parish, I want to thank each one of you for giving me a warm welcome as I served in your parish the past year. It was one of the best experi-ences I have had as a transitional deacon. You have helped me to become a better person and have taught me many valuable lessons

about serving. Your friendship and support meant a great deal to me, and I am grateful to God for the opportunity to spend this year in your parish. I will leave Ss. Peter and Paul church with a heavy heart, and I will offer my prayers and gratitude to God for this wonderful op-portunity to serve you as your deacon. I ask for your prayers as I continue to serve God as a deacon in a new Diocese and hopefully, God willing, I will come back to vis-it you as an ordained priest. Thank you again for what you have done for me. May God bless each one of you. Deacon Fernando V. Solomon, Jr.

Father Augustine Tolton of Quincy, the nation’s first black priest and once a slave, was proclaimed “Venerable” June 12 by Pope Francis, making Father Tolton one step closer to being declared a saint by the Catholic Church. The “Venerable” designation means he is officially recognized as living a life of heroic virtue by the Catholic Church. “Today’s news is not only exciting for Catholics across the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois, but also for the entire Christian world,” Bishop Thomas John Paprocki said. “Father Tolton’s story, from slave to priest, is an incredible journey that shows how God has a plan for all of us. Father Tolton overcame the odds of slavery, prejudice, and racism, to become a humble priest and someone we should model our lives after.” Now that Father Tolton has been declared Venerable, the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois is exploring having a shrine to honor Venerable Father Tolton. One possible loca-tion could be the now closed St. Boniface Church in Quincy. An an-nouncement on that could come later this year. In the meantime, the cause for the beatification and canonization of sainthood continues, something the Diocese of Springfield and Archdiocese of Chicago have been working on together since 2003. Father Tolton is a model for priests and laity who live and work in these situations while they strive to work for harmony and peace among all regardless their color, their origin, their language.” If a miracle can be attributed to Fa-ther Tolton’s prayerful intercession, he would then be declared Blessed by the Pope. Another miracle

would lead him to sainthood. Offi-cials in Rome are currently review-ing at least one potential miracle. “By naming Father Tolton ‘Venerable,’ the Catholic Church holds him up as an example wor-thy of our imitation,” said Father Daren Zehnle, a Quincy native and pastor at St. Augustine Church in Ashland. “I’ve always been struck by the example of Father Gus’ pa-tience and long-suffering, of the way he joyfully united his suffering with the Cross of Christ. That, I think is an example we very much need today.” Father Tolton was born into slavery in Missouri April 1, 1854. His moth-er, through her courage and the help of some Union soldiers in Mis-souri, made a daring escape across the Mississippi River with Augustine and his two siblings in 1862 in the dead of night, with Confederate soldiers shooting at them. After landing in Illinois, the family located to Quincy where Augustine attended St. Peter’s Catholic School, an all-white parish school in Quincy, led by Father Peter McGirr. Young Tolton, already

Catholic, was later asked that he should think about becoming a priest. Little did he know at the time that God was working through him to that vocation. Because no American seminary would accept a black man, Tolton began his priestly studies in Rome, thinking he would minister in Africa, but once he was or-dained at the age of 31, he was sent back to Quincy, arriving to the joy of thousands of well-wishers. Father Zehnle recounted an im-portant moment in Father Tolton’s life toward the end of his time in Rome. “One of Father Tolton’s

biographers recounts a conversa-tion Father Tolton had with Cardi-nal Simeoni just before he was sent back to Quincy as a priest. The cardinal remarked that Ameri-ca had been called the most en-lightened nation on earth, and he would see if it deserved that honor. He said, ‘If America has not yet seen a black priest, it must see one now.’” Father Tolton ministered in Quincy for a little more than three years, with his first assignment at St. Jo-seph’s Church. After years of en-during racism from some members of the community, including a priest, he later accepted an assign-ment in Chicago, continuing his service to the poor and marginal-ized. Father Tolton died in 1897 at the age of 43 from heat stroke. Known as “Good Father Gus,” Fa-ther Tolton is buried in Quincy at St. Peter’s Cemetery. Prior to the announcement by Pope Francis, Father Tolton was given the title “Servant of God” by the Holy See in 2011.
